That expression at 00:30 pretty much sums up what an amazing composition this is. Great great lesson and a true tribute to the master craftsman, Mr Knopfler. What a wonderful track and truly elaborate in the way it is structured. This is the way music is meant to be. In a world dominated by three chord and 4 chord songs, these are just stand out records that will live forever. Sorry, getting carried away here but I have always believed that Mark Knopfler is just way above everyone else. And Justin does true justice to a stellar record!
sudhindra srinivas Agree with everything you have said but there is nothing wrong with using 3 or 4 chord songs. Using many number of chords does not mean good music. It is what you do with it that matters and not matter how many chords are used.
I'm a new learner of electric guitar in Spain I have got difficult with English language but I want to say that music is an international language and a good way to learn something about beauty !Thank you for your videos!
I have been waiting so long for a proper lesson on this song, especially since Mark Knopfler uses so many different licks throughout this song. Best lesson to start this year with! Wishing Justin and everyone a happy new year! Thank you so much for all your free and excellent content!
Best lesson ever on the best song ever! I'm for shure not the only one who deems Mark Knopfler for one of the greatest guitarists on earth. And it was one of his concerts, which I was lucky to experience live, that made me to learn guitar and thereby changed and enriched my life. MK is such a fantastic and unique artist. He makes his guitar not only play notes, he makes it talk to you, moan to you, carry you away, reveal the instruments soul to you. Thanks Justin for let us learn his songs and let us participate in MK's work of art. If you think about even more MK songs, what about "So far from the Clyde" and "Sailing to Philadelphia"?
It was hearing Mark Knopfler play this back in '85 that made me rush out & buy my first electric guitar. 30yrs later it still inspires me.. Like you said here, it's all about his delicate touch & tone. One of the greats!
Totally flabbergasted at how you catch the feel and touch so well, incredible teaching , even after playing properly for 30 years I still pick things up , the feel in this nothing short of incredible. Loved this
Just go to UA-cam looking for a good tutorial of «Brother in arms»... And I find yours in the first video of my subscriptions! It looks like this is your New Year's gift for me, hahaha. Amazing and fun tutorial and perfect sound.
Instead of the volume pedal you can simply use (on strat) the volume knob on the pickguard. You can twist it with your pinky (which leaves other fingers for picking) to get a similar effect.
If you turn up the volume on the brothers in arms cd you can hear the lic just after your last one here, it just finishes that little bit off superbly. Absolutely has to be in the top 10 greatest songs of all time IMO.
Justin tbh i learned playing guitar with Marty schwartz 'cuz you were too difficult for me but now i keep learning with you 'cuz i have reached your level ... Thanks for amazing song. To me this is the best song ever along with Wearing the inside out .. Keep Doing it justin you are great !
I don’t think I can stress enough how helpful this video is! It’s really helping me learn this song. Beautiful melody. Amazing teacher. Thank you, good sir!
This is one of the greatest composition ever written, imo. And definately one of my favourites of all time. I was learning this piece by recordings for years, listened to it thousands of times... And I never get tired of it. Endless, eternal composition. Mark Knopfler is Genius. And still I don't like what I hear when I sloppy play it, can't even be near with Mark, ha-ha. However I found this lesson and I like your expression so much. Great, Justin. Thank you for all your videos. I found you recently and you are great, mate. Go on the same spirit!
Justin, Thank you so much for your in depth lesson on this song. Great tune and has these cool almost mysterious sounding lead runs over the chords. I have been playing guitar since I was in 7th grade and now 50 years later I am still uncovering things to learn on guitar. Alway amazing to me a song with the same chords we know in certain combination take on a whole new feel. Although I was never a professional player and work as a commercial artist I take daily breaks from my paint or digital screens to turn the amps on and pick the guitar up. You are such a great guy and great guitar player and patiently going through the song. It's funny I've bought the sheet music and its great to see you and hear you explain the song. Some of the sheet music is not accurate although Hal Lenord usually is. You are a pleasure you spend time with in UA-cam. Even though we don't know each other I feel like I get to know you in these lessons. You're calm and cool guy. I work with a great guitar player and teacher in the San Francisco Bay area, Jim Gleason. I don't think he minds that I go off on myself and explore other songs outside of my theory or songs I am working on with you. I feel lucky to know and work with Jim but if I didn't have him as my option I would sign up for Skype lessons with you. IF you do that. I would guess you have students you work with around the globe with Skype lessons that work pretty well. Cheers!
Justin, I've watched many of your lessons. I must say I'm not all that terrific but you are always encouraging all the way through and that means a lot to keep moving forward. So just wanted to thank you.
I first heard dire straits only a couple years ago. And this song is one of my favorite. Thank you Justin for a great lesson!!! You are the best teacher on UA-cam!!! Greetings from Russia.
This is great, thank you! I'm nowhere near ready to learn that yet, but I'm glad to see it's here when I am ready. I can only imagine the amount of work you put into figuring all this out so you could make this video.
I'm sure you have put many years and countless hours into your playing but God has truly blessed you both with talent and with a great gift for teaching. I will be performing BIA as a pre-service opening song at my church in two Sundays (day before Memorial Day - US) - couldn't do it without the help of your video. Thank you!
I am on the final lead break. And yes, it has taken me quite a while to remember all the breaks. For me it's just repetitions and getting the finger memory. You are a great teacher and very soon now l will be able to play it second nature. 😀 thanks, and lll be back as my only tests now are playing along with the recording until perfect . ✌ 🎶
Wish i could like everyone's possitive comments, found so many awesome vibes in playing my guitar, 3yr. All thanks to Justin's passion and time for us, big Thankyou dude!!
Thanks for the great lesson. I was struggling to get the fingering for the main solos - until I watched the original video, and noticed that Mark plays them in a higher position on the lower strings. Transposing the fingering suddenly made so much more sense to me and made it pretty straightforward to play. Perhaps if anyone else is having difficulty with those passages - consider the alternate position.
Justin, you are a brilliant teacher, I am making Sultans of swing my winter project, thank you so much for making the time to teach. Just the right amount of instruction and playing, thanks mate
Justin, you are such a genius in music at such a young age and equally an extra ordinary good tuitor for so many learners its amazingly outstanding service. GOD BLESS YOU. Please also go slow step by step like Bretpapa on his Pink Floyd numbers. I am sure you will hit the jackpot. You are a musical boon in disguise in todays world. Honest appreciation.
Thanks man that you showed the real chords.Everybody plays with kapodastr and leave the wrong tabs.Eminor,C mayor,Aminor and so on....Your tutorial is the best!!!
Its a hauntingly beautiful song and You do it justice in the lesson . I just heard him talk about the celtic influence in his compositions and it clearly evident in this one . Beautiful .
Yes thank you Justin you do indeed do credit to this incredible tune. I too think this is how music should be played and is why Peter Green of the 60's and early 70's is my favourite guitar player. Mark Knopfler however has a created a true masterpiece here and it was covered by Joan Baez.
The album was the first one I bought. love it. l am now playing, if you can call it that, if I am able to play this , before I am one of the men that has to die. I will be a very happy man. Thanks to you
Your the best teacher I've found. Love the Mark K. stuff , Like Sultans of Swing , still working on remembering all the changes. But has taught me so much, just like this lesson, all the double stops and other "tasty" licks , Thanks again.
Justin, thanks so much. I'm only half way through and it's taken me a couple of hours to begin to digest what you've shown. An amazing piece of work here. Some cash will be coming soon.
With regards to all of the chords Justin shows you how to play in the first part of this fantastic lesson, he is using 3 fingers on all of them on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings.. and his thumb on either the 5th or 6th string. The first G# minor (in tab) would be (1st string) 4 (2nd string) 4 (3rd string) 4 (4th string) 6 (5th string) 6 (6th string) 4 but he only plays 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th string

Thank you Justin for this lesson for this great song. I am starting using electric guitar and I found it easy to follow your instruction. It is not too slow or too fast to me. It took me a week to learn it but i am proud to be able to play it in front of my friends. Respect!
Seen this 197 times and it is still interesting. After an half year I am half way. Great instructions. ( Build my own guitar and this is my first song !) Rob
Darned... i promised myself i would learn this. You just showed me what a task I gave myself. But highly appreciated. I'll get back in a year or so, if I don't break my guitar in frustration;) Well done.

Wondeful lesson Justin. As always. When I listen to the original, I can hear more 6-8-6 on the D string than 6 on the D string then 3 and 4 on the G string for the 2nd bar (3rd bar actually as 1st bar there is no guitar).
great one Justin...You were my favorite online teacher for mostly 2 years now..u r sympathic, I like Aussislang, and ur way to teach is the best one for me, now I am looking for the soli of all the songs u tought me; why dont u teach soli too? Brilliant lesson, like all the others in your channel. Certainly have learnt a lot from this. May I also recommend teaching the "Tunnel Of Love" by Dire Straits. That certainly has some of the best lead guitar in all of MK's career! :)
Thank you so much Justin, what a start for 2015 :D. One of my all time favorites. all the best for 2015! cheers, Ari ( remembering all great times with the group at Villa Lina & Il Poggiolo :) )
Trying to teach this song just shows what an utter genius Mark Knopfler is on the guitar.
One of the most beautiful, heartbreaking songs ever recorded.

Great lesson as always Justin. Could you please do a lesson on "Why worry"? That would be awesome, I'm having some trouble with that one.
Absolutely superb lesson. The patience you show in teaching cannot be faulted. Keep up the fantastic work. It is truly appreciated.
First time I ever watched a guitar lesson with the volume cranked all the way up! Keep on rockin' Justin, thanx a bunch!
Great lesson justin, my all time fave tune and the inspiration for me picking up the guitar as a 15 yr old in 1985, thanks as ever!

Terrific, a great way to start 2015.

Thx Justin. After stumbling thru all the teachers on you tube... yr the man.
I'm back in love with my guitar.... -we may get together again. thank you Justin!!
Behold, best lesson of the year is here already.
Have to say justin this is the best lesson to follow on the net, others over complicate everything! nice to have clear explanation of each phrase :)
With regards to all of the chords Justin shows you how to play in the first part of this fantastic lesson, he is using 3 fingers on all of them on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings.. and his thumb on either the 5th or 6th string.
The first G# minor (in tab) would be
(1st string) 4
(2nd string) 4
(3rd string) 4
(4th string) 6
(5th string) 6
(6th string) 4
but he only plays 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th string
This is absolutely astonishing but will probably take me the rest of my life to learn
Hope I make it
Brilliant Tuition Justin Well Done

Excellent lesson. I'll need to break it into chunks to master this. Thanks Justin
I know that Mark was influenced by Peter Green, so I’m not surprised by the middle pickup setting on the Les Paul, but I’m wondering if Mark actually DID use an out of phase setup on the original solo?
Also, can you give an idea of tonal control on the amp please, as well as guitar? Bass? Mid? Treb?
Great Teacher, Best lesson and easy following & explanation. Thanks Justin !!
Forget learning this,I am just enjoying your version man.
