@@joeymadara7266I was just about say this. It just has such a primal energy to it! It also just works really well at building tension before a main riff drop or breakdown.
Hey dude really love your lessons. I’ve been playing drums for 30 years but my son has just stated learning and has learnt a lot from your videos. Good on you mate for taking time out of your daily life to teach people your skills. I wish I had more time to teach my son. But with your videos one can watch then replay again. Keep up the good work
Trapped under Ice - big kiss goodnight (poster behind your back) I like it Not only people can learn about drumming, but also pick great albums from posters Great editing and cartoons in the beginning
Please keep making these kinds of videos dude. You are literally the only person on UA-cam that teaches this genre of music. And the way you break down each drum beat makes it easier for me to learn it. Please keep doing the LEARN 5 HARDCORE/PUNK beats. Maybe if you could, do some slower break-down type beats. That'd be cool. Anyways, keep on keeping on ✊ ive burned through all your videos like 5 times a piece so we need more stuff lol
Thank you! I am planning on making more videos, just been too busy touring/working so when I get some more free time I’m gonna bust some out for sure!! 🤠
Man, this is a really good video. Was trying to explain a beat at band practise, very badly, but I found it here. It's great you got the different tempos. (It was the 'reverse fast beat' I was looking for!)
I just found this channel on accident. And your video is golden. Everything warms my heart right here. Hardcore how I love it. Subscribed. I just started out on drums and have no clue where to start. I think the standard rock beats needs to be the one for now.
im not a drummer i just do some midi drum maps by watching i can take points out of this so that my drums plays like a human being not a computer :P but finally someone made a video about hardcore/punk beats! dat big kiss goodnight album cover is sick!
I played drums for Sick Pleasure and Code of Honor back in the 80s, and I remember trying to talk Al from MDC out of playing so fast. The same songs would just get faster and faster until they went by in a blur, and Al's beats were turning back on themselves and losing all tension and dynamics. Speed Rules OK? I don't know. Anyway, I really admire your drumming and you remind me a bit of Chuck Biscuits. Which is a compliment!
That rules!! Thanks for the kind words! I love those Danzig records so I definitely take that as a compliment! Funny that sometimes playing things too fast can really take away the groove! But I have that problem too when my adrenaline kicks in playing live, I tend to play everything way too fast haha
Thank you Mr. Drummer Guy, this was so useful. Designed for people like me who just need the basics. I finally know what blast beats are, despite playing a version of them for 15 years. Several horns up.
Nice, thanks for posting. Does anyone know who or when the heel toe beat started? I first heard it from NOFX and then all the Fat Wreck Chords bands seemed to do it. We called it the skip beat, not sure why. I was in several punk and hardcore bands in the 90s (bassist) and almost none of the drummers I played with could pull it off.
This is a great video. The fast beats you play are proper. Most hardcore bands can’t play this properly (alot of tough guy hc) and it just sounds very underwhelming. You did it right and this is what makes or breaks or hood hc band imo
Way late on the answer but i've always heard the floor tom mosh beat called war drums in the context of metalcore/hardcore, no idea if there's a better name out there but that's what I think of when I hear it!
@@PrettyCoolDrumShow Yeah, they're a death metal/grindcore band that includes Pete Sandoval from Morbid Angel on drums. (If you're joking I'm sorry if it went over my head.)
Thank you so much! I've finally found a bit more time to practice and your videos have helped me so much. I especially like part 2 punk/hardcore beats. I am looking to learn a drum beat similar to IDLES "White Privilege" or "Well Done". Any chance you could help? :) :) Thanks again!

Who are you? Are you in a band? You should if you're not, but you missed very important punk beats that I've been playing since 1980, and my friend Erik Sandin displays what I'm referring to very well in his body of work. Those early beats are different than what you're playing here. Those lightening double kick snare patterns were taught to me by Erik. We used to jam out in his basement in 1983-1984. Also research the D-Beat under my pals Channel, Spike T. Smith to reference the D-Beat you've left out here that are is bit more important falling in the timeline of punks beats that are all mainly rock beats sped up, and the ones you've chosen here are basic/standard punk beats that also bleed over into metal crossover '85-'86, otherwise very well done Tommy. 👏🏻😃👋🏻🥁 Time to make a top 10 list! Lol!
Hey Brian! Already beat you to it (hehehe) as I just posted a d-beat lesson video a couple days ago, you should watch it and let me know if I’m doing it any justice! Also, notice how the title of the video is called “5 punk beats” not “all of the punk beats” so naturally there will be some beats missing from the video since there’s more than 5 beats used in punk and hardcore. I plan on making more videos every week so I’ll eventually have them all covered, I hope. Anyway, I appreciate the support! I grew up listening to NOFX, and Erik’s drumming definitely influenced me when I was starting out especially the double kick pattern you referenced. Thanks again!
No I’m not being that asshole commenter on UA-cam but those aren’t triplets in the Tom breakdown part, they are hits on the last 16 note before the following beat in between the 8 th notes..great job as well
I also just call it the “punk beat” some people call it “d-beat” too but I think d-beat is more specific to early punk/crust bands than the term “punk beat” since that kinda covers all variations of it
@@skwishydude both terms are applicable to this beat, you can call it either thrash or skank. Eugene Ryabchenko has an awesome and very descriptive video on skank-beats as well.

That floor tom groove is what gets people Two steppin
Beat 4 is my favorite. Especially when the toms just keep cycling after each snare hit. So good.

There's just something mad satisfying about pattern 3 whether reversed or with the bass drum on the downbeat instead of the snare
