For 18 years, I've been driven by fear, and this relentless fear has had a profound impact on my self-esteem. It led me to constantly question and doubt my salvation, making me wonder if my efforts were enough to please the Lord. When I'd unintentionally fall asleep while reading the Bible or neglect to pray upon waking up, I'd be consumed by guilt. Watching passionate sermons by Paul Washer would sometimes intensify these feelings, as I compared myself to other Christians who seemed to have it all figured out. This constant comparison left me feeling inadequate on my Christian journey and fueled my self-doubt, making me fear that I wasn't producing enough fruit and that if I was not producing enough fruit, then I must be destined for hell and one day Jesus would say to me, "I never knew you, depart from me you worker of inequity". Watching a few of your videos on this topic has helped a lot. It's amazing how identifying the problem and giving it a name (pietism)can make one feel so liberated. It's like the scales are falling off my eyes and I can now see. So thank you and may God bless you guys and your ministry.

Jesus did all the work my dude, He told us to rest. :) it is finished. What Paul washer and people like him preach is called "lordship salvation" it is a false gospel message. We look to Jesus and what He did, His life, His works, His perfection to see if we're saved or not, not our own works. God bless. Look up "Onorato Diamante" it will bless you.

If you live long enough, those who give the appearance that they have it all together are usually the very ones that you cannot trust! " Confess your faults one to another that you may be healed." Be real with people! Those who appear to have it all together are NOT real! God showed me this years ago. Don't trust them! The truth is not in them!

Sounds like you grew up with religion like me, bad boys go to hell and good boys heaven. I never had a great home life either. I was the poorest, dumbest and always newest kid in school as we moved around 2-3 times a year. The way people treated me sent a message to me that I was defective and God made a mistake, so many issues out of this fear shaped my life horribly. The bottom line was inferiority and it makes perfectionism among many other horrible issues. I am glad you found truth.

There are so many preachers I have come across who will say "Saved by grace not by works" but then turn around and warn we may all be false converts and end up in hell. I cannot tell you how much I have struggled with feeling assured in my salvation and where I stand with God. Thank you for this reminder.

I would run away from any church that denies the free offer of the gospel, whereby God freely forgives sinners on account of Christ, not of your works, your transformation, your repentance, your faith or anything that is in you but solely for Christ’s sake God forgives sinners. And solely by believing it and looking to Christ can we get assurance, no man can get the slightest confidence by looking at his personal life that he is a Christian, the moment he does that he actually has fallen from grace.

      Literally my story!
Yknow, I was thinking of the story in Numbers 21... when the people got bitten by snakes, and God told Moses to lift a brass snake, and anyone who looked to that brass snake would be healed.
Jesus ties into that in John 3. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
      John 3:14‭-‬15
I imagine during that old testament story, there were some who taught lordship looking, and attacked Moses for "easy lookism"?
Imagine there were some who didn't feel healed, and had those intrusive thoughts and had to keep looking all day, go home and keep looking out the window at the snake, cuz if they stop looking, it shows they never looked at all?
People working hard to ensure they look right? Hoping they didn't blink or they were spiritually minded enough when they looked?
Just look! All that overthinking is pointless!
I also think of the thief on the cross... after Jesus gave him that promise, he was still hanging there for hours. Imagine what could have gone through his mind. Joy at first, but then looking at his circumstances... "did he really mean that"? "Can he really guarantee that for me"? "But look at all the bad things I did that got me here!"
Come on now. You know it

This video really brings it back to how simple it is, and that we shouldn't look to what we do or look to our faithfulness and obedience, but we should fix our gaze on the Son.

That is the key thing, Christ has completed our salvation, we merely receive his accomplished work by faith. This is as simple as it gets, yet I hardly ever hear it in Reformed theology, whether R C Sproul or John MacArthur, none of them will ever tell you that your salvation hinges on Christ’s death and resurrection (he died for your sins and rose for your justification), and not on anything that is worthy in you or your personal transformation, good works, or even your faith, full stop.

The entire message regarding fruit is totally misunderstood by the church today. Jesus is not referring to the fruits of the Spirit! He is referring to the tree of life and IT’S fruit of life, verse the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and IT’S fruit unto death. Jesus was telling us to know false teachers by the fruit they are handing you! What tree is it from! Is it rooted in Christ, the tree of life. Or is it rooted in the law, the tree of knowledge of good and evil that only produces dead hypocrites.

    • @henrka
      @henrka 8 місяців тому

@@robmarshall956 Really ? Look at R C Sproul videos on assurance. R C’s method to find our assurance is as follows. How do you know I am saved ? Because I am regenerate. How do you know I am regenerate ? Because I love God just a little bit. So my little love for God assures me of my salvation according to R C. Well if that is how you know you are saved you will be sorely disappointment at judgement day, God expects perfect love, not a little bit of love. We know we are saved because of Christ’s objective and infinite love for us in sending his Son to die on the cross, not our infinitesimal love for God as R C argues. Ligonier Ministries does not preach the unconditional love of God for sinners, but a conditional love where I must be regenerated to know that God loves me and I must look at my regeneration for assurance. I am sorry, R C does not get it, Christ came to save sinners of whom I am chief, and my salvation hinges solely on Christ’s unconditional love for me a sinner and not on my regeneration. Of course we must be born again, but we are born again when we believe that for the sake of Christ (not my regeneration) God freely forgives me as a sinner (;not a regenerate person). I do not look at my regeneration or transformation one iota to know that I am saved as R C suggests, but solely at tson of God who was for my transgressions. Ligonier Ministry is another false Ministry that directs sinners to look inside themselves to know they are saved, they direct sinners to the wrong place for assurance instead of sending them to the cross and Christ crucified where our salvation is. Because Calvinists teach a false limited atonement most Calvinists are incapable of preaching God’s grace to all sinners freely for the sake of Christ. C F W Walther nails it beautifully in his book Law and Gospel, and states beyond any doubt that the Reformed for the most part do not preach the gospel, they preach a conditional salvation where people must look at their works or their regeneration or their faith instead of Christ for assurance. The practical syllogism after all is a reformed doctrine, that directs Christian’s to look away from Christ for their salvation, and I am not aware of any reformed theologian that has repudiated the practical syllogism.

I disagree, I think Ligonier ministries does a wonderful job at making sure people know they are saved by Grace through faith. It seems to me that the problem you have is that, unlike Free Grace teachers, Ligonier teachers don't focus all of their weekly sermons on the topic of assurance, so you might have an impression that they "don't talk about it at all".
R.C. Sproul has been one of the most influential sources in my spiritual growth since he was very intentional in separating Grace and law *without* bifurcating faith and discipleship (like FGT does).
I do agree with you on John McArthur, but he is NOT Reformed, he is a dispensationalist (ironically like FGT teachers)

That is correct, the issue is whether you can rely on the fruit in your personal life for salvation and the answer is no. Nobody denies there is fruit, what we are saying is that it does not save you from the wrath of God, it is the consequence of having been saved but not the cause. It’s very simple. You must endure to the end in order to be saved(Matt.24:13). No one is saved “eternally” before they are dead. Now sometimes the scriptures use the word “saved” in the present tense but that is with respect to justification and as we learned from Romans 4, justification is never a static thing.
In Romans 4 where Paul talks about David he says that David was a man who was justified by his faith without doing works. When we go and look at the life of David, what we find is that David was a man of God LONG BEFORE he had committed the sin of adultery(with Bathsheba) and murder(Uriah the Hittite).
So if David is saying that he repented of his sin, and thereby was justified at that point in time, that means that he had been justified PRIOR to that and lost his justification. Now, because he's repented of his sins (murder and adultery), he has regained his justification. So that’s what’s being talked about in Romans 4. Therefore your lack of obedience is NOT a referendum on whether or not you were justified previously. It just means, on account of your grace sins, you’re unjustified *now*.

The dictionary definition of self-righteousness is “confidence in one’s own righteousness, especially when smugly moralistic and intolerant of the opinions and behavior of others.” Biblically speaking, self-righteousness, which is related to legalism, is the idea that we can somehow generate within ourselves a righteousness that will be acceptable to God (Romans 3:10). Although any serious Christian would recognize the error of this thought, because of our sin nature, it is a constant temptation to all of us to believe we are, or can be, righteous in and of ourselves. In the New Testament, Jesus and the apostle Paul came down particularly hard on those who attempted to live in self-righteousness.
Jesus’ condemnation of self-righteousness was especially harsh in His treatment of the Jewish leadership of the time. Six times in Matthew 23, Jesus condemns the scribes and Pharisees for rigidly adhering to their legalistic traditions in order to make themselves look better to others. The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector was specifically told by Jesus to “some who trusted in themselves, that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt” (Luke 18:9-14). The Pharisee assumed his acceptance with God based on his own actions, whereas the tax collector recognized that there was nothing in himself that would cause God to approve of him. Over and over again in the Gospels, Jesus clashes with the Pharisees and scribes about true righteousness. At the same time, He spends a great deal of time and energy warning His disciples about the dangers of self-righteousness, making it clear that, without Him, they could do nothing (John 15:5).
Paul’s treatment of self-righteousness is no less scathing than Jesus’ was. He began his great argument in Romans for the grace of God by condemning the Jews’ self-righteous trust in circumcision (Romans 2:17-24). He follows that up in chapter 10, saying that the Jews tried to gain acceptance with God based on their own righteousness, demonstrating ignorance of the true righteousness of God (Romans 10:3). His conclusion is that Christ is the end of the law for righteousness, not man (verse 4).
Paul’s letter to the Galatian church also addressed this issue. These believers were being told that they had to do certain things to be acceptable to God, specifically, to be circumcised. Paul goes so far as to say that this is another gospel and calls those who advocate it “accursed” (Galatians 1:8-9). More tellingly, he tells his readers that, if righteousness could come from their own actions, then Jesus died “for no purpose” (Galatians 2:21), and that righteousness could come “by the law” (Galatians 3:21). Paul’s conclusion about the Galatian believers was that they had been foolish in their attempt to be perfected by the flesh (Galatians 3:1-3).
It would be an understatement to say that every believer is plagued by this attitude. It is in our sin nature to try to do something to merit our salvation. The costly freedom of grace, bought for us by the blood of Jesus with no contribution from us, is difficult for our prideful hearts to understand or appreciate. It is far easier to compare ourselves with one another than it is to recognize that we cannot measure up to the standards of a holy God. However, in Christ we can know true righteousness. In Christ, we can know the forgiveness of sin that comes to us through grace. Because He stood in our place, we benefit from both His sinless life and His sin-bearing death (2 Corinthians 5:21). Because of His sacrifice, we can face our sin and bring it to the cross, rather than try somehow to be good enough for God. Only in the cross can we see the grace that covers all our sin and defeat the constant tendency toward self-righteousness in our hearts

@@dusttalking6871 When we accept Jesus as our Savior, God forgives all our sins: past, present, and future. Forgiveness comes as a total package; God does not forgive us partially but wholly.
The believer in Christ can say, “My future sins are forgiven” for these reasons:
      • When Jesus died, all of today’s sins were yet future. Jesus did not die only for the sins of people who lived before Him. He died for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2), including the sins of those who lived after Him.
      • If our future sins are not forgiven, then two things must happen: 1) when we sin in the future, we revert to an unforgiven state, meaning we lose our salvation and must be saved again, and 2) Christ must die again to cover the sins we’ve committed since His last death. Neither of these scenarios is biblical. We are kept by God, and thus our salvation is secure (John 10:28-30); and Christ died “once for all” (Hebrews 10:10; cf. Hebrews 7:25).
      • From the cross, Jesus said, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). No other sacrifice would ever be needed. Sin-all sin-had been atoned.
      • God’s purpose, which cannot be thwarted, is that His children be made perfect: “Those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified” (Romans 8:29-30). Note that all of God’s actions are in the past tense, as if they had already happened.
      • “We have been justified through faith” (Romans 5:1). When God justifies us, He declares us to be righteous. We still sin, but God’s declaration stands. The fact of our justification argues for the fact that our future sins are forgiven.
      • “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Nothing, not even our future sins, will condemn us. The verdict of “forgiven in Christ” has already been handed down from the divine bench.
      • “Neither the present nor the future, . . . nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39). The future cannot separate us from God’s love, even if there is sin in our future.
Of course, the fact that our future sins are forgiven in Christ should not make us flippant toward sin. No one can say, “My future sins are forgiven,” and then proceed to live a life of sin. Such an attitude is decidedly un-Christian: “What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” (Romans 6:1-2; see also 1 John 3:9).
The Bible teaches that, after salvation, we continue to sin (1 John 1:8; 2:1). We won’t reach sinless perfection this side of glory. The power of sin is broken, but, because we are still flawed humans living in a fallen world, we still at times give in to temptation. Our future sins, although ultimately forgiven in Christ, should still be confessed to God (1 John 1:9). Unconfessed sin, a sign of a disobedient, stubborn heart, will bring the Father’s discipline on His children (Hebrews 12:4-11).
When we sin, we don’t fear losing our salvation. At the same time, we understand that our sin does damage to our fellowship with the Heavenly Father and to our relationships with other people. We confess to God our future sins as we commit them for these reasons:
      • We seek to walk in the light, as He is in the light (1 John 1:7).
      • We strive for peace in the Body of Christ (James 4:1).
      • We do not want to grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30).
      • We want the joy of our salvation restored (Psalm 51:12).
      • We desire to “live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way” (Colossians 1:10).
      • Our testimony matters. We are called to good works that glorify the Father. Our light should shine, not be hidden under a bowl (Matthew 5:14-16).
      • We must “put to death . . . whatever belongs to [our] earthly nature” (Colossians 3:5). Confessing our sin to God is part of putting the old nature to death.
We are saved by grace through faith, and the moment we trust in Christ, we are made right with God. Our sins, including our future sins, were ultimately forgiven (Colossians 2:13), and our salvation is permanent

And he was frustrated that he had to keep bringing them back to the simple truths of the gospel, rather than being able to teach them more about God’s mysteries. This doesn’t mean that Christians don’t need to hear the gospel daily. Because the enemy is constantly at work trying to dismantle it from our hearts and minds. Yes, it is. But when you stop thinking of "salvation" as a state you are in, but rather as an ongoing process as the grace of God literally practically helps you transform into a reflection of His light, you no longer need to worry about this.
The notion of a "moment of salvation" is the stressful part here, not the notion of obedience. I'm so glad I am not a Protestant anymore, because I no longer have to worry about whether I "have salvation" or not. I can simply trust and strive to obey the Lord with His grace and the sacraments helping me do so. It is so much more satisfying. Not fearful, like my time in pietism was, nor bland and unsatisfying, as my time in Confessional Reformed theology was. Instead it is reassuring and comforting, but also challenging, like a good workout.

@@matilda95. Fear not brother, we have a God who is eager to forgive us if we ask for forgiveness and confess our sins.
Salvation is not something that happens to you in a single moment, so stop worrying about whether you "have salvation." Salvation is something that happens to you throughout your whole life as God sanctifies you.
God gave us sacraments that help us with our sanctification and make it easy. We are not meant to just put in a lot of really hard effort and make ourselves perfect that way.
The problem is that the Protestant church has lost all these sacraments or no longer understands their use. The Orthodox church, which is the original church of the Apostles, still has these sacraments. One such sacrament is confession, wherein we confess our sins to another person as James said to do. I can tell you from my personal experience that confession makes me feel so much better and helps me to resist temptation. It is a simple and practical help.
While confessional reformed people are well intentioned, they are ultimately approaching Christianity from a less-informed position and largely do not have full perspective on the things they teach about.
Stop worrying about whether you have this status known as "salvation." This concept was invented by the Protestant Reformers. Instead, just live obediently to God, and when you fail, ask forgiveness, and try to be better next time. It is quite simple.
I also cannot overstate how useful it is to have a spiritual father to guide you. As an Orthodox Christian, my spiritual father is like my doctor, who during confession can give me practical and ancient advice on how to fight the sins we all struggle with. No Protestant pastor can give you advice like this, that has been passed down for 2000 years.
The Protestant churches want you to just know on an intellectual level that you are saved, but the problem, as you are experiencing, is that our own thoughts are not always enough to allay our fears and anxieties. God knows and knew this, so He in His great wisdom did leave us with practical and visible means to SHOW us that what He said is true.
For example, look at John 20:23. God gave the Apostles the authority to forgive sins and to retain sins. Why? Because this is a great gift to us. God knew we needed to be told by someone else that our sins were forgiven. Our own imagination and intellect is not enough. (For more on this, I heavily recommend the video by Patristic Nectar Films "Ascension and the New Power of Priests to Forgive Sins.")
I was in your shoes not long ago brother, fearing that I might not be saved or that I might not be elect. The theocast response was to tell me "Dont worry! You are saved!" But that did not help, it is an empty guarantee. Only through Holy Orthodoxy was I able to achieve true peace.

Agree 💯 and it is funny that people think reformed theology embodies the doctrines of grace when most puritans looked at their own works to conclude if they had genuine faith, and their rules were so harsh that hardly anybody had assurance of salvation under puritan teaching. Geneva saw some of the most repressive measures by any government under John Calvin, the puritans pretty much criminalized the breaking of the Sabbath and chastised anybody that did not attend church, anybody that opposed religion or denied the divine origin of he Bible was jailed. Then you have Oliver Cromwell, who was described by Winston Churchill as a despot and dictator. Calvinism has a track record of legalism since its inception, yet the exponents of Calvinism claim ownership to the doctrines of grace, go figure.

The Reformers chief argument with the Roman Catholic Church was that our salvation was instantaneous, we are saved (justified) the moment we believe that for the sake of Christ God freely forgives our sins. Rome argued that salvation demanded good works, I.e. our sanctification contributed to our salvation. Although good works follow and sanctification is necessary, it is not necessary for salvation nor can it gives us assurance of salvation because our sanctification adds zero to our salvation and as such cannot be relied upon to conclude we are saved,. You obviously have taken the Roman Catholic side against the reformers. As Luther put it the righteousness that saves us is a passive righteousness that does not work but trusts in God who justifies the ungodly (Romans 4:5), the active righteousness (good works) follows but does not save. For Luther faith alone apart from works saves, for Rome faith working through love saves but not faith alone, that was the whole dispute during the Reformation and you have clearly taken the side of the pope by arguing that good works alongside faith are necessary for salvation, and faith alone does not save. Romans 3:28 (we are justified by faith apart from works). The NLT puts it beautifully in Romans 3:21 “But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago.” It is faith alone without works that justifies, because it rests on the perfect work of Christ which is the only work that can save a man, Christ’s perfect obedience, all the works of the Saints are like filthy rugs and cannot justify before God (Isaiah 64:6).

Grace is outside of us, it is God’s attitude towards us in which he looks on us with favour on account of Christ fulfilling all righteousness. Grace is not found within us, in our hearts or good works, but outside of us at Calvary and now in the risen Christ that gave himself for us and intercedes for us. The classic book “Mortification of Sin” by John Owen is one of the most pietistic books I have ever read, we are directed to pile guilt on any sinful habit we have instead of being directed towards the absolution (the gospel). Our sanctification depends on the remission of sins every bit as much as our justification, we are under grace and not under the law (Romans 6), We must die to the law before we can be married to .Christ (Romans 7), we are under no condemnation (Romans 8). I think too often people are told if you have believed in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins or if you will simply place your trust in Jesus Christ then you were saved and their is nothing else that you need to do and if they weren’t reborn by the power of the Holy Spirit they are often dissolution about why they are not feeling God in their life or still struggling with sin or they find themselves sinning and not really caring that much about it. This is because many professing christians have not really been converted and the difference between the true Christian and the non converted Christian is they both believe they are saved but the non converted christian has not received the Holy Spirit and the converted christian has. That’s because salvation is completely a work of God and many people are teaching that you can save yourself if you will just believe right now and this is not the case. Yes we are saved by grace through faith apart from works but believing in Jesus cannot be just that you won’t go to hell for your sins. Believing in Jesus is to know Him. Jesus said you will know the truth and the truth will set you free and many so called teachers of today are not teaching the gospel correctly. They are leaving out the fear of the Lord and sin and only talking about how much God loves them. Sin is the thing that has separated us from God and sin is the thing that unless we are set free by Jesus will send us to hell.

We are saved from the POWER of sin. We are saved from the WAGES of sin.
If Christ didn't pay for ALL of them, He didn't pay for any of them. It's an "all or nothing" covenant. But, YOU choose! If you insist that you must put in your two cents worth toward the payment that Christ made for you, you are insulting the grace of God. Christ's sacrifice is of no effect to you whatsoever. All or nothing!

I think I good passage and example of performance is in Matthew 7:21-22. These people performed well, but Jesus said He never knew them. Apparently if Jesus never knew them and He called workers of iniquity, they were not born again. The true gospel has been perverted by satan and we need to teach and defend it and get it out there for the lost and those who are false teachers to hopefully repent.

Define faith, and what the Bible means... to have faith. Even the demons believe and tremble. Faith implies, trust, love AND obedience. Just look to someone having faith in their marriage as an example. After all, that is what we are doing when we come to Christ. We are married to Him as the bridegroom. When we have FAITH in our marriage... we have trust, love AND obedience. If you are ignoring your wife, do you have faith in your marriage? If you are cheating on your wife, do you have faith in your marriage. There are LGBTQ people who proclaim a faith in Christ. Are they saved? There are supposed Christians who do OnlyFans. Are they saved, because they profess a nominal belief in Christ yet their actions show nothing of the sort?
A saving Faith, is one that works through love and obedience. It's not just professing Christ with your lips to be your savior, but being BORN AGAIN, as Jesus said to Nicodemus when asked what must we do to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

My thoughts exactly! The only thing that I would change is that faith itself is knowledge and trust, which will in turn result in obedience.
I also agree that professing Christians who do OF, are most likely false converts.

Yes but that obedience by the spirit comes after already being saved. Obedience and good works do not maintain your salvation nor save you. That’s what you need to distinguish. If you believe obedience contributes to your salvation, that is definitely not a good thing. The standard you must hit is perfection and that will never happen. The only obedience that saves us the obedience of Christ.

So, I’m curious. How do you know YOU’RE one of the really obedient ones that are worthy? And before you get all mad and indignant.. it’s an honest question. If you say you know you’re perfectly obedient, wow.. you’ve kept all 10 commandments your whole life? Good on you!! But if you didn’t obey even just once.. Whoah. You sinned… i.e…. You are toast, buddy. That said, how do you keep the law perfectly and be obedient. Asking for a friend.
