Shimano's spec sheet says they're 3/32" bearings, 14 per race. I've just installed some new ones and still trying to get the locknut tightened to my satisfaction. Thanks for the breakdown!

I finally found a way to 'lock' the cone into the locknut (since there's no keyed washer). If you tighten an acorn nut from a V-brake pad onto the axle after the locknut (it may be slightly crossthreaded??), it will hold the locknut in place while backing the cone into it, and an milled-down thin socket will fit over it. Then just remove the acorn nut once it's adjusted properly and locked.

Nice one. I've just been trying and failing to get the cone and locknut right on my oldish shimano dx pedals. Maybe I'll dig out an acorn nut and see if I can make it work that way. Bloody annoying pedal design that you can't grip the cone and the locknut simultaneously! 🤦🏻‍♂️

These are an awful design and very difficult to adjust properly.
