Derek Poundstone reminds me of my childhood days. Me and my Dad used to sit down every Christmas religiously and watch these guys compete. Poundstone and Pudzianowski had some good battles over the years, especially in the deadlift and overhead pressing events. Man I miss all these former strongmen.
Me too. Loved them. Every time I saw Mariusz, I was like "wow, bigger and more ripped". The man looked like he should have been in a butcher's shop window. If I'm honest, he did well. But can you imagine the battles if there had been no split in the federations? What a spectacle.
I love how Derek got so passionate when talking about Rob Kearney it feels like he gave him back his passion for Strongman. And the Strongman world is all the better for having him involved again. Really interesting guy very open and honest.
@@lucavanantwerpen3752 I heard he fell out big time with Brian Shaw, and was already pretty old when he started. One of my favourites. Successful housebuilding company I believe
Thank you Loz, I have been eagerly waiting for the day Derek was on the show. He was my strongman idol growing up and is who got me interested in competing in strongman. He is the greatest strongman to never win WSM in my opinion.
Thank you so much for this series Loz. You don't know how much this means to so many of us who are missing our gym sessions and the televised competitions. When I saw this was over an hour I knew it was going to deliver but you get so much out of the guys we all idolise just by being yourself and the legend you are.
Another super interview. Over the years, I've come to appreciate what an amazing strongman Derek Pounstone was/is. 2 Arnold wins and 2 seconds, a 1st and 2nd at Fortissimus and a 2nd at Worlds ... not many can match that. I enjoyed Fortissimus
One of my favourite interviews of yours so far. What a nice guy Derek is, and so humble. I’m glad you set him straight Loz when he was saying stuff like “I don’t know why anyone would want to listen to me talking” etc of course we do! You were speaking on behalf of the fans, you did a great job👍🏻 I know there’s still a few on your list to interview, but I think Odd Haugan might be another interesting one to chat to, the oldest competitive Strongman(I believe). I bet he’s got loads of tales to tell!
man, i always wondered what happened to him. i thought for sure Derek was the next Mariusz, and then like that he was gone. respect to him, he was/is still an animal. thank you Big Loz for the greatest strongman podcast in the world!!! excellent content!
Derek Poundstone is truly inspiring. The fact that he mentionned he has learned the hard way, through suffering, really hit me. I can totally relate to him. Really great interview ! Thank you Loz for this ! Take care ! 💪
Derek Poundstone is pure testosterone. A cop and a strongman, two very difficult professions that never get the credit each deserve. His mentality to fight and grind is admirable. Legendary!
Awesome you were able to coordinate this! Poundstone was successful before the strongman social media and UA-cam scene really blew up. It's interesting to hear his perspective in this format. I don't know if this is a good idea or even plausible, but I think it would be cool if you linked videos of you and your guest's lifts and competitions that you talk about during your conversations. I think most of us here love watching the old competitions and seeing you guys in your glory days. Anyway, thanks for sharing your mind with us Loz!
I’d love to hear some of the guys talk more in depth about their training methodology and split, current guys but also old guys that didn’t have access to as much equipment, just to see how they structured their training and where they placed their emphasis.
@Big Loz Official absolutely, I’ve shown this channel to pretty much all my friends to introduce them to strongman and so they can learn more about the sport. Keep up the great work 👍
Loz, outstanding, this interview, wow. I have seen interviews with strongmen. Heck, I’ve seen interviews with Derek. However, this is what I mean when I say you are adding to this sport, because while watching this I realized I’ve never seen this Derek. What you are doing with your understanding and talent is making strongman feel, how do I say this....tangible? Real? Personal, yes I think personal. It’s like Derek is talking to me as he is talking to an equal. What I mean is fans like me can relate to things at a deeper level then how we usually are talked to. He’s talking strongman to me like he’s talking strongman, to a strongman like you. Instead, I guess like strongmen talk to 90lb interviewer after a lift. I hope you understand what I’m trying to say. Keep up the great work.
Thank you buddy. I appreciate it. I guess I know that we are all just human and lifting is just something we do. I’m really glad people are enjoying them.
Great interview, he DOES have to come back for a part 2. Like I thought he opened about many things and I'm glad he looks happy and sounds twice as confident as when he was competing.
This was a great interview. A great show. Fascinating. Great job interviewing Loz. You know when to sit back and let him go, and when to keep him on point. And, you are such a great man you know precisely what to say, and when to ask questions. You have this intuitive sense of your guest, and you knew to let Poundstone get it all out. He wanted to talk! And, I enjoyed it!
That was THE BEST interview you’ve had so far. Thank you for letting Derek talk mostly and guide the conversation, that was really good interview skills there, and Derek was an amazing story teller. Him and Vitautas were incredible talks. I can’t wait to hear some more from Derek and Travis will be another great talk. Thanks Loz!
Man, you speak to everyone from my childhood! Derek was a beast, and looked legit strong. Used to love watching the Americans, Travis Ortmeyer, Mike Burke, Kevin Nee, Mike Jenkins, Derek Poundstone, Nick Best. All beasts.
Met Derek at 2011 giants live London when I was 21 - always been a huge inspiration. Loved his intensity, his strength and had an awesome physique to match!!
As much as he might not like it, the man is a legend. The work ethic he has is absolutely insane. Arnold strongman champion and Fortissimus champion. Great to have his name added to the Cyr stone too.
As LEO he was and is a huge inspiration! Definitely one of the top athletes that inspired me to compete, even later in life. Very relatable (except lifting as much). The reasons he describes his why's is on point! 👊
I loved watching his battles with Marius at Worlds. I always thought he looked every bit as strong as he was, huge traps and shoulders. Fierce competitor. Interesting to hear his points about competing. And so cool to hear how dedicated he is to coaching now. Great ambassador for strength!
Loz I really appreciate all these first class interviews. I have been a major fan of strength sports for 30 years since I was a kid. My only regret is not trying strongman and sticking to powerlifting. I have a solid grip and move well, so after lockdown I'm going to try and have some fun and cross train
I thought Derek was going to bring the title back to the USA after Kaz. However, the way the story plays out with Pfister calling his shot first during the Hercules hold and delivering the title a few years later makes for a epic tale.
It's really informative listening to these interviews and videos, you learn a lot. It probably is weird considering the sport wasn't that big when you started so everything you learnt was from prior athletes
Very cool. Still has that energetic intensity about him. Doing great things with Rob Kearney too. Glad he's still in the mix with it. Valhalla needs all it's greatest warriors present.
Greatest strongman never to be crowned strongest man in th world....u r a great role model for the rest of us Derek thank u all th best for th future my friend
Awesome. Growing up I'd always root for the Europeans over the Americans. Til Derek came along. His pressing really caught my attention, and I was gutted he lost out to Mariusz on the stones at wsm. Such a humble guy too 💪🏼😎👍🏽
Hi Loz, Fascinating video with Derek! Really glad you him on! Definitely get him on again. Derek was definitely a top strongman. Thank you for making the video. Could you get Brian Shaw on. Cheers, Billy
Another true Strongman Legend (such an overused term, but definitely applicable), great interview. Another WSM winner but for a call here or an injury avoided there. Could you imagine being arrested by Officer Poundstone in a pair of tailored shorts? His calves alone would make you submit 🤣
One of my favourites. Always loved watching him compete. The guys build was of legend, he was built like a cartoon character. You can't buy those genetics lol!
I'm really enjoying this channel. It's nice to get an inside look at alot of the former and current competitors. Loz, sorry to keep bugging you about this, but can you get Jouko Ahola in as a guest? He was/is one of my all-time favorite world strongest man winners but rarely ever did an interview.
That last stone he lifted at fortissimus to beat Zydrunas was legendary

Miss those days also
LEGEND. I remember hearing about him before I ever picked up a weight. “World’s Strongest Cop Derek Poundstone deadlifts 800lbs”. Blew me away.
Yeah that was pretty cool. I could imagine him Ronnie Coleman and Shaquille O’Neal all as cops. the three biggest strongest cops of all time.
His name is Poundstone.... he is born for this.
Jimmy White, Margret Court, Tiger Woods. It happens quite a lot.
I love how Derek got so passionate when talking about Rob Kearney it feels like he gave him back his passion for Strongman. And the Strongman world is all the better for having him involved again. Really interesting guy very open and honest.
Rob Kearney what a joke
Legend, legend, legend, for sure Poundstone is a legend. To us weird strength muscle builder power lifting people.
Body upgraders' 💪🏼💪🏼👍🏼
His traps and shoulders inspired me as a child 😂 Definitely A Legend of Iron.
I used to own a muscle and fitness with a real size arm of derek I started olympic lifting because of that

Derek is so humble that he finally agreed to do this , he never brags or bullshits. He was the real deal at those Arnold's.. power personified.

I never knew poundstone was so young when he competed he always looked older back then.
I always reckon they look older than they are. I'm always amazed that I am older than them.
