I was sold on Meowscarda as soon as I heard about the inspiration My love for it skyrocketed when I saw it in a picnic sprinting around like a wild animal that learned about Naruto running It went from weed cat to cocaine cat
I actually picked Sprigatito as my starter for my first play through. I had known what the final evolution looked like already but I did not know its signature move. I love using Flower Trick in battle. Although something I noticed is that all three starters have a theme of being performers; magician, dancer, and singer.
A really cool attention to detail is Floragato using its rose as a yo-yo and said rose becomes the stem of a bouquet for Flower Trick. It’s a yo-yo trick that becomes a party trick much like how Crocalor’s fire egg becomes a fire bird for its signature move.
While it does kinda tank that it doesn't keep the Yo-yo, it makes all kinds of sense; it was never meant to be a permanent part of its kit, it was a practice tool for training its hands to be better adept at performing legerdemain in its fully evolved form.
What I love is the fact the secondary typing actually makes them stronger than their initial elemental weakness. Dark beats ghosts, ghost beats fighting, and fighting beats dark. It's the first time I felt the the starters actually balanced instead of rock paper scissors
Skeledirge has a bad matchup against both meowscarada and quaquaval assuming no one terrastalises since it has no super effective stab against quaquaval and meow is faster than it.
@@battlesheep2552 true, but ghost usually gets some form of psychic move. This one gets Zen headbutt. Give it a quick claw or if you can setup a trick room you should be fine.
My favourite is still Sprigatito, but I love it's evolutions. Because Sprigatito is so cute I was hesitant to evolve it at first, but once I evolved it I grew to love it's cute and a little shy personality.
It did it way earlier than it's firey cousin did, and I respect it for that, even if I'm not at all hung up on the issue of how many legs a Pokemon ends up on. Basically, Floragato isn't a liar like Torracat was. It's upfront with you on how its gonna end up!
meowscarada’s grown on me, but i definitely prefer floragato. just a much more conventionally appealing design with more of the face that made me love sprigatito. also she has a yoyo, i love that.
Yeah, when I first saw Floragato I thought it was a strong design and Meowscarada looks cool too, but it feels a little like it goes in a different direction that Floragato was starting 🤷♂️
I really like Meowscarada. While it isn't taking my top five, it might contend for sixth. I get why some people might feel annoyed, but who cares? It's a good design still and I didn't care in the first place if Sprigatito went bipedal.
Not to mention, it’s the only bipedal design this gen, unlike last gen which had 2 (I don’t count Grookey line cuz primate). Fuecoco actually becomes a quadruped, which we haven’t seen since Samurott 4 Gens and over a decade ago (Again- Quaxly doesn’t count because it’s a bipedal bird to start with)
One awesome little detail that I love about Meowscarada is the potential reasoning why it probably has Protean as a hidden ability. You see, Meowscarada is indeed a stage magician but it also has a bit of a Jester theme. The Jester is usually a figure that represents the Fool arcana in the 78 Tarot Card deck. "The Fool" represents "new beginnings" but is also is described as an individual who doesn't know what to expect, fairly inexperienced, having beginners luck, and has very good improvisation. Basically, Meowscarada is the Joker card of pokémon, which I find super fun and creative (most persona fans probably see the correlation). But Meowscarada may not just be the fool arcana, but "The Magician" arcana as well, seeing as it is its title. The Magician Arcana is also a Tarot card that states "The message is to tap into one's full potential rather than holding back, especially when there is a need to transform something." I feel of the 3 protean starters, Meowscarada has the most creative take to justify an ability for a starter that I've ever seen.
I like Protean, but I also like the defense against certain types that it gets thanks to Dark typing. Sure, it gets 2x Bug Damage and one more weakness, but it also gets halved damage against everything else but FOUR types AND immunity to psychic. I decided to leave its Ability as it is when I got the Ability Patch.
Floragato is literally my favorite middle evolution of any that have existed to date. Much as I love Meowscarada, I wouldn’t be mad about a Floragato-like design being the final evolutions. As it stands, my Meowscarada is a chaos demon in every sense of the word and I’d do anything for him 🥺❤️
Meowscarada has had it's reputation literally be 'Oh No! Anyways'. Once the criticism has gone and passed and actual feelings kick in, it is good to see that people are liking the design of it. I personally do like Meowscarada similarly to how I like Cinderace. I was skeptical at first for both of them, but grew to like them both respectively.
For me, Mewoscarada didn't really hit that well when I only knew its artwork, but it really grew on me in 3D, especially in combination with flower trick. I really like how its jester-like design plays perfectly into its dark typing.
I've grown to like Meowscarda over time, I named mine Masquerade and she's by far the strongest member of my team, I love battling with her, and it's a shame that people say it's 'furry bait'. Yes, it has somewhat of a body shape but it isn't even that exaggerated as some people make it out to be, unlike Lopunny.
And not to mention the fact that the gender ratio for Meowscarada is mostly male meaning it wasn’t made to be a “waifu Pokemon”. I don’t even think Pokemon has even made any Pokemon to be “waifu material”, people just sexualise them too much for some reason.
@@Kaede_matsu Yeah. The only pokemon you could say that for is lopunny, but that was made before there was much of a trend of people sexualizing pokemon. And even lopunny is pretty tame.
I'm not apart of that community, I appreciate the fact y'all enjoy this line though. It's nice. He's got an awesome personality. Nobody can hate him for that.
Hisuian Typhlosion and Meowscarada: > hated when revealed > loads of speculation about what they could look like > bipedal > actually kinda cool when not looked at from face-value > weed
Actually, both forms of Typhlosion are quadrupedal, in the sense that Pikachu is. I doubt that a significant percentage of the fanbase considers Pikachu bipedal, so why should Quilava and Typhlosion, which are also in the quadruped Pokédex shape, be treated any different?
Actually, It was mainly the vocal minority that were first to complain and complain loudly, but the masses still liked this Pokémon and their views, feelings and voices shon through as the vocal minority were drowned out. Even though they’re still not as good or as popular as Fuecoco, Crocalor and Skelidirge, Meowscarada’s evolution line is still genuinely awesome and a high favourite amongst the fan base, even if that vocal minority still refuses to believe it.
@@harry.t.radio95237 Like, the minority who know the amount of adult content about Pokémon. But like, the majority will won't know THAT much or just the like "oh it has". You need to really spend a good time in the internet for that.
@@platinumg.8614 The thing is, I never went out of my way to learn about this kind of stuff. Some idiots kept making memes and jokes about it and putting it up on platforms like UA-cam, shoving it right in our faces. So yes I’m aware of that stuff, but it’s not like I asked to learn about it.
honestly i think that the humanoids designs makes them a lot more interesting in my opinion. Meowscarada, cinderace and especially Incineroar are very expressive.which is made easier by their human-ish shape. something that other mons like venusaur, torterra, swampert have some difficulty in showing.
People whine about starters developing new motifs and not just getting bigger as they evolve, yet whenever a non-starter just gets bigger when it evolves they complain about wasted potential (number one citation: Wooloo evolving into Dubwool and not a werewolf "in sheep's clothing.")
@@kittensolder8818 yup.and..why would a sheep evolve into a wolf. i mean it's creative sure but it seems like too much of a jump. maybe the people need to calm down and play the game before judging
I think the opposite. Having an animalistic design makes a pokemon's expression way more interesting. Furthermore, a lot of modern humanoid pokemon designs just look tacky and convoluted. I love Mewtwo, Gardevoir, Blaziken,Machamp and other humanoid mons, but Mewscarada just looks awkward. Same with mons like Incineroar where the head and body don't mesh well together.
People are just disapoint because their fan ideas do not allign with the final result. As a brazilian I liked Quaquaval and according with its pokedex description, it even gives me hopes that a gen in Brazil (or south america) in the future. But Fuecoco still my pick, even if his final form ins't my fave. But I gotta say, I am liking this new trend for ghost types being exorcist-like.
@@monkey_blu poor ME. I once was trying to figure something out about Houndoom's mega so I, in my thoughtless but innocent naivety, googled "how hot is Houndoom?". Don't do that.
I am one of the guys that wanted quadrupedal sprigatito Evo, but the fact that Meowscarada has a masked magician esque theme and a purple Evo, it became my instant favorite.
I have zero problem with anthro Pokemon or anthro starters, and I love Meowscarada, but I do agree it's a bit ridiculous that Incineroar didn't stay 4 legged
It's just a bit annoying that the last final stage feline that stayed on all fours was Pyroar and that was nearly a decade ago. Meanwhile we get 3 dog families this gen and none of them are bipedal. Wouldn't be so much a complaint if Gamefreak didn't make it feel like a decade-long quadrupedal dry spell.
I've been with Pokemon and Digimon since the beginning. If people have an issue with humanoids in Pokemon, they better stay away from Digimon because there's some straight-up human creatures there lol.
I was sold on Sprigatito from the start, and initially was in the “don’t you dare stand up” camp. But I have to admit, when I saw the final evolution, being a persona 5 fan definitely solidified my choice. I have a Meowscarada named Noir, after my favourite of the phantom thieves (fav girl, Ryugi is still the best lol, but I do love them all)
I can't decide between Meowscarada and Quaquaval. I love both deigns. Meowscarada got the masquerade theme and the magic misdirection part, I love that. But Quaquaval has such a personality and flashy design plus incorporating it's dancing into it's fighting style, plus the wiki's description of it's personality is awesome. Not to mention it's run animation that reminds me of Jack Sparrow's run yet somehow even more feminine and femboy-ish, it's hilarious. Plus even the wiki describes it's anatomy as "having a defined rump". That's too hilarious to ignore.
I was fine with Meowscarada - I do like the more "beast-like" Pokémon, but Meowscarada seems to fit more the whole thing than Incineroar. I feel like that one came out of nowhere after Torracat. About what you said regarding Floragato... mine was so useless I was very close to boxing it 😅
Finally, someone said it. People keep saying Meowscarada’s bad because of it going biped and having a stupid design, but what about Incineroar? The evolution was not only more jarring, but there was absolutely no hints as to what its theme was gonna be as a Torracat.
The difference is that Meowscarada is still very animalistic and is still an anatomical cat, whereas Incineroar is more humanoid in terms of anatomy and how they sound and act.
As weird as Meowscarada was at first, I've really warmed up to it, and wouldn't have it any other way. My lil Pepper is adorable in all three forms. Now we need a bipedal water cat
Hot take... a pokemon being anthro doesn't make it immediately bad a pokemon being "waifu" or "furry bait" also doesn't mean the pokemon is inheritably bad even if a pokemon isn't intentially sexualized, the internet will find a way regardless *cough cough* vaporeon *cough cough* just appreciate the pokemon as we have over 1000 different designs on pokemon at this point and let people hate or enjoy pokemon however they like. whether that be hating on a pokemon cause they dont like it or drawing fan art of a pokemon because they enjoy it, there is not right or wrong way to love a pokemon. I picked the fire croc cause i thought it looked the coolest but i'm warming up to the other two starters as well. possibly one of my most favorite batch of starters of any gen
A Pokémon being bipedal doesn’t necessarily make it “furry-bait”. Meowscarada is still very animalistic and still acts and sounds like a cat. Compared to a Pokémon like Sneasler which is one I’ll admit Actually looks like “furry-bait”.
Skeledirge is one of the rawest designs this gen for sure. I really like the inspiration and the execution is sublime. Yeah, it’s another music based starter, but at the same time it’s really cool that you can make a team of Pokemon that’s basically a band. I chose Sprigatito as my starter and honestly i like this line. At first it felt a bit redundant having 2 bipedal cat starters, especially since I chose Litten when Moon came out. However, Meowscarada sets itself apart enough by giving such chill vibes while still being flashy. Its signature move is also my favorite out of this starter group. Honestly, looking at Quaquaval’s official artwork, the design isn’t that bad. It’s my least favorite of this trio, but it could grow on me.
You could say that Incineroar is more like direct brute force combat, while Meowscarada is closer to a thief/rogue archetype in standard RPGs. Kinda like the Ironclad and the Silent from Slay The Spire.
Meowscarada is amazing IMO. I love how it has hazy eyes like it just smoked a joint. Memes aside though I love the phantom of the opera vibes it gives off.
It hurts my head everytime I hear someone use "it doesn't even look like an animal" or "it doesn't look like it belongs in nature" as an argument. These are pokemon, pocket monsters. Not animals. They are monsters, creatures, ghosts, plants, and even objects.
I was totally sold on Sprigatito since I saw it's first photo, and honestly couldn't be happier with my choice. Meowscarada is just sick and the signature move is awesome!
I almost always go for the grass starter anyway, but I also like Meowscarade for that phantom thief aura that have. About the anthropomorphic thing, I personally have never been disturbed by a fictional animal becoming bipedal, fiction could take many forms, sure there are weirdos out there, but they're not going away even if we ban this style.
There a difference between bipedal and anthropomorphic. Once they become sapaint, they aint "animals" anymore. They're just different looking people, which seems very wrong for a pokemon.
The thing is, Meowscarada is still very animalistic. They’re still an anatomical cat and they still act and sound like one as well, especially as a pose to Pokémon like Incineroar. If anything, they remind me a little bit of Gromit from “Wallace and Gromit” and 808 from “Hi-Fi Rush”. Both are characters that can walk on two legs and four legs and show signs of sentience and high intelligence, but they’re still a dog and a cat respectively and still act and sound accordingly.
I was sold on Meowscarada the second I laid eyes on it. I got a female Sprigatito, and named her Elaine, and, now, she's one of the stars of my team. 😊
When I first saw the starters Sprigatito was the easy favorite, with Fuecoco being a close second, and Quaxly... was also there. Those opinions never changed during any of their evolutions. I've never really cared about if pokemon were bipedal or not and personally think the harlequin theme of Meowscarada is really neat!
Agreed. Most of my favorite pokemon are actually bipedal, but I also love quadrupedal pokemon. My overall favorite pokemon is lucario for instance, and for starters it was Cinderace although now meowscarada gives it some competition, but I also love torterra, samurott, canine pokemon in general, luxray, etc.
I feel I should mention that all the starters have the same gender ratio, it’s not supposed to a part of their species’ design and how that affects the perception of their masculinity, femininity or androgyny. Rather it exists to show WHY the starters are a rare species. Basically, uneven ratio of more males than females equals a low birthrate.
3:47 My Meowscarada (in which I've named it "Sonic" due of being my faster starter) always does this too. I tend to die of cuteness, because he's always running around me and getting close to me. Thats how much has bonded to me. Plus, I always use it as my first Pokémon and I don't even need to use the rest so much. And when he dies to a strong Pokémon, I use my shiny Lucario as my alternative.
At first I wasn’t feeling the Gen 9 starters (because I thought the Sprigatito and Quaxly line would be Zorro/Puss in Boots and Navy Admiral/Pirate respectfully). But I later warmed up to the final designs (that’s what I get for feeding too much into fakemons). Looking at Meowscarada’s design reminds me of NiGHTS (a realm which I think would fit perfectly in). Anyways, it’s amazing how the street Magician, Masquerade, Phantom Thief, and Jester theme have blended together into this Mon (as far as it’s Dark-typing). Another thing I’ve noticed is that the top half of Meowscarada’s mask is supposed to also represent its cat ears, since the real ones have thinned. I like the way it runs since it’s obviously the fastest out of the trio (mimicking the style of Naruto or Inuyasha). It’s move Flower Trick is a brilliant compliment to its theme of misdirection, since it never misses (unless Protect or Detect is used) along with its surefire crit rate.
@@antiblock1649 lol I know it’s just the IVs I was focused on and I wasn’t planning on hyper training. Future proofing when newer gens come out you know?
I love the entire sprigatito line! I think meowscarada is a lot of fun! I especially love its squiggly mouth and funky floaty flower and of course, the toe beans.
Finally someone agrees that Meowscarada doesn't look female at all. That and since fancy sneaky magicians have been one of my favorite character tropes of all time, so I really liked this evolution. Also, I feel like Meowscarada does the "furry pokemon" thing well, because it's obviously an animal creature. It has the face and limbs of a cat, but the rest is human, unlike Incin, which has a very cartooney and human face. That's part of the reason people dislike these designs but can't seem to pinpoint that this is the source of it.
Pokémon designs will always be contentious because they’re entirely subjective. I really don’t mind the combination of anthropomorphising and human archetypes because I feel it adds so much personality to starters. With Mewscarada’s design I could easily imagine it running around an opponents attacks with a smug grin or playing tricks on people.
I gotta be honest , I was going for sprigatito but after seeing the absolute fabulous Quaquaval ,I knew that I needed this sassy peacock in my game. Meowscarada is still really cool and I will get him on my other account.
I wanted Quaxly to head towards flamboyant fighter rather than dancer (thinking conquistador or musketeer rather than carnivale dancer). I suspect a lot of "insert reference anime reference" fans are in that boat - and the hair didn't help. It also would have allowed for a psychic water starter, which would be insane, and the idea of the Pokemon standing in for you in the fight has a certain parallel synergy there. Now if he started off more peacock typed, I'd be more on board with the carnivale finisher. It's just a bit weird that he ends up a different animal, like if Sprigatito ended up a fox in the end.
Honestly the Sprigatito line is definitely one of my favorites. First of all, it starts off as a cat, I like cats. Then it becomes el Gato con Botas (I refuse to call him by his English name), using a rose to replace the sword? LOVE THAT. Then finally, I'm just a huge fan of magician-themed whatever lmao. Oh and also, I personally think GF really wanted to go with a Phantom Thief vibe for Meowscarada. With the mask, flowers and dark typing? Yeah, lol. On the bipedal "issue". I think it really is just vocal minority. SV is pretty rough around the edges (except it's mostly edges), so it's likely this just became one more argument that got shoved in the "don't buy it" train. Like, I seriously doubt any kid really cares that their cat stood up, I know damn well I didn't when my cat decided to become a boxer lol.
Floragato has nothing to do with Puss in Boots. Besides, what does it matter refusing to use the English name when it's an Italian fairy tale anyway. Il gatto con gli stivali
that’s what I wanna believe but the animation Nintendo picked is just so weird the only innocent way I can think of it is like a cat rubbing its face on urs which is what I’m hoping Nintendo wanted it to look like
@@Dog-be2dt That’s what I mean. If they had named it “Nyagic” or “Meowgic”, it would have sounded too similar to a Pokémon name that already exists. And “Nya” is just “Meow” in Japanese. It wouldn’t be weird to use in a Pokémon name unless people insisted on *making* it weird.
Meowscarada rant: I love how fast it is. As long as I’m not dashing it can keep up. Grass dark is now gonna one of my favourite typings. It looks like it’s very agile as well as acrobatic. Flower trick is fun to use. I also like how well the move animations look matched with Meowscarada’s battle animations.
To be honest, I was actually hoping for a bipedal evolution to begin with, perhaps something along the lines of Puss in Boots (which I’m now sure you could easily get with a cosplaying Meowth or Purloin) but what we got is the Masquerade Magician Cat: Meowscarada. Now That is Awesome! And I really like it. Sprigatito’s whole evolution line has actually become one of my new favourites among the starters. It almost has the qualities of both Joker and Morgana from Persona 5 rolled into one, as well as Sylvando from “Dragon Quest XI” and a slew of many other different characters. I wonder if we’ll get any more Pokemon that people hope don’t stand up but if they do, then they still amaze everyone.
I love meowscarada so much. as a theater kid to the max when I saw it I instantly got massive phantom of the opera vibes and fell in love. I love the theater cat,It’s cool looking and still adorable, its bipedal but still feels like a cat. The theater cat is wonderful. Also I know there’s gonna be comments about it. Yes I know it’s based on a magician too, pokemon can have more than one inspiration ya know. Also magic shows are a type of threatrical performance.
Meowscarada has a really cool design, but video game wise, it REALLY made me think of a Nightmaran from the Nights into Dreams franchise when I first saw it. The gender ambiguous, vaguely feminine body type, the mask with 2 large points, the magical clown aesthetic...you can put this pokemon right into the beloved Sega franchise and it would fit right in (heck, I named my personal one Whisper, after a Sega character, because the facial markings resemble hers) It IS my favorite out of this generation, but I gotta love Quaquaval for it's FABULOUS moves, in all honesty THAT one reminds me of a Brazillian Carnival dancer with the way it dances. I mean this with ALL of my love and affection when I say I would not be surprised if it becomes an LGBTQ mascot. Skeledirge I find to be the sort of boring one, since it's mostly just a red alligator, BUT it's signature move where it rears up and forms a mic stand out of the bird shaped flame on its snout before belting out a tune like freaking Vector the Crocodile is ALL sorts of awesome and really redeems it for me.
I mean, Quaquaval _should_ remind you of a Brazilian Carnival dancer, because that's what it was designed to be. In fact, all three SV starters are based in-part on some form of celebration. Meowscarada is heavily inspired by both Masquerade balls and by Mardi Gras and Skeledirge's el Día de los Muertos influences are EXTREMELY obvious.
I chose sprigatito for my first playthrough as well and when it evolved into mewscarada I was really annoyed it was bipedal and then immediately stopped caring when I saw how broken its signature move was
I will say that I have absolutely grown love all the starter designs! I must admit that I was mainly hesitant with Skeledirge, but after using it in my main playthrough I loved it. Same goes for Meowscarada. My classic U-turn having scout. I unfortunately don't have much to say on Quaquaval (I never used it) but I love all the flairs they added to its design! I can see why people are mad about the increasing number of humanoid mons, but I feel like as long as you can have fun with the game then there's no full point in judging.
Quaquaval has a large move pool and the move Aqua Step increases its speed each time. If throw in its hidden ability Moxie (combined with Aqua Step), then Quaquaval will straight up body its competition single-handedly.
Personal take regarding humanoid pokemon (and humanoid mons in the genre in general): while i never exactly hated such mons in the first place (infact, i quite like my meowscaradas, cinderaces, machamps, delphoxes, etc), the fact that they are so close to being human that it calls the fact that they are being treated like wild animals into question brings up alot of moral implications, its one thing to simply be bipedal (nidoking, rhyperior, palkia, emboar, etc.), its another thing to be a human with a different coat of paint and/or with a pelt
Tbh, this is one of these things I enjoyed with the Detective Pikachu Movies, how while some Pokemon are more animal like, others basically just live side by side with humans in cities and are just doing their thing. I feel like it could be nice of Gamefreak ever incorperates this a bit into the design of cities, that pokemon aren't necessarily just all like pets in human civilization but just living there among humans.
I gotta say, I'm getting sick of people dissing Pokémon designs solely for being anthro/bipedal or writing them off as "furry bait". And I say this as someone who generally prefers more animalistic/monstrous designs. First of all, anthro designs are very common and are not inherently bad or intended to be sexualized. The only anthro Pokémon that are actually suggestive-looking are Lopunny, due to being inspired by Playboy bunnies, and Salazzle, due to it's whole deal being that it attracts male Salandit and forms a harem. Even then, they're still animals in a kid-friendly game and thus aren't really that sexual. Second, a lot of these anthro Pokémon are based on concepts that would require them to be bipedal/humanoid to some extent. For example, Cinderace is meant to be a football/soccer player, and is bipedal to fit that. Quadraped designs are not inherently better than biped designs or vice versa, it depends on the intended theme. I wish some fans would learn to judge these desgins for what they actually are, rather than how some people might interpret them.
Sprigatito’s evolutionary chain is a bit hilarious to me. He starts as this diminutive little kitten, who might comfortably fit on your lap or be carried in your arms. Then it becomes this 6’ tall humanoid, who demands the same affections due to its attention-seeking nature. And likely claws all your furniture.
Sometimes I feel like I am the only Quaxly fan in the house. I initially didn't like the final evolution, but then I saw the idle animation and I fell helplessly in love with it. It's literally so charismatic and funny.
My first thought when it came to Meowscarada, is Phantom of the Opera or an actor/actress in a play on stage, and in this case a he, Meowscarada has grown on me.
Same. Tbh, not sure why they leaned so much into the magician aspect as the other two starters are based on a dancer and a singer so it makes more sense that Meowscarada would be an actor. But they definitely kept some actor elements there like some of its animations, its signature move with the switching stage lights and the dark type which could imply the drama/tragedy types of theatre.
My problem with meowscarada is that it doesn't fully commit to being slick or dopey and ends up in an unsatisfying spot somewhere around the middle. In a sense I preferred the second stage of the line. Personally I don't mind the more anthropomorphic designs, as I've always enjoyed Gallade and Cinderace was by far my favorite out of the galar trio.
That’s really the only reason why Meowscarada isn’t my favorite mega evolution out of the three. That title belongs to Mr. Dancy Duck (lol) If your gonna gave a flashy cat magician then GO ALL OUT! I was expecting a top had and a cape but what we got isn’t so bad. I like the idle pose.
Honestly, I think the whole bipedal issue stemmed from Incineroar. Look at Litten and Torracat, and then incineroar. One of these things is not like the other. I was honestly expecting gamefreak to reveal some badass looking sabretooth firecat... but then we got a... pro wrestler? Whereas with Meowscarada, it started standing up on two feet in the mid-stage, giving us an almost puss-in-boots-esque mon that totally worked for the direction they were taking Sprigatito. Its the same with the Tepig line, it started on all fours and hits bipedal in the midstage, and outside of it not being the best looking design (some even call it flat out ugly), it was generally received well. Fennekin went bipedal with Braixen, not Delphox, and Chespin was always bipedal. Greninja consistantly stayed on all four limbs, but that was more out of the mon doing cool ninja poses for his sprites, and was most certainly bipedal. Incineroar was the only one that went from on all fours in the midstage to bipedal, and that's when a lot of the people started getting really vocal about it. Gen 8's starters were all bipedal from the very beginning, so they were kinda a moot point to begin with, though they were all also generally well received.
I really don't get people who complain about these things. So some pokemon are human-looking. Lots of pokemon are quadrepedal, lots are bipedal but without human proportions, lots have more or less legs and look even further removed from looking remotely human. If a design works, then a design works. I like sprigatito's evolutions, and even Fauna liked them too. It only took a few seconds after evolving for her to call floragato cute. I doubt she wouldn't have even reacted the way you showed her if people didn't make a big deal about sprigatito going two or four legs in the first place.
Another cool thing about Meowscarada is that it potentially takes design inspiration from stereotypical magician's assistants. The legs on Meowscarada to me look like they're meant to somewhat resemble skintight leggings, and the shine on the offical art seems to reinforce that idea. The fur poofing out below the waist also looks a bit like a short skirt, dress, or shorts. All of those qualities are common looks for stereotypical magician's assistants. Look up images of "magician's assistant" and you'll see what I mean. Also, the strut it does during its signature move looks a bit like the strutting a magician's assistant would do when presenting a trick, but that's a bit more of a stretch
One of my favorite starters. It hits so many things for me It just looks really cool It’s dark type (one of my favorite types) A magician (I love magic and it’s a reason delphox is my favorite Pokémon) And still looks high as hell (weed cat is funny)
@@harry.t.radio95237I mean… you are kinda right. The definition of a furry is an anthropomorphic animal, but yes, that doesn’t necessarily mean an anthropomorphic animal is a furry.
@@Bea-h6b Also, I wouldn’t say that Meowscarada is Entirely anthropomorphic. Sure they stand on two legs and their fur and features resemble clothes (and they have their mask) but they’re still an anatomical cat and they still act like one as well. So they’re not really an Anthropomorphic cat, rather just a Bipedal one. They’re still very animalistic.
I think all 3 of them are based around dancing in some way or a type of dance. Being bipedal while not essential for dance it helps. Even Sekedirge since fire dances are a thing.
I don't know why Sprigatito is getting so much hate. I picked it as my starter and I love him. His design is giving me Phantom of them opera/ magician vibes and flower trick is awesome.
I can’t claim to like the humanoid starters, but it’s mostly because they look so much like characters more than creatures. They just look like they speak English. Quaquaval in particular would fit perfectly into Ducktales.
Pokemon are foremost monsters and not animals, hence them being Pocket Monsters. The majority of mythological monsters are anthropomorphic in some way because humans are more inclined to other something as a monster when it looks vaguely humanoid but there's something clearly wrong with it. While it is not always the case, the less anthropomorphized something is the closer it becomes to an animal. To reiterate, Pokemon are not animals. They are monsters with (mostly) animal-inspired traits. Any way they choose to look is inherently valid on this basis. If you are unsettled by how humanoid a Pokemon looks, that's a good thing. It means it's doing its job as a *monster*. If you don't like the design because you have a problem with people being pervs on the internet or furries... That's just a different issue to unpack altogether.
True, and its not like the artists care how suggestive the pokemon is anyways. They just need one talented h3ntei artist to make a model that is, then they mostly just copy that. The orginal model is practically irrelevant at that point
MEOWSCARADA IS LITERALLY MY FAVORITE POKÉMON! I chose Sprigato in the beginning of Pokemon Violet (because I love cats) and I never expected it to evolve into this, in a good way! I actually never thought that Meowscarada was a magician, as I never read the Pokédex about it, instead I thought it was a partly a Ninja because of how fast he can go- which makes it more awesome for me now I know that he is basically a magician Pokemon. (Oh I named it Star btw because I thought it was female in the beginning- I did figure out he was male eventually by looking at my boxes- but I still keep the name cuz it reminds me a ninja star :D, which suits it’s ninja-like personality I thought it has)
I was sold on Meowscarda as soon as I heard about the inspiration
My love for it skyrocketed when I saw it in a picnic sprinting around like a wild animal that learned about Naruto running

I actually picked Sprigatito as my starter for my first play through. I had known what the final evolution looked like already but I did not know its signature move. I love using Flower Trick in battle. Although something I noticed is that all three starters have a theme of being performers; magician, dancer, and singer.

@@nonyanae2 tho in raid battles i wish i could skip the move anims cuz that wastes alot of time hhh

The Magician Arcana is also a Tarot card that states "The message is to tap into one's full potential rather than holding back, especially when there is a need to transform something." I feel of the 3 protean starters, Meowscarada has the most creative take to justify an ability for a starter that I've ever seen.
it also helps that it learns a lot of strong coverage moves
I like Protean, but I also like the defense against certain types that it gets thanks to Dark typing. Sure, it gets 2x Bug Damage and one more weakness, but it also gets halved damage against everything else but FOUR types AND immunity to psychic. I decided to leave its Ability as it is when I got the Ability Patch.
There’s a reason I called mine Morgana
It’s because mona is apparently banned for some reason
Also they just merged protean

As it stands, my Meowscarada is a chaos demon in every sense of the word and I’d do anything for him 🥺❤️
Meowscarada has had it's reputation literally be 'Oh No! Anyways'. Once the criticism has gone and passed and actual feelings kick in, it is good to see that people are liking the design of it. I personally do like Meowscarada similarly to how I like Cinderace. I was skeptical at first for both of them, but grew to like them both respectively.
I feel it certainly helps that it kept all the feline characteristics that it's hot-headed Hawaiian cousin so carelessly threw away.
Weed cat? More like Catnip
I like Meowscarada but I CANNOT bring myself to appreciate Cinderace in any way. Not a fan of the Galarian starters overall.
For me, Mewoscarada didn't really hit that well when I only knew its artwork, but it really grew on me in 3D, especially in combination with flower trick. I really like how its jester-like design plays perfectly into its dark typing.

Yeah it's design seems more gender neutral
And not to mention the fact that the gender ratio for Meowscarada is mostly male meaning it wasn’t made to be a “waifu Pokemon”. I don’t even think Pokemon has even made any Pokemon to be “waifu material”, people just sexualise them too much for some reason.

3:36 Did they really yassify Gardevoir in the TCG?
3:47 My Meowscarada (in which I've named it "Sonic" due of being my faster starter) always does this too. I tend to die of cuteness, because he's always running around me and getting close to me. Thats how much has bonded to me. Plus, I always use it as my first Pokémon and I don't even need to use the rest so much. And when he dies to a strong Pokémon, I use my shiny Lucario as my alternative.
I named my Meowscarada Sora

They actually don’t really give off any “humanoid” vibes at all for me. They feel a lot more like, well, a cat.
meowscarada and its prior evolutions are awesome, but skeledirge and quaquaval and their lines are also super awesome, i love all of them
3:45 bro, why is you meowscarada so short?
I see what you mean, GameFreak employed various “mix and match critters” idea for Quaqusval’s design.
Personal preference? or has the English version of that name been ruined in your eyes by Shrek?
Floragato has nothing to do with Puss in Boots. Besides, what does it matter refusing to use the English name when it's an Italian fairy tale anyway. Il gatto con gli stivali
@@Blackheartzero I think it might be because that word for cat has been ruined by being used as a connotation for... women's private parts

that’s what I wanna believe but the animation Nintendo picked is just so weird the only innocent way I can think of it is like a cat rubbing its face on urs which is what I’m hoping Nintendo wanted it to look like
@@MiniforceRailfanMeowscaradas are more male than female
Idk who you are honestly and this showed up, but then you put Fauna in your vid, that alone means you're quite based. Subbed
I love Floragato and Sprigatito! Meowscarada is cool too
I'm disappointed that its name wasn't Nyagic or Meowgic though
Idk, Meowscarada is pretty good. Mascarada (Masquerade) and Meow.
That might’ve come across as a little too close to “Meowstic”, but “Nyascarada” would have been extra-cute.
@@blueblank8287 Meowstic exists and how many catgirl fanart have you seen to want a pokemon to have "Nya" in the name?
no offense btw
@@Dog-be2dt That’s what I mean. If they had named it “Nyagic” or “Meowgic”, it would have sounded too similar to a Pokémon name that already exists. And “Nya” is just “Meow” in Japanese. It wouldn’t be weird to use in a Pokémon name unless people insisted on *making* it weird.
Meowscarada rant:
I love how fast it is. As long as I’m not dashing it can keep up. Grass dark is now gonna one of my favourite typings. It looks like it’s very agile as well as acrobatic. Flower trick is fun to use. I also like how well the move animations look matched with Meowscarada’s battle animations.
3:11 wait, wth, my irl cat's name used to be Figaro before I got him and gave him a different name
Meowscarada is an incredible attacker. And it's got an amazing move pool that can even act with some support moves.
I love its speed stat, I equipped mine with Acrobatics and Power Gem to help it deal with Fighting, Flying, Fire, and especially Bug types.
Don’t forget it’s hair and arms being based on clowns or jesters
Meowscarada would be a perfect fit for the NiGHTS realm.
Meowscarada reminds me more of NiGHTS than Reala. They feel more like the hero type than a villain.
2:42 say it with me
GRASS TYPE GRENINJA
You aren’t wrong though XD
@@shizachan8421 yeah
Honestly, i like all the starters. My favorite being Quaquaval by a small margin.
They do be dancing 🦆
Pity they’re not nearly as popular.
You forgot Sneasler.
A fun fact, according to her Violet's Dex Entry, Tsareena views Quaquaval as her rival.
3:18 I don't understand how people can use this ratio as an argument for something or anything. Just roll the gender you desire the most...
Moewscrada is underrated, it’s my favourite grass type pokemon
I'm glad ppl are finally moving over the hate for gen 9 starters. All of them are cool :3
Sometimes I feel like I am the only Quaxly fan in the house. I initially didn't like the final evolution, but then I saw the idle animation and I fell helplessly in love with it. It's literally so charismatic and funny.
I like Quaxly too, the final evo’s design just oozes personality.
My first thought when it came to Meowscarada, is Phantom of the Opera or an actor/actress in a play on stage, and in this case a he, Meowscarada has grown on me.
My first thought was that it was a Zorro/Puss in Boots inspired design but we kinda got one last gen with the Nickit line.
People: "I hate bipeadel humanoid starters!"
Also them: "Decidueye, Blaiziken, Rillaboom are all amazing!"
To be fair, Owls, Gorillas and Chickens are bipedal.
Not humanoid though. (Well, maybe Gorillas a bit)
The pushback on anthros is silly to me. I love them lol
It hits so many things for me
It just looks really cool
It’s dark type (one of my favorite types)
A magician (I love magic and it’s a reason delphox is my favorite Pokémon)
And still looks high as hell (weed cat is funny)
“…which remain quadrupedal. Mostly”
_looks at Perserrker and Meowstic, smiles fondly_
"Waifumon" "furry bait"... The people that say this are the ones at fault for seeing these animals attractive/compatible.
They clearly don’t realise that an animal walking on two legs doesn’t automatically make them a “furry”. They’ve clearly never seen “Puss in Boots”.
Just say u a furry dude nothing to be ashamed about
@@harry.t.radio95237 fair enough! Hopefully the anime will make it talk
I think all 3 of them are based around dancing in some way or a type of dance. Being bipedal while not essential for dance it helps. Even Sekedirge since fire dances are a thing.
I think the problem with anthro pokemon is that they seem to be more and less beast looking nowadays
I don't know why Sprigatito is getting so much hate. I picked it as my starter and I love him. His design is giving me Phantom of them opera/ magician vibes and flower trick is awesome.
Skeledirge straight up did the opposite of the litten line, at least in the way they stand
Honestly I wanna a pile of plush of bipedal Pokémon, just some of them as they look huggable and cuddly
I can’t claim to like the humanoid starters, but it’s mostly because they look so much like characters more than creatures. They just look like they speak English. Quaquaval in particular would fit perfectly into Ducktales.
I'd hate to break it to you but pokemon have always been characters.
2:50 need mommy lol
The orginal model is practically irrelevant at that point
honestly, when i saw meowscarada, i thought of a drug dealer lmao
I love skelederge because the contrast between a giant croc and the cute Lil fire birb is hilarious
Quaquaval is personally my favorite out the 3, he just has such a funny, goofy personality.
I dont mind Meowscarada because it still looks like an animal at the end of the day.
Yeah, I think this Gen did a good job with the balance in that aspect.
@@GatorEX Yeah. At first I wasnt fine with them besides Skeledirge, but the more I look at them, the more I'm okay with their designs.
Does it though? It looks significantly more humanoid than animal to me.
It does not look like an animal. People that think characters with anthropomorphia are still animals have a mental d1sability, I swear.
@@Goro_Maj1ma The only humanoid(ish) aspect is that they walk on two legs. Other than that, they’re still an anatomical cat.
originally i hated Meowscarada, but after facing so many in my quest to hit master rank, i’ve grown to respect it. I’m glad i know how to counter it
MEOWSCARADA IS LITERALLY MY FAVORITE POKÉMON! (Oh I named it Star btw because I thought it was female in the beginning- I did figure out he was male eventually by looking at my boxes- but I still keep the name cuz it reminds me a ninja star :D, which suits it’s ninja-like personality I thought it has)
hey man, weed cat turns bipedal, and amongus croc turns quadripedal
