Yeah, I don’t have a steam deck I gave up on handheld when my eyes got too bad and looking at handheld just gives me a massive headache. I play a lot of FPS games and I’d rather play on console and turn cross play off to avoid the cheaters and hackers.
Wasn't the point of consoles to have fixed hardware making them the standard experience for the 5-7 years of their life? If you have to interject a Pro version, might as well go to PC.
Yes and it seems consumer behaviors that adapted to cell phone releases are the reason why game console manufacturers think it's a good idea to do mid console refreshes they see cell phone buyers switch their phones out all the time. $1,000 products people break and replace possibly once a year. Sony is trying to bank off that same behavior... Most console players sell the old console to upgrade to the new one. Sony is trying to bank on that possibility
No, console games have evolved inside a generation since Nintendo was using special chips in their cartridges to increase performance and Sega was doing add ons like the Sega CD and the 32x.
I think that consoles is for people don't want to run their software after a couple of years. If you want to keep running your software bought in 1985 you just buy a PC. (Yes, you can run real mode 16 bits application baremetal in actual hardware)
All but DeckReady, all clickbait and kind of a tool. The rest of the guys are awesome. They cover everything, DeckReady is all biases and doesn’t mention anything unless it involves the things he likes.
Bazzite on my main pc has been amazing. Also have installed it to the kids machines. Wish I could lock the settings behind a pin or something to keep the kids' from messing anything up.
Never used bazzite but can't you set the rights of the setting folders in a way that your kids' user accounts can't write? And you yourself could use the root account if you want to change something? Linux should be able to do that easy
@@archma9e_879 the default ui is steam big picture like on the steam deck. The settings menu there is what I'd like to restrict. I'd also like to restrict their ability to mess with the per-game settings if possible. Basically I want them to only have the ability to install/uninstall and play games.
Not only is no-one impulse buying PS5 Pro, they're probably not impulse buying the normal PS5 at $450-500. At this point last gen the PS4 slim was $299 and starting to have $199 holiday bundles. Whatever the reasons this gen, market forces, global economy, hubris or some combo of the 3, this ain't the same Sony.
Wdym no one will do this? I bought an Ally X without thinking twice about it 🤣. If I was a Sony pony I would probably pick this up. 700$ or whatever that console will cost is not a crazy amount of money, especially if playing games is your main hobby.
It's so funny how apple charges over a 1000 dollars for 10 percent improvements on there stupid phones and literally everyone cheers them on but sony charges 700 for a console after just seeing millions of people buy them off scalpers for 1000 dollars a couple years ago, I mean it's no wonder they are trying this price tag out. And I just get the hunch that they know exactly who this console appeals too and they know those people will trade in there old ps5 to upgrade... so trading in my old ps5 will put the pro back at a decent price point for me personally.😅 just being devils advocate here sorry to offend lol
@@gp63 The competition is flailing: Microsoft is trying to sell a streaming service, and Nintendo is still pushing a rickety system which was barely competent 7 years ago. When it comes to mass-market premium gaming, the console market has been ceded to Sony. PS4 was facing a hungry Microsoft and Nintendo's fresh new gimmick. Without meaningful competition, there's no reason to compete.
In Europe the ps5 pro is even more expensive... Now our prices include tax and it's high (21% in my country), but for the regular ps5 if I take the US price, convert it to euro with Google and add 21% it's almost exactly what it costs here. Msrp is €550 I believe but you can find it a bit cheaper. The pro, if I do that it should be €750 or a little bit over... It's €800. And that just feels like highway robbery.
That's what I've been saying even before the $700 reveal, Valve should take the opportunity to fill the void left by Xbox in the market with their own Steam home console!
I lowkey can’t stand him. The show would be better off without him. He has a bad reputation based from what I hear on handheld groups on Reddit and Facebook.
Steam Deck has been an incredible experience I’d be very interested in a Steam console and/or eventual Steam Deck2 PS5 is the first PlayStation system since 1998 I’ve had little to no interest in and not purchased
20:23 The difference between oled and ps 5 pro is the perceived value. The presentation so far has shown nothing to justify the price of the ps 5 pro. In addition, savings have been made on materials. The STEAMDECK OLED was given to influencers early on, and they have all painted a positive picture of the new deck. Better components, better screen, better wifi and bluetooth and better battery life. It was presented as nothing but added value compared to the ps5. Especially since the oled costs only around 500.00 dollars at the mid price point and is probably the most popular oled variant. So the customer still has a choice. The comparison makes perfect sense and shows very clearly where Sony has made crucial mistakes here.
Well this is kind of a dumb point. Anybody who's been buying digital games for the PlayStation and ecosystem for the last 15 years? Obviously would rather have a PS5 pro. I'll never buy a steam deck because all my games are in the PlayStation ecosystem has nothing to do with the steam deck It's like apple versus Android. I'm not buying Apple because all my shit is on my android. Everybody that talks about going back and forth between Xbox PlayStation and steam deck. That's not how it works for like 70% of the player base. All of us have an ecosystem we've already invested in digitally.
Also there is just more games, you have access to all the Steam library, and you can use it as a retro emulation device. And the Steamdeck is portable, a PS5 Pro is not.
The mid generation "refresh" of the PS5 is pathetic. It's literally just a greedy cash grab with no benefit to the consumer. Compare that with the Steam Deck OLED and there's really no comparison to be made. Steam is owning everyone and Valve doesn't treat their customers like assholes.
@@pool842 I made the conscious decision to buy games from Steam for this specific reason. Having access to my games regardless of the device I choose to use seems like an obvious reason to purchase and use a Steam Deck, not to mention the better pricing on Valve's platform. Someday Sony might choose not to have a backwards compatible console, which seems to be a new thing for the consoles anyway (arguably pushed forward mostly by Xbox). I mean, the only thing a Playstation seems to offer are the exclusive games, which aren't all that exclusive anymore.Valve's value proposition is just so much better than what Sony is offering.
@@pool842 You missed the point. My argument is not "buy a Stamdeck OLED instead of a PS 5 pro", but "the marketing of the OLED was significantly better than that of the PS 5 pro". Moreover, the added value of the OLED is worth the higher price of the LCD models. The fact that 70% of all PS5 customers choose the performance mode could also be an indication that better graphics are not important for most gamers. An extra 350 Euros for slightly better graphics quality doesn't seem to be a good deal for most customers. And actually, I would rather buy a ps 5 than a pro and recommend it to those who have enough money. You can put your money to better use.
at minute 23 when talking about FSR and DLss and stuff, sometimes we forget the important part is the game not the looks because Us old time gamers from NES we didn't even mind resolutions or stuff like that, you just got excited because you were going to play the game
The more I read/see peoples opinions on the PS5 Pro price the less surprising it feels for me especially considering the original price point was only $600 at launch for the OG PS5. I'm not interested in it regardless, especially given that these games I would want are eventually coming to Steam (pretty much waiting for FF7 Rebirth). I haven't given it much thought but hearing y'all mention the OG PS5 digital version is $450 kind of piqued my interest. If PS5 had more 'true' exclusives then I would definitely consider picking one up. With the rise of 'timed exclusives', I feel like the last valid argument for owning a console over PC is still the matter of 'convenience'. As Bill mentioned, just slapping a button and having your TV turn on and immediately going back to a game precisely where you stopped several hours/days ago is near-peak gaming convenience. That being said, I'm more interested in the next stage of PC handhelds where we get PS5 level game performance and visuals on a steam deck sized portable device. The 'Switch 2' will probably be the only console I'm interested in picking up in the near future, and that's only if there's a new exclusive launch(Mario) game. This is one of the few podcasts that I look forward to weekly, keep up the good work guys! 🎮📺
I am so hyped for Dead Rising. Loved the game back in the day! On the question at the end I am 100% with Rich aswell on why I instantly picked the right options.
So here's my question about the ps5 pricing. How much wiggle room does Sony really have on the price here? While $700 might be slightly on the high side from what everyone's come to expect, I wonder if it was the only price that made sense in this economy. It's not like they can just go source chips somewhere else, not to mention the growing demand for AI capabilities in chips, add a dose of inflation on top of that and the price tag starts to look more reasonable if you're standing in Sony's shoes.
As a PC gamer since the 90s, the convenience factor is why I got into Xbox and never looked back. It's traditionally been the most online, cross-compatible platform out there until all the walls started coming down recently. I REALLY hope that they open up the next Xbox to basically be a Windows PC with the convenience of a console. Would be the best of both worlds.
Except the Steam Deck is a handheld and the PS5 pro is a console that can only be played while stuck to your tv. Me personally I paid the 650 for the OLED steam deck because of portability that's the justification of the premium price for me.
20:30 it is because that 650$ steam deck let's you play your entire catalogue. We are at a point the hardware in the PS5 should be back compt with every single PS game ever released if you have the media with you.
$650 for the top Steam Deck has far better positives than a $700 PS5 Pro. Doesn’t require any other hardware like a TV, chair/couch sitting space, is portable, and Steam library is much less locked down & more cross generational due to being on PC than consoles.
If someone that made predominantly PS5 videos made this show. They would have comments saying how much better the PS5 is. It can do this resolution and this frame rate , they would say the controller is better, and that they use it to watch movies. I’m saying both are reasonable. Not that the Steam Deck isn’t.
I definitely am concerned that when it comes to PS6 down the line, it’ll be like $1000. I’ll have to stick to the older consoles if they continue to raise prices.
20:37 you are missing the point of why gamers accept the steam deck oled price vs. ps5 price. The steam deck is a handheld gaming device with the power to run most triple a games and the premium version, the steam deck oled, has performance jump of a 50% increase in frame rates over the lcd version. From 60 fps to 90 fps is a noticeable difference. The amateur ps5 can already run games at 120 fps, the pro ps5 is also 120 fps. So no increase in the frame rate, and it’s not portable. With a steam deck I can 24/7 so it’s just no comparison in terms of value, the steam deck wins every time.
Sure PC settings can be complex but I've found that pretty much every game auto sets settings on the first launch and it's usually passable. I think we should encourage just playing and then one day when someone is bored in a game or taking a moment to remember a mark on a building or something as a reference point to just stop, go to the settings and just play around with the presets first and then maybe 1 or 2 other settings and see how it looks. Don't do much at once but slowly explore and before you know it, you know 80% of how to run a pc.
But we should not forget... a steam deck has a built in screen, the ps5 pro has not. So you can use the steam deck not only without joysticks, screens or tvs, you can even take it out and play everywhere. And that's an important reason in this age where mobile devices get more and more popular. And sony themselves published many games on steam, so you can even play playstation games on the deck.
I have a decent mid range pc and an oled.. i would consider a steam console with a new steam controller before considering options from microsoft or sony. Still have a soft spot for nintendo exclusives. I could do a steam deck dock situation but honestly would enjoy the simplicity of a standalone device. Wake the console and tv and input on controller power up and off you go.. as opposed to docking it, changing tv source, making sure controller is paired (which would be an extra controller that is paired to my PC) etc.
UGREEN's Uno Charger is honestly a breath of fresh air in the crowded world of tech accessories. I love how they blend creativity and functionality...who wouldn’t want a robot-like charger on their desk that also powers up four devices at once? The 100W fast charging is just icing on the cake; it’s perfect for someone juggling multiple devices and in need of quick boosts throughout the day. The quirky design adds personality to something as basic as a charger, making it feel like more than just another gadget. This is the kind of innovation that makes tech fun again!
Can’t stand the “DeckReady” guy. He just comes off as insecure whenever someone challenges his opinions. I don’t see him being a genuine friend or an asset for nerd nest.
The convenience factor argument of consoles goes out the window when you consider the ps portal, and how popular it is. You need a degree in networking to get a stable set up :)
I honestly can't even see anything being more convienent then their Steam Deck already as I just hit a button and immediately get back to playing my games and that's not even a console.
I know we try to ignore Nintendo, but they've been doing great and provide fantastic games and at decent prices for hardware (and I guess games). Sony and Microsoft are trying too hard and know their base will either buy whatever they shovel or buy it later. Maybe a crash needs to happen again to help those that grab from those two. I frankly have no horse in this race, I've abandoned anything that connects to a TV and strictly a handheld guy. I have a family, limited time already with a few hours a night, one TV for only the family so they can watch shows to be selfless, and game primarily on handhelds to game anywhere with the stop and go nature they provide. Wouldn't be interested in any more boxes connected to a TV personally.
@@da1writer1985 exactly, same here and i agree about Nintendo, they saved the gaming industry in the 80's i feel like a crash needs to happen to move forward and i feel like Nintendo will pull them up by their bootstraps again.
Someone on the panel asked why didn’t Sony go to Digital Foundry with the Pro? I think it’s pretty obvious why digital foundry didn’t get the exclusive
@@judahfalls7704 Hey I think all console gamers deserve a stable 60 frames without resolution going as low as 720p. I did see the comparison your mentioning and yes, it does look a lot better. Maybe the Pro will give gamers what the current PS5 should have. But your point is valid, it looks so much better.
What would you be willing to spend on a Valve set top box to compete with PS5 and Xbox series? The Deck is standing at $400, only $100 off from a Series X. $550 because of the Deck OLED?
Hi there Is there any point in buying the Ally X now? when there is talk about the new processors form AMD GPD are apparently going to be using the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 “Strix Point” in October
This how Sony has ALWAYS operated, even way back then. Remember the PS3 price? See how their phones were and are still priced? Remember the prioprietary storage and peripherals they always pushed? They are not copying Apple. If anything, Apple is copying them.
For Rich: You can transfer saves from gamepass to steam, but its annoying. I played 100 hours of Persona 5 then bought the game on Steam and played the rest there, but it was a process to transfer the save over.
Cloud save is such a gift and a curse, its nice to know your save is backed up but my "backed up save" has overwritten my most recent save more times than I could count, especially since I bought the steam deck.
Pro is going to be around $800 with a drive, and I'm upgrading from a base PS5, which was $500. I could have spent that money on a PC 4 years ago and gotten a really good PC for around $1200-1400.
Rather than competing against Sony, I want to see Valve work with AMD to create a Steam console that performs comparable to high-end CPUs/4090 GPU in the 1000-1500$ dollar range.
Getting rid of the disk drive completely is going to be a huge issue unless they got rid of backwards compatibility again otherwise you have to at least sell one separately like the slim
the problem i have with 700 isthat the chipset is still zen 2 hardware matching the og model. they should of at least future proofed themselves to zen 3 so if they copy this gen upgrade into the ps6 they can at least have the current gen be still worth using whilst the opening months of ps6 passes by.
I was waiting for Valve but I need to game on my main TV because my eyes can’t take sitting in front of a monitor any more (eye strain). I’m just waiting for the Lian Li A3 mATX case to start selling in Europe and then I’m adding my gigabyte 4090 AIO, and buying the Ryzen 9800, and that will be my Steam Console. I can’t wait any longer and even if Valve bring one out, mine will be better.
The price for the steam deck does make sense if you’re not looking at it as a console. It’s a pc like a laptop. You can use it to do work like a laptop and everything. The value for normal consoles doesn’t make sense.
I totally agree with the price outrage of the PS5 Pro & not the high priced Steam Deck. With that said, I think people that own & game on various devices at different price points I assume won’t complain much, but since it’s a mainstream brand like PlayStation I think it creates a lot more noise from people. There also seems to be a lot of fake outrage out there too. PS5 Pro just offers more choice to us gamers, not taking things away. Steam Deck topic on the other hand leans more to the hardcore/niche audience. I’m always for advancing tech & I will be picking one up.
Around 20:40 I do want to say, while PlayStation does provide much more raw horsepower, it doesn’t come with a monitor, the steamdeck is an all in one package, so that is worth remembering. Also it’s portable, so you could argue you’d need some sort of battery bank to run it. Still a valid argument though, just worth pointing out.
4K is still a waste of resources. As someone who went back to 1440P 120Hz from 4K, I can confirm the slightly increased pixel number changed only one thing. The number of pixels... Everything else was exactly the same, want it sharper? Just turn up the sharpness in the video settings and then you lose no performance and reap all of the benefits.
@@The_Prizessin_der_Verurteilung Yeah, I went up to 1440p from 1080p and it's nicer but there are still some pixelation, good to know that it doesn't go away at higher resolutions.
i still got a Alienware Alpha R1 aka "The First Steam Machine" it came with a i3 2 core cpu, built in 860m Nivida laptop gpu, 5200rpm drive, 8gb ram single dimm, and wifi i think 4... i have put in an I7-4785T 4c/8t cpu, 512 ssd, 16gb of ram max clock for the board forgot what it was, and an wifi 6 upgraded intel card. it works so damn well now. i strictly in my kitchen for when im cooking or cleaning and its been unfortunately is now a shadow for my steam deck. I used to play like GTA5 and emulation on it all the time, but now i just check recipes and like... this video. i love it but i just don't have a use for it atm... even the Ps4 is now jailbroken on 11.00 firmware, so i have that on my tv, and the deck. so this poor lil steam deck is just set as a kitchen aid lol. i could prob sell it and still buy n100 pc for like 120$ and the n100 would do exactly what i need to do.
comparing the value of handheld PCs and a ps5 pro isn't exactly fair with the PlayStation you can only buy games through Sony and consume media, you could literally make a game or do any of the myriad things people use computers for to make money on a Steam Deck and other handhelds
I am barely starting to put the tip of my toe on the water regarding PC gaming. I started with a Laptop but every time I wanted to play something didn’t work and it makes me not wanted to play. I end up getting a discounted PS5 and have working fine but it pissed me having to pay for online every year and I feel Sony has not been pro consumer lately. I end up getting a Steam Deck after that and has been my absolute favorite platform to play is like getting all the good things about PC gaming without the bad one my only draw is not being able to play the most recent AAA titles in my Steam deck and I know I have the PS5 for that but I am seriously considering jumping back into the PC world (this time not with a laptop but with a real PC) after looking how expensive consoles are getting. The price gap is so so close that if you think about it paying for online service and been tied to the PS Store which tent to be way more expensive than Steam it actually bring the price closer and closer to the point that easy to use end up been the only selling factor for consoles this day. So even if it’s scary when things don’t work and I willing to learn and put the extra work and not feeling scammed. Idk just my thoughts maybe there are other things I am not considering. I feel the price of upgrading PC in the future will also be cheaper than an inevitable PS6 where I will have to start my library from 0. As a point to consoles I have to said I love the Dual Sense features even if only 4 games use them.
22:20 LOL, all things he mentioned is on consoles right now (except for a Nintendo Switch), long updates, waiting to boot , tweaking the settings for HDR, performance, resolution, raytracing...
Now that handheld PC’s have advanced enough to play AAA games at 45 to 60+fps (granted at low to mid setting) I am done with consoles. I always hated rebuying games every new generation and up until recently, there wasn’t much backwards compatibility. With PC handhelds I can play games that I purchased 15+yrs ago on steam and now you have some what of a variety of operating systems you can load to customize your experience (windows, SteamOS and steamOS variants) if you want more of a desktop or console like experience. Also, with PC handhelds there are more store fronts (competition) to drive game prices down.
Good thought experiment when you guys were talking about a theoretical $850 steam machine with equivalent performance to a PS5 pro and how that would be a slam dunk. Goes to show how badly Sony’s bumbled the marketing on this.
I would like Valve to compete but it will only work if they go with the console model, like they have with the Steam Deck. Fixed hardware that they eventually improve in 4-5 years.
The comparison between the pricing of the Steam Deck models and the PS5 pro is a bad argument, because in the case of the Steam Deck, users have options to offset the cost of the fundamentally different model of device, compared to the PS5 Pro and PS5 pricing. If you were to take the OLED Deck out of that, it's still the option of ofsetting the price of the device directly, since the PS5 Pro isn't the same thing as the PS5 hardware wise, it's a different model (which means the experience has larger differences at a base level of use, unlike Deck versions where the differences are middling stuff like storage size, or screen type which itself can be offset further from alternatives like screen protectors and SD cards). Pricing between the PS5 and Pro models cannot be offset from their base price, and the differences in experience are much larger between them. The conparison is relative to the differences between the base price of the Deck and OLED Deck *as different models*, which were priced in a way that allowed users to offset the price they're paying to still get the base device at more reasonable prices
Even at that ridiculous price point, the PS5 pro is a good way for most regular people to game. The average person doesn't care about fps as much as visual fidelity. So as long as it looks good on their 4k tv, that's all that matters. The PS5 pro is the easiest way to do that. I would still rather stick with pc but the nerdnest nation is not the rule but the exception.
Sony themselves said most people choose to play games on performance mode, and the majority of a console's userbase is casual, so I don't think you're right about that, people prefer fps over visual fidelity at this point, I mean if you look back at the best selling consoles it actually makes sense, the console with the best visuals is never the best selling of its generation.
One of the problems that a lot of people have is that they've forgotten that Sony was the Apple before Apple. Or technics. Pick your brand. You have to remember that the walkman was a premium expensive product it was out of the reach of most people. Sony Trinitron TVs top of the line massively expensive. Sony for a long time were prestige electronics. But you're in the '90s that crown slipped so the products had to become cheaper to stay relevant. And this is not the first time that Sony's tried to push their prices back up to where think they should be. Look at the launch of the PS3 and how expensive that unit was. Big problem we have here that they don't really have any substantial competition. Microsoft seem to have given up on consoles. Nintendo is resolutely doing its own thing. The next few years will be a perfect opportunity for someone to slip into the market and do an Xbox or do a PlayStation 1 and launch something incredible that blows everyone's socks off. The move to PC architecture may have been good for manufacturing, but it seems to me that it's stifled innovation and pushed up prices for the consumer.
@@NerdNest You missed the stay rad outro again. I was trying for a funny. Clearly failed. Was more to add to engagement anyway, so even failed funnies help.
FPS/CRPG sounds like games like _Eye of the Beholder_ or _Grimrock,_ unless you think them having real-time combat is a problem. There is always _Shining in the Darkness_ for turn based combat.
I think what I’m the most confused about the price in relation to the ps5 lifespan. It seems late in the life cycle to drop that much money. With big pc purchases, at least you know you don’t have to get an entire new pc to squeeze a bit more out of it
For that price im going to upgrade my pc. Won't be ps5 pro levels but it's gonna be good. I'll grab the Pro later down the road second hand like I did when I bought the ps4 pro
I don't know about anyone else, but I think it's also high time Sega return with a bang, by bringing a new Sega console and upsetting the video game hardware balance.
A Deck vs any console, that console will come out the loser. Because of the MASSIVE catalog of games that can be played on a Pc (Deck), and the fact the software is much cheaper over time on the Deck (Pc). A console is a walled garden that can't compete on the gaming side, due to a lack of backwards compatibility into all it's prior generations( let alone having countless 10's of thousands of games). The final straw is the PS is not a complete device. Not only are there add-ons right out of the gate, you need a nice TV to take advantage of it...but all you need to game on the Deck is the Deck itself...nothing else. Then there's emulation. That alone will bury you in games. I easily will pay $650 for an all in one open gaming unit that does everything. A console...I'll pass.
Wait…PsReady? I’m subbed to Deck Ready. He has 2 channels? And Rich, I feel like you’re missing out playing Astro on Portal! The little sounds that come out of the ps5 controller as you’re playing on tv make it so much more immersive. ONLY reason I don’t play it on my portal. 😋 Also YES Tony Hawk pro 5 was TRASH 😂😂 I said that WITH you. Lmao
It's tiresome when people compare a $700+$80+$30 PS5 Pro cost to a Steam Deck OLED that starts at $550 (not $650), and then say, "See? It's the same!" No, it's not. I didn't even include the cost of the PSN online matchmaking and online saves per month (or year). It's an absurd argument to try and make PS gamers feel better about being fleeced.
I do wonder, if the left side is all Resident Evil games and the right side is all games except Resident Evil games, would Jimmy pick the left side? It sort of sounded like it, but I have a hard time believing it...
lol i have a PS5 I have the 25th anniversary edition of GT7. I Play the included digital PS4 edition of GT7 because I got tired of swaping the disk because Gt is my go to game when I have nothing to do. and it looks great. besides the load times I barley noticed the difference. GTY dosn't need 8k
"Consoles are cheaper than PCs" Sony: Are you sure about that? PC has more exclusives than the PS5, even the Virtual Boy has more, the 32X has more and that only has 40 games in total. It's very sad. I harbour no excitement for any hardware outside of Nintendo hardware now because I enjoy seeing what they'll do next, I moved to PC after the PS3 Cbomb, PS4 Cbomb, PS Vita death, Xbox One fiasco and have never looked back except to my older SEGA systems and Nintendo hardware. Either Sony gets competition, or Nintendo is the sole saving grace for console gaming. Either way Sony's not saving anything.
@@NerdNest I would think that but I think “bigger number better” people are gonna lean into it. Also I think the pro might be the best ray tracing experience you can get on a console and people want reliable game play with a game like that. also I’m willing to bet gta6 on pc will be a delayed or a mess. Maybe I’m wrong but historically gta on pc has been an after thought.
Phones went from $300 to $1000+, but consoles must be $500 forever. Oh, and you need a $1000 a year subscription for phones to actually function as phones, but console online services should be free.
To the point of "why do people spend 700 on a Steam Deck but not on a Playstation". I can`t speak for all gamers but the value proposition in my head is that 700 is not the final price for a console at least not if you want to play online. Lets say the console has a 10 year Lifespan then I have to get 10 years of online subscription for it that is easy 1000 bucks likely more on top of that 700 and now we are at 1700 for a console. To me 1700 is eighter a very nice Gaming PC setup or a Steam Deck with a lot of deep discounted games.
@@NerdNest oh good, I'm glad to hear that. Thanks, Bill, wasn't expecting you to answer me 😅 While I have the chance, I really enjoy this podcast with you guys, thanks for all of your hard work
Gamers care about performance, and the ps5 amateur can already run games on 120 fps, there is no reason to upgrade to ps5 pro without any jumps in fps it can handle. There is no amount of marketing that will change the value they offered to me, especially with that price point, and the online gaming tax Sony makes you pay. I’ll just buy a steam deck and buy a nice dock to play on my tv when I want to do some console gaming.
Good opportunity for Valve to introduce a cheaper 'Open Source' console Running Steam Store as well as allowing GOG, Epic etc.. very DIFFERENT business philosophy to traditional console wall gardens.
I think if Valve ships a box with SteamOS on it, AND it gets big traction...enough to really compete with Playstation, we'd see the other stores on that box very quickly.
I can see a big difference of value between the money you spend on a PS5 that mostly plays PS4 games and the Steam Deck that plays most Steam games, gets free games every week on GOG, Amazon Gaming, Epic and also emulates everything from Atari to Switch.

Yeah, I don’t have a steam deck I gave up on handheld when my eyes got too bad and looking at handheld just gives me a massive headache. I play a lot of FPS games and I’d rather play on console and turn cross play off to avoid the cheaters and hackers.
I would be very interested in a valve console
You can buy one right now. It's called the Steam Deck.
@@t.c.b4722It also going by another name. It’s called a computer hooked up to the TV.
And the steam machine they already failed with.
@@CornyPuddle it would be awesome if they just bought the XBOX hardware compartment from Microsoft and make a Series X with Steam OS
No, console games have evolved inside a generation since Nintendo was using special chips in their cartridges to increase performance and Sega was doing add ons like the Sega CD and the 32x.
the generations are getting longer, they used to be consistently under five years, and the pro isn't meant for more than 10% of console buyers.
I think that consoles is for people don't want to run their software after a couple of years.
If you want to keep running your software bought in 1985 you just buy a PC.
(Yes, you can run real mode 16 bits application baremetal in actual hardware)
SteamdeckLCD 64gb normally 300 now 265 quid. So pretty cheap. And you can upgrade the SSD real easy.
There is no better way to start the day than listening to all your favorite people, thank you all the staff for the awesome job
Oh, that's a great idea
This would have been half true in a world where scalpers don't exist.
If there ever was a time, it's now. That's what I think. I actually think Valve is just going to continue to grow at a pretty massive rate.
Glad to see Jimmy on again! Also glad he's been putting out more DeckReady videos.
I lowkey can’t stand him. The show would be better off without him. He has a bad reputation based from what I hear on handheld groups on Reddit and Facebook.
Steam Deck has been an incredible experience
I’d be very interested in a Steam console and/or eventual Steam Deck2
PS5 is the first PlayStation system since 1998 I’ve had little to no interest in and not purchased
Same. I've owned every PlayStation console up until that point, but the PS5 doesn't appeal to me at all. I've gone almost fully to Steam now.
I Valve released a console with free online, they'd clean up.
Hell yeah they would. Any console that offers free online multiplayer gets a minimum of 3 purchases from me. 1 for me and 2 for my nephews
Having DeckReady on the nerd nest, I’m in a lot of handheld groups on Facebook and they all agree that guy is insufferable.
at minute 23 when talking about FSR and DLss and stuff, sometimes we forget the important part is the game not the looks because Us old time gamers from NES we didn't even mind resolutions or stuff like that, you just got excited because you were going to play the game
They don’t need a valve console, incorporate a dock like the switch that you just drop the steam deck in and play it like a console.
I use my deck docked all the time, but would like a console also with higher specs and no screen or battery.
@@roz1281and anti cheat
@@roz1281 The dock can be the console, Giving Steam Deck 2 a power increase.
Also, the OLED screen and better battery life improves your WHOLE Steam Deck library while the PS5 Pro only improves a select number of games.
@@S1RLANC3 Yes very true.
This how Sony has ALWAYS operated, even way back then. Remember the PS3 price? See how their phones were and are still priced? Remember the prioprietary storage and peripherals they always pushed? They are not copying Apple. If anything, Apple is copying them.
I'd be inclined to agree if the Apple Pippin hadn't come first.
But yeah, Sony and consumer friendly go together like milk and a Soda Stream.
Eackly to me, since I was kid in the 90s I've always seen Sony as a premium brand
For Rich: You can transfer saves from gamepass to steam, but its annoying. I played 100 hours of Persona 5 then bought the game on Steam and played the rest there, but it was a process to transfer the save over.
I ordered the 512 GB LCD Steam Deck for 350. Excited to play around with it.
And the great thing is that it can still be used for desktop stuff in a pinch, unlike a console.
Is there any Big Picture extension for music ?

Would be a good idea, but they'd have to do way more testing to make sure games are compatible. Steamdeck verified is a joke sometimes.
Better question. SHOULD consoles be saved?
Around 20:40 I do want to say, while PlayStation does provide much more raw horsepower, it doesn’t come with a monitor, the steamdeck is an all in one package, so that is worth remembering. Also it’s portable, so you could argue you’d need some sort of battery bank to run it.
Still a valid argument though, just worth pointing out.
Yes, more Linux-based, Valve-branded computers please.
My only concern is going up to 4K, how much will it cost to get at least 30-60+ FPS?
It could be amazing if it targeted 1080p with good upscaling technology to 4K. That could be a compromise to get the price down with high FPS.
4K is still a waste of resources.
As someone who went back to 1440P 120Hz from 4K, I can confirm the slightly increased pixel number changed only one thing.
The number of pixels...
Everything else was exactly the same, want it sharper? Just turn up the sharpness in the video settings and then you lose no performance and reap all of the benefits.

comparing the value of handheld PCs and a ps5 pro isn't exactly fair with the PlayStation you can only buy games through Sony and consume media, you could literally make a game or do any of the myriad things people use computers for to make money on a Steam Deck and other handhelds
I know if Valve puts out a(scalable) console, I'm in. Esp at a competitive $point.
I always had issues with the disc getting stuck in my ps5 and it’s always only movies that do it
22:20 LOL, all things he mentioned is on consoles right now (except for a Nintendo Switch), long updates, waiting to boot , tweaking the settings for HDR, performance, resolution, raytracing...
Valve already tried that how that work put for them
Good thought experiment when you guys were talking about a theoretical $850 steam machine with equivalent performance to a PS5 pro and how that would be a slam dunk. Goes to show how badly Sony’s bumbled the marketing on this.
Doubt valve would charge that much, as price point is a determinant. But yea, Slam dunk
I think Valve could make a very powerful system that would not cost nearly that price because they would make up that price on the store.
Putting those side by side comparisons was such a mistake. showcasing fps boosts may be been more effective
I agree
Seeing a pattern here that I'm not a fan of, vis-a-vis the "stay rad" outro.

I choose the left side!
Also YES Tony Hawk pro 5 was TRASH 😂😂 I said that WITH you. Lmao
He also has a horror movie channel
It's tiresome when people compare a $700+$80+$30 PS5 Pro cost to a Steam Deck OLED that starts at $550 (not $650), and then say, "See? It's the same!" No, it's not. I didn't even include the cost of the PSN online matchmaking and online saves per month (or year). It's an absurd argument to try and make PS gamers feel better about being fleeced.
PS5 Starts at $450
Interesting is what will be the price for the future Sony handheld. If it’ll be near 1000$ it will be the next nail in Sony’s coffin
I do wonder, if the left side is all Resident Evil games and the right side is all games except Resident Evil games, would Jimmy pick the left side? It sort of sounded like it, but I have a hard time believing it...
If you're not paying $10 for GamePass Ultimate per month, you're doing it wrong
Is it? I assess that the next Xbox will have Steam. Something like GamePass+ with Steam. The ultimate gaming console.
The difference is the steamdeck is the same power it's just memory and screen the ps5 to ps5 pro is actually power difference
But the PS5 and the PS5 Pro play the same games.
It’s more likely that they know how much Microsoft intends to charge for their next console.
lol i have a PS5 I have the 25th anniversary edition of GT7. I Play the included digital PS4 edition of GT7 because I got tired of swaping the disk because Gt is my go to game when I have nothing to do. and it looks great. besides the load times I barley noticed the difference. GTY dosn't need 8k
"Consoles are cheaper than PCs"
Sony: Are you sure about that?
GTA6 is gonna move the ps5 pro, as soon as everyone realizes how good gta6 looks on it.
I'm betting we don't see massive jumps in performance for a game like GTA6 which will likely be CPU bound.
Kind of curious how mad Bill was after recording this about the swearing 😅
I’m not at all
@@NerdNest oh good, I'm glad to hear that. Thanks, Bill, wasn't expecting you to answer me 😅
While I have the chance, I really enjoy this podcast with you guys, thanks for all of your hard work
i like the convience of console although i still love my rtx 4070 TI super pc but find my self booting up my ps5 alot more
Gamers care about performance, and the ps5 amateur can already run games on 120 fps, there is no reason to upgrade to ps5 pro without any jumps in fps it can handle. There is no amount of marketing that will change the value they offered to me, especially with that price point, and the online gaming tax Sony makes you pay. I’ll just buy a steam deck and buy a nice dock to play on my tv when I want to do some console gaming.
Did I miss the part where you talked about Valve? Or is the title just not indicative of the content?
Good opportunity for Valve to introduce a cheaper 'Open Source' console
Running Steam Store as well as allowing GOG, Epic etc..
very DIFFERENT business philosophy to traditional console wall gardens.
