I started watching him about a month before he did the straight line across Wales and I was surprised to see that content from him. And he blew up over it, fair play.
There are better players than him in terms of knowing metadata and all that thing but what Tom absolutely smashes in is the organic way of playing the game if that makes any sense. No bollards, not much knowldege of road signs, just plays the game looking at the landscapes, languages, terrain, etc
Yeah fr I’ve watched other players that are “better” than Tom but they get most of their quickest and best scores off of memorizing things like what generation and quality of google camera it is or google cars and what road markings pertain to what country etc and it’s just not as entertaining. Tom is just the best lol
This guy has attempted to walk across a country in a completley straight line so many times and has failed. If he was the sort of guy to cheat in a game he would've found a way to cheat at those things too. Wayyyyyyyyy more time consuming, dangerous, etc. He'll literally crawl through brambles to maintain a straight line rather than go 10m to the left and walk around.
This is actually a very solid way at looking at it. It’s frustrating that being talented/educated at something automatically leads to claims of cheating. It’s a sour way of admiring someone’s ability to be great at something.

Only way I've ever cheated is by thinking "fuck this" and googling something I've seen like a town name. But I'm only fooling myself, it's not like I'm streaming it or claiming records.
Yeah, I think for personal playing it's fine to do that as long as you aren't claiming otherwise. I do the same if it is taking awhile and often it sort of helps me learn areas because I then have to zoom in myself and look around the area compared to just being told at the end where it was after I guessed really wrong when I'm not likely to then really see the area as much. I wouldn't do that on a play along or battle royale though.
For me it isn't cheating. Your target is to find a place where you were landed. For me it is a kind of challenge of looking for characteristic names, streets or places and then investigate them on the web. It is a part of the game.

If you're opening up another window or tab to get extra 'meta' information then you are cheating as it's not the intended way to play. There's a reason they don't provide the facility to do that within the game itself. Saying that's not cheating would be like me saying using an external chess solving engine to help beat an AI at chess isn't cheating. Not saying you shouldn't do it (since you're not really hurting anyone) but it is definitely and objectively cheating.

Tom is not a guy who would even consider cheating. He makes challenges for himself just to enjoy the game. He has to do dozens of attempts in order to get some decent runs, if someone watches his streams or videos knows that well
The ones who are better than Geowizard actually tryhard the game way more than he does. You can memorize bollards, google cars, phone numbers, road signs, license plates, road markings, and many other stuff that you can actually study. Geowizard actually focuses more on the landscape features which is probably the best way to play the game.
"Best" is subjective here fs. You even described a 'better' way to play where you're likely to get more points more often. If you're playing for fun instead of to win then his way would be more enjoyable probably.

when you start playing geoguessr a lot and get some insane guesses yourself you believe tom doesn't cheat. also when he gets an insanely wrong guess in a round that just makes you laugh and go "why did i think he was smart again?"
My first ever guess, on my first ever game, was a few hundred metres away just because I thought the buildings looked like Vienna. Never game close to that before or again.

It’s true. I’ve been playing Geoguessr a lot over quarantine and the more you play the easier it becomes to take a shot in the dark and get in the same country.
It was seeing Tom, that got me into Geoguesser. He's so natural & very affable & fun to watch. It's a great game, even just to have a little explore on. There's some amazing places, that you'd never know of otherwise. Another tip for the USA, is that you're rarely more than a few hundred metres away from a huge stars & stripes.
Been following Tom (not literally😂) for a while now. He's an absolute top bloke and someone I'd love to go for a pint/ have a smoke up with. On a side note Geoguessr is honestly well worth a go. I don't claim to be as good as Tom or any of the pros, but I've seen a marked increase in my geographical knowledge since I've started playing. It's actually super fun to play a game and learn at the same time - which 14 year old me would call me an absolute loser for saying haha.
It's annoying I love these podcasts I just wish the full things were also on video idk why like I love the podcast on Spotify but certain times I wanna see the actual full video it's a shame you can't upload them on like a vod channel but I guess that kinda defeats the point in going to Spotify to watch the whole thing. Regardless I love still getting these clips and seeing all the guests from different walks of life. I use to think Geowizard cheated himself in the beginning but after watching him and getting to see him behind the scenes he seems legit and a really nice guy. Keep up the great work 👍

Granis, Radu and Geography Challenges for me are three of the best Geoguessr players Granis is just levels above anyone else Tom makes the best content but these guys are insane
I always find having a good basic knowledge of the alphabets of the world helps. Being able to differentiate between Asian writing systems for example is really helpful.
A tip that helped me for whenever there is Spanish, is to look at the stop signs. If it's Spain it will say "stop", in Mexico it says "alto", and in most of South America (and I think the Caribbean) it's "pare". It's kind of weird how many little things there are that can help you figure it out. Also Tom is so smart, I have learned so much how to play this game from him. How people can accuse him of cheating is beyond me.
3:47 Actually, China has some 3D photos on Google Maps but not street images on StreetView. Germany is not entirely covered by StreetView, only the big towns are (Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg and so on). Fun fact: Google Maps streets in China don't overlay the actual ones and that is made on purpose.

I had this one really cool game of Geoguesser on a small forest road with red trees. Wish I stayed there and explored longer. I think it was in Kentucky Lesotho was also a cool round of geoguesser
A friend of mine used to differentiate between different South American countries by the backside of their road signs. Is it cross shaped, is it wooden or steel, etc. Couldn't cover all countries that way, but he could cross out a few. (Except for Chile, no one can account for Chile)
A simple way to avoid any cheating is to simply share the PICTURE. Take a screenshot and share that one. No code to look, no link to open, nothing. Who host the challenge is the only person having a link; all players just have a picture and must click somewhere in the map.
I played a few times on GeoGuessing and could barely get the pyramids of Giza in time. I think Tom is one of the best guessers in the world. He'd be ranked a lot higher on the site if he played it more.
