To my surprise, I don't remember to have been told about toe picks used for take off and landing in waltz jump, so I kept landing small waltz jumps on the middle of the blade! Thank you for clarifying this point!

Hi Coach Julia, I've got a qs: What is the safest posture to fall on ice? 😣 (cuz I fell and twisted my arm yesterday, when practicing the waltz jump.. Btw, thank you so much for your videos and teaching~~ I've learned a lot from them! ❤️❤️
Thank you for all the tutorial videos! My coach just taught me how to switch from inside to outside edge with one foot forward (not sure what it called in English since I speak Chinese lol), but I couldn't quite get it... I looked through all your videos but didn't find a tutorial about it. Really hope you could make one! Thank you :)
Cora Aquino No I didn’t mean one foot 3 turn. It’s moving forward with one foot, and keep switching from outside edge to inside edge, then inside to outside without turning
@hanhsiao Hi! I am so glad you are enjoying my videos. The move you are talking about is called and Edge Pull or a Power Pull in English. I would be happy to make a tutorial about that and will do my best to get it on my list right away!
Oh my God! yesterday we started waltz jump! I am so excited yet ultra scared cause coach just demonstrated silently and wanted us to do it center ice. Needless to say .. I wouldn't dare knowing i am going to 100% slip and fall =) Now with your initial practice and knowing that the toe pick is my point of balance, I feel excited to hit the rink and take over a wall for practice. THANK YOU! I fell a lot yesterday and annoyed my left wrist, bruised my right knee (no coloring just pain lol), and and hurt a bone down somewhere (nothing serious). But i am proud that I actually am excited to go to the rink! Just for fun since it is the weekend and practicing is literally dangerous in those public sessions lol
This is so helpful bc I was practicing the waltz jump out on the center ice, and since I was taught how to do the waltz jump by my friend the same day I was taught about bunny hops its been difficult haha 😅 this video is a real life saver 💛💛
Thc. Did not tried yet cuz missing sone other skills but hipefully will soon. I thinj very good explained. Like the preparation at the wall. Some coaches unfortunately miss that one which is super scary and a recipie for a fall for sure. Love your videos
So, I tried to do this before watching tutorial and I was doing like a weird 3 turn jump thing 😂 I mean it don’t look bad but, it’s not right ahah, thank you for this tutorial!!
I love your explanations, I´d love to watch this video before I learned the waltz :D could be easier :D But luckily I followed most of the tips intuitively - like practicing by the barrier. Thank you and keep making videos
I landed my first Waltz Jumps today and now I'm wondering if I should practice it on both feet. I always jump from the left and land on the right. 🤔 It's such a nice feeling to land them for a beginner! 🎉
This is awesome! I have taken group lessons on and off for the past few years but I never go into the free/pre-freestyle classes because they are during a time I work, so I tried a private lessons teacher but they never told me to go through my topic for the takeoff or the landing soI've just been taking off of the blade!! That looks like it makes much more sense they also never told me it was supposed to be on a curve. Don't get me wrong I think she was a good teacher for other skill levels but I don't think she was used to teaching adults who want to do higher level skating.
I am sorry to hear your coach didn't fully explain this jump to you. Unfortunately a lot of coaches just jump into it after completing their own skating career and don't take any of the instruction courses that are available to them. So they have an understanding of skating, but not an understanding about how to break down a move in a zillion different ways so that skaters can comprehend it.
I can do the waltz jump fine, it’s just I’m terrified of jumping. I can do a half flip as needed for freestyle 1, but I just cannot do the waltz jump. Any tips?
Thank you for this, do you have any exercises to practice rocking up onto the toe pick? I'm really struggling rocking up high enough onto it for a stable take off
Omg that means I HAVE been practicing a waltz jump right off ice LOL I just started practicing it off ice not knowing how to do it and just guessing but I guessed right!
Hello Julia, Thank you for this amazing tutorial. I actually learned how to do the Waltz Jump with this video and I feel safe doing it now. Only quastion I cannot answer myself is: how can I jump higher than just taking off the ice a few centimeters? Do I have to go deeper in my knee on the sakting knee for take off or bring my knee more up from the free leg? Thank you for your answer!
So glad my tutorial was a help to you. For a higher jump you will want to do a few things. Increase your speed at take-off, deepen the bend into your take-off leg and then increase the force of your jump off the ice (and also jump all the way through your rocker so that even the tips of your toes are pushing). And finally you will want to get the strongest swing to the front through your free leg that you can. hope that helps!
Hello Julia, Thank you very much for all these ways to increase my jump height. As soon as the ice rinks will re-open, I will get on the ice an try it :)!
Thank you for really talking about landing and the toe pick. Everyone talks about the edges and check position, but they usually forget to say, "Oh yeah, don't just come down on the flat of the blade or you're gonna be in for some pain lol." If I can describe landing without a toe pick, it feels like walking up the stairs and thinking there's another step, only there's not. A really heavy step down, sometimes a fall onto your face, the general feeling of almost having died, y'know. That's why god invented toe picks. To avoid that terror. :D
I’m really struggling to end on an outside edge and I think it might be due to where my hip is when I land but also general discomfort in going backwards outside edge. Should you be able to do backward outside edges first before attempting a waltz jump? And when you land, are your hips open to the left? Everyone at the rink makes it look so easy!
So much help! My biggest fault is that I feel like I'm not getting enough "air" on my jump. Is this because of lack of speed or lack of bent knee going into the jump? Thank you in advance for your help!
thesu this is freestyle one so if you’re in the beginners levels it may not be a good idea to do this yet. You have to get the basic skills down and get used to where you are on the blade. But if you’re ready for the jump it’s just all about practice and remember that falling will make you a better skater, you’ll get there soon enough!
Hey! I would recommend starting with bunny hops at the wall to build your confidence. You can build up to doing bunny hops away from the wall and eventually to waltz jumps.
Are you able to do them near the wall, but without touching it? Can you 'ween' yourself off the wall by moving away from it just a little bit and as you gain confidence moving a little farther, and then a little farther?
On all your videos you never start the video by first showing the skill and then talking about it and breaking it down, you go right into talking about it. It's very helpful to structure tutorials by first showing what it is you are going to teach.
Hi Julia, do you have any advice on how to rock onto the toepick for the jump? Sometimes when I jump I don’t take off from my toepick and take off through just my edge, but sometimes I can manage to rock onto my toepick, and it’ll be great if you can give me some advice :)
Thank you for these tutorials! I'm going ro start working on this one the next time I go to the rink. Just curious, where can I get boots simular to yours? I don't see brown or tan boots online too often.
My boots are custom Harlick skates. Most of the brown/tan skates you see are custom made. There is one company that recently started making a stock tan boot but I have really mixed feelings about it. Edea makes a boot called the 'showgirl' that comes in tan with a red bottom. It is designed for pro skaters/coaches who aren't skating as much. The mixed feelings come from the fact that I know several people who have ordered them and then were unhappy. But they were all switching from Harlick so I'm not sure how much of their unhappiness was that their Harlicks were custom and these aren't, or if it is just because it is such a cheeper boot?
For some reason I keep slipping off the back of my blade rather than using the toe pick to take off and it’s bad because I hit my head on the ice every time. I’ve been doing waltz jumps for a while and this problem has only just started occurring, I used to be so confident with them but it’s just like I suddenly have no control over it, do you think there is a reason why this keeps happening?
I am so sorry to hear this is happening! I would encourage you to go back to basics. Work on moving through the toe pick on the bunny hop and go back to the barrier wall and do your waltz jumps on the wall moving through the toe pick. I am not sure without watching you skate, why this is happening. But going back to basics may help.
For some reason, my W jumps have been getting worse lately. So I revisited this video and found 2 things; a) take off from the L toe pick. I don’t think I was ever consciously thinking about this part. b) Remember my Q in the Q&A video a few weeks ago about W=0A? Well, you already explained that in this video. I wasn’t paying attention while watching this video the first time. So I’ll go discipline myself today and practice 200 W jumps. 😔
Hello I really am struggling to land on my outside edge... I always land on an inside edge I have been practising the waltz jump for months... Just wondering if there is any advice for that and for what I may be doing wrong
I have a question coach Julia! Before i try my waltz jump, do i necessarily need to get good at backwards skating? I really want to try the jump allthough my backward skating isn‘t that good.
To my surprise, I don't remember to have been told about toe picks used for take off and landing in waltz jump, so I kept landing small waltz jumps on the middle of the blade! Thank you for clarifying this point!
Taisiya Tuisova wow, I am so glad I could share that important piece of technique with you then! You will be able to do bigger, safer jumps!

Are you able to do them near the wall, but without touching it? Can you 'ween' yourself off the wall by moving away from it just a little bit and as you gain confidence moving a little farther, and then a little farther?
Your amazing, thank you for teaching
I appreciate that!
Thank you soooo much!!! Love u ^^
Awe, you are welcome!
On all your videos you never start the video by first showing the skill and then talking about it and breaking it down, you go right into talking about it. It's very helpful to structure tutorials by first showing what it is you are going to teach.
I have been doing that for a while now actually, but this is an older video, before I began putting a demo first.
Hi Julia, do you have any advice on how to rock onto the toepick for the jump? Sometimes when I jump I don’t take off from my toepick and take off through just my edge, but sometimes I can manage to rock onto my toepick, and it’ll be great if you can give me some advice :)
Can you do it going forward or just backwards??🤔
This was great! Can you do salchow next?
I will definitely try and get to Salchows soon!
Really thank you video
I feel like I can do it on the wall, but once I’m off the wall I get nervous, any help?
thank you so much!
You're welcome!
wow!
I have edea motivo skates. Can I practise a waltz jump with these?
Does taking off and landing on toe pick trick apply to doing waltz jump with inline figure skates as well or it's just for ice skates?
For some reason, my W jumps have been getting worse lately. So I revisited this video and found 2 things;
a) take off from the L toe pick.
So glad you got clarity on that question! Sometimes we need to hear things a few times, or different ways before it sinks in.
Hello
I really am struggling to land on my outside edge...
You really should be able to hold your backward edges before you try waltz jumps, as you need that back outside edge to control the landing.
