The 1990s Mazda RX-7 "FD" is rapidly becoming valuable. I'm reviewing this 1994 Mazda RX-7 R2 to see why the FD RX-7 is becoming so expensive -- and to find out why the 1990s Mazda RX-7 is such a good investment.

DOUGSCORE SPREADSHEET: docs.google.co...
Certainly one of the best looking cars from the 1990s.
And one of the most beautiful cars to ever come out of Japan...
Question?
Don't forget the Nsx cmon 1
Best looking period in 90
I think the nsx looks a bit better. Could be because my dad had an rx7 and it was in the shop more than the garage when i was a kid so i might be biased. Also never been a big fan of bubbly body work. Regardless, the rx7 did rounded edges right.
Mazda: Makes their logo spell M so it stays in people's heads.
Doug: The Vee-thing.
Damn. Never thought of that. And i have 4 mazdas
@@TheAdatto lmaoo... they haven't succeeded it seems.
That generation Mazda logo was intended to represent the eternal peace flame at the Peace Park in Hiroshima, Japan (Mazda's Worldwide HQ). I have made a study of Mazda history was unaware of the triangular logo in Doug's review. However the flame logo was replaced soon after by the familiar stylized 'M' logo we know now.
I think it's sopost to be a seagull but not sure
@@GabrTM It's an "M"
He says “Rotary” one time in this whole video...
In an RX-7 video
*Wankel engine...*
Actually 2 times 9:18 15:02
More importantly he rates a Pontiac Aztec as having a higher “importance” than a fd rx-7 the Pontiac comes in at a (7) and the fd gets a (6)..........wtf🤯
You can see this when you pause it on his “doug score” how the hell can a Pontiac Aztec be more important than a fd rx-7 I want him to retract this and make the appropriate changes
@Isaac Rodriguez *Its a moot point really, they were both hideously fugly and commercial sales flops... both cars were failures and no longer made. Both brands no longer exist, the GM's Pontiac and Mazda's RX brands were permanently discontinued.*
I love that the RX-7 and the Supra both have cockpit-like driver seats.
the 300zx also has a cockpit. i owned one
same with an acura rsx
@@raptorsaurus-agario1045 RSX is underrated, my dad still has a Type S RSX
@@raptorsaurus-agario1045 @seven Neither the RSX nor the 300ZX had what you would call cockpit-like interiors. The RX-7 & Supra were the only ones to have it, where the whole console is angled towards the driver and wraps around you from left to right. The 300ZX was evenly pointed at both driver and passenger, the RSX had some bits pointing to the driver but it didn't wrap all around you like the FD and the Supra.
And s2k
"Then only disappointment I have driving this car is I can't look at it" lol I agree

That’s also what they used to say about the E type Jag
"... so styling gets a one out of ten."
Hello
u so pretty lauren omg
you forgot to show us the nitrous bottles under the passenger seat.
=)))
That’s a limited edition RX7. You have to be careful tho... it can leave skid marks on your face!
Kurtiskurtical I was just talking..
LOL!
oof
The overheat exhaust system was really to let you know not to park over dry, grassy areas...as those areas could (and did) catch on fire if you idled your RX-7 over them.
I remember rally cars being totalled for this very reason when plumbed-in fire extinguishers first appeared and they didn't see the need to carry a hand-held one too.
Buck Winters really?
@@myownsummrr I had one of these. The parking over grass thing is true.
And here I thought it was to tell you to slow down to double digit speeds.
Buck - Actually the heat sensor only detects when the pre-cat gets too hot, not the entire exhaust system. The purpose of the pre-cat is to help heat up the main cat quicker so that it can start working a bit sooner after first starting up a cold engine. The problem is the damn thing could sometimes get red hot and often in as little as 30,000 miles the core would fuse into a solid mass choking off the exhaust system and robbing the car of all its power. This is why most RX7 owner, myself included, either gut the precat or replace it with a down pipe. And once you do this that light will never come on again because you will no longer have such extreme temperatures in that area. Anyway you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that its bad to have a red hot hunk of metal about two inches from your passengers left foot (also where the sensor is). And of course letting it get red hot leads to the core melting problem I mentioned above. I can’t really say if the engineers at Mazda were thinking about the dangers of parking in tall dry grass when they put in that heat sensor but I’m sure they may have been considering the possibility of some sort of fire.
The exhaust overheat warning is because the cat. caused some fires when the car was parked in dry brush.
What you do if it comes on is ensure you're not parked over any flammable materials such as dry leaves.
The headlight pop-up button is so you can clean the headlights, or if the motor breaks you can put them up manually and flip the button so they don't retract until you get the problem fixed.
I had a '95 and ripped out the crummy Bose sound system. The supposed subwoofer was horrible & took up about 1/3 of the trunk. I notice your test car didn't have one, either.
The car was fast and handled and stopped wonderfully on Texas ranch roads. I had the car up to 150 mph on Interstate 35. I ran out of guts before it did, though I felt stable and safe at that speed. It was definitely a date-melter!
Hahaha would have been great to see him review the version with the Bose acoustic submarine tubes 😂😂😂 that was def a cool/weird quirk. Man.. if have to disagree though, those things sounded amazing and produced more hard clean bass than probably any car of its time. I LOVED them. The tubes only came standard in certain models though, not all trims. Either Touring models only or whoever ordered them as an option, not sure, but they had 3 different audio trims.
Don't expect Doug to know anything about any car.
As I recall, rotary engines get quite a bit hotter than traditional pistons. Not sure if it's the nature of the rotary, or if it's the higher RPMs they can withstand (maybe both lol), but my friend used to have one of the older models and had caused one or two (thankfully) small brushfires.
@@benreed011 Yes, they are basically two-stroke engines each bank equal to three cylinders.
The exhaust overheat warning light wasn't a new feature in 90's RX7's.
I had it pop up several times in my 85' GS (FB). The warning was integrated among the row of idiot lights in the gauge cluster.
Hey Mazda....MAKE COOL SHIT AGAIN
Toyota too... Supra, MR2, Celica, ugh it all went wrong after the 90s.
Brenden Freeman I need daihatsu to come back.
The new MX-5 looks cool.
Mitsubishi is dead.
+Freak Nasty They are nice but they need 20-40 hp really
The pop up light feature was for snow conditions...your lights didn't get stuck down under snow/ice.
And so you could wash them
Also exists on the NA Miata and the Ford Probe.
Also the Mk3 Supra has the headlights up without being on feature, I use it to clean them since I don't get snow.
I do this for my mx5 or for other various reasons. Otherwise lights stay down during the day
Or to wave at fellow pop up owners
I think having the storage compartments is more practical than having useless tiny back seats.
The 2nd-generation RX-7 had these storage compartments, too (except the foolish 2+2s). Great place to store items if you were parked in a sketchy neighborhood, especially if you didn't have the hatch privacy insert.
I really don't get the back seat on sport cars there is room to no one
The rear "seats" are for insurance purposes, they save the purchaser a good deal of money. Most owners simply use them as cargo shelves.
paul pimpin same
True. I had s crx with the Japanese back seats. I thought it was cool but quickly realized i would rather have my storage space back. I did stuff ppl back there a few times and it was horrible lol

The overall styling is brilliant. Beautifully clean. I think it's one of the best looking cars of all time.

The RX-7 was so much better looking than the RX-8.
The MX-5 is a much more successful product. I don't see the RX-7 coming back anytime soon.
@@YTRulesFromNM I'll stick to RX-7 because it's more exotic and hard to find. I personally would not want them to try and bring it back.
@@keelyleilani1326 no, MX5 is a revival of the traditional British sports car. Small, light, 2 seater roadster, etc. The RX7 could come back but it won't have a rotary and wont look as good. Pretty sure they'd just make the RX9 and make it compete against the GTR.
The rx8 is a nice can but the rx7 is truly beautiful 😆
The RX-8 is to the RX-7 like what the MR-S Spyder is to the MR-2.
The pop-up headlight feature is to leave them up in the wintertime so they don't stay frozen shut. Other cars had this Doug. I'm surprised you did not know this.
You beat me to it. I had an 83 Supra and the lights were up all winter.
Same with the 240sx
Miatas had it as well
My nsx has this feature as well
That's odd because Porsche don't have this feature on the 944/924 series of cars with pop up headlamps. They just designed the system with a motor and mechanism strong enough to break any ice the car was likely to collect when parked.

thats is a gorgeous looking car.. so clean in its styling, no fake vents or weird sculptured lines, just
pure function..definitely a classic example of a true vintage sports car
Headlights go up without turning on so that in places where it snows or freezing rain you leave the headlights up so that they don't freeze in the down position and then no headlights.
M C you got it. Mr2, miata, etc has the same function
It's also for BulB ReplacemenT........
My '90 Mitsubishi Eclipse did it, too. I'm curious if there's a pop-up headlight car out there that didn't have that feature.
a27rocks ford probe has no button. Gotta Unhook the negative terminal while the light is up
Leave it to Ford, I guess.
That spare tyre has better rims than the original imo
Haha I noticed that too! The Old Mazdas have iconic rims but the RX7 really looks great with a modern set of 5 or 6 spokes.
Mazda should seriously just bring this design back
PB S agreed
Mid engine 2.5 with bearing turbo at the tailpipe. 300k mile lifespan exotic for 35k. Put kodo frontend, tiny bright taillights. Done.
If they did, I wish there would be a body style with pop-up headlights but of course stupid pedestrians are of higher priority lmao
2009 RX8 Is one hell of a car. In countries like Greece and Turkey there are huge teams using it. But its poor fuel economy is the main reason it never surpassed the 7.
No stock Mazda has even been close to 200mph. The RB land speed FD was not a "Mazda" car any more than any other hopped up aftermarket car. The FD was a great car in its particular ways but it never was and never would have been anything close to a Bugatti. Nor should it have been.
Definitely one of the most beautiful cars of all time. 255hp is a great number, even for today's standards. 200hp would've been adequate for this car.
I feel like 255 was part of the reason they didn’t last forever. I used to be really interested in Wankel engines but got burned out
I'm not even a huge JDM fan, but the FD RX-7 is easily one of the most beautiful exterior designs ever.

Id say Integras had it worse.
Had my Integra broken into about a month after buying it living in a very quiet neighbourhood in Australia where car thefts are far from a hugely common issue.
So yeah, can confirm EVERYONE tries to steal Integras. You can also get into them with nothing but a screwdriver, the only thing that saves it from being stolen in a single minute is the immobiliser so do not park them somewhere where they can be towed or pushed down the road.

@@IGamingStation thats very incorrect lol, modern cars past 2012 are very easy to distinguish compared to the 1999 to 2010 era where cars were literal carbon copies of each other. Not to mention how factories were pumping out one companies cars out one end and another out the other end.
@@IGamingStation cap
@@IGamingStation The market. In the 80s/90s the market and economy were really good. Big tech and automobile boom. Car makers had multiple sports cars for all price ranges, and especially: coupes. Coupes aren’t so popular now because people don’t have as much money for even a cheap sport coupe, would rather make the possibly single car they can afford one that can carry their family. Even if they can afford two their spouse may need their own. SUVs are unfortunately all the rage. There are *less* sports cars to choose from, they don’t make new and varied platforms as often either. Hence why the Nissan Z has looked the same 2003-2020. Challengers, camaros etc. manufacturers are not confident.

Gives styling a 10 for a 90s Japanese sports car, importance a 6....okay Doug
PalaczT it's his opinion. You don't have to agree with it. Appreciate the car for what it is, regardless of what he says.
I agree with the importance. The car is iconic. I used to own one and I daily drove it for several years. If you don't beat the crap out of them they are amazing cars. When it comes to tuner cars, the FD Rx-7 and the Supra are the most important cars that exist. They are legends. I also think he under appreciates how well the car drives. The shifting, the clutch depth, steering weight, everything on that car was perfect. It was a true drivers car.
I think he rates the car to low in some categories. Acceleration of 5sec for a 1995 car is worth at least a 7 and maybe an 8. Agree with styling, a 9 or 10. You have to give it point for uniqueness too. It seems like the rest he is comparing to current cars. I had a 1995 Mx6 and it is one of my favorite cars I have owned. It had similar styling and features.
I was totally in love with this car’s looks back in 93’ (and still love it). Although, the early versions did not have a fin on the back which actually looked even better. It's where you take out an engine such as the Wankel rotary used by many Mazdas and replace it with a Chevy LS engine.
joecugo
*correction, all RX8s should be LS swapped, the Renesis motor sucked donkey balls and tarnishes the otherwise great chassis of the car.
My Rx7 set the ground underneath on fire. The exhaust, and its "thermal reactor" can get ridiculously hot. A stretch of the exhaust was glowing red. Thats when the ivy underneath burst into flames. Rotaries can put out some heat! Sharp looking car though. And if you like engines, and mechanics, a rotary engine is totally fascinating; A dead end , as far as engine evolution, but really cool.
31k miles? About time for the first engine replacement.
Worst thing one can do to an RX7 is to swap the engine for a V8 or something else imo
I drove an 86 rx7 246k miles on the original drive train and it was still going strong when I gave it to our gardener. All of the switches broke, the electronic heater control quit then the replacement quit, but the engine and auto tranny never needed any work other than new fuel pulsation damper, new oil injector tubes, rubber o-rings behind the oil filter adapter and brakes, hoses and struts.
I want somebody to talk about me the way Doug talks about the Mazda RX-7.

You can raise the pop-up headlights without turning them on in case of inclement weather. That way the lights wouldn't be stuck in the down position if the car was covered in snow or ice.
(At least that's what the salesman told me when I bought my 87 Integra with the same feature.)
I drove one of these beauties once in my lifetime when I was a valet attendant. It was red with beige leather seats all stock and in mint condition. The fact that it's a very rare car, e I complemented the owner and we had a chit chat for a few minutes about it. This was back in 2008. It was an automatic but it didn't matter because these cars even back 11 years ago were rare to see on the streets. Most of my co workers probably had no clue what this was back then. But 90s Japanese cars have always been my thing. And I think that's why the owner was very charismatic and nice and even talkative to me because I instantly complimented him on his ride. And it was an elder gentlemen. He was a man who was intro his Rx7 FD and made sure of it.

The pop up headlight button without turning on the lights is for leaving the headlights up in the event of ice or snow. That way, overnight, your car's headlights aren't stuck closed. Come on Doug...you're from the north east. You should know this.
Dolphins101 that's what I thought when he said that smart on mazda's part
Ty for that
When a doritos add launches before the rx7 video 😂😂

1:03 The sound of Doug's mom getting a Doug score
The switch to pop up the headlights is so that during the day you can flash the lights to get people to get out of the fast lane and move over......actually super helpful.
My friend just imported one of these with only 8000miles. It’s insane
I live in New Zealand, dumbass.
computer man Mazda produced the fd generation from 1992-2002 in Japan, so you CAN import a 1992 fd right now. You sir are a total idiot.
I love when americans assume everyone is american too
computer man Lmaooooo dumbass
What a backfire!
Why are you lying, Doug?
We all know that the Suzuki Swift is the best looking Japanese sportscar from the '90s.
Keep the JDM's coming, baby!
Brian Ruiz he should do a Nissan Z32
It's not a jdm
Luis O no but you are. this is a usdm model,a jdm means an import sold in Japan...
Luis O noob
Luis O JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market. This specific car was sold in America for the American market, making it USDM. If it was sold in Japan it’d be a JDM.
Amazing how the 94 RX7 had better styling than the newer RX8. 94 was the first year many car makers started going from boxy to sleek again. 94 3000GT was the same.
You're correct in that '94 was the first year for the 2nd gen 3000GT, but I fail to see how it went from boxy to swoopy......
The design differences from the FC to the FD are extremely dramatic because it was very different structurally from the FC in addition to needing that 'updated 90s look.' The FC hit the USDM for MY 1985 and thus sported the boxy 80s architecture whereas the 3S debuted for the '91 MY. Huge differences in styling from 1985 to 1991.
I once met a graphic designer who described this car as "how a car designer in the 1950s would envision the future of sports-cars in the 1990s". He loved the design and meant that in the best possible sense (a timeless classic). I thought it was a poetic description.
Nice comments☺
Doug is the type of guy who would like to speak to your manager
Makes no sense
FireBlade Doug on his alternate account?
I just realized Doug looks like a young Jay Leno with a short chin... he even talks like him a little
i know right!? i thought i was the only one to notice
Thank you! Some of his mannerisms are so similar.
literally scrolling through comments looking for one like this haha 😆
"Why does it have a button to pop up the headlights without turning them on"
My head:
POP POP POP POP UP UP AND DOWN HEADLIGHTS!!
When I was younger in in like 2001 I remember drooling over those RX-7, they were only 12 000-13 000$ back then...too bad I had no money.
well what rx7 that needs rebuild every week? oh yeah fat americans that overreved the engine because they can't operate the manual transmission right
No sh*t, even back then half of them had rebuilt/new engines in it.
doug i think there's something wrong with your polar bear
it's nose looks a little dry
Ryukachoo No, that was an east African polar bear mating call.
crutksdub wtf?
crutksdub It's all right mate.😂
Check my more than trash videos so I can raise money to help doug get a column on autotrader... wait
Global warming no doubt. Poor bear s moving to Doug's place. His spooky basement man and bear cave.
Damn straight on the 10/10 for styling. I remember walking down a street one day and first seeing an FD RX-7 parked there (this was pre-internet so I had no idea the FD even existed). Totally floored me.
Doug the type of guy to rate a chevy bolt higher than a ferrari
I'm all for modifying cars, but FDs are so great stock. Go drive a stock one. It's an experience. It's nice to see preserved ones like this.
This guy has got to be Jay Leno's long lost son.
I was just about to post the same general comment! He has to be!!
Iron Ridge Outdoors he even has his goofy and corny sense of humor.
Considering Jay thinks 1932 and 1962 are the greatest years in automotive history, and Doug thinks anything that isnt a FIAT or a modern car with an "infotainment center" is the worst thing ever, I must disagree.
close your eyes and listen to his voice, especially when he gets excited, sounds just like him
Hotblack Desiato you dont know doug then
Mazda has proved that they have some beautiful modern styling these days. They just need to bring back a true successor to the FD RX7 that does everything the old one did so well: simple, lightweight, handles/feels like nothing else to drive: everything a car should be
YEAH FINALLY THIS VIDEO
TecnoSpam This us definitely going to be trending and get 2M+ views

Get yourself an old cop car.
Bitches love cop cars.
Joey Cap hmm, im thinking of selling my 07 accord for an sti legacy... go for it. Be young and dumv
How does it only get a 6 out of 10 for importance? The RX-7 is a completely unique car in terms of looks and the fact it was the ONLY car with a rotary engine. Sheer mention of an RX-7 gets everyone i know excited beyond belief.. the RX-7 is a legendary car.
Review the supra
TheRealBRUH please
Quick review of the Mk4 Supra: overplayed, overweight, and overpriced.
Supra fanboys will hate me for saying that. Lol
Big 'ol Booty Cheeks JDM models are the way to go
Roddy Dykes for the Supras? God yes! My good friend has wanted an MK4 for years. And I've been telling him to just hang on and find a RHD car that hasn't been fucked by the US market. Bit even in Japan, they're going up. 5 years ago a clean one would sell for $20k. Same kinda car now is going for $30k+. I'm happy I'm an rx7 guy. I have my connections for FDs on the cheap still. Kinda gave up on an r32 GTR. Ran into a guy 2 years ago that imported a 20b Cosmo and an r32 GTR, he paid $18k for both cars, total... Cosmo sold over the summer for $20k, and I don't think you can get an r32 GTR for under $20k now either. The Cosmo had a D code 20b in it with 30,000km on it. I was pretty upset when it sold, cause I REALLY wanted that car. The 20b I owned was a disaster. I would have paid $20k for a JC Cosmo with a motor that had under 20k miles on the motor. C and D code is where it's at too. No code, A and B for N/A, C or D code for big boost power
Holy lord please
