That was a thing back in the early 2000s you would hop on Yahoo chat rooms I remember and argue with people about what band is metal and what band is metal I remember most people talk about Slayer Pantera Symphony X and all these other bands. You realize not everybody is going to enjoy the same music as you arguing about what band is better that's actually pretty stupid

This ended up way more serious than I expected, but it's a good topic. The extreme metal scene has some real mental health issues running rampant in it. Problem with depression is that, if you have it long enough it becomes ever harder to get out of it. I know that, thanks to the stigma and just general disbelief of people around me when I started to get really depressed, I went around with suicidal thoughts and whatnot for years without treatment.
And thanks to depression and anxiety being the norm for so long, it is now the default setting of my brain. The neural pathways are built in such a way that actually changing it is hard fucking work, and every step forwards can easily be met with two steps backwards due to circumstances completely out of my control. Depression brain is weird...

But I'm not getting better by being a opinionated alpha online and just hiding myself in a proverbial hole IRL. I am my worst self when I'm in those head spaces.
I've been improving because I force myself into uncomfortable situations. As a result I've gotten to be closer with my coworkers who are cool as shit and I'm much further away from suicide than I was a year and a half ago. You don't need therapy to start your road to getting better. You just have to try even when it sucks.

Mostly because I legitimately went through hell with mental illness and hard drug addiction and I don’t like making light of it after barely surviving it myself. I literally spent years having so many panic attacks that my life/ family/ future/ friendships were all on the brink of destruction. Then of course I resorted to self medicating and that brought me down to an even lower more depraved place towards the end when I couldn’t find oxy anymore and started mixing meth and heroin. I wear band tees from bands that were popular 15 years ago, but still kinda obscure (Secret and Whisper for example), so almost no one ever comes up to me and talks to me about my taste in music, but when they do (once every 2 - 5 years) it's always nice 😅

I’d say it’s not that we can’t talk about anything other than metal, it’s just coming across other people that actually love metal too is so rare that it’s refreshing to nerd out on it for a bit.
Solid advice for initiating conversations though, we all could afford to get out of our comfort zones now and again

I got to agree on Metal community being rather toxic. I find it ironic that metalheads love to talk about being a one big family and yet they constantly bicker who is more 'metal'. It is hard for me to say because Metal really helped me when I was at my low point but at the same time, it also held me there longer than it should have. It is like they want you to know it is okay to feel bad but once you decide to get actually healthy they try to drag you back down. That's why Hardcore resonated with me better even though it has it's fair share of problems.

What your advising is basically "be a metalhead, but act like a normie in public". I've tried that for a few years and I'm stil depressed, socially anxious and forever alone. Maybe I didn't try hard enough (as I live in a province full of rich snobs and specific guideliness of acting in public), but I'm still where I was when I had long hair and wore my battle vest to school. And I get your point, don't be annoying about metal to other people, but if metal is one of the only things in life that makes you truly happy, fuck everyone else and what they think. That's what I realized after trying to appeal to people with how I look and dress and act for a few years.

No matter what some sad and angry person in the internet or "in real Life" is saying. I do like Punk, Metal, but also House, Pop and even Classical stuff. My first job where I interacted with someone in a position of authority who was into a more extreme music genre was the chef at the first bussing job I ever had. He realized I was interested in hardcore punk and immediately took me to the restaurant in the lower level of the hotel below us and introduced me to the chef there, Jimmy Gestapo from Murphy's Law. NYC is simultaneously a huge and really tiny city. I remember sitting in the coffee and espresso prep area gossiping about the Harley Flanagan stabbing incident while sneaking hotel happy hour sangria.
