@Joey Mitchell and of course in my junior and senior year I had a blue 2014 F150 Limited. Turned out I took the 2018 Limited back because I decided to get a 2019 F150 Platinum with the 3.5L it's because I have horses and I see most equine cowboys driving f150 platinums more than king ranches the 2018 Limited was a little too fancy but I like the 2019-2020 Raptor powered Limiteds alot better. The interior is something to die for on those trucks so by far the F150 Raptor powered Limiteds are my dream trucks And of course my oldest buddy drives a F450 Limited dually. 6'11 22/23 years old like myself he's something else. But I like my platinum it's badass enough for me and it's also blue jeans. So I have a blue platinum now.
@Joey Mitchell but yeah get the 2018-2020 platinum F150s it's totally worth it man. I have high functioning autism and it drives great very easy. It has the 10 speed on any engine available.

On my 2020 I have the 23 gallon tank. I have hit 0 MTE three times. On pourpose (took me a while to work up to it). When I fuel up it cuts off before 22 gallons. Watching this video the reserve capacity is probably 2.5 gallons, in the 23 gallon tank. Which I consider 22 since I don’t ever want to drive on 0 MTE😊

Ran my Ram Ecodiesel once 902 miles on a 26 gal tank. Was $hittn bullets, went to 0 as I drove into a station. Guess I shouldn't have been so stressed.
Best human psychology video on YT. Wonderment , stress, boredom some more stress combined with wonderment, resignation, more stress, final conclusion, AND THEN ... Standing by the side of the highway filling up gas from a slow pouring gasoline can. I'm glad it all went well. Stationary on the side of any road is very dangerous. Daniel Santiago I would imagine the truck is just trying to play tricks on your brain by making it still have a couple gallons left in the tank when it hits 0, so that way people aren't running on fumes for a good while, there's no way it could go that long on fumes, it's a weird thing to do but that's probably what they do.
They do exactly what Weatheronthe8s said. It tricks you because when you are hauling a trailer at the trucks towing capacity you get 2-4 MPG. I am a guy who does long distance vehicle pick ups for a Ford Dealer in Jersey. I have been from Jersey to Boston area and as far south as Virginia to pick up vehicles. My dealership gives me an Exxon card and try finding an Exxon Station in some of these areas. So I really appreciate this video. Well done!
I did this with my then new 2007 F150 Lariat (5.4L V8)... I also made it well past 40 miles... conked out going up hill, near sea level. So I thought I had plenty of margin the day I drove it to zero miles after driving to Albuquerque from Lubbock. Made it maybe 2 miles past zero and it died. Fortunately a gas station was in walking distance... but keep in mind... when driving in mountainous areas, and/or higher elevation - YMMV. :) Side note, my F150 just hit 235,000 miles... and still going strong. Love my F150! Thanks for the vlog!
zip89105 That's what I get in my 2015 Mazda 6 I grand Touring, 2.5 liter I4 dual clutch 180someHP. Is that bad that it's comparable to a 5 liter V8 300someHP truck?
These are really good tests. If you're ever in a tight spot for finding a fuel depot when traveling, you can count on something. I don't know what that something is, but it feels like something good. Thank you for being our "ginny pig". I'll learned something from your video. (Thank you)
That's good to know. Once I hit 0 miles on I-90 between Buffalo and Gillette Wyoming and went about 35 miles on 0. Thank God I made it to Gillette! It was a Chevy Suburban too! In Wyoming there is a town every 100 miles or so!
Just for anyone watching this never do this in a diesel truck because you will make your fuel pump go out cause diesel has alot a bubbles and it'll read empty but there will be 0 gas at all and burn put ur fuel pump
I’ve done it with my 2014 Toyota RAV4. My range hits 0 around 20 miles after my gas light comes on. I did it during the lockdowns because I was waiting for the price of fuel to bottom out during the lockdowns last year. Although I let my car sit for a lot of it and only used it sparingly for 2 months for trips to Office Depot for school supplies. One time I went to get school supplies and my car wouldn’t start in my driveway. It was out of gas at 67 miles after the gas light came on which is the equivalent of 47 miles on 0 range. There was probably also some varnish in the tank from letting my car sit. The furthest I’ve pushed it was 78 miles after the gas light came on (58 miles on 0 range) and second farthest was 74 after the gas light came on when I went 510.3 miles on a single tank driving on flat terrain in New Jersey and Delaware and rolling hills in Pennsylvania
If you have dropped a fuel tank in the last 15 years you will notice there is a bowl around the pump pickup. its purpose is to hold enough fuel to keep the pump cool and lubricated in low level fuel situations. That buffer you used up and miles to empty are a design flaw to keep you from you frying your fuel pump. Not saying your pump in the truck you have is cooked but probably is bruised.Just mentioning I have seen it on early fuel injected engines running a quarter tank weekly pump failures at low mileage. the new fuel systems are returnless relying on the internal relief in the pump to maintain a constant pressure and coupled with the ecm can vary the fuel pump speed. That is what the fuel pump module above the spare tire in the F150 is for. That is why it has a "reserve" of fuel .The amperage and the heat build up from the load the pump experiences. Also for emmisions. The older fuel injection systems had a constant loop system heating the gas above the ambient temperature causing return heated fuel from the engine to return to the gas tank. This causes excessive fuel vapor .The old system had a charcol cannister that was vented to the air. Anyways my point is to consider a quarter tank empty and youre fuel pump will last a lot longer than you own youre vehicle.Sorry pulling wrenches 35 years seen a bit.
I was actually looking into the F350 but I live in California so gas would run me dry. Looked for the regular 5.0 but found a GOOD 5.8 swap, torque converter, new dif, suspension, and a few motor mods and man at a little over 400HP this thing is no joke! As well i only get 12 mpg at most
I did the same thing to my 15’ 2.7 and when mine hit 0. I’ve done your same thing, I managed to get 78 miles when hit 0 and my average MPG was 30.3 The more you’re on the throttle the more it’s gonna consume fuel. You have to be efficient to get accurate results. You were just burning through fuel passing people when you didn’t even have to just stay the same steady speed and maximize the MPG
A few things.. generally the fuel meter is calibrated to a value around the x Liter per 100km value (it is an estimated OEM value). For example, one car model from a certain OEM was calibrated to -20L on "empty" when we set it up. Though, the older the car the more inaccurate the sensor element becomes. Like my current car, 20 years old, I can still drive like 200-250km when the fuel warn lamp goes active.. With moderate driving the average goal is to reach between 50km and 100km which should be plenty to reach the next gas station unless you are in the furthest hinterlands. Next factor is your petrol pump, especially if the car is older they may not empty out the entire tank anymore. And a fair warning, especially if the car is older: if you drive it to empty you risk to get the dirt that may have collected over the years on the bottom pumped into the fuel system. Yes, there is a filter that prevents the engine to get affected (much), but the lines before the filter can become clogged and the lifetime of the filter may be greatly impacted.
I've told all of my customers that "0 miles to empty" in a Ford really means "you have 50 miles to get to a fueling station." I got an F-150 with a 36 gal. tank off the convoy one day that just hit '0'. When I filled it, it only took 33.48 gal. Must've calculated that based on the rating it was getting, it needed 2.52 gal. to go 50 miles.
Your right brother i thought everyone knew that those fuel lights always ment you had 50 miles to get to gas stations otherwise youll run outta gas. now the miles till empty could be the same reasoning or assumption but then why would they have the low fuel light or chime on before the miles to empty. but all in all you generally have 50 miles in most cars when you hit the low fuel light and or 0 miles till empty.
It really disturbs how many moronic drivers, who had all the room and time in the world, didn't move over for you into the left lane when they could clearly see you standing there fueling your truck. The Move Over Law should not just apply to emergency vehicles stopped in the shoulder, but ALL vehicles stopped in the shoulder. It's common sense!
Ford could put the filler neck on the other side! I mean it's no biggy what side it's on when at the gas pump, but if you need to pull over like this and gas up with a jerry can, why can't you stand opposite of traffic when pulled to the shoulder right?
This was hilarious lol.. Your commentary had me rolling for some reason! Man, I have a fx2 Ecoboost and I ran out of gas with 45miles till empty only because it was back in my driveway and its a slant so all the fuel was forward in the tank.
then you shouldn't have ran out, classically the fuel line is in the front of the pump so when its slanted downhill with the nose down it can still drink whatever is in the tank, ive only ever seen a truck fail to start or run out of fuel when it still had some gas in the tank when the grill was at a 60 degree angle higher then the bed
Edward Z Norton my ecoboost has the same issue: when the truck is angled nose-down, my fuel gauge is significantly lower; when the truck is angled ass-down, my fuel gauge is significantly higher
@@mq9047 then someone messed up somewhere, or ford are idiots. In most trucks that's reversed, nose down, fuel gauge higher, ass down fuel gauge lower, I've never personally seen it how your describing it
Most newer vehicles are designed this way. When the gas gauge reads empty, or it tells you "0" miles to empty, it really isn't. There is more like 2-5 gallons left. They do this for a few reasons. To keep the fuel pump cool and lubed with the oil in the gas, even when the gauge reads empty, and to make sure you get gas before the tank is actually empty. The fuel pump and strainer sit on the very bottom of the tank, while the float for the fuel level is about an and inch or two above the bottom of the tank when it is empty. Now, you already mentioned the comments, but it can lead to premature fuel pump failure if you constantly do this, but one time may not hurt anything.
Definitely a stressful situation. After finishing work, dash showed 0 miles to empty and the closest petrol station was 2 miles away. Did a lot of short shifting, coasting and switching the engine off at each stop just to get to the petrol station. NEVER AGAIN.
@JKirkrms6 no, its more fuel efficient to shut your engine off rather than idling it after like 10 seconds of idling. Source: I'm not sure take this with a grain of salt
We took the beartooth highway out of Yellowstone in our F150. We were really nervious when the range kept dropping through the high pass. The range went to 0 about 10 miles outside of Red Lodge. We were happy it was all down hill from there. It seems we were fine based on this video.
That was awesome! Thank you for the boldness to do that, as that experience is very useful! Always wondered about how the distance on empty., thanks again, I'm impressed! 👍
As someone who recently changed out my gas tank in my F150 , going from a 23 gal tank to a 36 gallon, I could of answered this question. I got my tank down to zero and pulled the tank and it still had almost five gallons in it. Which would translate to around 100miles of range on an empty tank in highway driving.
I drove my 2017 3.5 EB 4x4 SCREW with a 36gal tank out of gas this week. Light came on a 50 miles to empty. I drove 53 miles AFTER it hit zero miles to empty before it ran out. Back calculated with my mpg and figure I had 2.66 gallons of gas left at zero. On the next fill, with 3 extra clicks on the pump, the total capacity of my tank and lines is 37.9 gallons *over 800 mile range on highway)
As a 2016 Lariat owner with a 3.5L Ecoboost, may I rain on your parade a little bit here. The "Miles to Empty" reading changes constantly depending on your average mpg per tank. In other words, it adjusts to the style of driving you're doing. City vs Highway, and Tranny Modes (Standard vs Sport mode). So for example, you wouldn't think your range in city driving would be the same as your highway range would you? So as your mpg increases, the "Miles to Empty" (or range) are going to get bigger. When I first got my truck, on a full tank of gas, I was only showing about 297 miles of range, just driving around town. But as I have driven it around 2500 miles or so now, I'm showing around 310 miles range on a full tank. So what you're really showing is that the Miles to Empty display is really not a good indicator as to how much fuel you actually have left. The so-called reserve fuel is probably the same. It's just that your truck's range estimate is wrong. In this case, it was estimating more city miles than highway miles.
Hey Malcom....I was advised by Ford Engineering guys....not sales guys, but people at the engineering center, to get the ecoboost 3.5 if I wanted to tow....not to get the the 5.0 !! Sounds counter-intuitive but it's true. I traded a 5.0 for the ecoboost and it was like night and day towing. I tow a 2017 Ranger 620 with a 250HP motor. About 3,000 pounds.
Wow is all I can say! My 2018 f150 went to 0 km's today and I drove it 5 more kilometers and got gas right away and now I feel like a fool. Great video!
That's about right. In my 3.7 MDX I drove about 110 kms (~70 miles) after "zero" was displayed. I bet it could go further, but I didn't want to run the fuel pump completely dry, so I stopped at a gas station.
The 2018 with the eco boost engine will have approximately 2-3 gallons left when it turns "0". Which essentially gets you about 55miles or so from the moment it goes to zero.... Of course there are several variables such as how you drive and so on. I've tested it with a gas can in the bed until actual run-out 4 or 5 times. The lowest I ever got was 32-36 the highest was almost 60. (About 56-58)
I'm sure others have explained this, but here's a quick explanation: When you're at 0 miles to empty, there is 1 gallon in the reserve tank. In addition, you also have the gas in the lines, which is relatively negligible, and in the engine itself, which is where the "5 liters" comes in. 5 liters is equal to 1.32 gallons. Adding that to the 1 gallon of reserve gives you 2.32 gallons after the car is telling you that you're supposedly out. So if you hit "0 miles to empty" you can rest assured knowing you still have 60+ miles if you drive conservatively.
Do this again in the truck, but set your cruise control at 55mph and just go. Because you will get maximum fuel economy. My buddy's 6.4 hemi when we drive to Missouri, we set the cruise control to 55 over 700 miles and fueled up 2 times. Yet again he has a giant 32 gallon tank to burn through 26mpg worth. On a normal basis the 6.4 gets around 9-10 cause of big tires he has
Well, I guess Ford lives by their slogan "Go Further"! I think the Ford F-150's are one of the toughest and nicest looking trucks out there! Keep up the great work!
you didnt know the power steering would go out?!?!!??! good thing you had pulled over i guess...... how much does this pay? I'm rockin a 1990 Ford truck with 300k mileage, are you hiring?😂
I'm late to this video, but I am glad you made this video. I freaked out when there was no station around in a dark country road and I was in panic mode. But the station was about ten miles and I didn't understand what was going on the truck kept going. Lol. But this video brought me back to it. Thanks for the info.
Legend has it he had an empty jerrycan, and he can still be found driving around North America trying to get it to run out of gas. In 20 years we will still see him driving the highways.......😆👍🏻
so...you're "beeping" out 15:13 ...but not 15:07 ? :D I mean...it's great that you seem to re-watch your videos when editing, shows some passion, but thats a little bit faily ^^
I'm pretty sure the handbook strongly advises again running out of fuel as you can severely damage the catalytic converter. Don't wanna sound like a boring old fart but please don't do this in your AMG when you get. Brilliant channel btw, love it.
Doing some math, there is 2.35 gallons left in the tank at zero. If you drive conservatively you could get around 60 miles!
Nope, thats gallons used. He reset that as soon as he went down to "zero miles until empty" so he used 2.3 gallons of gas after his zero miles to empty warning came on.

Daniel Santiago meh it's really only bad if you try to start the truck after it's ran out of gas.
The fuel in the tank helps cool the fuel pump, if the level gets too low the pump can overheat, shortening its life.
the fuel actually lubricates the fuel pump.

Fortunately a gas station was in walking distance... but keep in mind... when driving in mountainous areas, and/or higher elevation - YMMV. :) Side note, my F150 just hit 235,000 miles... and still going strong. Love my F150! Thanks for the vlog!
Your average mpg is fantastic!
I know !
zip89105 That's what I get in my 2015 Mazda 6 I grand Touring, 2.5 liter I4 dual clutch 180someHP. Is that bad that it's comparable to a 5 liter V8 300someHP truck?
Imagine what your mileage would have been had you kept the truck at a steady 65mph instead of anywhere from 55 to 85.
Too bad it tows less with better mpg
Worried about mpg? Buy a prius 😂
These are really good tests. If you're ever in a tight spot for finding a fuel depot when traveling, you can count on something. I don't know what that something is, but it feels like something good. Thank you for being our "ginny pig". I'll learned something from your video. (Thank you)
The crazy things you'll do for your videos. Good job man, good job! Another reason to love this truck!
You should try to see how many gallons does it takes from completely empty to full
i hace the 36 gallon tank and i have found that when my truck gets down to 40 miles to empty and i fill all the way up it will only take 31 gallons
This kind of video is fun to watch... keep going man!!!
The sounds those cars made when he was refueling
That's good to know. Once I hit 0 miles on I-90 between Buffalo and Gillette Wyoming and went about 35 miles on 0. Thank God I made it to Gillette! It was a Chevy Suburban too! In Wyoming there is a town every 100 miles or so!
lol !
Born in Gillette
Ayyyy #billsmafia
"...and I gotta piss...."
I did.. I think I pissed out the same amount of the reserve tank in the truck haha
auto blog lol
There is a Seinfeld episode where Kremar does the same thing.
ProtoMario why are you here your a pokemon UA-camr
I remember that lol
Top ten anime discoverys
Today we are going wait till we get to zero miles
Fuel pump:😢
I can't believe this was already 2 years ago.
Incredible! i have a 1994 F-150 5.8 so this test would end so fast!
lol..
But yet again, I have dual tanks... If both are empty I'd go nowhere lol
I have the 6.8 v10....
My 94 F350 7.3 IDI turbo has dual tanks as well but these trucks can can be hard to start after air gets in the fuel system from Running out of fuel.
I was actually looking into the F350 but I live in California so gas would run me dry. Looked for the regular 5.0 but found a GOOD 5.8 swap, torque converter, new dif, suspension, and a few motor mods and man at a little over 400HP this thing is no joke! As well i only get 12 mpg at most
i am super !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!impressed you can drive freaking 50 miles in a 5 liter V8.this is insane
Agreed ! I was very surprised !
Joachim Lotz in overdrive, your engine doesn't have to do much.
Increase mpg and lose towing max capacity...
Joachim Lotz
So Ford is going on this ecoboost thing for nothing
Joachim Lotz New technology haha
I did the same thing to my 15’ 2.7 and when mine hit 0. I’ve done your same thing, I managed to get 78 miles when hit 0 and my average MPG was 30.3
The more you’re on the throttle the more it’s gonna consume fuel.
Awesome channel, thank you for trying these experiments in the name of science.
👍🏻👍🏻
In the name of science bs. Nothing like intentionally creating a dangerous situation.
You must not know your father

Wouldn't that hurt the gas pump? almost everytime someone replaces the gas pump in a shop near me is because they ran out of gas 4 or 5 times
It's funny to me how stressed out you get by this
Well if you were driving on empty you would get stressed as well. It's just natural 👍🏼
Definitely a stressful situation. After finishing work, dash showed 0 miles to empty and the closest petrol station was 2 miles away. Did a lot of short shifting, coasting and switching the engine off at each stop just to get to the petrol station. NEVER AGAIN.
@JKirkrms6 Yeah, I was told it used more gas to turn off and turn on your engine than to just sit idle.
@JKirkrms6 no, its more fuel efficient to shut your engine off rather than idling it after like 10 seconds of idling. Source: I'm not sure take this with a grain of salt
@@emil.soderholm no. More wear and tear on the engine starter, and lubrication system...
Very impressive! I love your channel man!
Thank you !
This is a great video to procrastinate sleeping with at 2am
We took the beartooth highway out of Yellowstone in our F150. We were really nervious when the range kept dropping through the high pass. The range went to 0 about 10 miles outside of Red Lodge. We were happy it was all down hill from there. It seems we were fine based on this video.
At least you were smart enough to bring gas with you. Good video.
That was awesome! Thank you for the boldness to do that, as that experience is very useful! Always wondered about how the distance on empty., thanks again, I'm impressed! 👍
👍🏻👍🏻
49.1 mpg ,IT'S A KEEPER 😆😆😆😆😆👍👍👍👍👍
your editing is getting so much better
Thanks :)
I made it to Steubenville from Robinson in my Expedition with a zero to empty. I'm not paying your crazy Pennsylvania prices for gas! Lol
If you want a truck don’t get a eco boost get a 5.0
Malcolm Edgar i guess a lot of people took back the Raptor then... not, but i to have the 5.0 its the sound of natural aspiration
Yeah but wouldn't it showing E on his tank the whole time just still prove him right
Hey Malcom....I was advised by Ford Engineering guys....not sales guys, but people at the engineering center, to get the ecoboost 3.5 if I wanted to tow....not to get the the 5.0 !! Sounds counter-intuitive but it's true. I traded a 5.0 for the ecoboost and it was like night and day towing. I tow a 2017 Ranger 620 with a 250HP motor. About 3,000 pounds.
But zero is zero. None of that matters once you hit zero.
Its called FORD TOUGH for a reason LOL!!!!
👊
XB Mario few days later the fuel pump fails FORD TOUGH LMFAO
AutoVlog did your fuel pump fail days after this experiment? I ask because my mechanic has replaced several fuel pumps on f150's
Good to know - I have a ‘16 XLT 4x4 with the 5.0 with the 36 gal tank, routinely get 1300 km out of a tank. Good truck!
Wow is all I can say! My 2018 f150 went to 0 km's today and I drove it 5 more kilometers and got gas right away and now I feel like a fool. Great video!
16:00 - "Come on, Truck. I love you, but you gotta give up at some point."
Your truck is like the Energizer bunny.
Lin Hunnicutt :D
lol !
+Lin Hunnicutt Yup, it's definitely GAY. But, at least it's not a pink truck. LOL
thanks for the test. good to know. my wife always freaks when I'm on empty. ;)
👍🏻
(About 56-58)
L.M.A.O. 😂😂, that was awesome 👍👏🙌. I enjoy watching your videos🎥.
Thanks :)
Awesome vid. Ford trucks rule! I could feel your apprehension as you went further and further. 🚘
Greg Hamblin dodge is better lol. I'm just messing with you (even though it's true )
toyota rules
Andy S Chevy? Really? I think you need to see a doctor if you like Chevy 🤣
Ford people are reatarded
That's why Ford says "Go further".
I Got the f150 sport super crew 4x4 with the 5.0 it’s awesome just love it.
Pretty sure 5L is the volume of the cylinders in the engine, not how much fuel the engine contains at any given point in time
Do this again in the truck, but set your cruise control at 55mph and just go. Because you will get maximum fuel economy. My buddy's 6.4 hemi when we drive to Missouri, we set the cruise control to 55 over 700 miles and fueled up 2 times. Yet again he has a giant 32 gallon tank to burn through 26mpg worth. On a normal basis the 6.4 gets around 9-10 cause of big tires he has
Thank God it had a V8!
Good result Mike next time will be amg c63 ;-))
lol
I highly doubt Mike would to that test on a brand new AMG C63s ;)
(at least not right away)
218 fuel pumps dont like this video
576 now
This was actually very informative because i drive these at work all day!
as someone who recently bought a Ford your channel is very informative.
Ford "Fuel"150
"cero miles" guy was never taught the letter Z lololol
In my Acura TL ive driven 118 miles once it said 0
Well, I guess Ford lives by their slogan "Go Further"! I think the Ford F-150's are one of the toughest and nicest looking trucks out there! Keep up the great work!
It's the office admission mentioned that when you have gas in the gas can you got to have a long spout otherwise you cannot get it in your tank
you didnt know the power steering would go out?!?!!??! good thing you had pulled over i guess......
how much does this pay? I'm rockin a 1990 Ford truck with 300k mileage, are you hiring?😂
The power steering on these trucks is electric. there is no belt driven pump, it could technically have power steering without the motor running.
enigma9789
so he was uphill and didnt realize that i guess
enigma9789 it kills the power to that pump no matter what,
There is no pump and no hydraulics. Its just an electric motor. Must be to conserve battery.
"I have to piss"...chugs drink lol
18:23 F1 formulas passing by 😀
I'm late to this video, but I am glad you made this video.
In 20 years we will still see him driving the highways.......😆👍🏻
ironically, i watched the ford fusion video last night at like midnight! hahaha. this video is perfect timing.
👍🏻
so...you're "beeping" out 15:13 ...but not 15:07 ? :D
I mean...it's great that you seem to re-watch your videos when editing, shows some passion, but thats a little bit faily ^^
The_Dark_Jumper 😅
I'm pretty sure the handbook strongly advises again running out of fuel as you can severely damage the catalytic converter.
Don't wanna sound like a boring old fart but please don't do this in your AMG when you get.
Brilliant channel btw, love it.
Haha.. I won't ;)
AutoVlog dang i wanted to see the amg test
As a fellow Yinzer, I enjoy recognizing the familiar roadways and backgrounds in your videos. Great stuff!
Bring a few gallons with you....plan ahead
