We tried this grid today for our horses' first time ever jumping a real grid. It took them a little while to figure themselves out and where to put their feet, especially for the bounce, but, at the end, their technique in addition to their confidence was improved by a lot! Thanks so much for all of your helpful videos; so many horses have been changed for the better with these great ideas and schooling methods!
These videos are awesome - I recently came across them and I am so happy that students (mine included) can go on you tube to study without having to open (or purchase) the books I usually recommend. This is a much better way to study, it's way more in depth than most of the books I have found so I love them - I am a show jumper/trainer and I love what you are doing here. What a great way to teach - I love it!
These videos are such a great help, I'm just about to start jumping with my loan who hasn't jumped in a few years, should be interesting! Keep up the good work, these videos are fun, professional and informative.
I tried this today. Let's just say I ate a lot of sand ;D totally my fault, next time I'll start with the last jump as just a pole on the ground. Great exercise though, I love you guys!
Eventionerds. That's what I would call people who watch these religiously and spend nearly every moment of their free time (that they don't spend riding/at the barn) watching these videos, listening to Boyd Martin/Dom Schramm/Michael Pollard podcasts, and reading blogs. Not that I do that or anything...;) Great video! Keep 'em coming!
Haha, this helped ALOT, got my green ish (new to jumping) horse really thinking and upswing his muscle! We raised the bounce to two feet and the last vertical to 3 feet! He engaged it and kinda taught him not to rush (because of the trot poles he couldn't rush in at a canter) thanks! Keep going!!
I love this video. Sooo helpful. Great how you give different ways of measuring the pole/fence distance and you make it accessible to people with...' less sophisticated ' equipment. Start was a bit weird though :)
Simply fantasmical! Mudpie and I definitely need to work on gymnastics, but I never had a clear plan of how to set up a nice, effective gymnastic. Thanks, guys! :D The Mudpie and I will totally try this next week! :D
Hahah I just love these videos! When you were saying how the distance should be about 4 of your feet, or one large step I was thinking to myself, "Well now I'm just going to have to add another step in there for my Clydesdale" And then it was like you were reading my mind, you said "Now obviously a shetland pony or a Clydesdale will have different strides" LOL
:D As a side note, do you have any tips or exercises to help make lower legs stronger and more secure? Mudpie fractured his splint bone, and over the six months that he was off, I didn't ride and lost all the security I'd ever had in my lower leg. (see latest video for failish preview ;D) I ride every day, and have a lesson at least once a week, but is there any sort of exercise that I could do on my own to help it return faster? You guys are pretty much the coolest EVER, sooo :3
enjoyed the programme, but can you please advise people when they buy the barrels to buy plastic ones. A friend was using the old metal barrels and her horse slipped and put his leg through the metal barrel which ended up with him having to be put down. These accidents don't often happen but they can. Can you also advise people to NEVER use three poles on the ground, because this can encourage the horse to jump all three at once.

Barbara Dyson Thankyou for this I read this comment a couple of months ago and it's always in my mind. It's definitely stopped me doing some dangerous things 😉 so thanks !
Barbara Dyson Actually plastics barrels are a very bad idea too. As they are made of hard plastic, when it happens that they break, the ends get sharp. A horse making a mistake, breaking a plastic barrel could injure himself severely. So I'd say always use wood barrels.
I struggle to get enough impulsion in my boys canter when jumping. He sort of just tales it as it comes. When i push him through a 4-5 stride comibination he takes the second jump either too close or too long. How can i get my horse to get up and go? He also has a monster big canter for a thoroughbred lol i am still learning the way he works but have a showjumping comp coming up and wants to have a chance in the ribbons
Tried to do a one stride distance like that with my OTTB and he found a way to run out. Build this up bit by bit introducing each element individually. I wish I would have done that instead.
BENDING!!!! It helps a horse become fexible to the riders hands. My horse was very stiff and hated giving to the bit but after working with her bending shes much more softer
hi there since u have horses and u have had them longer than me (I have only had one horse)could u give me a tip my horse keeps rearing and bucking its became so bad that I cant get on him in less I feed him a treat when he does it he swishes his tail or stomps him feet and pretty much says no I don't want to do this or work? I have tried lunging but he kicked me today when I tried he just doesn't want to work I don't want to let him go?? also if u have any bonding exercises u could tell me , I don't think we have a good bond he keeps takin the micky? please help?
No one is achieving anything from the sounds of it, you're also quite inexperienced if it's your first horse, you have to think What's best for him, either get him professionally schooled or sell him as a project (be honest in his advert or you'll get a bad reputation) and buy something more suited to you. Never get on a horse unless you know you'll win the battle otherwise you'll create a problem horse. Sorry to be the one to say it but there's no point sugar coating it. It's What's best for the horse not what makes you happy
ThatCrazyHorseGirl well actually I trained him myself I can now hack out alone as well but he is a lot better in a school but no going to go into loads of detail about this?
I ride a pony that Is very cheeky so she would probably stop at most of this even a smaller vertical how could I stop her from being so cheeky around this kind of things?? especially bigger jumps
Sophie Emily I'm not a pro or anything, all I have right now is to just encourage him or her and good luck. My barn took in a horse that has never jumped before. My instructor chose me to train him and it was a very good opportunity to learn. After discipline and encouragement, he jumped beautifully.
K but the Evention TV intro remains the most legendary UA-cam intro/music video ever. And then there's the AC/DC background music... Such good taste.
In the beginning of the intro I was like are my earbuds not working
Same😂😋
Boy in a Beanie sameeee😂
Callum same I turned up my volume like 4 times

By far my most favorite video on UA-cam :)
The Budget Equestrian "Meant to Live" by Switchfoot

I literally love your intro so much!!
Damn for a video from 10 years ago this quality is AWESOMEEE!!
These videos are amazing well done your very helpful thanks you really helped me and my horse Flash
Thanks so much! I'm really excited to try this out(:
Great video! Awesome song choices!!
Can you please advise what the distance is from the last trot pole to the first X rail? I'm guessing it's 6ft, but would like confirmation?
It will be the same as the distance between the pops as horses will need the same distance to take off and land after the poles
we did this gymnastic grid! i love it sooo much! it is soo fun to do!
I thought that I was imagining that Back in Black song, lol.
Same xD
what is the distance between the 4th pole and the first xrail ?
Did you ever get an answer? I'm thinking it's 6ft, but would really like to know what Dom says.
I was going to ask the same question.
I miss you guys!!!!!
Dom: *Looks at poles* "Perfect"
Me: *Looks at Dom* "Yes you are"
Can you do a video on how to start to train your young horse to jump please?
Simply fantasmical! Mudpie and I definitely need to work on gymnastics, but I never had a clear plan of how to set up a nice, effective gymnastic. Thanks, guys! :D The Mudpie and I will totally try this next week! :D
Omg horses and acdc in 1 video XD can’t wait to try this. Thanks for the video
Awesome, hope this simple exercise is helpful or at least a starting point. Thanks
I wish they still made these videos.
Wow! This vdo is very useful for us, thanks a lot!
I LOVE THESE VIDEOS ! thank you for them!
I love you guys its nicely explained and your videos are always very helpful 😊 love the song you chose from switchfoot
You are the most amazing rider ever !!

Very use full
Hay eve ntchon tv I love your epsods
I should try this woth my horse x
"You're an idiot! Go put on some spandex" haha you two are so cute.
@sailorpony12 I second that! I am starting back from a bit of a break myself. Need to strengthen my legs up for next show season.
I love your channel!!! Your horse is so cute!!! What breed is he? Would the measurements be the same for pony?
:D As a side note, do you have any tips or exercises to help make lower legs stronger and more secure? These are such helpful videos, also anyone have any idea on how many steps would trot poles be for my 19 hand

Barbara Dyson you can't use three trot poles? I only have 4
you can.
Until you develop your ey using a tape measure is the safest thing to do in time you will see the stride as you ride the course
your horse is sou cute
There such a cute couple
Ac Dc in the back made me love this video
Often the trot poles when your horse was going into the bounce, he wasn't on the right lead for the canter. He fixed it after he got to the bertical
Can you use poles with Tennessee Walking Horses? I have tried to use them before but because she paces its weird. o_O
Perfect! :)
At 0:57 one of the bricks looks like a horse head from the nose to the cheekbone!
It does😃!!
2018 anyone???
Morgan Fautt ayyyyy
Love this video for reference 😁
They are on the road a lot. I met Don this past summer at a clinic and he still still his cheeky self.
Morgan Fautt I’ve done better. 2019
@@firemansamstan7340 I've done even better. *2020*
Fine-looking horse! Yes, 2018
Yes, you would want the 2 large steps, or the 6 feet... :)
how much space between the wood thing on the ground (dunno how it is in english) and the first X obstacle?
usually 9 feet which is 3 human steps!
thanks Nicola!
it's called bar :)
Are You Watching This Alone? No, a pole
Are You Watching This Alone?
Its a pole not a bar
Where did these people go??

could u ask a question well I have a new horse that is only broken a month so how could i get it to jump Better hopefully I can answer it
when i do my gymnastics with my mare, im told to stayin my two point over the small cross rails.
My horse gets excited and that sparks my nerves. Any tips to overcome it?
sing... sing to your horses. it is soothing to your horse and singing will calm your nerves also. I song Everytime I go on a trail ride alone.
Tried to do a one stride distance like that with my OTTB and he found a way to run out. Build this up bit by bit introducing each element individually. I wish I would have done that instead.
Hey! Would it be possible for me to do the poles and the bounce part of this exercise trotting in-hand?
it's so much easier to understand distance in meters, 3 big human steps=3 meters ;) But i guess it's different for people who learned this way :)
Australia...
How far from the last trot pole to the first cross pole jump?
I want to know that!
Same here! Dom forgot that bit. From experience, I think it will be 6ft (2 steps)... But id still like confirmation lol
My horse is in field isolation atm but we can ride in that field. We aren't aloud poles or anything so does anyone know any exercises I can do?
BENDING!!!! It helps a horse become fexible to the riders hands. My horse was very stiff and hated giving to the bit but after working with her bending shes much more softer
Are you using pixio camera?
UGHH I'm trying to remember what song your intro music is from??
Could you please use metric units too? I’m from nz and I have no idea how long three feet is lol
A metre is 3'3
would those measurements work for a 14.0hh pony?
I miss evention TV like where tf did they go
Mia Treadwell for real :(
😂😂 I love you
BAAACK IN BLLAAAAACK
Yes they would, my horse is 14.2 and this works for him,
and stop saying your horse is a pony! xD
ok, that's good to know.
and I don't get the last part
My horse is so flexable she somehow managed to canter the poles and the cat-leap the jumps!!!! And somehow i stayed on!
how many centimetres long is a feet?thanks guys:-)
Are the distances smaller for a 13hh pony?
+Bekah Richens Depends on the pony's stride size.
hi there since u have horses and u have had them longer than me (I have only had one horse)could u give me a tip my horse keeps rearing and bucking its became so bad that I cant get on him in less I feed him a treat when he does it he swishes his tail or stomps him feet and pretty much says no I don't want to do this or work?

dalfirephoenix foxtrot Maybe get a vet out? It might be that he is in some kind of pain when ridden (saddle doesn't fit any more, sore back etc) x
Issie Long no he is just being push I have had people out before
Oh okay, just an idea! Not sure what you can do now :/ I know when my horse was a bit like that it was red worm, so worming him sorted it out xx
I was really excited to try this, but then I realised I've all ready down this at pony club...
30.48 centimeters are in 1 foot :) Unless your asking how many centimeters long an actual average human foot is :P
Thank-you for making this. Good job, but ya could leave out the music....
Back In Black by Ac Dc..... No, we shall not get rid of that my friend.
+WolfMoon I see. Ok then. Not everyone likes it ok.
that's me haha:)
what music in this video?
My horse can't jump, he has bone spurs in his front feet. What other exercise can I do???
No it will hurt him but jump him
Lung him or make him walk or trot over pole don't make him do jumps tho.
How many human footsteps for the 1 stride?
+Amy F normally normally 4 c:
I ride a pony that Is very cheeky so she would probably stop at most of this even a smaller vertical how could I stop her from being so cheeky around this kind of things?? especially bigger jumps
Thumbs up for 2018 watchers
PLZ someone help me.im teaching my horse jump but instead of jumping she just steps over everything
I just got a horse and I'm schooling it to jump does everyone have any tips

Looks like a professional video, but that music is awful.
I really wish you would get your hands out of your lap
That’s not gymnastics 🤸♂️ stop calling it that
