Great adventure movie... I've only watched the other PoTC movies like once or twice each... this one is already a classic to me and I watch it frequently. Everything just works in this movie. Kinda impressive to get so many things right. Like the fine balance between realistic and fantasy - while managing to be gloomy as well as fun.
I actually really like the 2 Davy Jone sequels 😃 The story n music were really well done, it also xpand alot into the pirate world. Davy Jone was a great villain 😊
I couldn't agree more on that and those are actually my favorite entries in the series. Hearing Davey Jones's theme on his pipe organ always gives me goosebumps and my all time favorite piece of music in the series.
# 11: they wanted real rough seas. So they chartered two offshore supply vessels the NRC Responder (Black Pearl) and Megan T Miller (intercepter). They went a 100 miles off of Norfolk and wanted to see the real sh*t. The whole crew was sea sick they lost multiple cameras and the waves broke the wheelhouse windows on the Megan T. They superimposed the two ships on the osvs and all the movements and conditions were real. I watched the videos a few times.
They actually ended up using the tall ship The Lady Washington for the Interceptor in the movie. It's one of the big deals for my hometown in Aberdeen Washington. Teaching summer school for AHS in 2003, we got to take the students to a special showing at our local theater with the guys from Grays Harbor Historical Seaport since they built the ship back in I think 1989. They and the ship have a thanks in the ending credits. There was even a legal fight with Disney over them making changes to the ship for the movie and not restoring it back to the prior condition and rigging after the filming wrapped.
to be fair, we did get Davey Jones in the second movie, one of the most awesome cgi baddies ever created, which still looks great even by today's standards.
It was very cutting edge technology at the time, ILM had to create software just to animate the tentacles and the particle physics simulation for the water on it. Plus they added some unique details based on Bill Nighy's on set performance capture, he was wearing a motion capture suit and dots on his face, so they could capture his movements exactly. This was when motion capture was still in its infancy, so it is even more impressive.
I remember seeing this on the first week it was released. I had no real expectations and everyone present had a huge blast. This movie really was a roller coaster ride.
My daughter turned this movie this morning and she absolutely LOVED it. I kept smiling and cracking up at Johnny's lines, while my daughter was in awe of his performance. Needless to say she's a fan of his now. We love you Johnny!!
Well said about the executives staying in the office and letting the creative team work. So many movies and the like have been ruined by "executives" who have no taste in anything.
We happened to be at Disney World when this movie was released. Every theater at their park SOLD OUT. We got lucky to see it. The company was interviewing patrons as they were-leaving. Pretty nice.
The movie that made pirates cool again. The last few Pirates films have to be the worst...but you have heard of them. Always a fun movie series to watch .
2003 was such a great movie year for blockbusters. Return of the king, pirates, master and commander, bad boys so many more. Remember struggling to see them all
Great Movie, thanks for the video. This came out the year my son turned 4, our daughter was born and we began our habit of multiple WDW trips per year. My son was hugely into it when the first two sequels came out and we had all pirate everything. I even built him a large pirate ship bed in his bedroom, he had all the memorabilia, and we always went all out for Disney Cruise Line's Pirate Days at Sea. Good times and great memories! My son is now a senior in college in Hawaii and I wonder where the time went. We had kind of a Toy Story 3 / Bonnie moment the month before he left for his freshmen year of college when the two of us finally dismantled his long since outgrown pirate ship bed. I had spent months building it when he was young: It had a mast and sails, built in storage, a trundle bed, and a giant steering wheel from a real boat. It was so big the only way to get it out of there was to completely tear it apart. Taking the bed apart was very tough for me to get through emotionally as he prepared to go halfway around the world and become an adult. It was almost symbolic of him walking away from childhood. We still have the ship steering wheel on a pedestal though! I think I'll call my son now...thanks again for the video!
I used to work at superstore - photo and audio dept. where vhs and dvd was still a thing. I have seen this movie at least 3 or 4 times a day on repeat on tv displays, good times lol
Depp made Pirates a classic. He's simply a Great actor, and has earned the right to have the attitude (if any) he does. He's one of my favorites. *Fun Fact*- After All the Pirates movies were done, Johnny still wore the caps on his teeth which were professionally put in by a dentist. He had them in on his audition.
Mark, I enjoy watching your reviews and facts, I have a few ideas if you haven’t done them already, a few good men, the rock, taken, red heat, the fan, cool runnings and space camp to name a few, keep up the great work
It is true that Disneyland used some real skulls/skeletons when Pirates of the Caribbean first opened at Disneyland in the 60s. They were donated by UCLA, as at the time, fake skeletons didn't look realistic enough. But as time went on and technology advanced, all the real skeletons were replaced with fake ones (and also given a proper burial). But supposedly one real skull is still there - inside the Captain's treasure room where a skeleton in bed is looking at a treasure map with a magnifying glass. The skull on the bed's headboard is the last remaining real one. Also, just a fun little fact, the Shanghai version of the Pirates ride is the first (and only) of the Pirates of the Caribbean attractions that is based on the movies. The rest all came before the movies (though elements/characters from the movie have been added to those rides since the movie got so popular). And Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida initially was not supposed to get a Pirates ride, as they felt Florida was too close to the actual Caribbean. Instead, that park was going to get a western themed version, called Western River Expedition, which was going to be part of a 2nd phase of the park (but that's a whole 'nother story). But when WDW opened in 1971, lots of people were asking "Where's the Pirate ride?", so Imagineering rushed to shoehorn a version of the ride into the park as quick as they could. As for Eisner, before coming to Disney, he was President & CCO of the Paramount movie studio. He came to Disney in 1984 along with Frank Wells. And at first it was a great move, as Wells was the money guy (like Roy O. Disney was) and Eisner the creative guy (like Walt Disney). But then Wells was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in 1994. Eisner then took over being President as well as being CEO and Chariman of the Board for Disney. And things slowly started going down hill and Eisner was sinking the company with lots of bad decisions. He was eventually ousted in 2005 after a 2 year "Save DIsney" campaign organized by Roy E. Disney (Roy O's son & Walt's nephew).
I bought the DVD when it came out mostly because it had a full ride through of the original Pirates ride at Disneyland. I did not regret it and got a great movie as a bonus! Thanks for all the wonderful info, Minty! Your videos are always very well done!
I remember this coming out and seeing it, I still have the ticket. When it came out it was just "Pirates of the Caribbean", when they added "Curse of the Black Pearl", I was like, "WTF is this? When did this come out?". Then I realized what it was and laughed a little.
Great movie, and as usual you did a great job of telling us seldom known things. I have a suggestion for a future video. Ten things we don't know about Minty.
I saw this one in the theater and loved it but I am a big Jack Sparrow fan. Minty, you need to go to Disneyland and maybe even Universal Studios in California. You would love both places.
Pirates is one of my favorite movies ever! I love every single one so when I saw your video I had to watch it! Can you please touch on the other movies?? I need to know more about Davy Jones haha
@@brandonsavitski it's a fantasy story set up by the first film at least the second and third where the most grounded like strange tide and dead men tell no tell just went over the top I will agree. Gave you actually characters and motivations while the latter two gave you generic villains. Like your going to tell me Davy Jones isn't the best villain in the series rivaled only by Beckett.
When I saw this the first time in theatre (yes, I am old 😉), I felt like I was watching a real life adaptation of the video game "Monkey Island". AND I LOVED IT 😂 Seriosly, think about it: ghost pirates, a big treasure, a naive main character,...DAMN even the the dog with the prison cell key was in it! 🤣
The writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio have admitted in an interview they were huge fans of The Monkey Island games, which were loosely lampooning the Disney ride anyway. Just poking fun at the way pirates insult each other during combat and how grog is like sulphuric acid in certain situations, plus the fourth wall breaks too. 🤣 The dog with the keys in the prison was apparently in the original ride at Disneyland. I don't know because I have never experienced the ride in my life.
The Special Edition of Monkey Island on Xbox Live has an audio commentary from the game's creator, who said he did loosely base the game on the Disney ride and a book called On Stranger Tides, but he put his own humour into it. He created the SCUMM interface specifically for the game, which at the time was groundbreaking, it changes the music dynamically based on what is happening in the game and it was meant to replace the text adventure games that existed before. So instead of typing in commands, you just click on the action buttons instead. There was an early version of the interface in The Day of The Tentacle game before, which he also worked on, but it was very basic.
@@chindleymuffin Didn't know the game was REALLY inspired by the ride, but it makes sense, especially if you look at the second part. ;-) Thanks for the information!

A theme park ride based on a movie based on a theme park ride: The movie was so popular that the Jack Sparrow character was added to the theme park ride.
Pirates is an amazing experience (the ride) because the pirates are the OG ones. All their faces LOOK like they are from the 60s, if that makes sense. They just look old in the design. Same for Haunted Mansion. Just looking at the Disney people working on developing the rides, the fact the designs are that old and still there today as rides. That is why Disneyland, when not overcrowded and hot, is the best place on the planet. ALSO: The part when Jack arrives on his sinking ship and steps on the dock, that shot was completed amazingly. Apparently, the DOCK is moving toward Jack and the sinking ship, not the other way around. I watched the director's commentary and was blown away by that.
Great Movie and I Love that this movie was based on the ride at Disneyland!! Also I love the scene where they show the dog with the keys in his Mouth not helping the guy in jail just as the ride you see that as well!! Also the premire on June 28th 2003 when the movie premiered is actually my birthday but i was born in 79' not 2003', so Awesome!! Great job Mr. Minty!!
One interesting fact, there was a script circulating at the time this movie was getting underway for an animated pirate movie based on the computer game Secret Of Monkey Island. Fans of the game insist that this movie rips off that script and the game. That would be ironic, because the game’s designer Ron Gilbert said he got the idea for the game while riding Pirates Of The Caribbean at Disneyland.
What I don't understand is why everyone is so against Cutthroat Island. I've seen that movie probably 10 times already and I love it. Anyway, I love Pirates of the Caribbean and of course Johnny Depp!
I remember it was torn apart by critics at the time, this was back when the Internet was still pretty basic and not like it is now. So most people would listen to mainstream media critics and believe them, not like now. It was a huge flop and made the studio Carolco Pictures bankrupt, which was a shame.
I actually don't mind the sequels I've seen. They're kinda cool in their own right. Thanks, Minty, for covering this absolute blast of a movie! Also, I loved seeing Brilliant but Cancelled T.V. show Almost Human. Unfortunately, it had only one season, leaving SO MANY questions unanswered. But, Crook was SO GOOD as Dr Rudy Lom!
Johnny Depp married a psychopath, and now his life is an open book for all to see, I hope he emerges from this stronger, smarter, sober and successful. We need him to make more movies like this.
Fun fact #11. There was only one real ship used in the movie. The HMS Interceptor was played by the tall ship Lady Washington from Anacortes Wa. She was also used in Star Trek Generations as the tall ship they used for the promotion ceremony for Worf. Lady Washington tours the west cost of the US and sometimes farther out, and you can tour her for free, and some times they will take people out on a “cruise”. But the cruise does cost a few dollars.
Out of all the films, 1 and 3 are my favourites. PotC 1 will always be my top, since I watched it so much and it was the first of them. 2 was a filler, which after 3 came out, made me like the film a bit more. 3 was everything 1 was but more. The action scenes, the comedy, the acting was amazing. 4 and 5 were both blah, but that's because I felt they should have stopped after 3. I always find it funny that when Pirates first came out, it was the first time majority of the popular was introduced to Johnny Depp. So whenever I said Johnny Depp was my favourite actor, people would always say "oh, so youre on the bandwagon too." I would fight for the fact that Johnny Depp was my favourite actor since I was 3, 10 years before Pirates even came out, with Edward Scissorhands, and that my favourite movie he is in, will always be Sleepy Hollow.
I enjoy all three, 1 is the best because it shows us all the characters, 3 I love for Elizabeth's armory, Calypso's freeing ... and that it's one of the secondary characters that understands what to do, and the final sea battle ... also Lord what'shisname so completely not understanding that it wasn't "just good business" in his final scene. 2 is good because it sets up 3. I watch all of them periodically, and I knew Depp for Cry Baby and What's Eating Gilbert Grape ... wasn't that taken with Edward Scissorhands, although I did watch it. 4 and 5 have interesting stuff in them, but ... I don't think they realized that Depp's character was never the lead, he was what made the leads work. Which is sad.
@@omegatired I agree with Jack is not good as a main character, thats the same reason Lori was a side character in his own show. I didnt see Crybaby until years after Pirates 1 came out. I didnt really like Whats Eating Gilbert Grape. I still haven't seen but really want to watch Ed Wood, mind you, there are a lot of Depp films I need to get into actually watching. Ninth Gate was a great movie. I sadly couldn't watch Fear and Loathing, I can't handle watching things with lots of sex, drugs, or violence.
@@littleboo2002 I somehow acquired two copies of the Ninth Gate and watch it occasionally. I also have From Hell, which is a hard one for me to watch. It hits far too close to what I'd think is reality. I haven't tried Fear and Loathing yet. But I found Blow fascinating, and very sad. He picks and chooses his projects with a lot of consideration for character, I think. I need to see Ed Wood as well, but at the moment, I'm weeding out DVDs because I have both the collection I made and one I inherited from a friend ... Adding to it has become detrimental to space. Thanks for the reply.
'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' is a million times better of a title than 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the lost gold' for the shear fact that 'The Curse of the Black Pearl' doesn't give away nearly as much plot elements than 'The Curse of the Lost gold' would have, that would be like entitling "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" "Star Was: Behind the Throne, Emperor Palpatine The back-water desk-clerk years"

If it looks like I’m looking out my window I know it’s a good one!
Yes, the Blu-ray version is fantastic. So many more details are seen and the night scenes are really much sharper/clearer!!
@@slcRN1971 seriously! First time I saw that in HD I thought I was watching a behind the scenes video. Then I was all confused because it looked like they recreated the scene (where Jack first shows up at Port Royal) on video. It looked that good!
My initials with my whole 3rd grade class's initials are tucked away down below in a wall of the Lady Washington. It was built in Aberdeen in '89. I lived in Montesano and my dad had a woodshop business and dojo in Aberdeen. It used to dock here in Port Angeles and I had a blast going down below to see where my SAB initials are hiding behind the wall.
Pirates II and Pirates III were also fantastic, although the excised scenes should have not walked the plank. And the score by Klaus Badelt with Hans Zimmer is very good.
3 sucked
The first 2 were great , after that if started goin downhill

1- turner: you cheated!
2-captain sparrow: I'm a pirate lad!
3-elizabeth: you think you know pain?! Try wearing a corset!!
4-barbossa's henchmen: they're stealing our ship! BLOODY PIRATES!!
I downloaded this movie back in the day. And enjoyed it so much I took my dad an sister to go see it in the theatre.
Was so worth it. Such an epic movie.
Can you imagine how awesome it would be if Spielberg directed so Dustin Hoffman could make a cameo as Captain Hook
Dep was so good in this role! It's a shame he had to encounter that floater on the high seas of Hollywood and pick up Amber Turd
😂
You said "Mega-pint" fresh out of the gate! 🤣 well played Minty!
“Before finding turds in his bed, he was finding lost treasure” 😂😂😂😂 Hahahaha
I actually like the first three movies of this franchise. The cast is really good and lots of fun in my opinion.
First three movies are the best. The story was build up so well. The rest is fun to watch cause Depp is in it. Without Depp there is just no POTC.
They should have ended it with the first 3, the rest are trash
That Amber Heard line was hilarious.
yep
I actually really like the 2 Davy Jone sequels 😃
The story n music were really well done, it also xpand alot into the pirate world.

@@treyartson6788 yes but they computer imposed her onto the boat I worked on.
to be fair, we did get Davey Jones in the second movie, one of the most awesome cgi baddies ever created, which still looks great even by today's standards.
Jack Sparrow is by far the best character 💛
I remember seeing this on the first week it was released. I had no real expectations and everyone present had a huge blast. This movie really was a roller coaster ride.
HELL YEAH, THAT’S MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME!
They aren’t just undead at night. The moonlight just shows how they really look.
This was the best in the franchise, savvy!

My daughter turned this movie this morning and she absolutely LOVED it. I kept smiling and cracking up at Johnny's lines, while my daughter was in awe of his performance. Needless to say she's a fan of his now. We love you Johnny!!
This movie was solid gold! JD crushed this so hard, fantastic casting choices with a little supernatural spin with the right amount of comedy
Such a great movie. And Captain Jack Sparrow was played brilliantly.
I love this film it's so hilarious johnny Depp plays Captain Jack Sparrow brilliantly 👍👍👍👍👍👍
2003 was such a great movie year for blockbusters. Return of the king, pirates, master and commander, bad boys so many more. Remember struggling to see them all
WISH WEE RUSSEL WOULD GET OFF HIS HOOP AND MAKE THE SEQUEL HE HINTED AT A FEW YEARS AGO. MASTER AND COMMANDER IS A GREAT MOVIE.
Justice for Johnny Depp !!!! He created this role out of thin air.

This was the first film I purchased on DVD. It was an ex-rental from Blockbuster.
The whole series is my favorite movies of all time. I can watch all of them over and over again!
Eisner did a lot of good as well
I couldn't imagine Jack Sparrow being any other way than how Depp played him
I bought the DVD when it came out mostly because it had a full ride through of the original Pirates ride at Disneyland. I did not regret it and got a great movie as a bonus! Thanks for all the wonderful info, Minty! Your videos are always very well done!

I watched this movie the other night in honor of Depp's verdict. Such a fantastic movie! It never gets old.
I remember this coming out and seeing it, I still have the ticket. When it came out it was just "Pirates of the Caribbean", when they added "Curse of the Black Pearl", I was like, "WTF is this? When did this come out?". Then I realized what it was and laughed a little.

Also minty got to disagree Dead Man's Chest is the best Pirates of the Caribbean film.
Every movie after the first movie seemed just "way too over the top" and far too comical.
@@brandonsavitski it's a fantasy story set up by the first film at least the second and third where the most grounded like strange tide and dead men tell no tell just went over the top I will agree.
Gave you actually characters and motivations while the latter two gave you generic villains.

"You may be the worst movie reviewer I've ever heard of"
Minty: "But you have heard of me"
When I saw this the first time in theatre (yes, I am old 😉), I felt like I was watching a real life adaptation of the video game "Monkey Island".
The dog with the keys in the prison was apparently in the original ride at Disneyland. I don't know because I have never experienced the ride in my life.
@@chindleymuffin 😂

Johnny Depp nailed the role
YOU DID IT WHAT I ASKED LAST WEEK, THANKS MINTY 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great Movie and I Love that this movie was based on the ride at Disneyland!!
If it weren't for Depp, I wouldn't care about those movies. He did a great job!
I agree
Wait until the new one comes out with no Jack Sparrow.
What I don't understand is why everyone is so against Cutthroat Island. I've seen that movie probably 10 times already and I love it. Anyway, I love Pirates of the Caribbean and of course Johnny Depp!
Me too. I didn't think Cutthroat Island was as bad as everybody said. I like it.
I also like that film. It would be interesting to see, just how many people liked it and how many haven’t even seen it yet.
I remember it was torn apart by critics at the time, this was back when the Internet was still pretty basic and not like it is now. So most people would listen to mainstream media critics and believe them, not like now.
It was a huge flop and made the studio Carolco Pictures bankrupt, which was a shame.
@@slcRN1971 that would be interesting indeed.

I thought the 3rd was the weak one
@@robd1329 really? Do you know why you felt that? I might also be bias because I love that last battle and knowing how they did it.
