Geoguessr Maps: Areas with Tragic or Disturbing Backstories [PLAY ALONG]

- Today it's some good old fashioned play along Geoguessr, only each and every location is going to come with it's own unbelievably dark backstory.
"Terrorist Bombings, Murders, Industrial, Environmental and Natural Catastrophes, Mysterious events of any sorts" ..to be specific.
What a great idea for a map. Join me as I explore it's fascinating stories, and don't forget you can play along to try and beat me score!
PLAY ALONG: Play your round, put your marker down, then switch tabs back to UA-cam to watch my attempt and the result. This way you don't ruin the game or the video!

“I haven’t played geoguessr in more than a month” - Tom more than 12 times per year
hey. screw you buddy!
I just wanted to laugh that he didn't know what a squall or freighter is or that an LLC is a business, but I wouldn't recognize a lot of English words if I didn't watch QI/top gear etc so I'll cut him some slack haha
I will admit "rest in peace the chlorine crew" got a chuckle out of me 😭
Tom is acting mad 😂
I feel bad to admit the same lol
no way he said that with a straight face 🤣
To be fair, most of the people on the memorial were probably among the chlorine crew. They got hit with the worst of it. It's nasty stuff.
Interesting map, to say the least. The Zarnesti memorial refers to an accident from 1983 when an ammunition factory (Tohan SA) exploded, killing almost 40 people and injuring a few hundred. The event was largely muted by the communist regime.
Tom needs a memorial now: "Rest in peace... the Chlorine Crew"
😂 that killed me. Not like the chlorine crew though.
That shit caught me so off gaurd 🤣
@@ryandeno Chlorine gas often does...
That made me chuckle
Ooh my Goood 🤣🤣🤣🤣
For those wondering, the first round in Moscow was the site of one of 4 of the 1999 apartment b*mbings that was used as a casus belli for the start of the second Chechen war
I wondered about this, thanks. My first thought was actually the Russian Chessboard Killer who's victims were mostly around a park in Moscow.
путин взрывает дома
apartment bombings. No need to censor yourself mate.
Which were orchestrated by Putin
"bombings" doesn't need to be censored.
If you liked this map, consider "Strange & Scary World" - It's a map I've made, that I've worked on for some time that now features 500+ locations of supposedly haunted, creepy, abandoned, tragic, disturbing locations. 😁 Atlasobscura has helped me massively with the idea, but I'm always scouring for new places. Sometimes I find what I think is a new place, go to add it to my map and realize I already did though.... welp.
I also have a map that is literally just Greggs locations. "where's that greggs" lmao. 250+ bloody greggs shops.
Greggs? Makes me hungry.
Can confirm the Gregg's map is a great map 👌
ooh that sounds fun, the abandoned places map is one of my favorites
I should do a "where's that wal-mart" map.
Like so Tom sees this!
This is such a cool idea for a map, I love it. But it's definitely disturbing.
@@therealgoody it depends, some people are more disturbed then others, i personally find it fascinating and disturbing at the same time
@@shavranotheferanox7809i think people have become desensitised to these atrocities through the media. Always in the news they are showing something terrible that has happened in the world, and after time is just becomes another bad thing that had happened. it detracts from the fucked up things that have happened, no fault from the individual though
It's an interesting map that I think is relatively educational, I got put in a spot in Canada that I'd be quite near to many times where some mining disasters occurred in the 50s and earlier and I'd had no idea until now.
I will say that I had one weird glitched round, I was on a tropical (palm trees, visible ocean) coast/island and unable to move around, I put a guess on an island in the Pacific and I got one point since it said the location was Toronto, Canada at an intersection that I've crossed through and can absolutely guarantee it is not. So there seems to be at least one bugged location in the map.
@@bobsbobbs If anything at least people are educated about the events. Some of these would just fade away as one of many accidents or catastrophes. I mean half of history is a bunch of messed up things
I think i might have heard of most of them after watching a lot of Plainly Difficult and Fascinating Horror 😅
and also HEINO! MEIN BIER LIEBENDER FREUND!
FYI :The old-looking font you saw spelled out "Mass." which is short for "Massachusetts," the state Boston is in.
Also, LLC means "Limited Liability Corporation" not that it will help you with locating things.
“East Ocean City”. Guesses West Coast. 🤦♂️
@@smgibb As in the UK's "Company Limited", "Co Ltd" or "PLC".
@@blackhawk7067 East Ocean can just refer to the Sea of China or something like that.
I came here to say the same, seemed a giveaway! Ohh and .LLC is explained elsewhere, but in Australia you may see PTY LTD, or LTD
LLC is a term (I am guessing American) for "Limited Liability Company" so you will see it all over the place in the US. It is very similar to seeing the word "Corporation" or "Corp"
You are correct
It's like a plain old "Ltd" or "plc" in the UK
LLC is more used for partnerships than for standard corporations. It's used for professional businesses often like doctors or lawyer's practices, or one-off partnerships like when producing a movie.
My favorite regional variant is GmbH
@@Jetlinerven though not exactly the same, my favourite has got to be GmbH & Co. KGaA
Turns out that “fishing pier” on the Sunshine Skyway bridge question was actually the remains of the old bridge as they demolished it and built the new one next to it.
The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is also now famous for being a common place for people to jump from. There is a site that keeps track of all the people who jump from it. I unfortunately recognized it the second it appeared because my father was one of such people.
❤
So sorry for your loss
fuck i didnt expect the end so sorry :(
Dang, I hope you are okay.
Came here to say this. My mom and I were stuck in traffic just like in the picture back in the late 90s because of a jumper. Look at the fencing on the side of the bridge. I’m not sure the 1980 collapse is why it was included
UA-cam will love this video I’m sure
spot on! never watched geowizard nor geoguessr in general before. This just got randomly recommended to me

The fishing thing you noticed off the Skyway bridge is actually remnants of the old bridge that collapsed. There's one span that's inaccessible in the middle, but the north and south sides of the old bridge are popular fishing spots.
I wondered if that was the case.
I couldn’t believe he got that even though he never heard of that bridge collapse. It wasn’t all luck, but damn that was lucky
Crazy to think my parents were 5 miles away and 5 years old
I almost immediately thought of Brick Immortar when I saw a bridge and I knew there was tragedy behind it.
yep, pinellas resident here. the bridge was really good for fishing but yeah it got overfished. too bad theres very few good catches there. so far past few times ive caught only bait 😢
I could listen to Tom all day finding out about disasters. Such a natural voice for it
Mass.medical... who else was screaming: MASSACHUSSETS?
It's actually incredibly refreshing to watch a video that doesn't tiptoe around touchy subjects and even offers up some advice for becoming more informed about it.
I recently watched a video about the Sunshine Skyway Bridge disaster by Brick Immotar and it really is a tragic story. The guy that survived was knocked unconscious initially and woke up at the bottom of the inlet inside his car. He was ex military and managed to stay calm enough to escape from his car and swim to safety.
A car managed to stop on the precipice of the collapse, but was unable to stop the other cars and greyhound bus in time, and had to watch them plummet to the water.
Hey Tom - Quick tip - if you think you are in an urban downtown center somewhere in America, and the roads are curvy or not on a grid, chances are you are on the east coast. Cities in the middle and west coast are nearly all on a rectilinear street grid.
except Seattle
Could also look at the manhole in the street too It looks like it says Boston on it at 19:54
@@benjaminwest6657 Seattle is very much on a grid.
And if it's really curvy it's fahrkin Boston
You mean the US? Because they doesn’t apply to the rest of America
The first Russian one (19 Guryanova Street) is part of the 1999 Russian apartment bombings that resulted in 106 deaths and 249 injuries.
Thank you for responding. I was curious about it, and hoped that I'd find someone mentioning it in the comments.
I do remember reading about the bombings, quite a mystical thing if you dig deeper, a lot of conspiracy theories around it.
First, some politician announced that another, third, bombing has happened, but he announced it too soon, it happened only 3 days later. Then there were some KGB caught planting explosives, but then they were released and it was said that it was just a drill to keep people alert, and they planted sugar instead of explosives. Later there were some attempts at independent investigation, which was obstructed in different ways, including mysterious deaths and assassinations of politicians and journalists. One of assassinations is famous ex-FSB guy who blamed FSB for bombings, Litvinenko.
The contrast between the lighthearted interlude music and the seriousness and gravity of the location Tom's searching for is an editorial masterpeice. Thank god he was recording...
16:53 something tragic happened here, there's a memorial with a long list of names ... *numa numa yei*
Love Tom’s use of a “More Than A Feeling” piano cover while he was searching in Boston - well played!
It was too loud compared to his commentary, though!
that guitar solo is too good, so good I learnt it lmao
Well spotted! I missed that
Tom, thanks for doing this one, despite possibly taking the hit monetarily. This specific concept is absolutely fascinating, as much as it is disturbing. There is something eerie about being in these locations and either not knowing of the historical context, or feeling the weight of the tragic past. I also think this could be a tremendous interactive/educational tool for generations to come. Cheers.
Yeah these huge sinister disasters (or how you want to call them) are often getting swiped under a rug on a wider global scale but especially for the locals and often on national level still being very tragic, let alone for family members.
Its a good thing that these sad events can get some more attention every now and then as a small form of support.
"monetarily" lmfao
How in the world would this ever get demonetized lmao. Him saying the word "shooting" or "terrorist" is enough to lose ads?? You're allowed to say fuck now, I really doubt he lost any money from this lmfaooo
"we can rule out New York, we can rule out Philadelphia"
me: "WHY"
"why? I hear you ask, because of the number plates"
hahahahaha this dude is my favorite
I don't know if Tom saw, but the fishing pier that was close to the Sunshine Skyway bridge is actually the old part of the bridge that didn't collapse. They partially deconstructed it and converted it into a pier
Tom, you even said Mass. Medical Office out loud. Mass. for Massachusetts made me think Boston, but I was thinking of the marathon too.
The Boston marathon thing happened at the end of the marathon, which is right in front of the Boston Public Library, on a really wide street (for Boston). Definitely not in Chinatown, on a tiny street.
@@thewiseturtle I think both Tom and I realised that but couldn't think of another tragedy in Boston (apart from wasting perfectly good tea!).
I thought it was the molasses flood, but I was screaming Boston the whole time
this is a great map. Half of why geography is so brilliant is because of the history underlying it.
Tom absolutely captures the human experience by sometimes saying genius things like as soon as he’s placed somewhere he’s immediately like “this is Eastern Europe” and sometimes saying nonsense like “I wonder what LLC stands for; that could be clue” 😂
This is actually coming at a very convenient time, because a few hours ago I got Hashima Island off the coast of Nagasaki; which is an island well known for being involved in Japans industrialization, but also their war crimes and forced labor. Interesting stuff.
same here! just a few hours ago i was committing war crimes, very interesting🤔
@@mattblack6736 Great timing, I was hoping to become a victim of a war crime
THESE COMMENTS OMFG I’M DYING

Ah I showed my dad this island when I was younger, it's always fascinated me after seeing it in school on darkroastedblend.. what a monument
"East Ocean Seafood" sign and "Mass. Medical Office" were the best clues you could've gotten, I thought you would've had that one. The Atlantic might be west for you but it's east for us haha. Also, It's pretty funny that the only reason I recognized the skyline because of Fallout 4.
Seeing "Mass. Medical Office" and not thinking of Massachusetts is peak Tom.
Yeah... Almost like he is not American...
@@alexviau6950 I'm not American either and immediately thought of that.
Oh god, that was so ffing strange to see my childhood street in here. I was 3 when explosion on Guryanova happened. I remember we were driving home with my grandpa from countryside in the morning when the radio informed that it happened in our street, but without a house number. So about a half an hour we were rushing as maniacs cause, you know, there was no mobile phones to call home.
Then more info came and we felt relieved, it was a few blocks away. I didn't quite realise until many years later how shocking it was. My sister's teacher lived there
I drive over the skyway weekly. Knew from that thumbnail immediately what it was. The new bridge is very pretty with the lights at night. Not to mention huge
Same here. Agreed! The view of it from downtown st pete is amazing
@20:40 LLC means limited liability company, it's a US legal form, comparable to Ltd. in the UK.
The first one in Moscow was one of the regions that was bombed in Russia in September 1999. If you want more info about it, just google this "1999 Russian apartment bombings" The one that was shown to Tom is happened on 9 Semtemper 1999 and it happened in 19 Guryanova Street in Pechatniki

The little Boston interlude while you searched around Boston was a nice touch.
I would love for more of these, its a dark subject but I feel it’s important to learn and remember these tragedies.
I really appreciate this trip into history and the chance to learn. I also like this theme. Disasters are always fascinating! Thanks
I’ve been binge watching you and Wendigoon’s videos lately and this just so happens to be a nice middle ground of the two of you lol you got to do a part 2 to this. This is a good one.
Morbid curiosity is a very strong feeling, and this map is great. Hopefully we can see more of it in future videos.
Tom I found your channel a month or two ago and have already watched nearly all your irl adventures. Just want to say your commentary/situations you get youself into make me laugh harder than almost anything else!
This was honestly really interesting. Would love more videos on this map, and also appreciate the info on the specific locations. I genuinely hadn't heard of any of these events.
LLC stands for limited liability company, nothing to do with the state or city :) loved this video!!! Keep the geo content coming!!
This is gonna be a good video.
Always like the more obscure GeoGuessr maps.
This was really interesting. Would love a part 2 on this map
Great video title, can't wait to see what these are all about. Love to see more GG content of you after the other projects.
This was one of the most fun geoguessr maps in a while
True Crime and Geowizard is a fantastic combo. I would watch more of this map
i'm so glad you googled each one as you went, great learning experience!
I really hope you continue with this map type! It's very interesting seeing the places of history and you discovering the past of areas you may or may not know about :)
When I saw the warmup go to Moscow... I realised just how brutally dark each location would be given I knew what the Moscow one referred to.
Such a cool map! I’m so fascinated with tragedies and disasters such as these.
when you found the skyway, i genuinely cheered! I drive this bridge everyday for work.
I love the real-life adventures on this channel and was hoping it would be mainly more content like that, but this video was phenomenal. Very interesting and entertaining. Keep up the great work! 🌍🧙♂️
Hey Tom, great video and interesting subject
Didn’t see anyone say it and I don’t recall hearing you say it in the video, but LLC just stands for Limited Liability Corporation. Just a business term describing how they handle liability and such. I’m not too well versed on business stuff so that’s the best I can give
Another clue on the building, Mass. is Massachussets. Astonished Tom missed it.
LLC basically just means that the business is its own entity, so the owner(s) are not personably responsible for any liabilities or debts. This protects the owners from having their personal assets used as collateral or affected any way by the business process.
@@matthewhann1337 Great explanation
@@matthewhann1337 That's right. If the company goes belly up, your shares will lose all their value, but nasty men won't be coming to repossess your house. (Assuming you don't also become bankrupt as a result, that is!)
We use LTD in the UK. If the company has publicly-traded shares, then PLC (Public Limited Company).
Tom: It's not NY or Philly because of the number plates
Also Tom: That MASS Medical Office sign needs some work... now, where are we
Really enjoyed this one Tom, please do an other one. Always more fun to do this with playalong than just jumping in on my own :)
Lovely video and a great map. Amazing to play along, get better at the game while also learning more about these tragic events.
Dude you gotta do this map again, that was really fun & interesting
God damn, I was actually thinking of making a map like this. With memorial locations added in, etc.
Retrospective edit: Mass Medical Office was your clue on the last one, Tom. Mass, as in Massachusetts, haha! :)
I was wondering what Mass was about! That makes so much sense.
@@thespankmyfrankAlso it was “Mass.” with a period, meaning it’s an abbreviation, so another clue it actually stood for Massachusetts
Was yelling at my screen about this hah. And the obvious Uganda google car but I know that's not his thing.
@@Actual_Malice I had already figured it was Boston, then figured he just didn't realize it said "Mass.", then he just read it out loud without thinking about it and I just lost it

this was a good video. Id love to see it again. Love the history and tough maps
You know what, I'm one of those who subbed for the adventures but you've won me over with the interesting history here and I'm going to have a go myself.
I read that wrong and thought you said “I’m going TO GO myself” I’m like uhh please don’t go to some of these places😂
Don't have a go - it costs to play now, and is not worth it.
@@BodywiseMustard It's definitely worth it and necessary. Google maps, especially street view, isn't free after a certain amount of usage.
For example, I just checked Google Maps Platform pricing and for Dynamic Street View on Android costs $140 per 10,000 uses.
You do realize how popular Geogussr is right? So unless you expect them to lose millions and go out of business you gotta pay that $5 a month, no way around it.
oh my goodness ! it’s the first time seeing a city I am intimately familiar with on this channel - it’s fun to watch Tom struggle with an answer that’s so obvious to me
This is such a great episode. I learned about these happenings I never knew nothing about

Love the 8-bit songs appropriate to each round, like Numa Numa (or whatever) for Romania and More than a Feeling" by Boston.
more of that map, please!!! super interesting and educating !
Good to see you back at Geoguessr 🍻 love your other projects as well though 😊
Class video, hope we get more History Lessons with Tom. Also LLC is limited Liabilty Company, like americas equivalent to our LTD
I’m sure you probably don’t like this video as I imagine there must be no monetising, but I found the video cool, and the history of all the areas (though sad) fascinating.
I've been saying since I started playing Guoguessr in 2020 that they should add educational stuff to their maps, so at the end of the round, you'd get some information to learn about the area.
Got to love the upbeat music playing while he searches for places with tragic backstories
20:53 Mass. Medical Office, with Mass being for Massachusetts (presumably)
Very interesting idea for a map, and it makes for a great video. I hope we see more of these!
When the new bridge opened the last driver was the first public driver across. This was also the site where Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn collided with vessel Capricorn. 23 men aboard Blackthorn died. Seamen Flores while the tender was sinking opened the lifejacket locker and held a hatch open using his belt so others could escape, this final act of heroism ended his life.
Tom you shouldn’t worry about missing on the Boston round, that’s a really hard location. I’ve actually walked on that Beach St sidewalk (under that building restoration scaffolding too) many times because my good friend lives around the corner on Washington St and I didn’t even recognize where it was.
This really cheered me up. Hoping for a part 2 soon.
Had a little chuckle at the more than a feeling solo, funny because as soon as you mentioned Boston that exact part of the song came to mind xD
In the first round I went to Johannesburg, and believe it or not, there I found a "WESTGATE SHOPPING CENTRE". Unbelievable. It was oriented on the map the same way as well. So I clicked it. And was ways off.
Westgate are an Australian company who own shopping malls worldwide.
@@philroberts7238 I figured as much. It's just so unlucky that I happen to find the same chain in a random African city I choose, and then it even looks exactly the same on the map.
As a Romanian, Zărnești is known for two big tragedies, the first one being the chlorine infestation you mentioned and the second one was the explosion of the ammunition factory in 1983 where around 30 people lost their lives.
Yikes... That's a really cursed town.
The ammo factory was the tohan factory, so i think it was about that one
I’m from Tampa and couldn’t believe it when the Skyway popped up on your channel. Very sad backstory from the collapse to the endless lives lost there. But it is a commute I take often, to and from St. Pete, and as always I appreciate your content. Keep it up
Definitely an interesting one! Would like to see more!

I actually thought the boston thing was the boston chinatown massacre in 1991, even though it was on tyler street, which basically is one street over to the east.
I did not find that club collapse thing 😅
I thought the Boston one was where the fireworks warehouse exploded in the lat 80's. (I saw it a day or two later and it was still burning. Because... you know... fireworks.) But that was also a block or two away.
Did some research as I didn't feel the club collapse was the right one. There was a car that slammed into a gas/petrol station on the area and killed quite a few people in 2009. Most likely that's what they were tryna get at?
Awesome job! I guessed Kigali for both African rounds. They just looked so nice, but I couldn't keep the voice out of my head how things could go so bad. This game and your videos made me realize how Rwanda has developed to look quite western over the years.
