Pipe welders do seem to have the most interesting custom trucks. Some are down right works of art. I do like the closed trunk doodads you have there. Good stuff
I've built 7 flatbeds so far and I'm always jealous of you pipeliners. You seem to have the time to build the bed on the truck in a week or less sometimes. I've always either been driving the truck, or the customer is using it and I have to run them down on the road or farm site to take as many measurements as possible, multiple times lol. I always start with the deck skin laying upside down on my shop floor, then I build the frame and skeleton on that flat surface. then flip it over, and build the headache rack and boxes. Then I need the pickup for about 3 days to remove the original bed, make the mounts to the frame get the fuel filler neck made, then install the original bed back on and send it back for about 1 week while I paint and wire the lights. Then it's about 2 days to install, finish the final wiring, and send it out the door.
1) i learned the hard way to account for the pull. 2) I like the vevor mag drill so far so good 3) definitely talked to myself and thought a lot building my Bed.
I am sure this bed will look slick. I am a old timer. Really do not care to much how beds are built today. When I came up and on my rig today. Always carried large acetylene bottle. Always two oxygen bottles standing up. A headache rack behind the welder no hoosier pole. Welders use to say a good welder can build a box that opens like a chest but a great welder can build a box that opens like a cabinet. I know you will have all your bases covered.
Just came across your WWA videos, I seen your videos prior to seeing WWA and I can honestly say you pushed me to just go ahead and sign up to become a welder, I make a 25 hour drive from Tampa in a few hours. Thanks man
Good advice at the beginning about welding with the battery Still attached. That was actually one of the first question I asked a stick welder at this alignment shop I worked for "YEARS BEFORE" I went to school for welding.😂he said one time he welded on a forklift and the battery exploded. There were a lot of hazards at that job they would bend 18 wheeler truck axles back if they got screwed up during an accident. All they did was put a solid metal ball between a hydraulic press and the axle and apply air pressure the guy who ended up taking the position I was training for had his face blew off by one when it slipped out he had to get his face completely reconnstructed.anyways a bit off track good info😅
Buy a cheap running ! 3/4 ton 2000s Silverado & swap everything Better fuel economy & more torque & overdrive , air condition Engine harness run the gauge cluster near floor Adapt rear axle
My first truck was a '63 Chevy. Bruised my knees a hundred times on that stinkin' windshield dogleg! But I learned a lot working on it and had a bunch of fun.
@@briantruck2284 kind of the idea actually. Except it’s a C60 so the axles will come out of something a little bigger than a Silverado. I am for sure looking forward to finding the Gen VI 454 to replace the stock 230 with
Such cool timing!! I’m building a contractor style flatbed on my ‘21 ram dually, it’s awesome seeing you did some of the same things I’ve done. I’m not a fabricator by trade so I’m relieved I wasn’t miles off on design, even if I take wayyyyy longer and it’s not quite as sexy as yours. Thanks for posting these man!! Super helpful and inspiring.
Thanks for sharing Austin. Hate when that happens but glad it was easily taken care of and till safe. Keep up the good videos and the fun you have also. Fred,
Don't worry about that gap Austin! An old fitter told monce you can make pipe with a mig gun! No reason you can't make a little square tube! Haha I really appreciate all your content!
You don't make mistakes it just wasn't the way someone else would have done it a I tell my guys that I teach how to weld it is not a mistake if it can be fixed keep up the amazing job brother I want to see this bed out please
Love ur vids just starting welding got in to iron Workers local 433, working to get my stick welding certs. And I'm gonna do this myself to my 2000 24V. You boost my confidence by showing even the pros make little mistakes. Thanks much love from Las Vegas Ross 👍
What are you doing welding with a squrt gun? I didn't know you could use one. You even made a video about being a decated rod burner. Ha ha. Another fantastic video. You are doing a good service to especially the young people trying to get started in the welding trade. I had the privilege to grow up in a fabrication environment, and the experience has served me well throughout life
I love the fact you show us your mistakes like that tube that could have gone all the way across, shows we are all human even the UA-cam famous welders. On another note. Man I don't know if I could drive around knowing someone else built my bed. The way I see it that's kinda like your resume.
Mechanic note to welders who hate paying mechanics or do their own wrenching. Have an EASY way to get to your in-tank fuel pump to troubleshoot or replace it without dropping the fuel tank because the dang pumps seem to die when it's full and dealing with jacks, straps and hoses is no fun. I also anti-seize ALL my truck bed bolts, tank strap bolts if I pull a tank etc so the next time is much less suffering. If you picture a piece of 8-inch pipe centered on the fuel pump and leave a way to reach it with that much clearance you can swap pumps very quickly in the field and save towing your truck to a shop. Your wallet, your call.
In the 3 main manufacturers Body Builders literature it states to disconnect the battery (s) before welding. For years I built trucks from cab & chassis and after leveling them in the shop on jack stands for the build, we always disconnected the batteries. Why take the chance.
Tip... Close your eyes while you make the First Arc Strike, Giving the Auto darkening lens a few seconds to Fully Activate, And change in a New Battery Every year.
Hey Austin, I see you using a "grass hopper" all the time and have heard you say it is so that you don't arc outside of the weld zone or something like that, my question is what would be wrong with using a magnetic ground? I am not a pipeline welder but do build steel buildings and pipe fence and love my magnetic ground.
Clearly you can do it yourself. But if you ever need a flatbed (normal, skirted, western hauler) , service body, snowplows, or lift gates you should bring it over to us at Arrowhead truck equipment in Bixby. Not saying this cause I work there but we truly do better work than perfection. Justin is all about the costumer too. Great guy to do business with.
I know this doesn’t relate to the Current topic but I learned welding at my previous job and I always loved welding at big industrial plants. How do I get into that kind of work as a self own business
Saw you were using a Vevor mag drill in the video. Was curious what your thoughts on it are since I looked it up and saw it was cheaper than most others I've seen. Loved the video, and can't wait to see how the bed turns out!
I have a few vevor tools and my understanding is they're basically the cheapest Chinese tools but with some amount of extra quality control, so they're more likely to function reliably.
New truck? You gotta show it to us!!😊 Just curious...sometimes when repairs have to be made to a truck, such as a pickup type, the bed has to be removed. With all the framework welded to this truck, how could those repairs be made in the future?...(I hope you don't have any repairs to be done!!!)
If the vehicle your welding on is new enough to have a computer BY ALL MEANS UNHOOK THE BATTERY. All kinds of things can go wrong and maybe you get by doing it but the one time you get feedback through the electrical system good by computer. And they aren't cheep..
If your getting back into pipelining and need a helper let me know I graduate my welding program June 23rd and I'm looking for work and would like to not work at a factory

Nice job Austin. I swear you alway get one done and then think of a new way to do it.

A real welder builds his own bed ! Just know when your done, you will have wished you built it different. I'm on my 3rd bed on my 2018 Ram 5500.
Do you have no learning curve?
I love this! I’m looking forward to building one for my ‘63 Chevy but there is a lot more to do before the fun stuff

Hey friend, you run a cutting torch the same way my daddy did. . Thanks for your videos.

Nothing like a good little thinking....saves a lot time and headaches.
Yes, sir, good work great video.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who sits down with a cup of coffee and looks at a project to think about how to do it lol
Looking good!!!
Clean start to that bed!!!
That’s looking good brother the new weld mobile be safe out the and keep burning them rods 🤙🏼

What a cool Mag base drill on your vice!!!
Pretty good alright! Keep them videos coming. Work safe.
I love how in welding there isn't a gap, there's just more weld.
Austin, very inspiring what you do.
I’m just a hobby welder and learn from videos like yours.
Keep it up, best wishes from Norway 🇳🇴
Good job brother I love it you’re so good
Hell yeah!
Keep these videos coming man
I’ve been following you since day -
Good work Legend👑
Thanks for posting . I wanna see the rest of the project in details please.
Good work

Thanks for sharing. I live in Stillwater and work at National Standard, we make weld wire. Would like to come watch you work sometime.
Beautiful

Love the video man💯%

Please show the skirting! Always wondered how that was done!
Nice 👍
I usually use either metal tractor trailer, rear tire, fenders, they have many different styles and metals and mounds, or the plastic minimizer’s
Do you have a material list for this bed build? I would love to get a rough idea of how much I would have in materials to build my first welding bed.
Right on
Tip... Close your eyes while you make the First Arc Strike, Giving the Auto darkening lens a few seconds to Fully Activate, And change in a New Battery Every year.
6” 3R 90s work great. Same centers as 12” and not quite as thick.

the ground is the most important thing to unhook but i usually do both!
Summit racing has wheel tubs that work really good.
how much different with the frame rails be for a cabin chassis build
Bon Boulo 😀😀👍👍
Is that a canvas salvage tarp covering the cab to protect it? I am building my own and new to welding, learning what to use.
Yes, it is a canvas tarp.
If you could show how you are mounting the goose neck would appreciate it
Nice brother can we get a single wheel instead of dually Austin

How do you like that Vevor mag drill?
Austin what's up brother hope all is well with you
What brand quick connects do you use?

Very good to know. Thank you.
Do you undo your battery on your welding truck when you weld on the back? I've welded on my truck bed forever with out a problem.
How do you like that mag drill?
Hey just had a question I have a 1987 Chevy 4door long bud what would you do to make a welding bed on it
I know this doesn’t relate to the Current topic but I learned welding at my previous job and I always loved welding at big industrial plants. How do I get into that kind of work as a self own business
Thats my truck haha
Why did you heat up that angle metal Austin? Genuinely curious
You should find a short hood for a machine.
How did you attach that plate for the mag drill
Saw you were using a Vevor mag drill in the video. Was curious what your thoughts on it are since I looked it up and saw it was cheaper than most others I've seen. Loved the video, and can't wait to see how the bed turns out!

Roughly how much would it cost for all this steel to make a bed like this?
New truck? You gotta show it to us!!😊

Random question: what’s everyone’s thoughts on a Honda GAW-180hea generator welder?
Garth was from Yukon I think.
My uncles brother lived next door to Garth in college, and claims he got tired of hearing him play music all night 🤣
How much u charge
Best part of this video is watching you think!
She must of danced with Garth Brooks before he caved in to pressure and started selling Bud light at his honky tonk.
When you getting on a pipeline job next
Was that a mig welder? No way!
If the vehicle your welding on is new enough to have a computer BY ALL MEANS UNHOOK THE BATTERY. All kinds of things can go wrong and maybe you get by doing it but the one time you get feedback through the electrical system good by computer. And they aren't cheep..
By using roll outs connected to your bed nobody disconnect the grounds.
Thank you for using a torch and not a matabo
If your getting back into pipelining and need a helper let me know I graduate my welding program June 23rd and I'm looking for work and would like to not work at a factory
interesting
Glad to see you using a Ford... just out of curiosity why did you get a Ford...?
It’s not mine, it’s a customers.
Draw it out first. Then you have a plan in place.
👌
