    EPISODE: 216
What does the Bible teach about obedience? Is our obedience something we do in order to justify ourselves? What do we learn from Abraham about his faithfulness to God? As we continue through the book of Romans, Paul is slowly revealing to us that our works of obedience do not make us righteous before God. In Romans 4, he unpacks this by explaining that it was Abraham’s faith in God and belief in His promises that justified him.
So, how does this look for us today? Since we are on the other side of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, we are looking back at all of the promises that God has fulfilled. But, this doesn’t change the fact that our faith in God and belief in His promises is also what justifies us. The difference for us is that we now know it is the righteousness of God in Christ that we can rest in as our justification.
In this episode of Real Christianity, pastor Dale Partridge walks us through the difference between obedience and legalism, as Paul explains in Romans 4:1-3 how our faith is counted to us as righteousness.

    Obedience is required for Salvation:
    1 Corinthians 7:19
"Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God is what matters."

He is the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him (Heb. 5:9). Obedience is necessary for salvation.

      1 John 3:23
And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.
... Obedience to God is to believe in his Son!❤

@@alpha_arlin I think there is more than one command than just believe.

Thanks for this session! I have been struggling a lot with obedience vs. legalism for about a year now because of some opinions I’ve heard. I’ve been wrestling through this still, but I do think I am obedient, not legalistic. So that is encouraging. The church we currently go to focuses too much on not being legalistic (many come from very legalistic backgrounds) I think, so my husband and I are trying to be wise in how we address this if needed…

There are many other verses in the Bible that require us to obey in order to achieve salvation.

If Abraham believed and did not go when he said go, would he still be considered faithful or righteous?

    John 14:15 NASB1995
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
    John 15:10 NASB1995
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
    Matthew 17:5 NASB1995
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!”
    1 Samuel 15:22 NASB1995
Samuel said, “Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the Lord ? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.
    Hebrews 10:26 NASB1995
For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
    Philippians 2:12 NASB1995
    So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling;
    Ezekiel 11:19‭-‬20 NASB1995
And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and do them. Then they will be My people, and I shall be their God.
All obedience is done and credited solely to the Holy Spirit who dwells in the temple of the regenerate believer of Jesus Christ. Jesus justifies us through faith alone; the Holy Spirit sanctifies us by helping us obey the commandments of God the Father and God the Son.

The works of God are to believe in him who he sent John 6:29. Jesus said this himself.

Salvation without obedience, hmmm? Faith Compells obedience, and without obedience can we say we really even believe? " Why do you say to me Lord, Lord, and do not the things I ask?" "You are my friends if you do whatsoever I ask you." I know salvation is by faith, but it is not faith without obedience. Sorry

The obedience of faith is not an obedience of DOING but an obedience that ceases to DO. That is, it is a departure from self reliance, and to instead rely on Jesus.

Can you give me an example of how you do that in your own life?
Otherwise, just seems like empty words.

there isn't faith over works only 2 equal partners , their two different creations only they are married , example for just a second realize there is only you no other humans there is you and there is God , God commands faith easy to do for God you tho know no other thing but God having to proof faith that is only done by works which is walking in the doing God says in the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses every thing will be establish works testifies of faith it is a holy cosmic union yes faith comes first so that works testifies of faith , inseparable . you learn God commands Faith in God so you have a challenge in that moment you have 2 directions you can go rejection or you can profess this may include or may not prayer up on reflection every action from the onset of the challenge is works also known as happenings professing faith is a works contemplating faith is a works , works is a definition is an action there is no faith over works or the opposite no works over faith . don't let the confusion of labor become the horizon of your goal

sorry dale in some cases your splitting hairs others your just wrong i dunno if your misrepresenting salvation or fallowing the herd your application of understanding is on unstable doctrine , there is a disjointedness Christ in a test of obedience committed to works went to john and summitted to baptism for salvation is it the only step no is it a step in Christ walk up the stairway to heaven yes Christ is our example so not thinking your saved with out baptism you really need a more holistic ; approch, understanding, style, belief, schooling, and/or testimony . i think you really don't understand faith and works. read below 👇
