Couldn't agree more and even beyond the color pallet and rose motif they used.. Early on she is sitting at the table with her parents. The back of the chair shows behind her shoulders just enough to look like wing "buds". Then later on her headboard gives her full-on angel "wings" and even a crown as she sits in front of it. The back of her mother's settee as Madison gives her the video also has the wing vibe but is in a much lower position the perfect "mirror" the low point in her avenging angel life. There is another scene of her in the coffee shop in front of the medallion on the wall that gives her a halo effect.
The muriel in the doctor's office was a set up to her ultimate demise as the scene mirrors her cremation.
The movie is just chocked full of delightful things.

I like the small details like the one where they were walking home at night after the first date and they pass this girl who looks so scared walking the opposite way and the part where Maddison said "you'll get there" when Cassie said she doesn't have any kid yet. Like those small details of what women actually deal with irl, scared to go home at night alone and people assuming women want to have kids or marry. Its incredibly realistic specially in the end, it's made me felt like a bit more real just because it doesn't feel like one of those female revenge films who end in a heroine moment that she won. Here she did somehow won but she dead so.

I think Mulligan is very likely, and Screenplay is definitely a possibility but will depend on how beloved Judas and the Black Messiah will end up being since I think Chicago 7, Mank, Soul, and Minari have the other 4 spots locked up. If Mank gets a screenplay nom over Promising Yong woman I'll be annoyed. Not at all surprised but it would kind of suck. It was one lf those movies that has a great story to tell, great actors in it, about Hollywood history so Hollywood will like it out of nostalgia, but it just didn't come together well and I think a lot of that is on the screenplay. Or that's what is seemed like to me. I hope Mank gets maybe some actor noms, hair and makeup maybe, but NOT screenplay or director.

I think the point of the ending is that murder is taken a lot more seriously than sexual violence in the justice system. Cassy's character was so driven to get these people punished, she was willing to die for it.

I think the fact that the last Carrie scene lasts so long. You sit there waiting for him to stop, waiting for him to change his mind because he has all that time to do so. Then for them to convince themselves it was an accident, that it couldn't have been really his fault. I feel like it mirrors the sexual assault, it takes time and he could have stopped but he didn't. Then he convinced himself that it wasn't his fault.
I think it creates a situation where the audience has that rage and the questions of why didn't he just stop, just like victims often feel.

Very nice review guys. I rarely award a movie a 10/10 and if I do it doesn't usually happen on first viewing. But this one just ticked all of my boxes and I couldn't not give it a perfect rating. As of right now it's easily my favorite of the year and honestly I doubt that changes. I was so nervous about the ending knowing how it has people split but I'm happy to say I didn't have a problem with it. I thought it was great. Certainly helps make this movie unforgettable. It has been a week since I've seen it and I can't get it out of my head. Can't wait to see it again. Every awards season there's a movie I root for and that I'll be gutted if it's snubbed. This year it's this one. Carey has given many great performances but this is my favorite. I don't see her getting snubbed. I actually think the front-runners are her and Viola. But if for some reason she is snubbed I will be gutted. I just don't see how there's any denying her performance. I think her and Screenplay are basically guaranteed. But I would love to see many more. Picture is certainly possible. Would be ecstatic if it could get in there and Director. Basically I hope it gets in everywhere. Would love to see Editing and Costume too. Anyway, movie of the year. It's a necessary film but doesn't feel preachy and is actually very entertaining. It's mainly just the gut punch towards the end that isn't so fun to watch. But I'm on board with it. Thankfully the very ending was applause-worthy and left me with a smile on my face.

I really liked your review. But, I need feedback on my thoughts about this movie. If the creators of this UA-cam page don’t want this level of discussion in their comments, my apologies. Can anyone recommend a better place for me to take my questions, either youtubers or websites to discuss movies at depth? If so, please share it. Due to the pandemic, I can’t watch the movies with people and actually discuss it.
Anyway, I’ve been watching reviews and reading comments. It seems like some men feel like this is a feminist male hating movie. I had much more in-depth perspectives and would like some feedback. I feel like this movie is very much a Rorschach test. Perhaps men who hate this movie, maybe recognize themselves or people they know in the male characters? That being said, maybe my interpretation says more about me than the movie. But here we go .... SPOILERS BELOW ....
I didn’t get the vibe that this is a man hating movie. One of Cassie’s closest relationships is with her father who is portrayed as a genuinely nice man. He’s a gentleman. He’s kind, loving, and supportive. I feel that because of her father, Cassie knows that there are good men out there. But those good men, aren’t the focus of her vengeance. She’s focused on the people (both men & women) who allow date rape to continue by not wanting to get involved. The people who ignore a situation like this rather than intervening and stopping it, or reporting it and backing up the victim if he/she chooses to press charges.
I felt that in Ryan she thought she’d actually found a nice man. Someone she felt comfortable introducing to her father. To me, this implied that she felt that Ryan was was on the same level (as respectful and as kind a man) as her father. At this point in the film, Cassie has finely started the long process of healing her heart and soul with Ryan’s help.
Then when Cassie sees the video and realizes that Ryan was there, and didn’t intervene nor did he report it, her heart is just completely pulverized. I feel at this point she’s done. She is at her lowest point. From her perspective, her family are disappointed in her again for the fact that things didn’t work out with Ryan. She’s now crushed and more depressed than she’s ever been, but at the same time - she’s empowered by the video. The video provides her with the tool she needs to continue on - while her mind is fueled only by sadness, disappointment, hopelessness, rage, and revenge.
I feel like she very likely knew and was prepared to sacrifice herself in order to ruin the rapist’s life, as well as everyone associated with that night - who didn’t come forward and support Nina.
I wondered while watching the movie if she knew one of the handcuffs was faulty. If she was consciously prepared to suicide by, “nice guy.”
Now - This is where I am curious about the meaning of the different colored pens she used in her journal - red and blue. We only saw her in situations where she used a blue pen in her journal. Was the red pen meant to indicate situations in which she actually physically hurt the men she went home with? We only saw her hurting people with psychological attacks, but it was never made clear if she had ever hurt someone physically, for example when she was with the guy with the fedora she referenced, “a woman who uses scissors,” on men who take advantage of what they perceive as drunk women in bars. Was she bluffing, telling the truth, or was Cassie the woman with the scissors, whom she references?
Now back to the bachelor party - before she takes out the scalpel she was careful to wear gloves the entire time she was in the cabin. Once it became clear that Al wasn’t going to redeem himself, she makes the decision to die for her cause. She actually REMOVES her gloves before picking up the scalpel. She’s no longer concerned about finger prints because she’s not getting out of this alive. When she sits on Al with a scalpel and seemingly prepares to start carving Nina’s name into him, I didn’t feel like she was really going to do it. As with all her other victims, she thoroughly convinced Al that she was about to do him grievous harm. To the point that he freaked out and was able to break the (intentionally?) faulty handcuff and attack her. It seems like she was prepared and wore gloves, in the event that things went differently (as they did with the lawyer), but once it was clear Al wouldn’t likely redeem himself, she set up a situation where he could and likely would hurt her or kill her. By removing the gloves she also knew she’d be able to scratch him and ensure his DNA was under her fingernails. That way, it would be easier to identify him as her killer. (She obviously had no way of knowing they’d burn her body.)
In her mental state, it seems that she was ready to die for her cause. By putting her necklace in the cash register for her friend, Cassie showed that she knew she likely wouldn’t be back. By sacrificing her life, she knew the rest of her plan would play out (via timed messages and the video being sent to the lawyer), and thoroughly destroy every one who had hurt Nina both directly and indirectly by not coming forward or taking the allegations seriously.
So that was my take on this amazing movie. Anyone else have any thoughts?
Specifically, what are your thoughts regarding the red and blue marks & names in her journal & the timing and reason for removing her gloves before she was supposedly about to cut into someone with a scalpel?

    • @notordinarynothing
      @notordinarynothing 3 роки тому +2

Ehi thanks for this comment, I hadn't thought about her removing her gloves. Other than that I agree with you and think that the movie was about specific persons rather than a man-hating picture. Because of everything you said and because of the role she gave to the lawyer.(I'm being vague in order not to spoil) I wondered about the different pens as well but I thought she used the red one after the second guy (the coke guy), so I thought that was the lighter version.
I agree with everything else you said and find your interpretation very convincing.

    • @lpphillyfan
      @lpphillyfan 3 роки тому

I 100% agree with you that the movie's not saying all men are bad. It's target is our culture/society and I feel Fennell's intention was to have all of us (men and women) look inward on whether we have contributed or still are contributing to this rape culture, whether directly or by not acting to stop or call out something when we could have.
In terms of the pens, it's hard to say for sure. I rewatched the scenes with the notebook and she marks black for Adam Brody and blue for McLovin. She specifically points out to McLovin that he didn't make a move while she's passed out, so maybe blue is for the guys who drew the line there. She seemed a little more drunk with Adam Brody when he threw himself on top of her and then started to go down on her, so maybe that's what black is for? That's the color I'm most unsure about. Red could be guys who tried to get violent with her once she revealed she was sober? It'd be hard to believe if none of the guys did.

I got the feeling the removal of the gloves is because she wanted the carving to be personal. Nothing was more personal than this for her, the sterility of the glove might have removed that for her. But, while I think she was prepared to die, I don't think she wanted to. If you listen to the director talk about this scene she said it was important to her that as soon as Cassie switch from psychological to physical torture, as soon as she brought a weapon into it, that the fact that she isn't physically strong or trained to defend herself had to come into play. As soon as she went physical it was clear she was just outmatched and unprepared. A fact that I think for Cassie was hidden because of her grief and rage and the false sense of bravado she gained while accumulating her tally marks.

I liked this movie a lot and Carey Mulligan's performance was amazing but one thing I didn't like, was how her character (Cassie) weaponized sexual assault to prove a point- like, making her friend think she was sexually assaulted as a punishment, despite knowing how devastating the effects of SA are. I know Cassie is meant to be a morally ambiguous character, but I really disliked that part of the movie. I actually found myself disliking Cassie as a character because of it (to me at least) it cheapened her entire story and what she is going through. That's just me though.

The aesthetic and score are directly influenced by 1950s Hitchcock thrillers like Rear Window, Vertigo and Psycho. It reminds people of Get Out BECAUSE Get Out modernised and adapted Hitchcock’s style to create a coherent aesthetic for genre bending. Come on guys, a little film literacy please.

I give it a 9/10. I liked it but I'm not gushing about it. I do see why people are, though. My only concern is that ending. I agree, everything worked well for me except the ending and perhaps how realistically a woman would put herself out there like that in the spirit of vengeance, without it catching up to her a lot sooner. 🤔
Oscar chances...I would like to see her or Andra Day win it. Those two are the best female performances this year! It has its best shot in Screenplay.

Director wanted to end the movie after the “fire” which would’ve been brutal and turned this into an instant classic that will be talked about in years to come. Sadly financiers intervened and had to staple on the final revenge scene. It would have been a huge gamble but would have been far more powerful and actually realistic. People have the idea all murderers are caught but just like rape a lot get away with it. A must see movie that falls short of true classic quality.

Re: the ending - It needs to happen because it's a reflection of what happens irl. It might be too much, like the dagger has already been thrusted, but pushing it deeper was necessary.
But if we were talking about the last few minutes, I kinda agree. It sort of diluted the effect of the dagger push.
(Lmao commenting without spoilers is hard)

If Promising Young Woman wins the Golden Globe for comedy/musical picture, it could have a real chance for another Oscar nomination, other than Carey Mulligan hopefully. Excited to see what happens this award season.

It's really interesting to see people's thoughts on PYW because I wasn't the biggest fan (which is disappointing bc I expected a lot being such a big Killing Eve fan). I did LOVE the ending though and thought it was a brilliant way to tie it all together.

The ending undoes everything for me. It feels tacked on. Instead of staying true to Cassie's character it decided to make a bigger statement about privilege/patriarchy that movies like "The Assistant" already are doing.
