You were always one of my personal favorites. You helped put the US back on the global strongman map when it had been missing for so many years, and there's always going to be a lot of American strength athletes that appreciate that.
Fan of Poundstone way back when, but didn't follow WSM closely enough in his later career. Thanks for covering him. He always showed a great attitude and sportsmanship.
Awesome video bromley, I grew up watching WSM on tv. But it wasn’t until a few years ago that I learned there are and were tons of different strongman competitions and tons of great competitors I’d never heard of. Thanks for shedding light on this awesome piece of history
Those Met-RX WSM comps were always a fun watch with the family when I was a kid. Of course I rooted for Pudz back in the day, but rewatching them a few years ago gave me an appreciation for Terry Hollands in particular.
Why? Terry was monster of a man who prob was stronger than most of them but had weakest mind. He always quit as soon as pain kicked in and then commentators had to keep making excuses for him and it always cracked me up. UK versions of WSM always hyped him up as threat to Pudz and Big Z yet he never did shit. Imagine if he had mental strength of Novikov or Pudzianowski combined with his physical stature. He would be force to be reckoned with.
Poundstone and Marius are the reasons I always saw strongman as the pinical of strength athletes. Strongman is the highest form of a real test of strength. Nothing else to me is as complete.
The pinnacle looks more like Big Z and Big Brian with people like Halfthor and Eddie in the same vein of athlete IMHO (but Pudz and Poundstone are lighter/leaner/shorter/smaller than those guys too)
@@mcfarvo I agree without question with what you said. But impressionable young me back in the day I was first exposed to Marius and Poundstone and that made me think the sport was so cool. And today I believe the sport of strongman is the best test of strength that we have.
Glad you’re shining some light on Derek. I met him at the Arnold last year, super nice guy. Another person worth making a video about like this is vytautas lalas. Winning the Arnold in 2013 and getting second at WSM behind Z
Thanks for making this video, such an underrated strength athlete. You gave a man his flowers who never would have gotten it to this disagree otherwise.
Great video, i love that period of strongman. The 2008 2009 time was very cool, with old faces on the way out, new ones arriving, the IFSA split ending etc. And the fortissimus shows are some of my favorites ever.
Yep. But if you go back and watch that episode, od was actually a champion in the 400m race in hs or college, so I don’t think it was done to screw him over. Of course he had prob put on over 200 lbs of body weight since he was in track so didn’t go well.
@@brianholland5447 my guy, I hate to be the one to break it to you but wsm has had truck pulls, hammer throws, refrigerators on your back runs, loaded wheel barrow races. It’s not really the worlds strongest man it’s a really strong man with athleticism event. If you want strongest man in 3 lifts choose powerlifting
Had the opportunity to lift with Derek for my 21st birthday. Was the best present I’ve ever gotten. The tips he gave me for deadlifts and squats I still use today. And now I’m squatting near 640, and about to give my first shot at a 800lb deadlift at my next competition. Dudes been an idol to me for over a decade. The best to never win WSM.
Videos like this, clearly made by someone who knows their stuff in strongman, are very useful to those that, like me, never got into the sport when younger, past watching a few shows through happenstance and thinking it was cool. A lot of information and history presented in a professional and enjoyable manner. 👍
Another great video! Love Poundstone and winning Fortissimus and Arnold really cemented his legacy as one of the greats. As an aside… WSM will always be the competition that gets people into the sport and the competition that people in the sport seem to roll their eyes about the most…

Really interesting video, I’d certainly heard of pound stone but mostly knew him from that famous deadlift video and that he was an un crowned WSM, but never knew the details. So this was an extremely interesting watch for me
Man, i STILL watch that youtube video he called the viper to get hyped for big lifting days. Should have mentioned how much her did for charity too! One of the greats!
Great video, DP was awesome to watch back in the day. Such a crazy field of athletes 15 odd years ago, i remember Bergmann always stood out as well, being a bit shorter but such a competitor! I remember Hafthors debut and just thinking WTF!
I was there in West Virginia in 2008 watching these events in person. I couldn't believe how enormous the guys were in person. The atmosphere on the stones between Mariusz and Derek was unreal. I felt terrible for Poundstone, so so close. He was never quite that close to winning again.
honestly, before I watched this if you asked me if Derek Poundstone ever won WSM I would have said “yeah. I can’t remember which year, but he definitely won one.” One of my favorite to do it.
As a fellow Alex from San Diego I appreciate the quality of your videos. You lost me a little when you went after Louis Simmons but your integrity and consistent quality won me back. Great job dude👊👊👊

You and Kaz are why I lift. ❤
You were born for strength, Poundstone.
Poundstone still has the best name of any strongman. Poundstone. *Poundstone* .
Poundstone is a great strongman name but Źydrūnas Savickas just sounds like some mythical Soviet strength beast.

Waiting for Anthony Fuktun to make his debut
This was a bittersweet love letter to Derek Poundstone’s career. Guys like him are sorely missed in Strongman

OD Wilson got robbed via a foot race. He was clearly the strongest at the 1990 WSM.
Imo OD was the person who got robbed the worst at wsm, but poundstone is the strongest man to never win it, he was just in such a competitive era
The way the treated OD is still a stain on the credibility and reputation of that contest and organization.
