Shimano could come out with re-editions of XT 730, The old Deore, XTR 900, XTR 950/951/952, STX RC and Dura-Ace around 1991 - and a lot of fans would buy.
I bought a 1989 Diamondback Apex off eBay a few months ago. It was all original including the tires. When the bike arrived and I put it together it was just like it came off the showroom floor. The BB was still tight and had no wobble, the shifters ran through the gears without a hiccup. I took the headset and BB apart and believe it or not they still had grease in them. I did clean everything up and regreased everything but it really didn't need it. Now I go out riding and I never worry about component failure because the Deore is bomb proof. The bike performs just like it did in 89. Shimano Deore and Deore XT were the gold standard back then and 30 years later it's just as good as the day it left the factory.
Hi. I haver a bike that is equipped with this groupset, except for the front hub, Deore XT M730. It has now about 26 years. No problems. Only periodic clean and lubrication. It has a crankset Shimano Biopace. An awesome cromoly Tange double butted frame.
I have the a 1990 GT Team Avalanche that has the complete Shimano Deore XT M735 groupset. Difference being I have the combo XT 3x7 shifters. Even Deore XT Cantilever brakes. It shifts like gold! Click, Click, Click. Got it this summer used for 100.00 from the original owner. I ride it on the trails of Niagara. IMHO Shimano Japan was using quality alloys back then. There is no wear on the cassette or chain rings. Can't say that for newer Tourney, Acera, Alivio or Deore today. They are all pressed metals.
I'm pretty sure the original stock BB for M730 would've been a loose/cup-and-cone one (BB-M730), but if it's a BB-UN70, it might be original from an M735 group (which still had some crossover with M730 components). The shifters and derailleur appear to be M735 (7s RapidFire)
Great video! I’ve got an old Bontrager Race with a mixture of old DX, old LX, m950, and old STX-RC. I’m slowly replacing some the componentry to as much m-737 and m-900 as possible. A cool project to be sure! Yes! I agree, old school bikes are sweet!
i ride every day a mule with a mix of deore xt m732 and deore II mt-62 those RD will run almost any cassette regardless of number of speeds, i run mine in a 10 speed with the thumb shifter set in friction mode, but they were designed for 130mm axles so they are a bit at theyr limit in modern 135 any way even tough the first shimano 8 speed set was the xtr m800, u can actually run a xt732 shifter in a 8 speed tnx to a ghost position in its index sistem, but that works only for the thumbies also if you change the pulley from the original 10t to a 11t (with bearings whould be better) you will be able to run with no problems 11t cassetts (original manual says that cassets must be 12t minimum) also strictly speaking is someone is inclined, and has a lathe and a milling machine you can convert the 732 thumb shifter to run 12 speed, but you have to understand how they work first, sincle you'll have to remachine the indexing disc inside the shifter
i'm the original owner of a 1989 TREK 8500 mtb, with the shimano xt2 group. Still riding it in 2021 that's almost 32 years!!! of riding. NO ISSUES WHATSOEVER! Just regular cleaning/greasing/adjustment of bearings. ALL parts are built tank tough and that is no modern horsehshit sales drivel. This 'new skool' stuff will NOT be around in 32 years I guarantee.
I have the original M730 6 speed all in great condition. As you say that BB is super smooth, better than my modern BBs. M730 was 6 speed and Uniglide with 130 spacing, the following year with M732 was 7 speed and moved to 135 spacing
I have two new old school hubs to build up. One is the Deore XT M732 and the other is the deore LX M550. The deore LX is 28 grams lighter than the Deore XT, but the Deore XT has smoother bearings and a better cassette hub body. Which one should I set aside and choose to build with?
All the videos from this channel are a bike University for me, and you are a phd. in bike maintenaice. So many things i learn from you. Keep going in this way! 👍👍👌👌👏👏👏
Working on a project. 1996 GT Zaskar. Deore XT M735 drivetrain with Raceface crankset. The RD is saveable. What XT 7 speed shifters would you suggest? The ones it came with are these broken and ugly XT combo shifters.
get the SL m732 thumb shifters, they can run 8speed casettes in sis and anything you can trow in a 135 axle in friction mode (actually since 735 STI used to break down there was a conversion kit to mount 732cores on top of the 735 plate, but it made everything even more ugly) plus since they're spring assisted the shifting is effortless and like butter
What are the numbers significant of I'm currently putting together a M739 set from Shimano Deore XT what is the difference with like M730? Or M739 also there is the two letters before the M7-- is this just like FD- M739 meaning front derailleur etc if someone could explain this would be awesome J
initial letters mean the part, like Hb (hub), bl (brake lever), st (shifting trigger, available from 735 onwards in if i remeber correctly they were the st-m090) etc the number was indicative of the generation/year difference was features and generally they were dictated by year of manufacturin, for example 730 was a 6 speed, 732 is a 7 speed (capable of 8 in sis, and i run mine in friction mode so basically it will work with any cassette that you put in a 135 axle), 733 and 734 were different brakes for the 732 735 was the first set born (same year as the first xtr m800)with the STI combination, and had adjustable spring tension for both derailleurs 737 was the first xt born for 8 speed (and sti) 739 was the first xt born for v brakes (before this evryting was running canti and with 2mm oversized cable, even tough it was compatible with standard whire)
works fine with 9 speed cassettes and 10 speed. I just remounted the stuff back to my bike and combined the FD-M320 with my 9 gear cassette and it works fine with new aluminiumwheels instad of the weared off plastik shiftwheels. That there is no more exage today made me really sad. The only series you can compare to my old LX is.. nothing at all. Not even XT, not even XTR, NOTHING!
When planning serious adventure touring "in the middle of nowhere," it is hypercritical to chose components that simply don't break. So, here's my question: If one hasn't some old bikes to cannibalize, what new components dare one buy?

Great video dude! I'm a big fan of old Shimano groups mainly between the years 92-96!
Thanks so much!

I never changed the chain,BB, crankset or headset. The bike was built to run,not repair.

love old school shimano..had a bike with Shimano STX..that stuff could take a beating.
Durable deore xt for ever.
You said it.

Amazing. I have a Cinelli Rampichino Vertical since 1988 with all original Shimano Deore XT components ... actually in use ;)
I'm riding 730 crankset with un71 BB. I totally love it. I'm not a purist, so other parts are from many different sets ;)

Not the period correct bottom bracket. The 730 bottom bracket would be the right now, cup and cone bearings not cartridge.

Thats why shimano retained the cone bearing technology instead of sealed bearing on the freehub, cone bearing is old but exist in 25 years.
Your videos are the best. Great subjects, great editing.
+Rob Bastien Thank you Rob, it's really great to have such viewers as you. Cheers!
Pls review the comparable SRAM groupset.

Ahhhh need to complete my xt groupset
do you know what is the compatible replacement for Deore XT RD-M735 SGS pulleys?

Hi Sick!
Did you ride this group on any bike?
I have bike Wheeler 8000 that are dedicated to M-730 92/93 years
fuul gold deore xt
works fine with 9 speed cassettes and 10 speed. I have a question pls. Answer, can you do a review on the Shimano STX groupset?
Yes, I have some stx parts.
@@cannondany awesome! Love your vids keep doing them proud subscriber from the Philippines

Old school is quality!
+HOPKIRK YEAH!
You said it. I never had to replace my deraillures or anything else on my old DB.
Czm nie ma polskiego odpowiednika filmu
im using an RD-M739 with a 1x9 11-42 cassette using an extension from aliexpress
Great idea for a video
