Any news on the Lexus IS500 touch screen that other YTers verified? Wondering if you just got a bunk build of the car that somehow didn't have the touchscreen equipped; everyone else reviewing the car (e.g smoking tire) confirmed the IS500 had it specced.
Only car companies that cheap out or tech companies that want to be car companies put all the buttons in the OS. And I say this as a software engineer. If I could design a car I’d put the coolest physical buttons I could, not make them little icons on a screen.
I agree but the customers Subaru gets have connotations with reliability. You could say Volvo is safe. Or mercedes is luxury. Subaru is reliable. They understand physical buttons make it reliable.
@@rahul38474 It's funny to see that even Ferrari cheap out. Have you seen Ferrari Roma that Doug reviewed a few months ago? The interior is new and they put touchscreens everywhere. But the point is that these screens are laggy as a 2010 smartphone. Also, with no haptic feedback you don't even know if you really touched the "button". This is distracting during the drive and can be dangerous. I don't wanna sound like a boomer who hates screens, but if they are less precise than physical buttons, why use them? It looks cool only until you want to turn climate control on when driving.
I'm Most impressed that they actually managed to release a new version of a car and NOT add 10% (or more) to the weight like every other new sports car has done over the last 20-30 years.
the aux jack is actually great for when a friend wants to play music from their phone while riding with you. it's much more convenient than trying to hook up their phone to bluetooth.

Yes, the back seats are for insurance purposes. It would make the car more expensive to own without them. You can easily remove them yourself. It's all about the insurance.
@@SI0AX They don't exist for insurance purposes and if you truly believe that then you need to take a closer look at how insurance companies work. The “Toyota D-4S Subaru Boxer” printing on the engine signifies that it’s a Subaru Boxer engine with Toyota’s D-4S fuel injection system which combines port and direct injection.
That's great to know! That also means it shouldn't have the big carbon fouling issues that most DI engines have. Toyota really came up with an brilliant idea with their multi injection.

I desperately hope cars like this continue for a while. Honestly, this will probably be collectible in 10-20 years. I have an FC RX7 and there’s nothing better than a lightweight manual sports car. Just so much fun without having to actually go to the track (or break several traffic laws)
@@iheartninja That's true I honestly don't remember making that comment it may have been directed towards another comment entirely or was just my manic self being jealous, so I deleted it.
Honestly the fact that this car is NA is great because it keeps the sticker price on this car below $30k and I think everyone has forgotten that we keep making formerly affordable sports cars unaffordable by having a constant push for more horsepower and added complexity
As a guy who does all his own work in his driveway, looking at the engine bay of a supra or 400z gives me nightmares. I’ve kept my 13 FRS up and running easily, and the new one looks to be more of the same. It’s a dead simple car. Love it. I dont have the skill to deal with those faster cars, but i also dont want a corolla.
The Base Mustang and base Camaro have significantly more horsepower, and both are even cheaper than this car, but they're bigger and heavier car. In reality, horsepower is cheap, lightweight is expensive.
I have a Supra and am thinking of trading for this. I build drift cars for fun, and I refuse to mess with the Supra because it’s so complex. I also used to have a HR 350Z drift car and I can’t imagine how impossible it will be to work on the 400Z with the same size engine bay with two turbos added on…
@@AkioWasRight The base Mustang and Camaro also don’t have their engines as ankle height where putting a turbo in would require a vast redesign of the car, a stronger frame, and a bigger differential. Besides those cars are in a different class of sports car from the BRZ. Have you noticed that there are almost no more small, compact, affordable sports cars anymore? Most of them got priced out of existence. Even a new Miata can run as high as $40k which is the BRZ’s direct competitor. The new BRZ is the perfect car for a young first time car buyer and that’s the demographic Subaru and Toyota are trying to reach with this car
It's crazy to me that cars like this are on the verge of extinction. Finding a simple, fun, affordable, front engine, rear drive car with a manual transmission is proving more & more difficult every year.
@@jackroutledge352 because people grow up and have families. Which probably makes uo most of the car market. Samw person that needs BRZ could get around an a bike. Plus its not a good choice for a second weekend car.
The type of people that would buy a cheaper sports car like this probably aren't able to afford more than one car, so they choose something more practical. This is perfect for someone that does want a cheaper car for the track but that's a pretty small market.

Some thoughts I have to add: Roof bubbles are not for taller drivers, they are for helmets used on track days ;) Also, every car I ever had (altough I didn’t have many) had the inside door handle work like this, maybe it’s a japanese thing. We also tried the rear seats in the old model with my friends once (all grown adults), and we could fit in, not comfortably, but this “you cannot fit anyone here” thing is way excessive, you just have to pull front seats forward a bit to give room to the ones in the back and not have all the available space just for yourself, and that’s that. Love your work, keep up!
i own the 2020 brz and got so hurt hearing him continuously hammer the old model like it was awful. it’s a fun car that’s quick and enjoyable to take corners around
In the old one 3 medium-tall adults can fit fine, though the rear passenger needs their shoes removed to squeeze feet under front seat (shoes must go in the trunk, or in a bag on the 4th seat). 6 foot is the limit for the rear head room touching the glass, and both passengers will have zero extra knee room. It's an incredible design to achieve so much with so little space. I hope those serious about vehicles have learned by now to go elsewhere for the actual facts from truly experienced drivers who understand and know how to fully use the many brilliant auto engineers' creations, combined with market-wide feedback using real world conditions.
The only manufacturer I've driven that actually managed to competently use that style of turn signal is Alfa. Literally a flick in the opposite direction just plain stops the signal. No guessing or trying for a sweet spot. How it should be in everything with that type of turn signal. Dunno why other brands have so much trouble with it. If Alfa Romeo can do something right, it really shouldn't be difficult for anyone else to do it lol.
@@ThatWasPrettyFunny Yea but they're the most useless things to pick up. Like that door handle or the blank button. He always notices the things from which he can pick on manufactures. But tbf he does sometimes notice Easter eggs like these.
1. You can open the rear seats from the trunk, there's a latch/rope like a subway train handle that you pull to open. 2. the 3 buttons for traction/track mode are there because the automatic version has a sport/ice mode. So they kept the center one empty in the manual version 3. The Subaru engineers knew exactly what they're doing not putting a turbo in it. Watch Engineering Explained's video on why the new BRZ doesn't need a turbo for its power:weight ratio (and why a turbo would kill this cars' sales). I've had my 2013 BRZ since the first year and it's hands down the best bang for the buck track car and perfect for twisties out the factory, and my daily driver. I've even car camped in it before!!! Anyone considering this new one should definitely get it. Don't buy any more SUVs!!! 😭

To be honest I was a little disappointed with how people are asking more power from a vehicle that was an homage to the AE86, which was a car perfect for mountain/windy roads, where power isn't always needed. Just like a Miata, this one ain't for straight line fun, this vehocle is for the twisty mountain roads.
2017+ (mid cycle refresh) with the MID gauge had oil temp as well. They realized these things overheat like fuck. They need an oil cooler stock, just to drive spiritedly for any decent length of time
The torque upgrade is a massive improvement. That, more than the HP upgrade, makes me very excited that this car finally has decent enough power to dart around in.
@@TheHidalgo99 I always thought the 150 lb-ft was too low in the original. About 200 would be about ideal for a car this size, but 185 is darn close and a huge improvement.

under 3k rpm they are extremely slow other choices, Mazda Miata is faster 😅 or buy a 2014 mustang V6 has 300hp🤯 just saying there are plenty of RWD options over 200hp 😇
The problem with BRZ was never power, it was lack of midrange Torque its exactly what made it feel slow and in practice also reduced its acceleration time a bit.

I feel this wasn't Doug's best review. He missed the gauge cluster looking like a boxer engine. i usually don't watch Doug reviews, but youtube kept recommending this one so I did holy crap was this full of mistakes. The engine is based on a Subaru sure, but it has Toyota's dual-port injection system, and the tuning was done in combination. So saying it's mainly a subaru engine and discounting Toyota's contribution is kind of stupid, when that is the reason why this engine compared to the last will probably be more reliable, and also makes power more reliably, and with less of a torque dip. The double bubble "for taller people" comment just made me roll my eyes. It is so obviously for racing helmets its painful
I agree with you, I currently own the 1st gen BRZ and although I don’t have much experience owning many different chassis I love my car. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. It’s light, it’s RWD, it handles like crazy and everything still feels raw and real. I hope more people take the opportunity to try out this chassis for themselves, I think it would change a lot of peoples opinion on this car.
I own a 2020 Toyota 86 GT and I love my car! I don't feel any mid-range torque dips when driving it. It has plenty of power in my opinion with just a K&N air filter.
Smaller channels picking Toyota version over BRZ mainly to get on the good side with Toyota so Toyota send them more review cars in the future. Doug is big enough so he doesn't care about that.
I’m just glad that there are car makers out there still putting out fun to drive, affordable sports cars with a manual transmission. Certainly a dying breed of transportation.
Nissan may have hit the nail on the head with the new Z. But price TBD will decide if it will compete. Twin turbo V6 does not sound affordable friendly. This may once again compete against itself, in the affordable sports car class.
So we just got our 2023 BRZ this weekend and finally have some seat time. I LOVE the look of the car and how it handles. Being new of course it feels like excellent build quality. With that, on the performance side I am a little underwhelmed with the Torque. Of course keeping the RPMs lower for break in, but this car has a long 1st gear and I can tell you are going to have to rev it to keep up with traffic. I couldn't imagine driving the 1st gen in town. The wife hates getting in and out of it to drive, which is a small negative. Car does feel a little cramped, but it's not terrible. I can see the point where people say buy this car for a track car. It does fine on the streets, but not sure you could live with it daily (if you are older like we are). Take the power issue with a grain of salt as this is coming from a Mustang guy that's used to higher HP/TQ cars, but I did have a 2018 Civic Si and that was a fun small car as well. Can't wait to get the engine broke in and see what it can really do. It handles corners wonderfully!
@@akaa3144 For sure in this market you cannot beat the price at all. Its not a fast stoplight to stoplight car, but wow will it handle some curves even in stock form. :)
Thanks for sharing. I've had 5-speed Mustangs for 30 years (Mustang Sally here ;), but due to issues with Ford's service/warranty (dealerships have had no service appts. or rentals for 2 years and I have an extended warranty), I'm looking at other options which is a bit depressing. I would prefer to go new again, so the 2023 BRZ Limited would totally work out money-wise as I'm paying cash. I'm used to my uncomfortable V6, but it looks nicer inside and out IMO. I'm worried about the BRZ having less power, requiring 93 octane, and having no option for leather seats. I really wish the interior looked more like a Mustang's and then maybe I would just go for it. Enjoy your new ride!
@@oceans.and.deserts If you are coming from a V6 Stang, you are going to notice some of that missing torque. Though the BRZ is going to make it up with being a lighter car. I do have to say again, taking curves in this car is phenomenal! The only other car I could compare the handling to is a Miata, BUT honestly I think the BRZ gives more driver confidence. For the price I would say its a good value in how crazy the market is. The boxer engine for sure is not the smoothest running engine and sounds terrible when it does its cold start cycle. LOL Once it gets up to temp though the engine sounds fine. We agree with you on the leather seats. Would have been better than the Suede, but the seats are not bad. I am worried about how long the seats will last from grabbing/rubbing them when getting in and out.The biggest issue is watching your foot when trying to get in and out of the car. 12:44 Doug, the two straps on the upper left and right is meant so that you are able to lower the seats without having to go back inside the car. Just FYI.
Exactly I think this motor is perfect and if you look at the car objectively and don't compare it to others you'll be truly satisfied with how it drives
I wish they would have updated the old taillights instead of giving it new ones, they were unique and noticeably different than any other car on the road. The new model just seems a bit more generic and pinched together
I kinda adore the kissaki style rear end on this one. It’s a lot cleaner looking. However, I did think it was a civic at first. Idk why this design is appearing on other cars.

Actually everyone wasn’t complaining so much about “power” as they were complaining about it lacking torque especially down low in the rpm range. They increased max torque by about 20% but it also comes in at about half the rpm of the previous BRZ. HP has increased but it comes in at the same rpm as before.
You've been tricked by Subaru/Toyota marketing people. If you look at a dyno graph of the 1st gen, you'll see it had almost as much torque around 3k as its peak torque. The low end torque was never the problem, the problem was always the deep "torque dip" in the middle. The new engine still has the dip, but it's not as deep, and its lowest point is still above peak torque of the first gen. Similarly, the peak torque of the 2nd gen in the ~3500 rpm zone isn't much higher than the torque plateau around 6k.

Interesting quirk about the digital gauge cluster: The right side is an oldschool backlit LCD display. As such, the display is limited to monochromatic output and predefined shapes for assigned areas. This means it doesn't really have the ability to change configuration. The center speedometer, and the left side of the cluster are backed by a single, modern, color (probably OLED) display panel, topped by the round metallic bezel shape with horizontal lines breaking it up into areas. If you look closely in the video, you can see the boundaries of this rectangular color screen behind the gauges. The interesting part, is that to create a consistent look across the gauges, Toyota/Subaru designed the left side gauges to match not only the shape of the LCD bars on the right, but also the monochrome color scheme. Even the center dial has this kind of appearance. Keep in mind, they could have made the left and center any combination of colors available--but it is mostly white, with a touch of red (and a tiny bit of green on the bottom left by the odometer) so that the LCD display doesn't look like a separate piece from the modern screen.
The most iconic feature that is startinf to fade away (which i wish wouldn't), is the old school real parking brake. The electrical finger operated one should still allow you to drift
I don't want it to be gone for the simplicity of it and the fact that doesn't need an electric motor to work, hence depending on battery to operate, which is, in my POV, a major security flow.

This is really going to bake your noodle: Pay attention how Doug is very careful with his placement of hands and fingers and how slowly he takes away the hand when he’s doing up close shots of quirks and features you can never unsee that it’s like he was a professional hand model at some point, quite a nice touch indeed (pun unintentionally intended)
The devil is in the details. Doing it too fast would attract attention to the finger, which is not where you want it, you want to place attention where the finger is pointing up. Nice catch though, I didn't notice either.
He moves his finger around the same way a mouse cursor moves in professional software tutorial videos. It gets kinda dirty when he touches the gear knobs tho 🤣
The BRZ/86 is a good driving coach because it punishes you for losing speed on corners. While the power increase is welcomed, it is still not enough to allow drivers to use the extra power as a crutch for bad technique. Well played, Toyobaru!
Yo, Doug. You can fold the back seats down from the trunk. The fabric loops behind the seats, inside the trunk can be pulled to release the latches. This was true of the 1st gen stuff as well.

Based on the primary focus of most of the other controls and displays, I’mm gonna say that the Trip Reset button is that size and prominence for track-related purposes
I appreciate that the small side panel blade behind the front wheels (that connects the side skirt and the front fender) is a standalone piece. I bet it can be removed with basic tools, and instantly give the car a more aftermarket/custom feel with wider looking fenders where a bit of the tyre shows on the side. Nice touch, and a small design detail that many people might miss at first glance. They know their audience!
I’ve been watch Doug’s videos to go to sleep lately. It’s like sitting in the backseat of someone’s car, or watching Gordan Ramsay reruns. Mad props Doug.
I love it. The increase in both peak and usable power is a big deal, and the styling is better too. They shaved a full second off the 0-60 time in the manual model. That's a lot. This car has been tested to do 0-60 in 5.8 to 6.0 seconds, and runs mid 14's in the 1/4 mile. That's decent for $30k, and a big upgrade over the outgoing model.
This is the review I was waiting for. Sure, drag races are nice, but I'm here for an exhaustive and comprehensive review of every single superficial feature of the car. Genuinely. Thank you, Doug!
I've had 2 FRSs they were both excellent. Fun to drive, great balance and handling and a huge aftermarket for parts and personalization. If I didn't have 2 children I'd be getting the new one.
It’s surprising to me that Doug brings up the HP numbers of this car & the last generation’s so frequently. This is obviously not a straight line car, it’s intended to be driving through a nice twisty back road, at the track. With the low point of gravity and a 7k redline is such a fun car you can toss around & not worry about wrecking it or getting into dangerous illegal speeds too quickly. Power in this car is not an issue if you drive it for it’s intended purpose. I’ve never owned this car but I would love to have one.

Maybe someone already commented this but, 1. The rear seats are only unlockable from the trunk so that you can store personal belongings in there and set it to only unlock with the car keys. (Pressing the trunk button locks it so you can't unlock it with the lever on the driver side) 2. The increased headspace is for people with helmets on track day. It gives that extra room for them bulky helmets - but, yes it works for taller people as well haha!

@@kaisuhina8024 even though it only has 200ish HP, this car is light, which makes it faster than most of cars these days with the same price range. Also you don't need 400ish hp to have a gun car. My dad's love his 100 HP Nissan wagon and he said it's fun to drive.

Boxer engine often has an oil leak. It costs $2000 to fix it in Japan. Some people paid $4500 for engine trouble. Subaru doesn't sell much in Japan because it takes time and money a lot after all.
Like the MX-5 Miata, they keep the power low to lower the price and lower monthly insurance costs, and if you track day it you can add a turbo or supercharger aftermarket. The older Scions had a factory turbo as an option, added by a dealer that did not void the factory warranty. The older Supra is known for its inline 6 strong enough to handle a lot of extra power, many hope the proposed inline 6 Mazdas are similar, not just an unreliable BMW inline 6 like some of the newest Supras.

Any news on the Lexus IS500 touch screen that other YTers verified? Wondering if you just got a bunk build of the car that somehow didn't have the touchscreen equipped; everyone else reviewing the car (e.g smoking tire) confirmed the IS500 had it specced.
God bless the man who left physical buttons and switches in the center console. They are way more convenient and practical than screen options.
I agree!
Only car companies that cheap out or tech companies that want to be car companies put all the buttons in the OS. And I say this as a software engineer. If I could design a car I’d put the coolest physical buttons I could, not make them little icons on a screen.

I also used to have a HR 350Z drift car and I can’t imagine how impossible it will be to work on the 400Z with the same size engine bay with two turbos added on…
I like that it's N/A as well, but not for the same reasons. Simply, I like the power delivery of a N/A engine.
@@AkioWasRight The base Mustang and Camaro also don’t have their engines as ankle height where putting a turbo in would require a vast redesign of the car, a stronger frame, and a bigger differential.
@@evanduplessis9911 Yes, that was exactly the point while making this car, they never ment to make it strong, rather enjoyable to drive.
Roof bubbles can serve two functions.

2. the 3 buttons for traction/track mode are there because the automatic version has a sport/ice mode. So they kept the center one empty in the manual version

Subaru nailed it with the design. Can't wait to see it in person.
My twisty back country road and I are going to love this car. Being a Subaru family, we own a Outback and a Crosstrek, we've (mainly me) being calling the Subaru dealer every month waiting for this thing.
Every time daddy Doug's hands meet together while he stands his left elbow lifts like a wing. I find it to be one of his many interesting quirks and features.
this is the kind of thing you can't unsee once you see it for the first time
I love when Doug takes off his showman's hat and actually gets critical. That's when I actually start paying real attention.
Couldn't agree more.
I love how you gave us a glimpse of cadillac CT5 blackwing !! 😃 Can't wait to watch your review on it 😍
Actually everyone wasn’t complaining so much about “power” as they were complaining about it lacking torque especially down low in the rpm range.
Love driving my uncles 2017 BRZ Yellow Edition. Only has 10,000 miles on it and it always gets looks/compliments. Very fun car to drive. The new BRZ looks really good and the extra power is definitely a plus. If they come out with a Yellow Edition, I would get one. Great review!

@@tone3560 true, but the interior had the black and yellow theme with blacked out exterior emblems. Only 500 of them produced. Imo the best color edition Subaru came out with for the BRZ.
Can't quantify this at all but from the get-go the first gen felt to me like it was missing something. It had a budget look and some often mentioned drawbacks. This seems just perfect. Very cool car
I felt the same way. I considered the FRS a few times but I always felt like the FRS/BRZ wasn't truly complete. These new ones look more finished and look like they will age nicely. And I'm glad they fixed the low torque band issue from the older ones.
I love this car. I don’t give a damn of power. I just love that this old school style car exists and EVERYONE should really be glad of it. Even power obsessed
No. What is “old school” about this?! Please explain how this car makes sense when you can buy a V8 Camaro or Mustang for $6k more. The only reason that this car appeals to someone is because they have some loyalty to import cars, the Toyota or Subaru brands, or they just want to be different, and don’t want to be a Mustang driver. Any objective juman that test drives this and a Mustang GT back to back would GLADLY spend the extra $6k for the same cornering and handling, and OVER DOUBLE the power and about three times the torque.

Not auto unlocking car doors with the handle is a security feature. The windows on these cars flex a lot and make it relatively straight forward to pop the door open if you can shimy the door handle. Rule of security is if a door can be easily opened from the inside, it can usually be easily opened from the outside.
maybe a E92 BMW door handle that you could easily get a coat hanger around, what object could you easily manipulate that handle with it being so ensconced in the door panel? it’s just lazy toyota parts bin specials once again

GR Yaris isn’t available in North America and the TRD Camry is a V6 Camry with a body kit and an exhaust hardly sporty same with the Avalon TRD look at dougs reviews
Toyota has no soul or character anymore and their designs suck. Long gone are the days of the MR2, Supra, Celica, IS300 and SC300/400
@@f181234 The real detail about the TRD Camry is that the V6 was only available with a more fancier leather interior. The cheap interior was only for the 4 cylinder engines. What they did was stiffer suspension, body kit and 4 cylinder interior with a V6 engine. Basically weight reduction by downgrading the interior, lol.
These cars didn’t need much of a change. More like some tweaks, and it looks like this is that. I can’t wait to trade my 86 in for the new Toyota.
I think we can all agree that the extra power is a welcome change, though. I was never a person to whine and say "oH iT nEeDs MoRe PoWeR", but the people who buy this car i'm sure will be happy for the extra power. From memory, it's an extra 18kW.
Seems like most who bought this car thought it has issues with drag, since endless body kits and large spoilers. I'm sure bolting all that plastic on just made them slower.
The motor in the previous gen sounded like shit and was gutless.
@@jamestorrens645 The main difference is the torque curve, the last one had a massive dip between 3-4k rpm which made the car feel slow, now its almost completely gone, combine that with the extra torque and hp its the perfect car for me
@@Smellslikegelfling I bet you don't like people who still own the previous gen.
Doug, I am 80% sure those straps on the back of the rear seat are to release the latches from the trunk. That is how it is on my 1st gen.
The most iconic feature that is startinf to fade away (which i wish wouldn't), is the old school real parking brake. The electrical finger operated one should still allow you to drift

@@tati-anaroseee4316 I think TheStraightPipes tried to do that in one video.
I don't want it to be gone for the simplicity of it and the fact that doesn't need an electric motor to work, hence depending on battery to operate, which is, in my POV, a major security flow.
Exactly, do you know how stupid I sound going "bro i need to replace the motor and sensor so my parking brake will work again"

The BRZ/86 is a good driving coach because it punishes you for losing speed on corners. While the power increase is welcomed, it is still not enough to allow drivers to use the extra power as a crutch for bad technique. Well played, Toyobaru!

It’s surprising to me that Doug brings up the HP numbers of this car & the last generation’s so frequently. 1. The rear seats are only unlockable from the trunk so that you can store personal belongings in there and set it to only unlock with the car keys.
(Pressing the trunk button locks it so you can't unlock it with the lever on the driver side)
2. The increased headspace is for people with helmets on track day. It gives that extra room for them bulky helmets - but, yes it works for taller people as well haha!
