Couldn’t agree with Bill’s take more. A simply told story, with the right technique, can yield dramatic results. Complexity doesn’t always come from a convoluted series of events unfolding, but a clear setup to an obstacle and a solution that an audience can track as logical (doesn’t have to be perfect logic, but grounded in the story/character’s actions). This is something Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul does so flawlessly. Is setting up a series of, seemingly, unsolvable problems for our main character(s) and then wraps them up in an unexpected, but satisfying way. Because the writers do the work and don’t cut corners. There’s a line to follow. I really have to get back to Barry. I only scratched the first season, but I’ve heard great things and I’m a HUGE fan of Bill’s.
lowkey barry isnt really for the mainstream section of breaking bad/better call saul fans. there's a bleakness and darkness to the world and black comedy that turns off the average viewer - like atlanta or louie. just like those two shows though, barry showcases the unique worldview of its genius creator
Way too few people watch films from the 30's and 40's these days, but I really wish they would. Writers, directors and actors working at the top of their craft. When I was a teenager in the 90's, I was obsessed with those two decades of cinema, even before I went into film school. And don't just watch American films from the period: watch the films that were being made in Germany and France and Russia. I love when Hader talks about it, as it may cause some younger people to discover the era and not be afraid of "old" movies.
To be fair, there have been many, many crappy movies for every decade since 1910, and very few truly great movies for each decade, too. I'm all for stimulating young people to watch old movies, but we gotta pick the best ones to show them first, or else they might give it up entirely.
This guy is going to be, without a doubt, one of the all-time great film makers and it's just what the industry needs, someone who understands the craft and isn't just going to crank out yet another superhero film. I can't wait for his first feature film.
Discussing the timeless nature of movies, in a film class I saw a Charlie Chaplin film that was made in 1918, at the time almost 100 years old. People, including myself, were still laughing out loud at the bits and jokes. Generations apart and it still worked. Blew me away.
I had a similar experience in junior high. My history teacher showed us The Kid and at first, most of us were just happy to get a break from taking notes. But soon, the entire class was fully engaged and laughing along.
Definitely. What Bill Hader said about good storytelling, good screenplay and good actors (...) is absolutely true and holds water, even - or better yet (what with all that cgi stuff nowadays) *especially now* - ... That's what makes The Godfather (just to name one) still one of the greatest trilogies of all times that have been banned on celluloid. You can cgi the living hell out a flick - if you lack these other components Bill mentioned, the result will always remain the same: Just some mediocre pablum...
Same! About to finish the 1st season and I can definitely see Bill Hader making a name for himself in production, especially after learning he wrote and directed the pilot, as well!
I watched this clip couple of months back when I hadn't seen Vertigo. Now I can fully appreciate this clip😂😂😂😂 The Jimmy Stewart running into the Nun killed me😂😂😂
I swear I could listen to him talk about an infinite amount of movies for an endless amount of time!!! I would love someday for them to talk about Key Largo (1948), such an incredible movie and so underrated
Any movie in black and white is a hit to me. When Hader was on SNL, the funniest parts of him was when he lost it laughing. I get to see his real talent here and he's funny as hell!
I remember when I first saw Back to The Future as a kid in the early 2000s, I was skeptical because it was "old" but by the end I was like "THEY MADE MORE OF THESE? PUT THEM ON!!"
Hader came to my apartment near the college we both went to. Instead of drinking, smoking and partying like everyone else, he wrote down 2 pages worth of movies I should watch.
I have the same feeling about old movies. Some of them are truly timeless. The Third Man is a movie I’ve seen a million times and it’s just so engaging every time. Like it just locks you in and I can’t even explain it.
I'm not sure whether this is a jab or not, but that's what she's there for. This podcast typically has comedians on, and a good laugher is a pretty easy way to make them feel comfortable.
I also love watching classic films. Theyre great and interesting for so many different reasons. And Bill is totally right. Just tell a good story. Find a good story and really lean into it! Audiences will respond, and remember.
The script is of course crucial, but-- and I could be mistaken-- I think by "story" that Bill intended that word to be shared with the visual storytelling as well, vis a vis the camera work.
@Jaerivus McTavern Yup, I know. Bill did talk about camera work. My comment is very much referring to that, along with all other aspects of great film.
Can you (or anyone) give me an example of a subjective camera move so I can understand it better? He used the example, "dolly shot," which I do understand. Is he literally just talking about movement, or is it about framing, or lighting/composition? And what makes a "move" subjective? Would the framing of the shot itself be informing us in a unique way?
@@jaerivus I best describe it in the way a camera move helps the viewer interpret subtextual meanings about the tone of a scene. Hence, a dolly shot helps evoke the feeling of physical distress/paranoia. Or how a Dutch angle creates visual tension between two people discussing. Possibly.
I love their conversation about old movies! When I was three, I saw Rear Window at the drive-in with my parent (who thought I'd sleep through it), but I was riveted the entire time. Something about Jimmy Stewart's cast and wheelchairs terrified me and left a few for the duration of my chlidhood.
I had the original idea for Barry, but mine was about a young boy who can talk to flowers and animals. The kid is shipwrecked on an enchanted island and befriends the local baby animals. The kid and his animal friends fight off a band of magical pirates who want to invade the island and raze the forest looking for lost ghost treasure. The boy and the animals use the magical pirate ship to sail to America, where he becomes a sniper for the Marines, and the rest from there on is really pretty similar. They're almost identical, some say.
Well IF they have to pick an agenda They mostly choose the right one It’s hard to make movies while catering to a bunch of people who want a dictator who claims he’s a Christian leader while paying porn stars for sex and racking up more felonies than 99% of the illegal immigrants he wants to keep out of the country Much easier to err on the side of caution and choose the side that (I know this will be hard to hear) tries to just care for everyone even if they are different than we are Tries to view things from another perspective rather than just going “oh my god look at that guy who wants to be a girl It will affect my life in no way but I hate it” Do you see how ridiculous that would be to try to cater to ? So I agree I wish they had no agenda but it’s easier said than done when one side already thinks that the “Jews run Hollywood” So they are already going to be viewed as having an agenda anyways And these days there is almost nothing redeeming about the Republican Party (You got guns, and you got this new Christianity that has nothing to do with the new testaments message of love and inclusion and on top of all of that is a paranoia so deep that many republicans seem to be openly supporting the possibility of a dictatorship being the answer I mean Donald Trump is a bottom of the barrel human being He talks like it and he has proven it by his actions And somehow someway he is still managing to find people who will vote for him It’s just really quite a wild scene. But you all seem to love that stuff So let’s just hope to God above that you never win another election until the party reverts back to its tough but fair roots. I mean it’s getting scary. You are scaring people and every country who ever had a dictator or has one now wishes they could go back to the time right before that election or decision that resulted in utterly destroying the voice of the people. Our government is far from perfect but electing felons is not going to help things. We mostly don’t allow felons to vote and that’s a Republican law honestly And all of a sudden out of desperation they want to allow a many many many times felon to be leader of the free world. It’s shocking how low people will go because their own leaders have created a completely false panic. And then to act surprised that he lost an election ? Are you all morons? The guy is completely and utterly moronic He says things on camera in front of America and then 4 hours later claims he did not say anything of the sort He’s not even in the ballpark of being fit to do any job quite honestly He’s a con man An arrested and convicted con man And for some reason people are just okay with their leader lying as long as he remains very very politically incorrect That’s the trade off at this point. He had 4 years He did nothing about immigration He got into office and realized he didn’t know what to do He just wanted the power Now he’s addicted to it But if you think for one second he actually cares about the people of the country You would be insane. He cares about his people.

Watching hilarious nerds expertly discuss entertainment without pretention (I'm looking at you, Quentin) and providing laughs along the way (a skill Quentin utterly lacks; it's difficult to think of a more unfunny person) is priceless. There is stuff that I put in front of my kids because it stuck with me for good reason. Quality is timeless. For crying out loud, my kids LOVE Buffy, even though the 90s references fly right past them. They are going on 14, which is scientifically recognized as the deepest canyon of cynicism, yet they will always crack a smile at, "That word, you keep using it..." and you all know the rest of the quote because your parents didn't suck, or because you're as old as Fred Savage. Gotta love seeing Jeopardy (the John Sturges directed Stanwyck picture mentioned at the end of clip by Hader around 9:00) on TCM not long after watching this. Frankly, you love to see it.

…my dad showed me Pink Floyd’s The Wall when I was 7. The shaving scene came on. I have never before nor since seen a man hit the fast forward button so fast. But I did appreciate it. …I don’t think it was worth all the recurring nightmares about Bob Geldof though.
Yeah, totally looking forward to movies directed by Bill Hader! He had to go through a long process to get there. Being a hilarious cast member on SNL, hilarious on talk shows and then finally directing Barry. Maybe don't fight the journey, but also lay out markers for where you want to go, and keep your ship pointed that way!
In the late 70’s early 80’s my father had a VHS tape entitled miscellaneous tutorials that had deep throat on it. He would punk unsuspecting friends telling them how it had great sales tips and it always made everyone laugh.
8:51 I too loved to sing KP songs when I was a child; about 7. Bill, you need to go through One of The Boys, Teenage Dream, and the first half of Prism and read the lyrics. Sona is just the best co-host for comedian guests on this show.
BIRDIE MOVIE - why does that kill me every time?!
Sona has graduated from the Jimmy Fallon school of Fakelaughery
Absolutely loved the last season of Barry
I really like your Podcast and the way you interview your guests. Much better than the TV show
"This house is strictly Cinema Verite! If i see one Dutch angle there will be a hell to pay!"
…my dad showed me Pink Floyd’s The Wall when I was 7. The shaving scene came on. I have never before nor since seen a man hit the fast forward button so fast.
But I did appreciate it. …I don’t think it was worth all the recurring nightmares about Bob Geldof though.
I was bummed out when Conan ended the TBS show...but I'm liking the podcast.
God, I just couldn’t love Hader any more. I love his explanation of sleepovers as a kid🤣
I believe in you... Love him more!
Reeeeeespecting Bill Hader Culture. 🎬📽🎞🎞🎞🎞
Yeah, totally looking forward to movies directed by Bill Hader! He had to go through a long process to get there. Being a hilarious cast member on SNL, hilarious on talk shows and then finally directing Barry. Maybe don't fight the journey, but also lay out markers for where you want to go, and keep your ship pointed that way!
as a lifelong fan of Rear Window, this makes me very happy
I hope Bill Hader directs feature films.
The great part of "Vertigo" is Jimmy's character following this woman who looks EXACTLY* like...
*with different hair color
He's, The Bill Hader Of Our Times.
In the late 70’s early 80’s my father had a VHS tape entitled miscellaneous tutorials that had deep throat on it. He would punk unsuspecting friends telling them how it had great sales tips and it always made everyone laugh.
"The peak a boo mooovie" will always make me lmao
Bill teasing Conan at 6:53 has me dying
PFFFTTT That Hitchcock gag about the 'dizzy movie' totally goes longer but edited down lmao I can totally feel that
Are the full video versions of the podcasts available?
Rear window was the very first Alfred Hitchcock movie I ever saw and I was 12 years old, I fell instantly in love with old films after that.
8:51 I too loved to sing KP songs when I was a child; about 7. Bill, you need to go through One of The Boys, Teenage Dream, and the first half of Prism and read the lyrics. Not stuff for little girls to be singing trust me. One of my favs was hummingbird heartbeat. If you read those lyrics....................GL is all I have to say.
1:15-1:45 was gold 😂😂
“Ah, kinda landed in the same spot…”
Bill is a cool dad, he allows subjective camera move at sleepovers
