    You do understand that every car ever made has a reserve right ? empty on the gauge is not empty in the tank , most cars reserve is at the very least 1 gallon so if your car averages 30 miles per gallon , you will go another 30 miles or so ! the float in your tank does not scrape bottom so yes there is always fuel below the float in the tank , some cars reserve can be 2-3 gallons depending on the shape of the tank itself! also keep in mind running this low on fuel will suck the sediment off the bottom of the tank as well and can cause all kinds of problems including injector issues

      SJC Cobra I drive a 1995 ford taurus and I ran it once on the " reserve " it only made it 2 miles lmfao ... glad I had a longboard atleast to get to a nearby gas station

      my diesel has 1/8 the gauge cut off at the bottom as reserve so it's around 5 gallons. don't forget car makers have to account for the car going up a hill and the fual running from the pump to the other side of the tank.

    • @caliarmyguy
      @caliarmyguy 7 років тому +27

      SJC Cobra Running the car on a low tank will NOT suck sediment off the bottom of the tank. Where do you think the fuel pick up is? At the fucking bottom. It's ALWAYS sucking from the bottom of the tank. Otherwise you'd run out of gas with a full tank. So fucking tired of retards spewing this bullshit.

      This may hold for Fords, but you can't count on it with everything. I used to have a Kawasaki touring bike (yeah, not a car, but whatever) with a mileage calculator. I figured they *had* to build in some slack, so I pushed it once. Wrong! The range hit zero and I lost power within a mile.

      LOL... seriously though, awesome vid, I've been asking myself the same question ever since I got my 2016 Fusion (Hybrid). I was actually so paranoid about running out of gas for a few long trips I had to do (I had to go Atlanta - Connecticut and back several times for a move, then Pittsburgh and back after that) that I bought a gas can specifically for that purpose.
      Some tips though:
      1. Don't keep gas cans in the main car area, you can get poisoned by gasoline leaking (even if you don't smell it) - if you start getting slightly dizzy / blurry eyes / headache, immediately pull over, roll down the windows and get out!
      2. Do not keep gasoline in a plastic gas can for extended duration, gasoline seeps through plastic!
      3. Get a metal(!) "Jerry can" (should be read or green, I prefer red as a sign of flammable / explosive material in it, got mine from Amazon with extra metal spout, don't need the adapter that comes with the car that way, in case it gets damaged / lost).
      4. Do not keep it in your car, not even on the inside of the trunk of your car, for an extended time (for more than a few hours, such as for several days; if you bring it to work and back should be fine, I'd take it out overnight though and keep it outside / garage!) - not sure about the law, but I recommend you get a roof rail and somehow affix it there (securely, obviously!).
      5. If you plan on having the gas in your gas can as a long-time (longer than a month, but don't keep for longer than a year, label it what it was filled!) then get "gasoline stabilizer - I got that from Amazon). I needed to get that, because I keep gasoline in my gas can for months, for my inverter power generator (have lots of power outages here in west-central CT).
      6. Also, for keeping your gas tank with you while driving, be sure to keep it all the way topped off - in case of a crash, gasoline doesn't explode (the gas vapors do), so the more gasoline is in the gas can, the less of a risk of explosion (supposedly, that's what I've read during my research on the matter).

My mom has a 2013 Ford Fusion SE that she drives a lot (to the point where I'd presume she'd worry a little about gas) so I was very intrigued to see how far you could get on 0 to E. Told her how far you got and she was pretty happy to hear that you got to 21 and a half miles! Thanks for this video! It was very informative, not stupid at all!

      Hello By the mechanic took advantage of me. I spent a lot of money on the car plus the towing. I'll never ever let the gas reach the last quarter again. the mechanic told me some gas stations mix gas with water. that how they can get you right.

    • @helloby791
      @helloby791 7 років тому

      +john ayacko sometimes gas stations get water in the tanks when the cap isn't closed right and it rains then that causes running problems all you need is your gas tank drained and usually the gas stations pay for the charge if done by an ASE certified tech.

    you will hurt your fuel pump by doing so. The gas is used to cool the pump. If it goes dry the pump will heat up. It may not happen right away but it's not good.

      @40hours56 7 років тому +3

      I stated that is doesn't happen every time. But during factory you don't have to run the pump long to test it. There are electrical test that can be performed. Also that new car when you get it has some miles on it . what do you think is added to get those few miles on it?

    • @40hours56

      Jesse Mejia oh shit is that really why you misfire. Cause I wait till the last possible moment and then fill up and then out of no where my truck started to misfire so I don't know what happened

    • @fuinharlz
      @fuinharlz 7 років тому +1

      Jesse, the pump can get hurt by running on low fuel or letting the fuel dry out. It'll not happen on some of the first times you run low on gas or empty it, since they'r designed to sometimes work on that condition, exactly to prevent the superheating to happen often or in the first time you run low on gas. But with time, it'll get weaker.
      It already happened on one car I owned. I had this sense on running always with low fuel, just to save a bit of money, and since it was an economic car, I could drive for a long period without to much gas... ended up with the pump stoping working when I was going to a party, and it costed me not just the party, but likelly all the money I "saved" when running with low fuel to replace the pump!
      Nowdays, I always get gas before I get on 1/4 gas tank, to prevent this and other things from happening!

      it's actually not all that bad with a diesel. if you run out one of two annoying headaches.
      first in modern diesels it's less of a problem. turn key and let fuel pump run for a while. sometimes cycling through this several times.
      on an older diesel with a mechanical fuel pump, basically, pray you've really good batteries. the pump only works when the engine is spinning so, lots and lots of cranking.

    I think most car manufactures make it seem like you are completely out of gas when you can still go for another 20-25 miles. It's a safety thing. It's so the driver freaks out when they are coming close to "empty" and they find a gas station with some room for error.

  • @TheOwn3r
    @TheOwn3r 7 років тому +6

    I liked the video. Good test. I'm pretty sure manufacturers deliberately configure the on-board trip computers so that it says there's 0 miles left but there's still 20-30 miles reserve in the tank to get you to the nearest gas station. We did a similar test with a friend's 1998 Peugeot 406 1.8L petrol and we drove around for about 20 miles before we ran out of gas 500 feet from the gas station. Luckily we were able to push the car there and fill it with much needed gas :)
    But it's not advised to make this a permanent practice. All those tiny pieces of dirt that are in a gas tank get sucked in to the engine when you're running on fumes and that could potentially damage your engine. That's the only reason why it said 0 miles on the distance meter so you would fill it up as soon as possible to avoid any costly damages.
    Thumbs up from me.
