A critical software update is required for your Mac - Problem Apple Powerbook Pro

- A critical software update is required for your Mac, but an error was encountered while installing this update.
Your Mac can’t be used until this update is installed.
“Shut Down” or “Try Again” buttons or options
What, your Mac can’t be used?! Pretty crazy.
#Apple #Powerbook #PowerbookPro #macproblems #Mac #motherboard
Apple Powerbook Pro 2016 model! MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) 2.9 GHz Intel core i7. 2TB, Memory is 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3.
Apple Support care had never heard of this problem! Both several people on the telephone support and at the Genius Bar in Den Haag. (The Apple Store, which was quite busy but did not have to wait long!)
This was likely a mother board or hardware problem. That much was clear. They had me make a TimeMachine backup, which works great by the way. Re-format the entire drive, erase everything and start fresh. The new install did not help either. Same problem and was only getting worse; taking longer to start-up each time. Every time I would start up or restart I would get told, “A critical software update is required for your Mac. Connect to the Internet now.” Or something to that effect. If I could not connect to the Internet it was a problem! When on vacation in Greece, I must have wasted 2 hours of my time trying to fix this!
Anyway, Apple fixed the problem. At their cost, of course. Was wishing the Warranty. It was the main board;
Logic Board, i7, 2.9GHz, 16GB, 2TB, RadeonPro 460, ETSI
Great computer for the rest. Would still 100% recommend it!

Thank God. That is solved. Hopefully you don’t have this issue. If you do, leave a comment, for it seemed like a rare, odd issue even for Apple! A critical software update is required for your Mac, a solution!
When I click on reinstall Mac OS X, I verify Apple and eligibility and other stuff, it then says required download missing
My dad's MacBook Pro 2016 had this!
This cropped up just today for me on my MB Pro late 2016 model. I did put in the WiFi login and it spun for a while but then came up with the error that there was a required software update. I selected ‘Shutdown’ from the two options (Shutdown, Try Again). I unplugged my dongle for ethernet and it seemed to boot up fine. I’m running 10.15.7 and up to date with patches. I’m assuming this maybe a problem from some segment of code in 10.15 that put in some firmware update that isn’t compatible with some peripherals that are connected. Just my $.0.02 worth.
And a footnote, can’t go to Apple as my machine is about 1 year out of extended warranty!
You could be right Marc. There were some good tips in the other comments here, but you can still go to an Apple repair center and let them have a look. They give you a damage report and quote.
I just started facing this issue earlier today. I didn't use the time machine for any backups because my hard disk space is really limited. And I have a lot of software tools to install. Anyway, I did a restart today when I noticed that the touchbar was unresponsive. And then I encountered the same issue. Been trying to resolve it the entire day, but no luck. I tried reformatting and reinstalling Mojave, but it didn't work either. I could log in using safe boot mode, but that was it. When I tried to log in using normal mode, it would present the same problem. If it's really a hardware issue, then I guess I am really out of luck. I bought my MacBook in early 2017. So the warranty is long over. I don't have apple care, so that is a problem. I also currently don't have the money to get it repaired, so that sucks. Personally I am quite a techie myself and also a reputable software engineer and thought leader. I don't think it's really a hardware issue because my MacBook has been working fine the last few weeks. Although lately it does seem symptomatic (external hard disks will automatically be disconnected in between sessions). I think it's more likely a software-hardware incompatibility problem. Something in the update that didn't cater for late-2016 MacBook Pro Models. Just my thought. I could be entirely wrong too. But I'm just being analytical here.
I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro Late 2017. I took it to apple service, they told me after four days that they had to replace the logic board because of some condensation problem.
The touch bar is not powering on, I'm in this critical software update "loop" and after getting the laptop back from apple, the fan is spinning like crazy, so the problem just got worse and I had to pay 25 USD for them to tell me that a full repair would cost 1.5K USD!
I came home and wiped the hard disk and reinstalled macOS Catalina 1.15.2 but after the first reboot I got the same "critical update" problem.
So reading on the internet, I found out that if you select other networks and you just select my computer doesn't connect to the internet, it will just log in fine. The problem I'm having with that is that my wifi network is saved as a known network and it's connecting to it automatically, so what I did is that I just shut off the router and voilá! I'm able to hit the login screen and use the laptop without the touch bar and with the fan at full speed.
@@maortega thats a good idea. How long could you do that ? Is your Mac still working with this solution you described? Thank you!
same problem with the same 2017 MacBook Pro 15" . Safe mode works but not regular start. ....they said something wrong with my touchpad. They said it would cost me $250 to replace touchpad together with keyboard and they will also replace my old battery ( started to display warning sign, i think 60 cycles left.). I saw few people replying who have identical Mac models. Looks like a pattern to me.... i wander if this could be escalated and proved as Apple's fault. ????
I had this issue the last year. I got an appointment at an authorized Apple service provider and they told me, this is related to a damaged SSD. I had to pay for a whole logic board replacement due to the SSD welded to the logic board, in consequence impossible to be replaced. I have a 15" Macbook Pro from 2016 and the process costs around $1,000.00. I'm really sorry for you if this happened to your laptop, but this is Apple's fault. Customers can't be responsible for design flaws inside their products hardware and software.
Thank you Alan. It really is a crying shame. These are high-end laptops. 2016 seems like a bad year for Apple. They should own-up and do a recall.
My Macbook Pro is doing the same thing but I can't even connect top a Wi-Fi. Had to use other connections and say no network. Then just keep pressing try again.
Just had the same issue and had an external monitor connected via USB-C. So, I switched to hardwired connection and removed any peripherals and that worked.
As an Ethernet connection. If you are on the latest MBP with USB-C, you need a dongle. Not sure if it will fix the issue with your machine but that is what worked with mine.
Thanks for what worked for you. I had nothing connected via USB-C though, so mine was a deeper problem.
Had this happen, clicked try again once, and when that failed clicked shut down instead. Hit power button to turn it back on after waiting five minutes and was able to sign into my account and access my desktop immediately. Commenting so folks know to try the shut down option as well.
I did that too. But I wonder how long this will work...
2021 still having this problem, it's so annoying I don't even know what to do, am tired of pressing try again
Just got stuck in this loop... tried a couple things with safe boot etc. In the end, unplugging peripherals seemed to fix it. I had an apple type c to hdmi adapter with a monitor attached, a wireless mouse dongle and ethernet adapter. Unplugged everything, it booted fine, then I could initialise the update from within MacOS leaving addition monitor unplugged and I'm back up and running. Hope this helps someone.
Good tip. Just be careful that could be a sign of a defect.
@@pijnacker01 thanks!
What if you’re booting off a external drive??
Broo..
It really worked
Thank yoh so much❤🎉
You’re welcome 🙏
Have this problem since updating my MBP to Macos Catalina..... how to fix it....... just always press "Try again"?? This sucks.....
same problem but just pressed delete key continuously after login before wifi option appears, it just logins without issue.
I have this problem. Help me guys! I try many solutions, but without sucess. :/
Yep, it’s happening to me. Reinstalling OS with command option R worked twice ... until it went to sleep. Hope Apple respects two year Australian warranty. Very frustrating, this is reminding me of the days of Windows and regedt. Very unstable and misleading error messages. Had a similar loop on my iPhone last year, had to wipe it and start again.
Love the fact you said “wee fee” . That’s what I say too!
How much they charged to replace motherboard ? Same error, gave my to Apple. First they only reinstalled OS and did not even bother to check that the error still remained. Second time they said they would do "deep scan" and they said something was wrong with my touchpad. Said it would cost $250 to replace touchpad and keyboard and replace my older battery (displayed warning) ..... in safe mode my touchpad = mouse did work so im wondering if they diagnosed it right and #2 how does the update required fits the problem of bad touchpad.....shouldn't it be Apples fault ? seems software issue to me.... ???
Sorry Dan, not sure anymore. Good luck though fixing it all, hopefully Apple will come through for you!
I have the exact same issues now! They replace the logic board, keypad, touchpad, and the same thing happens.
same problem but just pressed delete key continuously after login before wifi option appears, it just logins without issue.
[MY SOLUTION: 10.14 -> 10.15]
I tried all solutions online none of which worked for me. My solution was to make a USB installer of Catalina 10.15 (the oldest Catalina) and reinstall the system with it. My older system was Mojave 10.14. A genius bar guy told me the problem came from the incompatibility between hardware and OS.
Had the same issue yesterday with my 2016 MacBook Pro, booted up normally after removing all leads to usb-c ports, but still uneasy....
Thanks for sharing. Hopefully you'll not see that come back again!
I'm having this problem right now... my macbook pro is only 2 years old. what should I do? I keep pressing try again but nothing happens
Did ur mc book is working im having same problem i dont know what to do
Please tell us what to do i have this problem now
so they replaced the board, how much was that around? I am having the same problem
Around $900. In my case, covered by Apple.
It is the hardware problem it can fix at L2 Computer Inc.
When I updated to 10.14.6, I got this hit. :/ unfortunately, I tried 10 times, it still doesn't work.
Thank you for the warning. I will wait to go from 10.14.5 for a few weeks then!
Rita Li same happened with me ... now im unable to boot into my pc
@@NirbhayWorlikarNicksorry ,just saw your comment. My friend got the same issue but he was lucky to fix this issue. He did in this way: go to the safe mode, and remove your wifi connection, and reconnect to your wifi. Hope it helps.
Rita Li omg that’s work for me thanks
@@ritali6582 you mean remove wi-fu from known networks and reconnect it on safe mode then restart, or completely delete wi-fi option and configure it again in safe mode?
I'm having the same problem right now. I tried to reinstall, but nothing works
Good luck. Some good tips in the other comments here too.
Same issue is still happening after upgrading to Catalina...
Thank you for that. Yeah, I'm staying away from Catalina until they get it working well with Adobe InDesign and Markzware Q2ID. Many third-party developers having issues with Apple's 10.15 release, Catalina.
Have you noticed that it happens only when your battery drains down all the way? Or is it happening just randomly for you. I’m having this problem but I noticed as long as I don’t let my battery drain all the way everything seems to work fine.
Oh and this is after a complete logic board repair.
How did you fixed it?
Before trying anything radical, try connecting with an Ethernet cable instead of Wifi. My internal Wifi worked in Safe Mode, but I couldn't get online. Via Ethernet it did connect and the update was performed in 2 minutes and now it seems to be working fine (fingers crossed). So far so good for this 2016 MBP, my worst Mac experience ever...
Good tip. I tried that too, but did not work for me then.
I have same problem with same device to install mojave , so i buy an external hard drive then this massage happend to me ,, which should i do now ???
Contact Apple Support. Sounds like the same hardware problem I had.
From contact support , first he let me to do first aid ,
The basic feature for just know if there are any problem had with hardware parts then we see (check right meaning successfully)
After that , he let me to press powe button then d from that feature we will know if this problem are hardware or software
Because this feature make more deep than than the first feature (first aid)
so after that we see that , we see that there are no problem with any parts
Of hardware...
I had this issue on mbp 2017 with touch bar. Issue appeared when I tried to make catalina clean install. None of the methods did not work for me. Tried to download Sierra (the os that came with this mac) and install it, but couldn’t boot installer from usb, prohibited sign appeared. Issue fixed with internet recovery, it installed latest Sierra available for my mac and booted my mbp, then I successfully updated up to Catalina.
Did you do the internet recovery over wifi or ethernet
@@brich2929 ethernet
@@yerlikzhansabyruly thank you. I will try that tomorrow.
@@yerlikzhansabyruly is it still working?
having this now, but only after i reinstalled OS (computer was fine previously) wtf?
That’s a bummer. Did you try a fresh install? Or just even try making a new Account with Admin privledges and see if it does the same when logged into that account.
Fresh install, can only log in in safe mode
Yikes, sounds serious indeed. I’d contact Apple with the lo-down. Awful suspect that it starts after reinstalling the OS.
Wanted to clear laptop so I wiped the disk and reinstalled os. Looking online it looks like the touchbar Embedded OS was wiped to and failed to reinstall which is causing the issue. I guess safe mode boots without so its fine.....sigh....
my Bloody macbook pro doing this shit atm
This happened to me kept pressing try again, it worked for me when I got to try again and waited a little while until I pressed try again and it worked
Thanks, Yes, for me too at the start. Eventually though, that stopped working too.
Please am having the same issue, should i keep pressing try again?
Yes, keep pressing that as a work-around till you can get it fixed. Anyway, that worked for me.
@@pijnacker01 How long does it take? I was keeping try again for 10-15 times, and it didn't work out.
@@yerlikzhansabyruly I'm not sure. Can you be more descriptive?
pijnacker01 I mean that I was pushing try again 10-5 times, and I didn’t succeed. How many times required for you to pass through?
Apple is so trash for this. Had the same issue when upgrading. My Mac literally runs on an external HD with Mojave downloaded on it.
Even if it works once. It'll occur again
i had the same problem and i had to press “Try again” for 10 times...
I know the feeling!
it worked after yen times
This is bullshit, I have a 15 inch MacBook pro. I just got it reformated from the apple store, they then told me there were no issues and all with them running diagnostics and shit. Well guess what, a day after this critical issue csme back.
That’s not cool.
@@pijnacker01 Agreed, but recently I found out how to log in. Once you get the critical issue, try downloading the so called "update" and when the popup bar shows with try again and shut down, click shut down. Close your screen and do something for 10 mins, after you open the lid, you'll be able to log in.
I'm not saying this is a permanent fix, but at least you can now log in to your device instead of nothing. It ain't permanent because time by time when I sleep my computer and wake it up again, the critical issue starts and well I just do the process again.
Hope this comment helps for those who are in need of dire help.
I took it to Apple and they said that they should replace the mainboard for 700 dollars. I'm a loser idiot for buying an apple product I guess I deserved it. Never again.
This thing was in the coffin the moment apple decided to merge the SSD right into the logic board. Previous MBPs was able to be upgraded with SSDs (OWC). Suckers suck your thumbs...
Rebooting on a wired Ethernet connection instead of WIFI fixed this for me 👍
Mr Jon Kane How did you initiate the reboot? I have the wired Ethernet connection-I just want to make sure I follow a process that worked for you.
DJ Pangburn - hmm I honestly can’t remember but you’ll see in this video after clicking ‘Try Again’ it takes a while trying then comes up with another prompt with an option to ‘Shut Down’, try that 👍
So you made an 11 minute video saying just wipe the computer? Jesus
He saves.
What a waste of time this video IS!!! If you you are reading this it is later than 2020 February and you are out of Warranty ... So basically nothing but changing the mother board will FIX IT according to this bright spark. Why this he wasted 11minutes of our lives to say that I HAVE NO IDEA??
This was about documenting the entire process, then in 2018. Sorry if it did not work for you.
@@pijnacker01 You wasted 11 minutes of my life on your shit video.
