- Many people ask me about a bag or pouch with a zipper panel on top, so I made this video where I show you a way to do it without having to hand stitch. You might have seen an old tutorial I made for a weekender bag where we had to hand stitch the lining to the zipper panel. • How to make a Travel Bag
I hope this is useful.
MATERIALS:
MAIN FABRIC:
2 pieces: 8 1/2" x 11" for the body
1 piece: 7 1/4" x 11" for the front pocket
1 piece: 1 1/2" x 11" for the top of the pocket (above the zipper).
1 piece: 28" x 3 1/2" for the gusset.
2 pieces: 2" x 11" for each side of the zipper **** please check that the width is right according to the width of your zipper, see video.
2 pieces: 2" x 4" for the tabs at each end of the zipper
LINING FABRIC:
2 pieces: 8 1/2" x 11" for the body
1 piece: 7 1/4" x 11" for the front pocket
1 piece: 28" x 3 1/2" for the gusset.
2 pieces: 2" x 11" for each side of the zipper **** please check that the width is right according to the width of your zipper, see video.
FUSIBLE INTERFACING OR STABILIZER:
Enough for each piece of main fabric.
For the body I used fusible foam
For the front pocket I used fusible fleece because I wanted to quilt it.
For the piece above the pocket zipper I used firm interfacing, although not - necessary, I felt it would be easier to work with.
YOU WILL ALSO NEED:
2 zippers wider than 11"

I cannot wait to start this project. You give me hope that I can do this .I started with your other boxy bags and Learn so much .Thank you again
Yes, you can do this, it is all about learning techniques and how different materials work. Have fun with this. 😊😊😊
I am getting ready to start to sew on this project. It took me hours to cut out all of the pieces and get them ironed together. I need to make four bags in total. They were supposed to be ready before Christmas, but that didn't happen. LOL
It happens sometimes 😃. You have learned now how to work with this material. You can give them as birthday ptesents 😃
Merry Christmas.
I think I need to cut some new pieces. I didn't realize that the 2" x 11" pieces should have foam. I put stabilizer on them. I also did not put foam on the 28" long piece for the gusset. I also used stabilizer for that. @@MarcelasPurse Well at least I found out before I put it all together.
@@horsemomlisanc 😃 I made many mistakes when I first started sewing. The good thing is that it will not happen again.😄
thankyou for a great tutorial this will be my next project 😊
You are welcome 😊
Marcela thank you for these clear instructions. The fabric you used is so fun 🇨🇦
You are welcome, nice to have you from so far away. 😊
beautiful work!
Thank you 😊
Very nice this video!
Thank you 😊
@@MarcelasPurse With much pleasure, Marcela!
I have made four of these pouches now, and I am finding that the dimensions of the pieces are not quite right. I have to cut some off every time, especially on the front pieces. I am going to use different foam this time that is not quite so thick. Hopefully they will be easier to work with. The foam I used originally was about 1/4 inch. The new foam is 1/8. I also purchased a 1/4" foot, so I am finding that to be a lifesaver now. Here is a link to a video of the ones I made.

I just watched your video, lovely presents for your friends at work. 1/8 " should work better for you, sometimes fabric interfacings stretch the fabric a bit when fusing, also, the thicker they are the more difficult it is to sew them on the machine.
Happy sewing! 😊
