I just LOVE how much Steve's eyes light up when describing video game control schemes. You can tell he's got the true heart of a gamer and I appreciate that so much.
I keep mentioning this, but I'll never forget meeting Stevie Richards at a Gamestop (this was around 2011, I think). I think he was buying a PSP, or maybe a Vita. I wanted to ask him about his Dr.Stevie gimmick in TNA; but I didn't wanna seem like a mark, so I asked him if he worked with friend of mine, who worked in the indies. He didn't know who he was; called him a legend, and that was it.
I had that dice based card game and it was awesome!! I used to photocopy the cards, white out the boxes, and make my own cards for wrestlers that weren't in the game (and for myself and my friends). So fun.
So im 35 and watched a clip of the 5 worst earlier, then i got the thumbnail for the full episode. As someone who appreciates gaming i was impressed w Big Stevie Cools knowledge of not just wrestling video games but of the devs and publishers. Game recognize game, im sure ill enjoy this . Big up fellas, this show rules and its only gonna get bigger. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
No Mercy still gets it for the story mode. The fact that in order to finish it you had to lose some of the matches, just made it feel like a proper story
This! Branching paths and multiple outcomes. It was easier to do when you didn't have to record voices and do motion capture for every scene in a game though
The fact Stevie gets so much heat from nerds over doing his job still to this day is criminal. Some people are just mental. Also hard agree with the Adam Cole thing, they could have built it with promo packages building to a return. The guy had a genuine struggle to get back in the ring, he is BELOVED, not just in the wrestling but in his personal life, and he went through all that ick with the concussions, and then the ankle injury, his girlfriend having a mini stroke, all this hardship you could build off of and make his return something legendary. Instead, we get a surprise and "oh he's good guy now" it was a dropped ball for a supreme talent.
Steven Richard’s is 93 overall in my Here Comes The Pain! And he’s the WWE Champion! Me and my dad play every other day in 6 man tag matches with us against Brock, Kurt and HHH .. so fun when you get Steven boosted up .. would’ve been awesome if it was real ..
One thing I loved in Smackdown 2 was the system for unlocking new moves and accessories for custom wrestlers. At random PPV events your opponent would get assaulted backstage and would be replaced by a custom-designed wrestler with move sets built around wrestlers who were absent from the game. If you beat them you unlocked the moves and accessories
Him and Blue Meanie are u lockable CAW parts in the first Smackdown on PS1 tho. Although why they couldn't just be standard character unlocks instead of pieces, I have no idea.
Proud to say I played the first smack down game on the PlayStation I remember playing as Stevie I think it still had the RTC theme I loved the buzzer noise
I'm only slightly older than James, but I look and feel older than Stevie, and I share a lot of the computer game memories you guys have. In Australia, our situation was closer to the situation in the UK, and doubly so for me as my father was English, so I grew up with the Amstrad CPC. I remember getting a box full of floppy disks with various games on them and just going through, trying them all out. Sadly, my interest in wrestling started quite late, so the first wrestling game I played was WWF Attitude (then WCW/nWo Revenge, then the Smackdown games before exploring the world of emulation and finding Fire Pro). Thanks for bringing back those memories, guys!
I bought a handful of old WWF/E magazines a few months ago, meant to send this to Stevie but now seems as good a time as ever. The October 2001 issue of WWF Magazine has Stevie's "Gettin' Heat" "Top 5 Wrestling Games of All Time". He mentions being a near 20yr gamer at that point and bringing his consoles on the road. Paraphrasing his choices, at the time. I typed this up before watching his current top 5: 5. WWF Attitude/War Zone - Rightfully points out they were virtually the same game, without the bugs fixed even! 4. Fire Pro Wrestling (SNES?) - Puts over the "electrified barbed-wire cage match with explosives around the ring that detonate if you don't win in time" 3. New Japan Pro Wrestling 4 - Much improved controls over War Zone/Attitude controls. 2. WCW Revenge and WM2000 - RIGHTFULLY puts these games over No Mercy, says WM2000 edges out Revenge because it has storylines. Gets in a dig at his former RTC partners, those ingrates! 1. Giant Gram 2000 (AKA All-Japan 2000) - One of the better looking and probably best playing wrestling video games of the time, offering near limitless choices in the ring. And a cool x-ray feature should you hit a particularly devastating move on an opponent. Recommends going to GameFAQs(!) for tips on the games and guides lol. Looking forward to more gaming content! Popped BIG for an N-Gage reference in 2024 and thank you James, Simpsons Wrestling was AWFUL.
YES! THE MEMO WAS WHAT I THOUGHT! LMAO, we all had a big laugh about that at the time, "Triple H in a vulnerable/prone position" was a big meme for a while lol
Yes, I distinctly remember him, Jacqueline, and the Blue Meanie being create a characters that you unlock. Is he missing out on check from WWE or the game creators?
Stevie doesn’t give himself enough credit throughout his entire career. I think Paul in ECW was the only one that believed in him enough to give him time to work his gimmick to get over with the fans
I'd definitely like to watch an episode where Stevie talks about the idea of a Wrestlers Union or stories of wrestlers working together behind the scenes to get better deals etc.
I used to play Smackdown vs RAW and basically ONLY played Velocity & Heat matchcards. I even made a CAWs of a Tag Team of my cousin and myself haha and of course Simon Dean. I used to play as Stevie (Stevie Night Heat pink trunks and all) and had great matches with Jericho, Goldust, Matt Hardy. Awesome memories! Thank you!
Yeah what he said about his character talking about your guy having potential was actually Smackdown! 1. You could unlock his parts and make him but it was more of a BWO style Stevie. Stevie was definitely a fully playable character in Smackdown! 2 and in his RTC gimmicks he's obviously just forgotten.
Wasn't Stevie an unlockable character on the first Smackdown? I remember when you reach certain levels you can Stevie, the Blue Meanie, and Jacqueline.
There was an official WWF tabletop roleplaying game from the 90's and it was amazing. In the rules you were required to pick an entrance song and play it every match while you acted out the entrance. And that just scratches the surface of what was included in the rules.
Casual Pro Wrestling is actually quite fun, a bit silly and still in early access. It has rag doll physics which is a really nice touch to a retro style game. Also Wrestling Empire/Wrestling Revolution is also brilliant take on the Yukes THQ style games.
So the reason Stevie takes Big Show's spot in the game is literally just the code---Stevie's character, when Big Show was removed, became what the code pointed to (you can even hack the game to see it somewhat, but gets real glitchy), so purely happenstance, but still an awesome way to become a main character in one of the best remembered wrestling games ever.
Back in 1997 I stumbled across a review on some webpage of Fire Pro Wrestling S: 6 Men Scramble for Sega Saturn (the SFC game released before it was Super Fire Pro X). The review was supposedly by Rob Fan Dam of all people. It peaked my interest so I ended up picking it up in 1998. Been a Fire Pro fan since then. Also played a lot of Tecmo World Wrestling, 3 Count Bout, Saturday Night Slam Masters, Wrestlefest, and Wrestlemania Arcade Game.
Stevie was fully playable in Smackdown 2. It was in Smackdown 1 where he was in the story mode and had his attire and face as a part of CAW mode, but not as an original character himself.
I was an HBK fan ever since he turned on Marty, and so when I came across ECW on Sunshine Network, and I learned about the BWO and saw Stevie looked like a parady of him I was hooked and was a huge Stevie Richard's fan ever since. I'll never forget that Monday Night Raw episode where ECW originally invaded raw. "We're taking over!" Awesome times!
Epic shout out by Stevie on Joe Montana SportsTalk Football! I used to play that every day on the Genesis with my grandpa as a kid. We always would run the fake punt pass and sometimes I still get "I DON'T BELIEVE IT" in my head when a team does something crazy in real life to this day. All time great game.
Glad to see this episode about games, I personally was a tester on the last game Stevie appeared in #RetroManiaWrestling … glad to be a part somewhat of you demands video game Legacy and good to see how big a fan he is
I can't believe the original and first ever wrestling game on the OG Nintendo , Pro-Wrestling was not at least brought up ! I had a blast playing that game as a kid.
On what you were talking about in the beginning, I don't think wrestling fans care about kayfabe anymore. We understand that it's a show that's being put on and we don't expect anyone to be who they are on camera. It's suspension of disbelief at it's highest point. The example Super Eyepatch Wolf uses it the Matrix. We are able to accept and enjoy that it is Morpheus and Neo sparring while also understanding that it is Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne doing a choreographed scene. The same is true of wrestling. We are able to watch Shawn Michaels Vs. The Undertaker and accept and enjoy that it is those two characters competing while also knowing that it is Mark Callaway and Michael Shawn Hickenbottom doing a pre-determined performance. That doesn't mean we don't want to know about the people behind the characters. A lot of people enjoy that part too.
I don't really mind as long as people are consistent. A lot of AEW wrestlers in particular will try to kayfabe the marks on Twitter until their delicate sensibilities get hurt and then you see the real them. Britt Baker springs to mind. Jade Cargill used to be like that too but I think she's dialled it back a bit since going to WWE. The Bucks love to play the snarky heels on social media but man, they don't like some of the stuff the fans say back at them and whine about it in interviews.
Just so you hear it, I'm glad you're alive, since introducing Raven you've entertained me and my family. Thank you for everything. This show is amazing
im a bit younger and i didnt really know who paul orndorff was until i started watching nitro last year and saw that gary spivey skit i thought it was hilarious and its unfortunate he had to retire a little after that
Wait a minute. So now I find out Stevie Richards is also a cat lover. As if I needed another reason to be a fan. Seriously though, love what you guys do with this show. Cheers!
I absolutely loved this episode!!! The game i grew up with was wcw/nwo revenge!! Goldbergs spear was unstoppable you could grab weapons out the crowd and use them was awesome!
It must be amazing to get to talk to you, your co-host is lucky. I loved your ECW career and I've used your character in many games including many championships on wwf no mercy
I miss the old AKI engine games so damn much, and is why I like the Def jam games as well. Those def jam games were originally made as the next gen AKI WCW games but when they went under that was when fight for NY was put into that engine instead.
Love the content fellas. Another great listen. I like the twist on this one with the video games. Stevie took me back on some of these games. That story about HHH at the end is crazy. I guess it pays to marry the Boss is daughter, you can make those demands.
WWE2K14 was the best game. Huge roster , a lot of arenas and metch types, 30 years of WrestleMania, Beat and Defend the Streak, The best creation suit ever with create a arena, title, finisher, story you could even make your titatron video. And you could upload and download everything.
I played so much Fire Pro Wrestling D for Dreamcast. Soooo many hours creating wrestlers from all of the different organizations and even some NFL players like Chad Ochocinco Johnson
Best shiw of the week, was in salem witch Country with all my ladys. Watching now on Monday after work.not a game guy but no doubt Stevie and the last English JAMES on wrestling podcast will make it great
It is astounding to me how aware Raven still was in the ring despite being completely out of his mind on God knows what at all times. (And I say that with astonishment, not shade - Raven is one of my all time favorites)
I genuinely think Stevie is awesome but "Stevie's pinned more comments than wrestlers" especially said by Stevie dryly as hell just in passing legitimately made me choke on my sip of beer! Seriously though, Stevie, it makes me so happy to see how well you're doing and I think you and J have by far the best show of the whole "wrestler/talent and host format. By the way no one deserved to replace Big Show in No Mercy and take his main eventer spot more than you, dude. Always saw you as main event level on that roster after that bro!
Damn, Stevie got great taste in games. I can totally relate to the late 80s/early 90s sports games era. Had Wrestlemania on the original NES and stood in front of the WrestleFest cabinet at the mall arcade at least a couple times a week. Looking forward to the action figures episode too! After hitting the WrestleFest arcade, stop by KayBee toys right afterwards and see what figures they had in the tight yet stacked to the ceiling aisles. Good times!
Stevie, I'm sorry for beating you up in No Mercy all those times. 🙏
I'm not lol
Wow, look at you good at blocky ass old wrestling games. I will get you a biscuit.
Well he was the leader of the RTC in that game, kinda excusable.
Great pedal btw
I bet he feels honored knowing that. It just proves he had a major impact on fans.
Stevie having a steam deck made him even cooler
Heck yeah I love that Stevie is a gamer. Let's see pro wrestling, video games, solid honest guy, yup Stevie is cool af.
You were actually in the first smackdown game in the build your own superstar mode, you are the character you start with before customization
This one is gonna be good!
Oh my God it's Stevie Richards!
Lol you beat me to it@@BuddyDude0112
Stevie being a gamer earned even more respect from me.
I just LOVE how much Steve's eyes light up when describing video game control schemes. You can tell he's got the true heart of a gamer and I appreciate that so much.

Smackdown vs Raw 2006 was gaming gravy 😎
@@EddyBamber BRO. I still have it and just played it! Ps2
@@EddyBamber Trish stratus 😍
2007 was better
Og smackdown vs raw was more fun to me. Fire pro is also top tier
Stevie is really the greatest. So glad he decided to do a show on UA-cam.

Heck yeah man! Your attitude is awesome man I love finding positivity out here!
No Mercy still gets it for the story mode. The fact that in order to finish it you had to lose some of the matches, just made it feel like a proper story
Your so uninteresting
This! Branching paths and multiple outcomes. It was easier to do when you didn't have to record voices and do motion capture for every scene in a game though

Famous Unknown F entered the building.
This was a very cool feature. That season mode was awesome, got 5+ years for 1 of mine
it's a cool idea but it takes like a great deal of real world time to unlock everything
@@F154B0N3 not everything has to be unlocked the first week...
I’ve been blessed to see from 1980-Now what a life of gaming and wrestling throughout the decades
Same here friendo, I was born in 79 but older brothers so I was watching wrasslin by 4 😂.
The fact that Stevie owned a 3DO gives him unbelievable nerd cred.
I wanted big show to host this episode with no explanation at all
It would be fun for when Stevie starts streaming games he gets Big Show to open the first stream for him as if it is a normal thing
LOVED this episode with BOTH of you pitching in and reminiscing on the wrestling and non-wrestling games - more please!! 😁😁
Correction on Steven's first WWF game where he was playable, Smackdown 2 Know Your Role on the PS1.
came out the same month as No Mercy. Also you could unlock his body parts in SmackDown 1 (aka his crop top and hot pants)
No Mercy came out a week before it
Him and Blue Meanie are u lockable CAW parts in the first Smackdown on PS1 tho.

Wrestling Empire is worth a look

it was smackdown 2
I think Stevie should try Wrestling Empire.
I'd be in favor of a playthrough lets play.

I’ve always loved Stevie but him being a nfl2k5 head is amazing! That game was so dope and ahead of its time
He brings up football and gaming most weeks, so it's only logical he'd be fan of the best football game ever made.

Steve a Space Ice enjoyer is an absolute win. :D
Stevie Richards holding his Steam Deck lights up my wrestling game fandom. 😅
What an awesome episode to see someone from the attitude era roster talk about all the games I grew up with.
There was an official WWF tabletop roleplaying game from the 90's and it was amazing. In the rules you were required to pick an entrance song and play it every match while you acted out the entrance. And that just scratches the surface of what was included in the rules.
they missed WWF Superstars... unforgivable...........
Casual Pro Wrestling is actually quite fun, a bit silly and still in early access. It has rag doll physics which is a really nice touch to a retro style game. Also Wrestling Empire/Wrestling Revolution is also brilliant take on the Yukes THQ style games.

The Day of Reckoning games were actually really good.
@@CMc-v7z look at you good at blocky old ass video games, I'll get you a biscuit.
🤣🤣🤣🤣😋
@@KDill29 biscuits all round my friend.
So many great memories with Raw 2 on the OG XBOX 🤘
Same. Although I didn't like the gameplay but creating entrances with your own music from hard drive was kino
Good times!
A 63 in HCTP?? …. Stevie you’re a 73 to me. ❤️
73 is still a little low for me, I would add an additional 5 points to bring it up to a 78.
I'LL SHOW YOU YOU'LL SEE!!!!
Here in America, everyone I knew around my age called the NES just "Nintendo", and when the SNES came out we just called it the "super".
Yes
Giant Gram 2000 for the win
