- Red Skelton is the sole guest on this episode as he participates in a ninety minute interview by Merv Griffin. Red discusses his childhood in his home town of Vincennnes, Indiana. He said he decided to become a comic at age 7, and made his debut in a medicine show at age ten. He converses about his career in burlesque, vaudeville, the Broadway stage, radio, movies, and TV. Red's 1937 MGM contract contained, at his insistence, a then unheard of TV clause, which he exercised to appear on the Milton Berle TV show. Today, Red says he is a painter, writer, and composer. During this show, Red leads Mort Lindsey's Orchestra in his own composition of the Red, White and Blue March, which has been recorded by the US Marine Corp Band. - IMDb

I can testify how wonderful a man Red Skelton was. I actually was working on this Merv Griffin Show, taking care of the stars at the dressing rooms, and after the show, Red went around to every single member of the backstage crew...Prop Men, Lighting guys, Musicians, Pages, and he shook their hands and thanked them for doing such a good job on the show. Everyone! I've worked in the TV business for 50 years, and have never seen any other start do what Red did that night!

God Bless Red Skelton, His real life stories touches ones soul. I was blessed to grow up when he was on the air many times per week. His goal was to give something to others. A type of medicine for those who watched. This civilization and the one I grew up in is not so civil as should be. There never will be another like him again.

Red Skelton was a beautiful person. I was lucky enough as kid to be introduced to him and built a nice friendship with him. He gave me gifts like his book on ghost stories and a few drawings. I would see him in Luchows in NYC. My dad had the oomphs band in the restaurant, and I used to go every Friday and Saturday night. Every time he came to the restaurant he bright a gift and would huddle with me for 15-20 minutes. I told him once, “you know red your the oldest kid in the world” and he broke out laughing hearing it from a 11 year old. When he stopped laughing he said “ You understand me better than 99.9% of my fans. My family agrees with you.”
He gave me a big hug. Then joined his dinner party. My dad knew him from the Jack Benny show where dad was a trombone player.

If I ever feel the need to be lifted up, Red Skelton would always be my go to happy fix. From the movies, to radio, and then television, Red has made me laugh more times than I can count. I remember once, as the family gathered to watch Red's shows on video, I laughed so hard, that my dad was laughing more at my laughing, than he was at Red Skelton's performance.... Red was that infectious to me.
I loved what Mr. Skelton stood for as a human being. He never wanted to hurt a soul. His humor was something the whole family could watch, and not be offended. There may be good comedians out there today, but Red Skelton was a class act. None has surpassed him, and I don't think anyone could. He is a one man show. Something that most comedians strive to be. But when Red was with other actors, he was the best at making them shine along with him. Whether it was written in the script, or really adlibbed, Red made it seem like a blooper, which made the scene all the more humorous.
This particular Merv Griffin show I had never seen. So watching it for the first time really was special. Red Skelton was genuine, he was funny, and he had the ability to captivate the audience.
If ever I had the chance to meet Mr. Skelton, I would surely be in the presence of pure joy. I would probably cry with laughter, slap my knee several times from the stories he would tell, and my stomach would be sore from the belly laughs. I could say he is the Prince of Clowns, but to me he is more than that. I think Red Skelton is the Clown Extraordinaire. I do hope he is resting happily, and reunited with family and friends with a laugh and a song in his heart.

I grew up in L.A. in the 1960's and went to many TV programs with live studio audiences. Game shows, talk shows, award shows, you name it, the tickets were free, so I went. I went to the Red Skelton show and can say he was one of two "stars" that treated their audience like gold. Talk to us between taping spots, even stuck around after the show was over to chat. He was a careing person. Steve Allen was also a kind hearted performer, who cared for the people in the studio.
Curious about what went on during the taping of his show. Were there many bloopers? How long due to set changes? Did Red do a warm-up?

Red had an interesting and incredible life. Listening to him recounting his experiences was like an oral history lesson of twentieth century show business. Merv had the good sense to let him simply talk. Red was wonderful on radio but with the visual element and immediacy on television he became a great performance artist. You have to credit Edna Skelton, his first wife with helping him develop his characters and style as writer/producer of his early radio programs. Some of the funniest radio moments are his sketches with Verna Felton.
He is a product of his era, I don’t think younger people get him. He is under appreciated today in my opinion.

He was a great man.
The trumpet player on the right behind the trombones is Jack Sheldon who sang 'Conjunction Junction' and 'I'm just a Bill' as well as the original Louie the Lightning Bug. The new Louie voices get close but are a pale copy. He also did some acting. You can see him in several episodes of Dragnet.
