The U.S has become a bewildering place of contradictions; too much consumption, with too little production, too little happiness or fulfillment, despite all the cmorts, 40 years of factories shutting down, PE Firms and Hedge Funds owning everything, and Amazon, Big Tech and Wal Mart turning millions into wage slaves while putting mom- n- pops out of business by the millions.
Fires, floods, droughts, massive heat, acidic oceans....yet we keep buying 10mpg SUVs and Pickups by the millions.....and denying their devastating effects, no one really says much about the root causes, certainly not mainstream media.
I send emails, voicemails to state officials and lawmakers, I attend rallies, argue with friends, occasionally demonstrate and volunteer; but these efforts fall on deaf ears. What to do!

As I'm sitting here watching this here in South Africa, we don't have electricity because we have had rolling blackouts for years now. I think it is a kind of "blindness" that happens when generation after generation experiences what good you're talking about. They end up taking it for granted. Most of us never see the rest of the world (in part due to high living costs that make it challenging to save money and travel.) But really, I think it is a lack of desire to understand. They don't reach out and a lot of them don't try to see beyond their own experience. I've never traveled overseas -or crossed any border but I loved to learn about other cultures and countries as a kid. I married a military man in my early twenties and I learned a lot from him when he came home from deployments. They have to want to "see" and I think a lot of people don't want to. If I could be rid of anything in this world it would be willful ignorance. One very beautiful thing we have is the possibility or chance to make changes if we really want them, to find ways ---because there are ways to reach for what we want. I came from living in poverty and now I live in what is called "middle class." I have work, a home, a small family and it takes all of us but we are good. I look back and know that it was because my mother sacrificed a lot and I kept going. I hope that somehow, every person in this world can find some happiness without people trying to destroy them along the way. A lot of people are blind because they choose to be and because it bothers them too much to look and see the truth.

I came to America in 1984 from the Philippines to promise to protect, defend and die for it-- to join the Navy! Politics then seemed to be no different than now plus there was still a threat WW 3 could happen. But I never once contemplated on leaving this country that did so much for me for what little I offered to serve it because of politics. Last time I visited my country of birth was 23 years ago. I left the US in 2006 after serving in the military for 9 years, decided to stay in Italy rather than coming back to the US. Haven't regretted a single second of it and I am reminded of why I did so every time I come back to visit. I am not an expat, I am an immigrant. I emigrated from the US to Italy because I simply couldn't live in that society anymore. I am of modest means, and it would still take high 6 figures to get me to live back in the US, and even then it would only be temporary. I have a better quality of life here as a resident alien than I would as a combat veteran in my own country. I would not recommend Italy to people wanting to leave the US unless they feel it in their bones as their new home like I did. It has to speak to you. There are easier places to emigrate to in the world than Italy, it's just that Italy immediately felt like home when I arrived.
The proclivities and priorities of the American people are just so different from my own. People are so quick to blame the politicians they elect in the system that they continue to support without doing any self-reflection so as to change the direction they're going in. I get it, they're two different countries, and Bill was correct when he said you're just trading things you don't like about the US for things you won't like about the new country you will be living in. But there's one big...no...ENORMOUS caveat: the things that I dislike about living here pale in comparison to the things I dislike about living in the US, and no amount of money or lifestyle perks would fix it. The American people don't want to hear it, but the government is not to blame: the people are. The fact that people are divided over having a functioning social system is all the proof you need, and until they aren't divided, nothing will ever change because the politicians will court the constituents they feel will help them get re-elected and continue to poison the well.
It's not just that I prefer one place over the other, it's that living in the US comes with so many non-starters that it's not even a consideration anymore, especially with a family. However, if you want to leave the US just because you want to put different desktop wallpaper on your life, then you should stay right where you are. Emigrating from the US would be a bad decision for you. However, if you feel that you are at odds with just about everything, it could be a viable option, but don't think you're going to find a utopia.

There is a severe lack of perspective in the modern west which stems from a very selective view of history and present realities. It infects people on both sides of the political spectrum and pushes perceptions further and further from reality resulting too often in either impotent anger or hopeless apathy. Thanks for a this small dose of a humorous reminder here-- it's more important than it seems in the current ideological climate.

Of course there are no perfect places, but people are free to express dislike of the place they currently live. Plus, there are plenty of people who have lived in one area and hated it and moved and love it. So while there are no perfect places, I think it's fair to say that some place might be the perfect place for oneself.
I don't agree that any place is what you make of it. My mother comes from West Virginia and it was poor when she left. It is only poorer still today. She moved to the Bronx in the 60's, met my father, bought a 2 family house in the burbs. She moved out of poverty into the middle class in one of the toniest areas of the country. Some areas do not provide the same access to opportunities as others.
The rise of right wing fascism should be of deep concern to everyone. Despite Maher saying no one actually leaves, I know 2 very well educated people who moved to England for that reason. I used to love Maher and watched him for 20 some odd years, but now he's bitter, out of touch, and it is sad to watch. He used to be on the side of the "little guy", but not anymore.

Belgium calling here. I travel the world for work and do this for the past 30 years. Some visits were brief, others for months up to a year and this all over the globe. There is simply not "the best country" and sure is not the US. I have no connection with that country as I find it very shallow in social life and over the past years got so polarized that politics is dominating social life. The US is uber commercialized and medicated. Yes, I pay 50% on various taxes and other "innovative" payments but I do not need to worry to meet months end when there is a medical issue. There is no slave labor in the restaurants so waiters need that 17-20% tip.
There is lots to say about my home country, trust me, really a lot and will never ever label it as the land of milk & honey but politicians can declare themself atheist without loosing voters, we have abortion rights, try as much as we can to keep religion out of social life, ... We still have a medical system that puts people first rather that green ...
I sure love going to Southern Africa but that is a bubble (got a higher income that the locals making my life a breeze compared to theirs), I like going to South East Asia but you can't criticize politics and for sure not royals and I can go own. Once again, I am not blind for the shortcomings of my own country but wish the US was also not so blindly patriotic and dare to question rationally their daily life.

Ten reasons I don’t regret moving to Japan:
1: The government actually functions and can get basic fundamental things like infrastructure, paying bills, ETC done, unlike the in the US. This was the main negative for me when I left back in 2011. Things haven’t any gotten better by the way, they’ve gotten worse.
2: No religion in public schools, nor even a hint of trying to weasel it in there, You get to learn it at church or one of the private religious school if you choose one like that.
3: A guy like trump would have zero chance of representing any serious political party.
    4: Affordable health care!
    5; Free ambulance rides!
6: Generally better and more considerate drivers.
7: Exceptional food, and staff are usually very helpful in retail ETC.
8: It’s easier to cycle as a general rule, this will actually vary by area, but in my area it’s great!
9: Trains run on time, and are everywhere.
    10: Fewer nut jobs.
Bonus: It’s a lot safer here, and I won’t get shot at school, the grocery store, the concert, the park, on the road, at church,, at the movies, at the hospital, at the club,, I could go on but I’m sure you get the picture.

Bill is smug, never any questions or argument about that. I can choose not to watch if I don’t want to. But this one in particular… it’s just another one-sided, whatabout-ist argument I’ve heard a lot from people with closed minds, skewed priorities, and a lack of context that normally remind, as Twain said, that “travel is the greatest cure for bigotry.”
There are different types of travel. I’ve lived in paradises, and I’ve lived in dictatorships. You get context, which is a hard thing to get. Immensely valuable, for sure - it forces you to question your preconceptions.
I’ve also lived in the Netherlands. And as far as Bill is concerned…
4 days does not a world traveler make.
As far as I’m concerned… America just, in hindsight, never actually felt like home. It does for a lot of people. If the role of a life is to find happiness for you and yours, then do that thing. My path wouldn’t work for everybody.
But this monologue just… smacks of a calcified and inflexible mind that has given up on the type of compassion that comes with understanding and curiosity.

Also, neither myself (I'm a high school teacher) nor my 7th grade daughter has been involved in or know someone who has been involved in a school shooting. Private schools don't get my tax dollars, and my excellent health insurance from my work pays for my dental, glasses and contacts, massage, PT, OT and acupuncture. Lastly, when I teach my students that slavery and the subjugation of Native peoples in Canada were filthy crimes that still need to be remedied as to their effect on those communities, I am supported by my school, my school board and my provincial education department.

    • @whiskybrush3219
      @whiskybrush3219 9 місяців тому +3

The downside of "affordable" healthcare is the complete abscence of health care. Canada is currently in a major crisis where health care is denied by way of wait times or simple lack of family physicians to a large portion of the population. Our budget based system makes it so that certain health occupations are capped in salary by way of restricting the operating hours of said occupations (anasthhetists, surgeons, oncologists to name a few). So if you happen to be one of the incredibly lucky enough individuals to have a family doctor, and you find a lump, you may find yourself on a 6 month to 2 year wait before you may be given access to diagnostics imaging (IF the referral doesnt disappear altogether), and yet another long wait before you can get a consultation to receive treatment which is yet another 6 month plus wait if you happen to still be alive by the time you get in the door. Surgical consultation for a debilitating physical ailment i am currently suffering from is 24 months. Already 3 years past diagnostic and 7 years past reporting symptoms seeking a diagnosis.
Add in the regulations by the surgeon general, a doctor will not colour outside of the lines and you are SOL if your symptoms deviate from a set of generic stats for a given illness. You will be denied treatment for a chronic illness for misssing 1 symptom despite suffering the other 9 out of 10. Treatment is also affected by the same guidelines. Doctors have lost their practicing license for attempting to treat lyme disease with anything other the 21day course of penicilin, which doesnt work.
The reality is, in Canada, for an Adult, the odds of being offered and receiving euthanasia, due to a serious but treatable illness are much higher than being provided timely diagnostics and treatment.
It does not feel remotely like a country one could feel proud of. It feels like a place where your best odds are just waiting to die.
