- In this video, I will be building the rear quarter section of a pipeline-style welding bed. I had some 3/16 plate rolled for the exterior corners and some 3/16 plate broke (bent) that we will use as the inner skirt. The goal was to maximize the box space on this welding rig.

My upcoming project is waiting in the wings.
I had bought a canopy so I can work in the hot afternoon sun 🌞 and during the changing conditions. The frame was so flimsy in a light breeze. I reboxed the entire mess. Shipped it back to China.
Last week my neighbor mentioned. Hey where is your canopy? I told him the tale.
Then he said. I will bring you some thin wall pipe. He brought over 250 feet to my surprise.
So I've cut the pipe in 10 feet sections. Maybe this weekend I can start laying out the pipe and getting ready to start coping joints and stick welding again.
All because of y'all's channel.
As the saying goes. IF I CAN DO IT...y'all can DO IT.

Yeah you definitely would love a plasma cutter. A whole lot faster and cleaner than a torch. No reheating to start cutting and less slag.
Those rolled edges look great I’ll have to try that when I rebuild my service truck bed I’ve had to get mid slope on logging equipment to do repairs and there wasn’t any roads to use so I’ve bounced the truck off a few rocks I bet that thick walled pipe on a radius like that would just slide right off the obstacles and keep going never really thought of that idea thanks a ton

I would love to see the 95 get a bed
Seeing you cut that floor panel with the oxy-acetylene gas hoses infront of you made me anxious. Imagine if one of the flying chunks of molten metal, or an edge of the falling plate would've ruptured on of the hoses.

Looks good can't wait to see what you do with the boxes have you ever considered mounting a couple of 1 in or inch and a half pillar blocks and a shaft sticking out of your bed with a flange to attach a roll out wheel that has a bearing ground and the pillar blocks insulated from the frame😊😊😊

It would be hard considering that most of it would be like a personal choice for what we are needing at the time and every vehicle has different framework under but great idea
By the time a welder is ready to build a bed they have their own preferences and of course every truck is different (maintenance access like pulling fuel pumps without dropping the tank needs specific consideration).
Well if a vehicle started life as a cab chassis those are all about the same from any manufacturer, They're straight frames and their width is standardized unlike trucks that came with pick up beds, those are bent frames and usually come in two different widths dually or not dually. It wouldn't be that hard to at least do for a somewhat standardized center section and the overall shape, and then compartments on a case by case basis. I'm sketching it up for myself at the moment, Love those massive tool boxes!. And if it's done on a CAD, then of course it's infinitely changeable and you could also just convert to CNC and send it all off to a laser cutter and then you just have pieces to glue together. But I still like just cobbling stuff together also. Just my two cents.
I hope I don't run into that bad boy with my Ford Escape.. It'll be crumpled and I will have to buy a new car. You will have to buy a can of touch up paint!
As long as you rear end him at a slight angle, his chassis rails will crumple and his whole bed will just move through his cabin

a tip for the tracing carpentry trick you used was instead of trying to hold a level use a combination square with a pencil taped to it at an angle

What size wheel / tire are you running? I have material for 12” 90s 35”/12.5” dually with 2” spacer. I also picked up 6” 90s for the tool box corners. We don’t usually build em like you guys up here in Canada but Im trying. @arosswelding

I had my local steel supplier roll them for me.

I really enjoy your videos. I use to weld in a shop and after i left for hvac 2010 i havnt struck an arc. But...finally got a little welder and gonna try to do a little. Ive only ever burned one rod (i was running wire) whats a good all around rod to start with? Thanks.
I learnt with 7018 2.5mm but in the end, buy what is cheap near you set the amps hot enough that you can keep it close without it sticking and just try and be as comfortable as you can prop your arms and have a nice bench etc
If I were you I’d start with 6011 or 6013 to build confidence before moving to a 7018.
I would start with 1/8 6010, 6011, or 6013

what would be the advantage of having a rig bed, and one made from steel instead of aluminum?

Very nice technical build. Not a simple build at all, lots of technique and thought put into it (because of years of use and "wishing it was like this").
I do have a question though.
In my life I've seen a lot of pipeline trucks and a lot of bed styles and of those a lot of rounded profiles.
I've never understood the need/use for rounded corners. Roundish vs. Square, OK, but long radius bends, why?
You lose a lot of useable space because of the round corners.
Perhaps you could explain the real reason, other than esthetics, for the rounded shapes and the loss of useable area associated with it.
I’m with you on the not as long radius corners being more practical use of space. Unfortunately the only reason I know of why a lot of guys including myself do it is because of aesthetics.

Texas style decks are not practical in northern climes. Top loading toolboxes can be a nightmare for organizing and staying organized. Doors and drawers when you got a foot of snow on top of your deck. Had 5 rigs in my time. Austin, you do nice work though.
Seems like it might fill with water in a rainy climate too. But, man...This bed is looking good!!!

Around $7K - 8k for a welding bed. Depends what customization you have done and if its powder coated.

For me to do a one off one like this it cost more than the business that makes a bunch of the same kind and less custom.
This bed I had about 180 man hours. I charged $60/ hr which is a discount. (On account of a guy could go to someone who builds them more often and get pretty close to the same idea for cheaper) my normal rate is $110/hr. And materials cost 8k for this bed plus he will have another 3k in line x
