This has been eating at me since I first learned the new movies' plot, but I can't imagine that there is any MK fan in the world who actually wants to see a completely original character, some random UFC fighter, as the main focus of the movie instead of Liu Kang. If you're seeing an MK movie, you more than likely already know the plot of the franchise. You don't need some surrogate to have everything explained to him on your behalf.
Yes but the 2nd film was so bad and barely followed the plot of the 2nd game it was more based on the 3rd game especially since a few MK3 characters Sindel Cyrex/Seckor ARE in that film.
@Veghesther it was really bad, to be sure. But at least the screenwriters had a basic grasp of the plot of the game. The new writers I can imagine just sat around pouting about how they hated having to work on a video game movie, and just picked characters a random with zero interest in remaining faithful to canon. Yeah, I hate that in the original Scorpion and Sub-Zero were just henchmen for Shang Tsung. But the characters in the new film just like a never ending series of insults.
you know, now that I've thought about it for a week, Tom Cruise isn't that crazy of an idea. True, he wasn't yet a mega action star. But ever since Risky Business, ray*bans have been part of his signature look. And what is Johnny Cage's most famous accessory? His $500 sunglasses (asshole).

It's my childhood movie. It means to me what Goonies probably ment to the 80s kids :) I used to love it, and I still like it very much. Besides the fact CGI effects aged poorly, the movie holds up very well. It has a simple, and as old as the hills plot and character archetypes, but due to the great cast, good direction and fight choreography, great atmopshere and score, and an amazing soundtrack, the movie is still very enjoyable!
Often overlooked Mortal Kombat film and James Bond film connection: the islands used for Mortal Kombat are the same islands used for the villain's lair in "The Man With The Golden Gun."

I remember my cousins and I really liking the American ninja movies and had always hoped he would get his own American Ninja movie. Maybe Joe trained him and commissioned him to be a ninja. Sadly we never got that. Thankfully he did do a pretty cool movie where he takes on the KKK and him and Dudikoff did another movie as well where they take on some crazy human hunters.
I’m honestly surprised he didn’t mention how the actor who played Shang Tsung in the movie would later go on to reprise his role in Mortal Kombat 11. Tbh I think he does a much better job portraying Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 11 a lot more than he did in the movie.
I actually think the rating was a good idea, especially for kids like me who's parents were too strict to let us play the game, but were ok with letting us see the movie. Also; the cartoon was great! And yes, Goro was a triumph of animatronics, and is still amazing!
In the film's official magazine, it is stated that Shang wanted to make Sonya his queen once Earthrealm was conquered, revealing that he was in love with her after all.
Also agree. It had a bunch of problems, but it had moments where you could see they were trying to make a good show. It also helps that they cast very attractive actresses (look at the IMDB listing), and even had taekwando Olympic gold medalist Dana Hee for a side character (and as part of the stunt team).

How did you overlook that this movie permanently changed Kano's origin thanks to Trevor Goddard's performance? Originally described as being Japanese-American but not one of the more popular characters this wasn't really explored. Goddard, an English actor, tried to play him with a cockney accent but it came across as Australian so they ran with it and every iteration of the character since has been Australian. How would you miss something Australian?
Still wondering if the pharmacist from Superstore can make a believable Kano. The actor is from Queensland, Australia, but he doesn't look buff enough. I get a Conan O'Brien vibe from his looks. He's not tiny, but from what I've seen, he didn't work the arms/chest out enough. If his acting chops are great, hopefully he'll pull it off.
Thank you for posting this!!! I remember seeing this when I was kid when it first came out and I was hooked for life at age 10. Yes, I liked this movie, but like Paul WS Anderson’s adaptation of Alien vs.Predator are proof trying to force PG-13 rating on gory source material makes a harsh compromise. You know, before he turned to making endless Resident Evil movies to keep his wife happy.
Well, there is gore and death in the film. That man shatters into gore, and Scorpion has his chunks, and human hand, fly everywhere. Plus, MK1 was more tame, and PG13 is meant to be the legacy of PG, before 1984. Just look at the recent bond films. Even MK could do more, with said rating. Most films that inspired and shocked kids were PG, because you're aloud admission, yet the severity may be what you find in an R film. It is about what TV14 can do. This all more mimics MK being in pizzahuts and family restaurants. R, the bigger part of the audience would feel like they snuck in, or found their father's stash of something. I say it's best done via story atmosphere, with just shocking mements, like in Indy. The film is the only one that feels like its inspirations, feeling like a tough, genuine action film, with the fantasy stuff giving off a dark fantasy film tone, the whole thing being more like a before 1984 dark fantasy film with some dark fantasy film shocking mements.
Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion in Hell would've fit just fine in an R-rated film. The soundtrack certainly feels like it's from a mature film as several songs have f-bombs, plus there's Death Metal. What PG-13 movie today would have Death Metal? Damn, the 90s were cool!
I think having no massive superstars is what makes it so great. Jcvd would of had to have more screen time etc so it might not have been as good...I remember the video store wouldn't sell it to my mam even though we rented every week haha. I ended up buying a mortal kombat series and swapping the tapes! Genius 10 year old
So glad they decided to keep the Reptile scene. As cheesy as the CGI was, the fight scene was awesome, especially paired with that music. The Scorpion/Cage scene was cool too, with the Fear Factory song.
Nice job minty as always just one thing scorpion not Scorpio but another little fun fact The actor who played Shang Tsung was well like they used him for the bass character of the new Shang Tsung in mortal Kombat 11 he also Voiced him. @@starrsmith3810 Bridgette Wilson did voice Sonia and in the dlc pack Robo cop was the same actor and both Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger did their own voices as well kinda cool
First of all, the soundtrack is legendary, especially kmfdm's Sister Salvation song. Second there were reports of the budget and productive being ultra cheap. Lambert apparently bought food for everyone with his own money. I think they're were a volume of other things that came out about this production over the years that should have been included.
KMFDM song's called Juke Joint Jezebel which is conveniently on the same album as Ultra which was used in the animated Street Fighter II movie when Vega's fighting Chun Li
As a kid, what surprised me the most about this movie were the comedic moments and the camaraderie formed between the main characters. It kind of resembled the "buddy cop" formula being used in movies at the time. Which I admit, worked for me.
I think the thing we wanted from these movies was accuracy to the games we're playing and must movies never hit the mark.... But this one came closer than most
MINTY, why didn't you mention that RAYDEN, in Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, was voiced by CLANCY BROWN who played the KURGAN in HIGHLANDER along side CHRISTOPHER LAMBERT and SEAN CONNERY. That makes three Mortal Kombat/Highlander connections. Three different immortals meant to portray the same immortal Rayden.
Oh yeah, bonus fact. The character Kano was originally said to be born in Tokyo to an American mother. Trevor Goddard's performance was so loved the character has since been given a slight resemblance and a similar Australian accent as tribute to the late actor.
Oh, Minty, Minty... You failed to acknowledge the most amazing fact of the MK movie: it was so successful and loved by most fans that it actually INFLUENCED the game itself! 1) Kano was supposed to be Chinese American, but due to the actor's performance, the creators were so impressed that Kano is now that rough aussie like tough guy we all know. 2) all romances of the film actually came to fruition. Liu Kang and Kitana, and Sonya with Johnny Cage. And that second one was not seen coming. 3) in later games Johnny references to the broken sunglasses to Goro. 4) many of the actors performed again for Mortal Kombat 11
Awesome video, minty. I’m a mortal kombat fan and I personally enjoyed this movie when I first saw it as a kid. Also I find it fascinating to learn about the casting possibilities.
Ok so my first thought every time Roger Ebert is brought up is "He hated it, because he hated every movie. Like, no surprise there." but hearing that he thought it was too tame? Wow, that's actually kinda impressive and makes me wonder what it might have meant for future video game movies if it had been more brutal.
In hindsight making it PG-13 was the right move as R rated movies especially back in early 90's was a hard selling point as a lot of parents included mine wouldn't have taken their kids to see a R rated movie. The video game due to blood and gore was very criticized at the time and it wouldn't had transition as well in the movie unlike today! 🤷♂️

@@UndyingZombie Studios don't know what people want. They think audiences are stupid and need their hand held through everything.
Crazy talk I tell you 🤣
Yes but the 2nd film was so bad and barely followed the plot of the 2nd game it was more based on the 3rd game especially since a few MK3 characters Sindel Cyrex/Seckor ARE in that film.

That movie sucks....and the 2nd one....not to even be mention....but....they should make one now.....more money....better effects.....
