NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT - When I typically think about pizza in America, I immediately think about New York pizza and Chicago pizza… but one of the lesser known heroes of pizza in America is New Haven, Connecticut, and some of the true pizza connoisseurs say it’s the best pizza in America! Today we’re going on a New Haven pizza (or apizza as its known) in New Haven. #pizza #NewHaven

Pizza (apizza) in New Haven has a very unique style and distinct taste - it’s known for being quite a thin crust, that’s chewy and charred to crispness. Along with the crust, New Haven is known for its white clam pie, a pizza that was invented at Frank Pepe, but you’ll now find at pizzerias throughout New Haven. I can safely say that New Haven pizza is the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life. I love that intense heat that creates the char, and the layers of flavor that come as a result.
Here are the pizza places we ate at in this tour:
Zuppardi's Apizza (goo.gl/maps/9wLxwEkmAYtGyxdD6) - We started at Zuppardi's Apizza, actually located in West Haven. This family run pizzeria serves some of the best in New Haven. Their crust is incredible, and theirs is a little less thin and not quite as charred as some of the other pizzas of New Haven. We all agreed their white clam pie is the best in New Haven.
Price - About $17 per medium pizza
Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana (g.page/FrankPepesNewHaven?share) - Frank Pepe is the ultimate legend of New Haven pizza, the epicenter, and where it all began in 1925. They invented the white clam pie, and their pizzas are very thin and very crispy. The char, their massive 14 foot coal burning overs, and the caramelised toppings, are truly remarkable. A life changing pizza experience with so much history.
Price - About $25 per medium pizza
Modern Apizza (goo.gl/maps/CRFkvXdzA9ZmQmta8) - Lastly, I had a chance to try Modern Apizza, another local favorite New Haven pizzeria. Again, they have a very thin crust and a distinct char. Their white clam pie was heavier on the mozzarella cheese than the others, but delicious. However, I preferred their sausage pizza which was outstanding.
Price - About $18 per medium pizza
All three pizza places were fantastic and you should try all of them on your pizza tour of New Haven, Connecticut. I can tell you without a doubt, I’m a fan of New Haven Apizza for life!! Best pizza in America? I’m not sure, but for sure I have a new standard of delicious pizza.

I was born and raised in New Haven Ct. For 35 yrs Lived in West Haven for 15 years. Zuppardis is legendary I miss it soooo much. The clam is my favorite but you really can not go wrong with anything from there. I moved to Lubbock Tx two years ago I miss CT a lot. Also Sallys,Pepe,Modern pizzas are amazing. This episode made me so happy and home sick at the same time. Thanks Marc for giving joy to my day.❤
Why are pizzas burnt, like coal?
@@ZurriyetBlogs not burned. Chared on the bottom. With taste of.the dough it pairs perfectly
@@chriswheeler7112 The coal is the difference...a little char is good! Very few pizza joints use coal. I met one of the Sally's kids fly fishing up in Quebec....that's my favorite when I go back to CT.
hey if you are in Texas you gotta have great bbq and Mexican food...I make my own pizza here in Florida, no one here can make it worth a damn
Ernie's Pizzeria is pretty popular here in New Haven as well. Very high reviews, and lots of regular visitors.
Anthony is excellent for this video. Other times cooks/tradesmen being filmed while doing their daily duty, seem very out of their element. Not talking too much, and a little awkward. But Anthony is still doing a lot of work, and seems happy to explain things and explain things well. Good find with him!
You're right about that, Anthony and everyone at Zuppardi's was amazing!
They're used to it.
Various influencers, vloggers and even news outlets have been filming in new haven for years

The most underrated pizza in the whole country. Grateful to be born & raised in new haven JUST bc of the pizza!
I just like the suave & effortless smooth simplicity & naturality of how Mark (et al.) performs and articulate each of his food video presentations, and it's actually not just about the foods that captivates the mind and appetite of viewers & fans worldwide but because, ordinary people in the background regardless of their status, beliefs & cultural background were all treated being equal, breaking all barriers of economic hierarchy & discrimination. Thank you Mark !

So glad you covered Frank Pepe's in New Haven! They're been around for over 100 yrs & there's always a line before it opens. The pizza is so good.
It looks like something we all need in our lives 🤤
It was sooo good!

Who doesn’t like Mark sharing his food adventures!
So good! Thanks!
Mark keeps it real and that is what I love about him!
PIIIIIZZZZZZZAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! That crust from Zuppardi’s when they cut into it; it sounded like a good action movie. This was a great one. Have a great day everyone.

love watching Mark ! he brings the most beautiful, nice content to his videos 😇 I love how he says hes going to sprint to the table but casually walks out ready to eat 😁! foodie legend
I was at Yale during 1981-84. Our sacred weekly forestry school ritual was to gather, socialize and drain a TGIF keg, then head over to Pepe's for their sublime white clam apizza! I am vegan now, but would gladly fall off the wagon if I were to be transported back to Pepe's!
Naples Pizza was not a bad place around Yale's campus
Jefferey is my favorite recurring character in Mark's videos. He is always totally wrecked, gorging himself with massive portions, sweating profusely and absolutely dying, LMAO.
Mark eats the same amount like Jeff. However they are not proportional.
Lmao omg I keep thinking that too but You wrote it best
Keeps that eating up and he will .
He is obese, not healthy

Yaaaaaaaay! After a hard day of work at the hospital, I get to watch Mark visit my home state and enjoy our amazing pizza! This makes me so proud! Thank you Mark!
That thin airy crackling sound when you folded it, i almost died, you almost killed me Mark, lol
Almost all my life I've thought pizza is overrated, but for a year or so i can see more and more why people find it so irresistible, and this video really showcases it as well. Got me so hungry right now at 12:50 AM.. 😫
As an italian who ofc eats a lot of pizza, I never expected to see "Scarola" (that's how we call it) on pizza outside of Naples, good job, can't wait to see Mark reaction after he gets a bite of it
Wow, cool to hear that!
Pretty common in Brazil.

Nice!!
We went to Connecticut this summer, where we had Frank Pepe's pizza for a dinner and must say, was the best pizza we ever had in the US since 2014, before that we were living in Brazil (São Paulo), where you can find the best pizzas as well!
The way Jeffrey matches his shirt to what he's eating.

We're supposed to get a Frank Pepe here in Maryland in the near future. Was supposed to open a year or so ago but of course COVID put a stop to that. Now it's back on. I hope to visit New Haven someday; my late parents lived there back in the 60s.
