I bought ANOTHER 928 and took it to these guys. What's wrong this time?

- Buchanan Automotive in Sydney are well known as the 'go to' guys for transaxle Porsches like the 928, 944 and 968. Bruce has been working on them since they first arrived, and his son Sean for 23 years since he left school. You could say they know a thing or two and Bruce isn't shy in voicing his opinion. In his own engaging way.
Recently I bought this car at auction and, as usual, it's time to pop in for some basic checks. If you've ever thought about buying a 928 you should watch this.
We appreciate your support. If you enjoyed the video, a LIKE would be much appreciated. Or leave a comment or a question. Thanks for watching.
It's really nice to have instant confidence in the people working on your cars😊
Canucks of the world long for climate that doesn’t dissolve gems of cars like these!
Bucanon senior, what a pleasure to listen to a MAN who QUIETLY deeply knows his work !
Outstanding video! I've been lucky enough to have owned two 928s. First one was a 1991 S4 followed a few years later by a 1993 GTS, both 4-speed autos, loved 'em both. Unfortunately the 20000 mile round trip to have them 'fettled' by these blokes seemed a bit excessive...so it was the local Porsche independent then. Currently hooning around in a 1996 993 Carrera 2 but keeping an eye out for another 928! Will be keeping an eye out for your other vids on these beautiful cars. Cheers from a pom in a rather chilly Otford, Kent, UK.
Thanks Neil. There's a heap of 928 (and 911) content on the channel already, including 17 episodes so far of my heretical 928 EV conversion which is progressing slower than I'd like. Cheers to you too. Don't worry, as I reach for my pullover down here it's getting warmer every day over there.
The “go to” guys for transaxle cars. Always good for a laugh too.😊
0:30 you a true Porsche enthusiast sir, the shirt matching the interior seat pattern is incredible!!
I'm glad Bruce doesnt have a stutter or speak with a drawl. With the knowledge he has and his willingness to share it, you'd be there all day. 😀 👍
Great video thanks
When your mechanic says he’d use it as a daily, you know you have terrific car! And now it’s in terrific hands, well done!
Sadly I live 15k miles away from Buchanon, would love to visit them. Their 928 knowledge is mindblowing. Kudos how your checkered blouse mismatches the pasha😊 Keep it up!
Nice car Stuart. Love the Pasha and the original well maintained interior. Almost Unicorn for its age. Bruce is a real hoot. Whenever I call him I set aside extra, extra time. There is never a quick call with Bruce LOL! Enjoy & Cheers Tony
just want to let you know that i love the channel, ive never been more scared to get a 928
It's a classic and starting to come up in price 😜🏴
Great video, did have to laugh at the contradictions that no torque tube issues with model and tx fluid never goes into the coolant.
Indeed!
Great informative vid with some really knowledgeable 928 specialists. Thanks for the share.
Pasha is just the absolute best ! Love the 928 - well done
Very interesting video about the Fuel system filter. Thank you 🙏🏻 maybe that’s why hesitate to start only after leaving it for a few weeks and not starting it. (got 17,000 miles ) on my 84’ 928 S American spec automatic.
I don’t find fuel consumption a lot at all. I actually would prefer it to use a lot of fuel ⛽️ simply because it’s not my daily driver and sits a lot because we have 12 cars. So when I do take it out, I’d rather to use the old fuel quickly so I can get new fresh fuel into it more often.
very interesting learning about these 928. a guy I work with took me for a drive in his many years ago. he still has it think its only been out of his garage once or twice in 15 years thing looks brand new
Another great video at the Buchanan's, interesting to see how the Yokohamas perform.😀
Beautiful car I remember how great the Mk1 looked at launch like a space ship.
I have a folder of receipts from Bucannon's for the 86.5 928 I am trying to sell for a mate who is transitioning to Aged care. Great work!
Loved my three 928‘s, (two S2 manuals and an S4) Will definitely be back. As for oil, yep you have to use High zinc content. Currently, driving a BMW Z4, which I will definitely be keeping as it will make a fabulous companion to my next 928
I truly enjoyed watching this video. 😊 thank you. It has good info and a couple of good laughs😊
Glad you enjoyed it
good video and banter. I'll have to make point of visiting his shop on my next Sydney layover.
It’s a peach, Stu. Love the updates.
Loved this one and the interaction with the Buchanan’s. Nice buy
Very impressed with the knowledge and love the videos on the 928's. However, I have to mention Sean has the pull ties on his hoodie dangling down into the engine bay. OK with the engine off but would be dangerously close to any belt when the engine is running. Cutting these off or wearing a different fleece or sweater could prevent a nasty injury which could be life changing. Keep safe!
These guys are *amazing*!!!
Poor Bruce and Sean! New owners constantly craving their shared excitement for the latest purchase! But pretty rare to get straight up, particularly for "auction wins" And enough with the 20W/50 angle, has been on the record for decades and for seriously good reason. Think you gave it at least 3 or 4 runs in this vid alone. Btw, the Red 86 Turbo in the workshop background with gen Fuchs caught my eye. Irrespective, best Transaxle workshop and body of knowledge I know of
Outstanding information. Thank you.
Great info thanks for sharing 👍
I had a 1984 Porsche 928 stick shift same color as this car with solid leather seats fast car
Amazing mate
I dont believe the oil brand has been revealed. Made my day.
Yeah it's not an ad, and we don't want to slag off at the new super synthetic oils because in the right car I'm sure they're great. For the record, Bruce for decades used to use Valvoline GP50 20W50, as per the owners manual, but no doubt there were other good mineral oils of the same grade. It was and remains important that the oil has a high ZDDP level, but this is hard to find as the Zinc has adverse affects on catalytic converters and emissions (cat.converters only came into mass usage in the mid 1980s). Hence the ZDDP was phased out or reduced in many oils. That particular formulation is no longer available I believe but BB is clearly happy with the Gulf one shown. And if he's happy that it performs well, then I'm happy. And it wasn't expensive. Also woth commenting that at times Porsche race cars have been sponsored by various oil companies proudly shown on the car's livery, but they were actually running a different brand in the engines.
😂😂….Back in the day when synthetic oil became the rage…I tried in my ‘74 Ford Bronco…and it didn’t take long for all the oil to be pissed out…
First I've heard two blokes bragging over who's is SMALLEST! LOL
.
Indeed. To be clear, and for peeps seeing this comment out of context, we were talking about wheel diameters.🤭🤏🚙
@@inCARnationAustralia LOL. Did you see my other comments regarding rennlist and LandSharksOz? For some reason they are not visible to me.
@@randyvfromtheperch I don't think I did Randy.
I’m looking at an ‘86 928s with 65k miles but low compression on one cylinder (50lbs). Would you guess that this would more likely be an upper end/head issue versus a lower end cylinder issue? I’ll dig deeper but obviously a head removal is a lot less work than pulling the engine.
I wouldn't like to guess - I'm no expert. My first suspicion would be a burned or bent valve. But yes head removal is obviously much less work. 50 lbs is very low - I presume all the others are over 100. Can I suggest you get someone to do a leakdown test to determine whether it's more likely to be a valve seating problem than a rings problem. Also a camera scope to have a look at cylinder walls and valves. So most likely causes - either rings, valves or head gasket. How's the oil and coolant looking too? You really don't want to be doing a bottom end rebuild if you can help it.
@@inCARnationAustralia ok, I appreciate the reply. I haven't actually looked at the car just yet, I was just trying to gather any general opinions beforehand. Yes, I will certainly scope the cylinders and do a leak down test. I appreciate it.
I’m wondering about the oil. With that Gulf 20 w 50 does he think or you the Motul 20 W 50 is the same quality as that Gulf or better? I want to put the absolute best oil in my baby i call Christine. She is bright Red.
I can't speak for Bruce and I know he won't want to go to print making comparisons between brands. But Motul is a quality product. If it's a mineral 20W50 with ZDDP for sure it'll be a good product.
@@inCARnationAustralia great thank you for that information. I just heard that the ZDP eventually clogs up catalytic converters. Doesn’t the 928 have those ? Or maybe it’s just the American delivery ones that came with cats. Perhaps Australian ones didn’t back in 1984 or so.
@@jasonknight5863 I am definitely no authority on this but as I understand it 'clogs up' is probably overstating it. Yes manufacturers reduced it because of the detrimental affect Zinc has on cat converter. But it's not like they suddenly stop working or fail emissions. Yes as you say, early 928s like mine don't have cats but later ones did.
@@jasonknight5863if your car isn't burning any oil then your cats will be fine, or so I'm told anyway. I've been using it for 13 years in my 85 928 and the cat is still good.
Not knowing who/where the heads were fitted it would be worth getting the cam timing checked maybe?
Sensible suggestion thanks. But yes, cam belt timing and belt tension are both OK. Definitely not out by a tooth.
that left front wheel has a huge dent on the inside rim at 6.32
12:00 nightmare fuel. A new fear was uploaded in to me after this. 🎉
Sorry 🥴
Vinyl interior but with leather dash!?
Yes evidently seats retrimmed with "leatherette" vinyl I think, and cloth of course. But dash original leather.
@@inCARnationAustralia Interesting, because I think pasha was paired up with vinyl more than it was leather. That's probably the original specification then.
@@chesswizard31 You're probably right, thanks.
Vot heffer you do, do not mention zer oil!😜🤪😝
Too late John!!
🤣😂😅@@inCARnationAustralia
wanna one one
No such thing as too many 928's... ( nor too many guitars for that matter. )
STU - I HAVE NOT HEARD BACK ON THE EMAIL I SENT YOU WEEKS AGO>
YOU OK MATE?
.
Hey Randy
Not sure what's gone wrong. I sent a couple of replies, from separate email servers as it was clear you didn't get the first one. Maybe please check your spam. Thank you for the list of links, all great resources. Yes I was part of the landsharkoz group when Len Z started it. I appreciate your support and help, and let's try again.
It appears that UA-cam automatically deletes comments that contain links to other websites. if you can provide your email address i can send them that way. I don't se yours listed on your UA-cam channel.
Yes it's there on the channel details. But it's stuartgreaves928 at gmail dot com
@@inCARnationAustralia OK, will send.
@@inCARnationAustralia sent the email. Please respond to it confirming receipt and if you have any questions/comments.
