An interesting fact about the Zimbabwe guy - Tawanda Kanhema - is that he is actually responsible for the majority of Street View in the country. He funded the trips by himself because he just wanted to make Zimbabwe more representative. :) And here we all are, watching Tom thanks to this guy's effort!
I came here to add this comment but you beat me to it. When I saw it was not just a photosphere I had to Google the guy's name and I'm really impressed! "He helped map 500 miles of Zimbabwe for Google Street View as a volunteer."
Nassau (not the one on the Bahamas) was actually a country once upon a time - it was part of the Holy Roman Empire and existed from the 11th century until 1866. In the later stages the capital was Wiesbaden, today the capital of the german state of Hesse. Members of the house of Nassau rule the Netherlands to this day.
@@chinook6394 How so? It wasn't really a nation-state as we understand them today, sure, but there was a territory of Nassau as part of the Holy Roman Empire. It changed names a couple of times due to the ruling house changing its name because they integrated other houses but the line ruled the changing territory around what is today south-western Hesse and parts of Rhineland-Palatinate until it was annexed by Prussia. It might not fit 100% by a modern definition of a country, but by that standard neither would midieval Prussia or Bavaria.
Nassau, One of the most culture shock places I've ever been. One part was overly glamorous, mansions and a huge hotel, and the other part was horrendously underdeveloped with some very poor neighbourhoods that our tour driver would not even let us out the car around.
I've never beaten Tom in a play along challange, been off 1 point twice now on Capital Cities of The World. 24998 thanks Tonga, WHO DOESN'T PUT A POLICE STATION ON THE MAP WHAT THE FUCK TONGA
I assume the flagpole park issue is due to the fact that the person who uploaded the photosphere likely just selected the official landmark on google maps to place their picture. I've found this to be very common with photospheres at monuments
I am always amazed at Tom's amazing attention to detail in some cases, and then total lack of attention as he reads "Blackbeard's Revenge" as "Buccaneer's Revenge" not once but twice!
Every Australian watching had a chuckle when you said 'goon' and 'goon bags' hahahaha. For reference, here goon in a slang word for boxed wine, the goon bag being the bag the box wine is dispensed from lol.
When Tom said "Nassau... is that a country?" I mimed slapping him across the face, and he immediately replied "Don't you bully me" as though he had some sort of psychic powers.
I’d love this map to have multiples in as many cities as possible. It’s great fun but with only 198 possibles, the duplicates will appear way too soon.
In the Tonga round, there's a building to the south called "Adiloa Building" that got me that extra point! Then I dropped 2 points since I was a couple blocks away in Zimbabwe, and ended up with 24,998 -___-
PERFECT SCORE!!! I'm so happy! For once I looked really hard and tried to find all the clues. It paid off. Tonga was very unclear, but I finally managed to spot "Adiloa Building" which gave away the exact location. GET IN!
To be fair, it looks entirely like it that Tajik photosphere has an incorrect geotag. There is a different photosphere on gmaps that has the base of the флагшток in view and it looks nothing like the photosphere in question. I think I agree with Tom here, his place is correct and gmaps is not, the big inconsistency is the flower road that can clearly be visible on the map on the other side
24,986 points! this was my best playalong probably and i'm very proud of this one. It was so satisfying to find the island shape of tonga on the map after looking for several minutes. And on the last round I couldn't read the Zimbawe's thing, I've managed to look in a lot of capitals nearby southafrica and find a similar street in zimbawe, but it was some streets away and lose some points. Great video and awesome map. So hyped for the Straight line mission! have a great week from Argentina
For the Tonga round, I didn't know the flag or know any other clues, so I just compared the map on top of the car to a bunch of different islands and found it that way 😂
Wow, the third one was an absolute killer. Amazed I only dropped 41 points on that one. And the complete lack of clues for the final one threw me completely. I got entirely the wrong country so dropped a couple of thousand for that, otherwise I would have got a near perfect score.
At 12:52 you could just see "Adiloa Building" on the mall to the south through the trees which gave it away for me so managed to get a perfect score there. Although there was a red herring as Kosi Ulu is some way to the south of the capital.
Playalongs are the bread and butter and the reason I subscribed to the channel so keep it up! Nonetheless, better get these mission videos out soon or else... I shall be very annoyed. Greetings from Germany.
Finally got my first perfect score 25000 on this map. Get in! Round 1: knew Nassau from the Black sails tv show haha. Round 2 "i love laos". Round 3 loads of fun finding the island based on the shape, to be fair also got it wrong, but less wrong, wohoo. Round 4 : read "Tajikistan" in the bottom corner which felt a bit cheap. Round 5: was amazed that i guessed the same as you from reading Zimbabwe on that sign, and finding the intersection from the park. Great fun.
24999! Sadly I lost a point in Tajikistan, I clicked where you clicked but a bit further North which sadly didn’t warrant the full points. Got the rest of the locations pretty much spot on though! (Used the shape of the buildings in Tonga) And I didn’t even notice Tajikistan being written until you mentioned it! Keep going with this map, I have to say I enjoy playing it quite a lot!
Those were Laotic squiggles. You are welcome (to Vientiane)! And all of the ambulances of the quieter areas are all the bored elderly people going for joyrides so to speak. At your beck and call providing all the answers you ever wanted!
Back again with another summary of my rounds. Final score of 24,999 even though I consider round 4 a perfect round. So I got a perfect 25,000 in my head. Very proud of this one. So even though we got the same score, I still count that as a win against you!! LOL Round 1: Perfect score, I knew immediately that Nassau was in the Bahamas. I thought perhaps it was a trick and the "Taste of Nassau" restaurant was in a different city, but after searching Nassau I quickly found it on the map. Round 2: Perfect score. I immediately noticed the tablecloth at the shop to the left that says "I love Laos" so I quickly went to Vientiane. It took a few minutes of searching around before I found the hotel on the corner. I also focused on the butcher shop at first, just like you. Round 3: Perfect score. I stupidly searched around the Caribbean looking for the shape of the island on the google car, not even processing that it says "grid PACIFIC". idiot. I eventually went over to the South Pacific and found Tonga based on the island shape. You were right, it was a rewarding way to find it. Took a little scouring of the map to eventually find the right spot. I based it on the buildings, and how there was a little "plaza" where the back building was further off the road. Felt proud that I stuck it out and got this one. Round 4: 4,999*. I knew it had to be somewhere in the Middle East, and searched for Capitals with water areas until I came upon Dushanbe. I took a while to make sure I was in the correct spot, only to be disappointed with what I believe to be an error by the map maker. Based on the parallel of the circular cafe across the lake to the left, and the little squares that stick out on the platform we are standing up, I believe my spot to be correct. The giant flag pole appears to be on the same little jutting out island part, but I believe it to be across the lake to the south, where it is labeled on the map. Oh well, 1 point off regardless. But in my head I am calling this a perfect score. Round 5: Perfect score! OMG I was shocked about this one. I saw across the road the blurry sign where I could just make out the word Zimbabwe at the end. Then it was time to scour the map looking for something with a long name like that sign. I could see a park in the area, and I used the direction of the street to eventually find the building called "The Master of the High Court Zimbabwe". I decided to risk it all and go for it. It's very fun and interesting to me to see the similar, yet different ways that our brains arrive at the same conclusion. Thanks again for a great video.
I've been watching these for a while, but today I made a geoguessr account and played along for the first time! Managed to identify 4 capitals (only missed the Tonga round), feeling pretty happy with that
Oh, I had just about the same place in Tonga as you! I only found it after looking at a few of the island nations, because I didn't know what that flag was lmao. Thank you, (not) Google car for giving away what the island looks like! The final round was a crusher too. I saw the Zimbabwe, but it's just too damn blurry to make the other words out. The building also doesn't show up until you zoom very close. So looking for a similar string of words didn't help. Turns out I was only a few blocks away TT 24,990 and a pleasure as always!
I play the same map regularly, but I always find it somewhat boring to watch the video when I already know all the locations, because I did the rounds already
Ended with 24,993, was on a roll until the compass screwed me over in Tajikistan, I guessed near the other promenade you were looking at initially. Ended up losing 5 points in Zimbabwe anyways so I can't be too mad, really thought I found an intersection that matched but like an idiot I assumed the park wasn't showing up and that it had to be a major highway. A bit of a hint for Tonga was "Adiloa Building" across the street to the South, you could barely make out the A and some other letters, but "Building" was very clear and it was on the map. That one saved me since I was stumped as to what that huge building could be if not the Royal Palace.
So I had a look online, and the flagpole in flagpole park is actually the one you can see in the image, except its actually ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LAKE. Because it's 560 FEET TALL.
24,979 for me. Four perfect rounds (including Tonga after taking a long look at road layouts and building shapes), then dropped a few points in Zimbabwe as I was too tired to search for the "blur blur blur of Zimbabwe" and didn't think the location was that central. Anyway, thank you for another great video, the play alongs are always fun!
I feel you on the ambulance thing. When I first moved to Little Rock I stayed off of W 12th Street and was near the main highway and in a pretty bad part. Besides hearing 20-40 gunshots every night, we had Police and Ambulances fly by on the highway and street about 20-30 times a day on average. Little Rock has some horrible drivers 😂😂
Tom you should do a collaboration with France's Bourgeois. I've got no idea what it would involve, but you're both national treasures and I'm sure you could find a way to combine geography with trains and railways.
There is, or was, an engaging French TV series of railway related travelogues by a guy (Philippe Something-or-other I-can't-be-bothered-to-look-up) called "Les trains pas comme les autres". A bit like a French Michael Portillo, but better in my opinion. (And I enjoy Portillo's programmes a lot more than I approved of his politics!)
First one I knew was in the Caribbean because the boat was similar to “the Queen Anne’s revenge” which was famously the ship of Blackbeard, a pirate known for sailing the Caribbean seas. Just wanted to mention it as I was proud I made the connection.
Didn't quite get a full score, messed it up on the first round already, cause I didn't think it was that close to the coast. Got the country right tho, so only lost 6 points with my guess in the middle of the city. Then got 3 full score rounds after that, getting lucky with the Tajikistan one. Was initially going for that other park, but then changed to the correct one, landing my guess on the "wrong" side of the pond like you. Last round was a lot more tough, the text was so blurry and didn't really have much else to go for. Eventually came to the same conclusion that it must be Zimbabwe, but at that point didn't really bother to spend more time to find the exact place (partly because I still wasn't even sure, if I got the country right and partly because I already lost the perfect score), so just clicked a road that had somewhat right orientation, and was pleased to be only 563m away. Ended with 24992 total.
Man, that last one was cruel. I was having perfect scores until then (I'm really proud of it btw), but that last one just stabbed me in the back. Best regards from Hungary, Tom!
Dear Tom, with "Nassau is a country" you weren't that far off as the duchy Nassau was from 1806 till 1866 part of the German Confederation, i.e. a loose union of independent German states. Its capital Wiesbaden nowadays is the capital of the German state of Hesse. CU twinmama
I can't believe Tom didn't get Nassau for the first one. As he's a Brummie perhaps I shouldn't be surprised he knows nothing about shipping - but Nassau used to be one of the biggest flags of convenience, after Panama and Liberia. I'm surprised he mentioned Iran - the woman in the picture in Dushanbe wasn't covered, so that was impossible. My guess was somewhere in one of the 'stans. I'd have struggled with others though, so really impressed.
Was actually one road off on the Tonga round, still got full points! Also had the exact same reaction with the "correct" location on the flag pole round...

I never play, I just really enjoy your videos for some weird reason. :)
So I had a look online, and the flagpole in flagpole park is actually the one you can see in the image, except its actually ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LAKE. Because it's 560 FEET TALL.
Wow!
Goon bag is slang for box wine in Australia.
I screwed it up in the last one... 20701 almost my personal best on your challenges. Great Video!
Love the video. You should definitely make more of these.
0:00 Tom has become so in tune with different countries, he has learnt a whole new language...
Nassau was a country a long time ago, perhaps you were thinking of Nauru?
first 25k ever, first time i beat you, that game made my day :D
I feel you on the ambulance thing. When I first moved to Little Rock I stayed off of W 12th Street and was near the main highway and in a pretty bad part. Besides hearing 20-40 gunshots every night, we had Police and Ambulances fly by on the highway and street about 20-30 times a day on average. Little Rock has some horrible drivers 😂😂
You will forever be the worlds best UA-camr. Thank you for all your originality and hard work
Me and my partner are really looking forward to the release of your next straight line mish! Me and her absolutely love them!
Puck you miss!! Love Jonah from Tonga
Didn't you see the something of something of Mugabe!?
@@beorlingo No, i didn't see shit :D
Dear Tom,
with "Nassau is a country" you weren't that far off as the duchy Nassau was from 1806 till 1866 part of the German Confederation, i.e. a loose union of independent German states.
Love to see, that I know Nassau is the capital of bahamas but he doesnt :D 1st time, I beat him XD
@6:39 "I moved to a quieter place .. but there's frigging ambulances every ... 15 minutes" - Dude, did you move into a retirement community?
I love the capital map.. it's so much fun to play
2:50 very nice black and blue dress!
I do enjoy these play along videos a lot
Was actually one road off on the Tonga round, still got full points! Also had the exact same reaction with the "correct" location on the flag pole round...
The Adiloa Building in Tonga, Tom. You can just make out the name of it, and it's marked on the map. I spent ages looking for the police station too.
Round 4 drove me nuts. You were looking past "flag pole park" for a good 5 minutes when the photo was taken right in front of a massive flag pole.
I enjoy them, but I am pretty excited for the new straightline-mission!
Hey Tom, how about a second screen on your desk where you have your OBS open and we would never see if you are checking again :D But wait no, this has become a running gag on this channel i believe :D
Not me spending half an hour searching Cambodia's capital city before giving up and then Tom immediately highlighting the "I heart Laos" sign I had completely missed lmao
Love the play alongs:)
Get in! a GeoWizard vid just when i needed it!
Looking forward to a rare sporcle video soon maybe
Love these videoes keep it up wiz
I know a few flags in the south pacific, it comes from watching so many Sailing channels as these small island countries are common places to stop by on the way across the pacific ocean
The beard is coming in beautifully
Gutted as I was on for a perfect score until the last one, but finished on 24996. Great content!
