Pretty amazing bike well worth restoring . A part of history that should not be forgotten . The early Deore xt was the forebear of so many future innovations . The first road bike brifters were based off these shifters.
Well, this made my day. I love the look of 80's ATBs so two weeks ago I picked up a neglected '85 Trek 870 to be my cool old steel All-rounder. I knew enough about components to know early Shimano wasn't going to be junk but didn't know the deerhead XT groupset was well regarded or rare. For once, apparently I lucked out. Congrats on your find and cheers from the States. Looking forward to watching this restoration--especially the seatpost removal!
My '85 Schwinn Cimarron came with deer head everything, aside from the rear derailleur, which the seller swapped for the infamous Suntour LePree 3 pulley mech. I really couldn't complain about that. Also, the original Nitto MT-1 stem was swapped for an SR MTS-101 bullmoose stem. Seller took $60 and upon tearing it down, I found $3 and some change, tire levers, patch kit and a c02 cartridge in old dusty frame bag that came with!
Wow great find!! I’m from Canada Ontario and I’ve had the pleasure of finding two bike with all original dear head minus the hubs! Those are a grails!Love the content brother
Fantastic find....... I have a Saracen Conquest pretty much the same but in a bit better condition......deerhead levers and shifters are apocalypse proof.....the hubs are super cool......and the brakes are the the most powerful cantis I've ever used....the nitto bars and stem are lovely but weigh a ton swapped mine out just to save some weight
Thats a lovely find! I do the same, ie an Eddie Merckx from the early 80's in disgusting rotten condition but with a brilliant Shimano Arabesque groupset!
I just bought a 1986 Rockhopper completely original with all the XT stuff and original pedals for $60. Everything works. I’m thinking that was a good deal.
No way 😂😂😂 I bought one in 85 to replace the Ridgeback XT. It cost me £750. The saddle is original, a B66 only mine was black with red coils. The rear mech was called a Shimano Super Plate I think and it was designed for double parallelogram shifting and it had a 1 inch cable with a nipple on each end. That's a great find mate. if you can find the parts.......? Looking forward to the build either way. 👍☺
B66 is original you say? I'm sure the chap said he'd only recently bought it but left the bike outside. Could have replaced ti with original though I guess!
@@MonkeyShred Absolutely. Thinking back, it was probably the most comfortable saddle I have ever ridden. I certainly don't recall breaking it in unlike the B17 I bought a few years later.
These are the best thumbies I have ever used. Super slick motion with positive clicks. Shifting is so clean with deer heads.
Hopefully I’ll have a frame in my size to put them back on soon! (This frame ended up going to Toasty Rides in New Zealand)

Fortunately, the seatpost came out fairly easily! I do think Deerhead is fairly rare/hard to come by. Good luck with your build

And you'll easily make that remainging $57!
My first mtb was a 1988 Saracen , great little bike.
I wish this was a little bike!
I love old and rusty frames
There are sometimes some gems around!

When I identified the hubs form the pics I knew I had to have it!
Love the skin wall tires and matching saddle!! Do it right!
We'll see what happens with it!
The Shimano Deer head is still stored, it is indeed very beautiful
My Deerhead group is almost complete ✌️
@@MonkeyShred 😁👍
@@MonkeyShred What parts haven't 😁👍

Bars and stem definitely have some heft about them! I'd love to find a frame in my size that I can use it all on.
Those hubs would go nice with a complement of Sapim Lasers and brass spoke washers 😉
They would go great with anything not rusty at the moment! ;)
I thought it was like a minivelo at first sight, didn't realise it was just enormous!
It's a 23/25"! One of the two!
This looks like the bike that Adam from @toastyrides in New Zealand fixed up. Nice tag team👌
That’s definitely the one. He did a freeking amazing job with it too!
What a find! 頑張てください!
I had to snap it up quickly when I realised!
great find! friction all the way,, i got only the derailleurs for cheap, but shifter is sooo difficult to find
There’s a few knocking around on eBay but it’s the hubs that look to be the hardest to find!
Thats a lovely find! I do the same, ie an Eddie Merckx from the early 80's in disgusting rotten condition but with a brilliant Shimano Arabesque groupset!
Oooo Arabesque! Very nice!
Great find!!!
Thanks!

Cor, not even seen those shifters before. Are they indexed? Nice find , once again 🚴👍
Pre SIS index friction they are
As Ray says, 3x6 speed friction shifting.

Where do you normally find all your bikes?
eBay, sometimes Facebook but finding bargains is getting so hard.
Интересный экземпляр, по большому счету, не плохо сохранился
Я думаю, это в основном поверхностная ржавчина.
Sweet!
Dude!
Is this bike project ever going to materialize?
Not in my hands. It’s in New Zealand now with Toasty Rides.
@@MonkeyShred In other words, its toast!
At last, a bike my size.
Giant.
Ha. Ha.
How much did you pay for that bike?
One hundred of the finest British pounds
