I can attest to the fact that Magnús loves to find new ways to torture us here in Iceland. I'm still recovering from walking those 20m with the farmers he made last month lol
Would be really neat to hear from Hjalti Árnason. My understanding is that he and JPS were very close. I'm sure he could offer some wonderful insight. Not to mention he has been running Iceland's Strongest Man for a number of years. Would also be nice to hear from Stefan Solvi Peterson, another of those famous Icelanders, too.
The man is a pure winner. Beat bigger, stronger guys repeatedly. Excellent--albeit strict--referee and wonderful with the fans. (Kazmaier could take a cue from Magnus on that score.) Loz, these interviews are terrific...

Any plans to speak with Jan Todd or David Webster one day? David is getting up in their age though. However, would be valuable to have him on record. He's done and seen it all in his day.
You should be able to run like a hare, with a 200 pounds sack of grain , like 200 meters . Or else you are not a fighter. Because that's what it takes in a war-like situation . Not just stand there and go Up , and , (surprisingly) go down. And that's it ?? You don't win a war with that !?
It's cool how Magnus kept on competing for so long in Iceland after retiring from WSM. I think his last strongman comp was the Westfjord Viking 2007 when he tore his bicep.
One of my favorite Strongman moments was at 1989 Pure Strength, which was a team event. Bill Kaz/OD Wilson for the Americans and Magnus/Árnason for Iceland. It's a loading event and OD drops his implement in a difficult to reach spot and has to go down some stairs to fetch it. To buy him time, Kaz tries to shove Magnus into a wall which causes Magnus to drop his implement. It falls onto OD Wilson almost killing him! It's not funny, but it's also hilarious. It's on UA-cam, you can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/gFlr0b7j30c/v-deo.html
Bill Kazmier was a crazy asshole, he literally puts down everyone who isn't him, i used to think he just turned into a bitter older guy but he was a crazy asshole when competing, he used to be an abusive friend to OD, super abusive to literally anyone.

When Zydrunas won with a 360kg deadlift in 2004 it was without straps with a powerlifting bar. I would love if they banned suit and straps in strongman because some of these guys gets ridiculous amounts of weights from figure-8s, suit and deadlift bar. There's a Swedish strongman right now who pulls 400kg equipped but raw without straps his best lift is 300kg.
Yeah I think there's some guys for instance like Thor, where the suit really doesn't make too much difference. After pulling 474kg as a speed rep at the Arnold then 480kg in his gym, both suitless. But then failing a 430kg in the powerlifting meet due to his grip, having said that he only had a short prep. But some other guys seem to really get a lot out of a suit, you see them pull raw and the difference is mental.
Met Magnus at a local contest in Aviano Italy at my first strongman contest. He was super nice and gave most of the amateur competitors advice on all the events as we did them.
@Big Loz Official and yeah, just about anyone else stopping by, I'd love to address a myth that has gone far too long. When people think about Magnus Ver, they think he won 4 WSM titles because of being very smart, very technical and applying great tactics. Yes, check all of those, he really is quite an inteligent man, of course. But people usually forget how gifted he was on a sheer, brute, raw strength level. His deadlift was at least 380, 390 kg (in a time when 410 was WR). His log lift was around 175 kg, in a time when 180 was WR. His squat was easily above 430+ kg. The man had it all, speed, pressing, back and leg power, was the best in the world at stones, car rolling, loading race, etc. People only think he was THAT good because of being smart and technical, as he was smaller than other giants. Thing is: his muscles and tendons were extremely efficient. He could weigh 130 kg, and still outlift 160 kg men easily. Again, not because of technique but because of having really efficient muscles and tendons. I could on about this for days, people think if someone smaller is stronger it must be because of technique. No, someone smaller can be stronger because of muscle efficiency. Magnus was amazing at that.
True, people underrate his static power. In a 100% raw powerlifting meet he would be lifting bigger weights than most guys competing today. And who knows how much he would lift if he was competing today at heavier bodyweight using all this modern equipment to make everything easier.
I second that and being Welsh Garry Taylor was my hero as a kid watching world strongest man at Christmas with my dad. Jamie Reeves and karlsen was up there for me to.
There's nothing like coming home from work to another awesome big loz interview with another one of my all time favourite strongmen. Loz just keeps smashing it.
My favorite strongman of all time. And he always was an entertaining athlete to watch. When he came out and did the Hercules Hold with Kaz recently, I lost it. 😂 Felt like a kid again watching two of my heroes, especially Magnus. That was an electric moment. Thanks for the interview, man. 💪🏼
Magnus is one of my top ranking favs of strong man and I've been watching it from the start.AGuy who set the standard for others to try and emulate and now an ambassador for all aspects of this fantastic sport.
Magnus Ver Magnusson may be the greatest strongman in history. The total package: Static Strength, Intelligence, technique, stamina, speed, endurance, competed in an ultra competitive Era, etc. Legendary.
This is a nice interview. Magnus is awesome. I went to the old Jakabol in 2013 when Magnus was 50. I remember walking in after being given instructions over the phone by Magnus himself. I saw a few giants in there working out to thrash metal music and felt very very intimidated. But they were gentle giants. One of them pointed me in the direction of Magnus's office. Upon seeing Magnus at his desk, I felt like I was dreaming... I thought OMG, that's him!
That Magnus-Megaman "clash" in the 1996 WSM heats... 🤣🤣🤣 That was ALL Megaman's fault due to his shitty, cocky attitude! I remember thinking that at the time, and recently watched it again. Magnus was a total gentleman and very sporting throughout. He even said a few nice words to the camera for Nathan after being slighted by him! It seemed at first like they were buddies having a laugh and joke, but then Nathan snapped and turned sour later on when he lost! It became clear that he was all fine when he was on top of the group with Magnus, but was a horrible sore loser! His true colours surfaced! He lost because of his arrogant attitude, pretty much skipping an event because "his points were fine". He was so cocky and got burned on the log lift for reps, while Magnus just kept his head and humility and ploughed through like a truck. That incident really highlighted a champ vs a chump, and was a great lesson on the kind of attitude and qualities it takes to be a great champion and legend!
Forearms don't get a lot of attention. I don't think people understand how much strength comes from them. Not just grip. It doesn't make sense really. They affect things they honestly shouldn't.
magnus was my eras worlds strongest man ...as a teenager watching him he was almost invincible and so laid back ...he was almost regular sized too if you count 6'3 and 280 as regular lol

I follow those who do compete in it and was amazed to hear that someone apparently pulled a 555kg sitting dead lift. Anyway, thank you for mentioning it as often as you do
Magnus is the reason I started lifting waits and getting into strength training and watching strong man because when I seen him on tv when I was teenager I could not stop watching him and I became a fan and he was my first idol I looked up to
I trained with Magnus back in 2003 in Iceland. It was an amazing experience to learn powerlifting and strongman from him, with his equipment. I think he should have entered UFC 1 though, he might have beaten Royce Gracie.
Thank you. These are so, so good. Seriously awesome athlete; so tough, huge IQ for events and power to match. He made everything look easy- ‘believe me, it’s not easy.’ 90s style contests were the bomb: beaten up cars, stones overhead, flintstone barbells, pole push, tug of war, brick lift... quirky, awesome entertainment. Keep the old legends coming 🙏🙏🙏
Exactly, even if you ain't the strongest man you are the strongest if you have no weaknesses. What's the point of being super strong with squats for example if everywhere else you average. Your going to lose lol
