The mental preparation and positioning is key just as important as physical fitness, got to be able to reax while conquering fear which is the biggest limitation to progress and improvement of skills.
It does feel great when you see that you have made progress. Two years ago, I was a shit rider, now I am comfortable saying I am delightfully mediocre. In two more years, I would like to be decent. I'm in better shape than I ever have been, and every day on two wheels is the best day ever since developing a bit of confidence. Wanting to get better was probably the best thing I ever did, apart from marrying my wife, and having my kid I guess.
Hats off to Barry for keeping riding after his spine injury and adapting to the situation by sitting even when it's not the best and most efficient technique.
Cheers AS. It's actually got me rethinking the standing/sitting thing so I might redo that video soon. I still think it's great to stand as much as possible when learning... but then eventually pick your moments when are equally good at both.
Excellent speaking voice. If yanks wanna think this is monotonous, they can believe whatever they like. Very captivating, soothing and compelling. Obviously wholesome, the material. Smooth, doynomic accent from Down-under. CTE is music.
Man that exercise tip really hit close to home today. While riding today I realized how bad I was out of shape and how much it showed on my riding. I couldn't stand up for as long or hold on as well. This lead to me being less confident and not giving enough throttle, or sitting when I should have been standing which lead to many tip overs.
I've always loved riding in the low revs. And that technique came from upshifting to the highest gear possible as we rode the streets to the trails. We did that as not to annoy the non-riding neighbors
Well done Coxy on the dedication to achieve the goal. I totally agree training is good. I don't know of any training around here so I watch Vids like yours. Thanks Barry...by the way I like your attitude to keep learning no matter your age...Im 53 and not slowing...did my first harescramble the other day and corner speed was vital for good lap times...i will watch your vid on that.
Congrats on your first race! I rode with Coxy last weekend as he's visiting from interstate. He's well beyond me in almost every aspect nowadays, awesome to see how far he's gone since dedicating himself to learning more.
I was about to disagree with low revs but then hearing "untill you are ready to handle them", I instantly started to agree with you. Hearing that gave me flash backs to learning to ride as a kid doing slow cornering from the back wheel making a huge rooster tail and no forward momentum. God I wish video cameras were more portable and affordable back then so I could rewatch my embarrassing moments hahaha
Great video Barry! If an 'average' rider retains only one thing from this video it is to STAND UP when riding. Your clip of sitting vs. standing couldn't have illustrated it better. Oh, and get a trials bike!!
0:59 i love my new Austrian pretender 23 EC300 hahaha, Been watching your vids for a while now, Thanks for the awesome riding development vids and jokes along the way!
The point is always trying to improve. Even if you ride just for fun, riding becomes boring if you keep stucked in the same mistakes and doest develop new skills. Once you achieve a new goal, gets more and more exciting. I really hope your spine gets well Barry, take care!
Thanks Maurice! It's pretty good now. I can handle long rides now as long as I don't do much bike lifting and keep good posture. A good outcome compared to the alternative!
Wayne, Coxy owes you a beer! [I just sub'd to his channel thanks to your 'outro'] 🤘😂 We've talked about your Canadian trips - I was saying that I'm in NY right across Lake Ontario.. So from the vid[s] from back then until' now . . Wow! Coxy sure made a hell of a lot of progress, and You Nailed It.. For that to happen, you Must Keep Practicing The Techniques.. [They're like 'muscle-memory'] And as for eating decently & exercising - As an ex Dirt/Ramp/Street BMXer, I couldn't agree more! 🙂👍 Sam -
it's always a pleasure see your videos guys! but why don't you make some teaching-video for rider with 4stroke? :-) I see your videos where almost they have 2strokes so it culd be fantastic get same learnig video (log, pivot, ect ). Fro example I have a Ktm 350 Exc and to pass slowly a log like tree on the ground I don't know exactley if is better use 1 or 2 gear with 4stroke :-))...thanks!
Unfortunately four strokes would be constantly overheating on our typical rides, Mark. And stalling a lot. And taking a fair bit more energy due to the top heavy weight etc. Our focus is hard enduro so we'd only be making it hard on ourselves with bikes less suited.
@@crosstrainingenduro you’re right. the 2stroke is better for extreme but the 350 is the main enduro bike for many enduro riders in my country who prefer get a bike for a great range of use but anyway some yours tech skill videos are perfect also for 4stroke 😃
How much alcohol should I drink and how much weed should I smoke before / during / after the ride? what do you recommend? Currently I’m on a two beer to toke regiment but if you have other suggestions I’m all ears 👂 🙃
2 beers and as many Billy's as you can and you will be sweet and feel nice and loose 😂 anymore beers and it starts to get dangerous only because you start pushing it abit to hard and you will notice if your to busted up when at high speed everything looks like a blur 😂
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast! This is 100% Jarvis. Applies to all manner of technical activities. Feels way better to be in 100% control but slow and deliberate than flat out and all over the shop hoping dumb luck will get you through. If you can nail it perfectly at a slow controlled pace, speed will come naturally. Maybe you can do a video on pacing. Ever notice a lot of people don't warm up on a bike, just tear off like demons at the start of the day but typically slow right down after 15 min lol
That can be the advantage of a good coaching session... they pick up the wrong techniques that you may not see yourself when riding. But generally I think you can still learn a lot from vids.
@@crosstrainingenduro the rubber feet on the KTM kickstands kinda swivels, but it only really works on harder surfaces. Other times I can see the aluminum arm flex a little.
My biggest escuse for getting a bike is to have fun, but secretly, deep down i want to be a bad ass rider who can flow effortlessly through the forest, over any obstacle, turn on a dime and climb any hill
Hard to say, Ryan. So many variables. But yes, as the engine gets smaller you'll find less advantage of riding in a higher gear as there's very little power at low revs.
Yes, we aren't keen to promote GasGas now that it's part of the Austrian monopoloy lol. As you probably know, the old GasGas models have continued under the Rieju brand.
