2022 Toyota GR86 review! Today I'm reviewing the new 2022 Toyota GR86! The GR86 is completely redesigned compared to the old Toyota 86, and I'm going to show you all around the quirks and features of the GR86. I'm also going to drive the new 2022 Toyota GR86, and I'll show you what it's like behind the wheel.

Doug is the type of guy who makes two separate reviews of BRZ and GT86.
Well this is the sunday review for a reason
Now this is a premium comment 1 doug score😺
Well because the GR86 looks way better
Because one is Toyota and the other Subaru, so 2 different cars - that's why! XD

I like how at 12:58 Doug says he's flooring it and a VW sedan is overtaking him at the same time.

At least that's not your usual VW sedan, it's a Phaeton.
@@camilstoenescu no it’s not, it’s a cc… probably with a tune and also flooring it if Doug is actually flooring it there. But just a 2.0tsi no w8 or w12 there.
Could also be a VR6. Those can be peppy. But they’re rare.

I bought this car after my 2021 Mazda Miata was totalled in a flood. It's great and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who enjoys driving a car with good handling. It's not particularly fast but that's not why I bought this car (nor the Miata). I considered a Supra but it was too heavy and too expensive. If you're watching this video because you're actually considering buying one, I say go for it because I don't think you'll be disappointed, as long as you're aware of what this car is good at (corners) and what it's not good at (being fast in a straight line). It's amazing how even though it weighs 400lbs more than the Miata, it still handles just as well/delicately.
Definitely true. I test drove a Hyundai Veloster once. ~150hp but it could do donuts like a motorcycle. Two types of fun you can have with car, unless you can afford a Ferrari that can do both.
It can go fast as well, with mods.
@@16xthedetail76 depends on your definition of fast. So far I've only seen i believe HKS offering a supercharger kit that's supposed to give it about 330hp. That'll make it much quicker sure, but still not particularly fast. Anyone could spend similar amount of money on an American V8 and be wayyyy faster. Any serious power upgrades to the BRZ would require upgrading almost everything else (clutch, transmission, differential). Not worth the money making this particular car fast. It was built for a reason and being fast isn't it
We had the 370z and currently a GTI. Fun cars to drive but completely different to the 86/brz and miata as they are more power focused. The 86 and Miata are just super fun to throw around as you really don't need a lot of power on public roads.
@@litlemidgetful I WOULD love a Hellcat or even a scatpack.
I’d choose this over the BRZ, but I already know Toyota dealers are going to mark these up compared to Subaru.
Sadly your probably right :(
Dealership in Oakland marked their WRB brz 10k with added options totally to about 48k. Ridiculous

Same. who cares..
It's an entry-level sports car, turbos add complexity and price. Making it less accessible to beginners.
I think Toyota understands that modding community for their cars is great for brand representation.
They're providing a platform for both beginners and the enthusiasts who would increase the power regardless of its starting point
Good point, they had the same philosophy with the Supra.
All the aftermarket modding is massive advertising.
would be great if they just put the lexus 200t engine in it for better reliability, and have a turbo that everyone's asking for
That'd be a reasonable point if Ford and Honda weren't putting turbos in $20,000 econoboxes.
@@wun1gee there's a difference between a turbo for gas mileage and a turbo for performance
@@rubbertoe. is that why Ford's getting 250+ horsepower and 277ft/lbs out of a 2.0l 4-cylinder?
I got a 2024 base, last Saturday, it’s the nicest car I’ve ever owned by a long shot. I just made the break in 500mi yesterday and got to get out of 4k rpm for the first time. I almost cried, never felt so joyous and alive. Worth every penny, tons of grip.
When he says nobody's gonna use the back seat,I just think of high school when my buddy would pick up 4 of us
One of the interesting quirks is that the GR86 has a very usable numeric gauge for the oil temp, while the BRZ has an unusable "analog" style gauge.
Oil lol
It took me a second and I had to rewatch the brz vid to see what you meant. Admittedly I prefer Toyotas as well even though I ordered the brz. I wonder if there’s a flash out there that one can do to switch it to Toyotas version.
@Oy Vey get one from a dealer with lifetime drivetrain warranty
@Jewish James Bond fortunately, engines blowing up is my kink, so you’ll bet your ass I’ll be looking forward to every engine blow

@@markdempsey9099 do you think he has sex?
@@Gaudine after reviewing their quirks and features then giving them a "Doug score" I'm sure he's a 40 yr old virgin 😁
I think I would rather have a naturally aspirated engine in the GR86, as much as I'd want it to have more power. Aside from the price, naturally aspirated cars simply have a more natural and communicative feel to them, which I think is better considering that this car puts more emphasis on handling and the way it drives rather than power and acceleration.
How could get this to add 50-60 more whp without boost?
@@dmullen6996 A few ways of doing this would be increasing the engine's displacement, installing high-performance parts, fiddling around with the ECU, etc. If you still need some boost after the tune, a supercharger (particularly a roots or a twin screw) would do the job without really messing up how it responds.
NA will sound like a disturbing fly
@@omranmkv Subies typically have UEL (unequal-length) headers, which give them their distinct boxer rumble, so you can try installing those if that's the sound you're after. Otherwise, go with EL headers. They'll give you a smoother, high-pitched tone.
@@dackbowland1876 the formula for engine displacement includes bore, so increasing that should give you more displacement (I suggest looking for a professional tuner or engine builder if you want your engine rebored).
When it comes to the engine itself, I personally think it's best to leave it alone and not tune it in the first place. The car is good enough for me; I don't really need anything else from it. But if you really want the power, you need to make sacrifices. You might be speaking from an efficiency or reliability standpoint, but someone looking for a good project car to tune and race might not care if it means better performance.
I usually don't like watching dougs videos for a mechanical pov of the car, it's usually more interesting to see him explain the quirks and features, but this time he did a really good job explaining the differences between this gen and the last gen even though most people just think it's simply +.4L to the engine and new exterior. Also like doug said just slight 30hp boost would make the car perfect, luckily you can get close to that amount with just some bolt ons and a tune.
By the way, I think I know why T O Y O T A and S U B A R U won't put a turbo on this thing..
From the first 86, the GT86, there never was really any focus on power, instead they opted for better handling performance. Speed was never the priority, which is why when people want it to make it speedy simple bolt-ons would already be enough.
The reason they tend to put Alcantara on the bit above the gauge cluster is because leather and plastic *can* reflect light and sometimes be distracting (it's usually not a problem, but in a lot of higher end sports cars that are intended to be driven on race tracks and have drivers that cannot be distracted, it can make a difference). Alcantara is a comparatively more expensive material to source and work with than pleather, plastic or real leather, so it isn't often found on the cheaper versions of sports cars
which is weird because Alcantara IS plastic. People are suckers for a name though.
@@doublestrokeroll Why is it weird? It's a high quality fabric, that looks awesome, feels luxurious and is perfect for certain applications such as stated above.. It's made from plastic products bit is not a solid piece of moulded plastic.
Carbon Fibre is also a plastic but it's five times stronger than steel and twice ad stiff.. But I guess people are just "suckers for a name" huh?
@@FatCokMcgee lol....If you think polyester is the same as carbon fibre, I'm not sure what to tell you.
Take Ultrasuede, change it slightly, slap a new name on it and act like it's a "premium" product. Yep...you ARE a sucker if you think Alcantara is anything special. Created in 1970. Nobody wanted it until the name change.
Yes, it makes sense for certain applications when you're sweating in a racing seat but cut the BS of thinking it's some kind of high end product. It's polyester.
@@doublestrokeroll and carbon fiber is just carbon, what's your point.
@@doublestrokeroll lol... Alcantara is 68% polyester and 32% polyurethane..
Carbon Fibre is made from 89% polyacrylonitrile and 10% Rayon. ALL PLASTIC!!!
I don't what to tell you because you obviously take the short bus around town but it's not the ingredients that make a product like this valuable... The production process and end results make it worth a lot more than a Lego block.
You probably also think that a forged CNC machined wheels or engine blocks or engine blocks are no better than an a cast version because they are both made out of the same melted down soda cans but just have fancier names hey 🤔
Yeah I'm sure it was the name change that made the difference mate... 🤦♂️
13:00 - VW driver is like: "Yeah, that GR86 could use some more power"
I saw that too! “I’m flooring it” and getting gapped by a VW 😂
I mean it was probably a V6 with 20 hp more lol
The VR6 CCs are actually kinda rare, it’s most likely a 2.0 turbo, which make about 200 horsepower since they’re tuned for efficiency. The VR6 bumps it up to 280 though so it might be. And if it’s got the AWD option with the V6 then it’ll just scream up an on ramp lol
It’s probably the twin turbo Jetta trim
@@TheDarkPacific It was also a heavy passenger sedan out accelerating a sports car lol.
This is the most detailed car review I have seen to date! Where have you been all this time Dougy? Most UA-camrs just review the driving aspects. This GR86 review is as good as going to the dealership and viewing the car yourself. All that would be left is to simply go for a test drive of the car.

Hey Doug, the Alcantara on the gauge cluster helps with glare vs a plastic one that would reflect onto the window. Hope that helps!

another perfect review. Thanks doug
Love the energy bro!!
I think it looks a lot better than the original.
by the og did you mean ae86? xD
I think modded versions of the second gen won't look as good as modded versions of the first gen
I would immediately throw a Widebody kit with a big Wang on it
I agree overall. I just wish they had kept more of the rear end from the first gen. I think it was good looking and distinctive. The rear end on this new one kinda looks like a Hyundai Genesis or an S15. Both of which I don't love from behind.
To be fair, that's not saying much, the original was incredibly dull looking for a 2 seater rwd sports car. It's the first car I've seen that looks boring, even with a widebody kit and flashy wrap.
My favorite Honda was 2016 Accord Sport 2.4L 6MT, no turbo, no nothing. 189hp and it drove amazing. It's not about how fast you get from stop light to stop light. It's about the in-between. It's more fun to drive slow car 10/10th than fast car 5/10th.
it's better to drive fast car 10/10ths than a slow car 5/10ths. it's better to drive a fast car 5/10ths than a slow car 5/10ths.
I just bought a 2008 Honda Accord v6 for $5000 flat. Condition is 9/10, lots of upgrades, with 268HP and 248 Torque. Super fun. Gonna use it as the family cruiser.
@Roberto Vidal Garcia Everyone knows that so I shouldn't have to include it in every conversation. I've been a mechanic for over 20 years dude
@Tyler then just add a supercharger or turbo, toyota doesn't have them on bc it'll mark up the price too much which won't make it a beginner friendly car.
not how it works 🤣 it's more fun driving a fast car 9/10 times but if you have a slow car with a manual then u can still enjoy it. But that doesn't make it more fun than being quick
Got mine this week! Can't wait to break it in and rip it around!
This car is actually great. They did a fantastic job with it
Another cool thing about this car is how that massive torque increase is put down at very low rpm, at 3700, which is awesome and way better than 6600 rpm like the older model, so there's not that empty grey zone in accelerations. Very awesome car and I really want one!
Everyone just wants more power but then complain about it being expensive. You can’t have both
You can't have both and have something that's also easy to work on, reliable, and somewhat fuel efficient with regard to the weight/ power ratio. Hyundai/ Kia try, but they're never going to have the same rep as Toyota, Honda, or even Subaru and Mazda.
They could offer a turbo trim
The Veloster n with the sport pack was the same price with ~40 more hp before the recent refresh
The Camaro 2.0 is cheaper and a whole second faster.

OMG a perfectly round steering wheel! Beautiful.
I’m just here for ‘THIS’
Getting the base model seems like a bad deal when the premium is only 2k more with those differences
I think the base model makes sense for tuners who are going to change the wheels and seats right off the bat. Otherwise the Premium is a no brainer.
Base is for modders who will replace everything
Some people just prefer a more basic car. I would go for the base model because I don't want the spoiler or the Alcantara or the dual zone climate control.
Some of us actually prefer the cloth seats, smaller wheels, and smaller spoiler of the lower trim level.
@@signal_yellowI usually prefer cloth seats as well, but I want to see how the Premium seats feel with the Alcantara.
It would be sick if they gave it the 2.4 turbo and detuned it to 250hp and made a cool trim “turbo” package with 80’s style decals and stuff
I guess people who buy it can mod it and add their own turbo
Give them some time
Just looking back at this again weeks later. It looks pretty nice in white. The Savage Geese guys bought one, and had some protective wraps put on in strategic places. Someone mentioned that with the flow through vents coming in front, through the front wheel wells and out those vents behind the front wheels, the sides of the car are going to get a lot of dirt and if tracked, road gunk. Anyone have any experience with these kind of vents? With the wheels coming so close to the edge of the wheel wells, the sides of my '17 get plenty of road spray too.
Good review as always, but I feel more people should know where this additional torque has gone; look up comparisons of the torque curves of the old 2.0l and 2.4l. Notice the massive torque drop at 3000-5000rpm, with not much of a payoff above 5000rpm in the old 2.0l. As you can probably gather, if the torque curve shot up after this dip, it would make for a very engaging driving experience, similar to one of a 80s/90s/00s turbocharged car with pitiful torque below 3500rpm, but unfortunately it doesn't. The 2.4 adds torque everywhere, and essentially eliminates the massive dip, making the car much quicker in the mid range, as well as faster up top, and therefore more versatile on the road and track. You can exit a corner in third, where you used to have to downshift to second, then to third, and waste time in the process.
I cannot stress enough how different it would be to drive cars with those 2 different torque curves. Anybody who owns an GT86/BRZ (as I do, ´17 GT86) will know just how different the driving experience in the new GR86 will be. Not bashing the GT86, is is the funnest car i have ever owned, and one of the funnest ive ever driven, but even the greatest cars have their shortcomings!
I also imagined that they were trying to emulate the acceleration sensation that you would get with VTEC with that torque curve in the 2 liter. I also thought maybe it helps with putting the power down to the ground of you're exciting a corner at 3-4k rpms
@@ellisjackson3355 i see what you mean, although i think the main reason was emissions; the mid range is where most daily driving (City MPG) occurs, so they reduced the fuel consumption there. Like i said the payoff is alright above 5k RPM but by no means comparable to a true VTEC N/A motor.
@@goodfella69 well the FA20 makes 200 hp. Seems to me that a typical built NA VTEC b series usually makes about 200. The only thing is there is less power loss through fwd. So a built NA VTEC B might feel stronger in a 2 door DC Integra than a stock FA20 in an FR-S because of that. Although the weight transfer in the FR-S would help in a launch
I'm pretty much dead set on getting a GR 86 and adding a turbo kit to it. GReddy's prototype kit is already making about 320-350whp. I'm sick of driving an appliance car when I need to run errands. A nice fun daily with some power is the ticket.
If I really want to go fast, I'll take my ZL1 Camaro to the drag strip
@@ellisjackson3355 Thats definitely not the reason lol. The torque dip is solved in 2 ways 1) Better ECU Tuning 2) an equal length exhaust manifold.
Those two things alone have allowed people of the previous gen car to completely get rid of the torque dip and some that haven't done anything else than that, are matching the hp numbers of the new car.

While you can enjoy the present the feeling of "how many times am I going to be able to do this" is ever present in the back of your mind. Hey Doug, the alcantara gauge cluster hood is to prevent glare. A race and exotic car common feature. So, nice they offer it.
The alcantara on top of the gauge cluster could be to prevent/reduce reflection (atleast a shiny reflection). A plastic cluster top could create a reflection on the windscreen. Considering the depth of the cluster cover and the exposure due to the angular windscreen, the reflection of the cluster top can be quite big and hinder driver visibility.

Bigger 17' alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires. The car also got some decorative stuff like GR badges, a steering wheel from GT86 and alcantara seats and some trim elements. It has only 100 hp but it's so grippy. =)
@@yungboicontigo9278 Yup, great fuel economy and super smooth acceleration. xD
@@yungboicontigo9278 there's Vios "GR" with 7 speed CVT 🤦
Got my 2020 BRZ manual in Pearl White w/ the Performance Package (kinda close to the Ceramic White of the TS) and with the crackle red aluminum intake manifold and red Brembos it really looks trick out of the factory. I find it has the perfect amount of power to help you not get hurt or arrested considering this thing handles like its on rails around corners and is a pretty much a street legal go kart that makes anyone feel like Mario Andretti. Won't win any drag races, but that doesn't require any skill at all, just a large bank account. Love my BRZ. The poor man's Porsche Cayman. Now maybe someday a special edition Toyota GR86 in white with red Brembos? Hmmmmm
Thanks Doug. I’m currently an owner of an A91 Supra and will be trading it in for a GR86 in Trueno Blue.
The Supra is wonderful and is in fact a bullet of speed but there is a lack of character being an automatic. Now I support both automatic and manuals but something about a nimble rear wheel drive manual car seems more fun.
Seeing this review elevates my excitement to pick up my new GR86 which arrives in 3 weeks.
Weird decision
Hope you enjoy it!
The new model supra will be coming in manual. Should of waited. You could of probably got a direct trade.
just be honest bro, your dad said he wont be covering the payments anymore
@@Alpha_apex dont matter new z will smoke it
12:59 Flooring it and the VW passes by no problem!😂
Lol came here to the comments to see if anyone else had noticed
Can you not hear the throttle lol
I thought the VW was making that sound at first.
He let off the throttle halfway through.
He slows down at that point; he floors it for like a couple seconds and lets off. There's no way in hell a Passat is quicker than the 86, unless it's modified.
People will wait either love or hate this car, but I love my 2016 Scion FR-S. I owned it for 5 years, I have over 120 K miles, and runs like new. I am definitely going to be adding the GR86 to my collection.
This looks so nice! Literally all I want in this is for it to be turbo charged with 230hp. Hell they can even axe the Supra 2.0 and I would be ok.
I love that duckbill. Suits the car well.
3:29 Thanks for pointing to the wheels, Doug. I might not have been able to find them otherwise.
Alcantara on the gauge cluster because it completely cuts glare.
The dash is designed in general to be as unobtrusive and not distracting as possible. That hood gauge disappears while you’re driving, and that’s the point.
Please do more weird quirky old cars! The quirkier, the better!
Nice ride!
Wow its look fun to drive will drive it someday.
Really been looking forward to this review! Will likely be my first brand new car.
You could get way better for 30k man
But do what suits you

Never heard or seen this Toyota before but I already love it
This was the car I was waiting for a new model before considering buying. Worried about the markups though
this man is soo ... just nice bro dude
This GR lineup is just what Toyota needed.

The only GR that matters tho is the Supra. The rest of them are just economy cars trying to be sporty lmao
This car is one of them. It got gapped by that VW going on the freeway. All Toyotas minus the supra, are NOT sports cars.
How do you guys feel regarding the actual engine platform? I feel Toyota had much more potential in that aspect, they had other I4’s that would’ve been great if not better than the boxer in this application!
I know my area well and that sir is South on the 5 freeway San diego California. Always a good cruise
This car is becoming a real competitor in the sports car stage.! Thanks Doug! Thiiissssss is a great review….
It's a good bet for Toyota, I'm glad it continued to manufacture the GR (formerly GT) 86, in partnership with Subaru.... No more boring cars at Toyota and this is proof of that.
idk give it a year and it’ll be slow again
@@justabrokeredneck no more disturbing torque curve

@@mokubakaiba1751 - not quite. Besides, Subaru initially didn't want themselves in the project until Toyota bought some of Fuji Heavy Industries' shares.

As a guy who lives in the UK with its narrow but fast roads I really want either this or the GR Yaris.
sad thing is the yaris cost the same as a mustang gt/ camaro ss 1Le 😬
Starting to look more impressive.
The handling, precise steering etc. MORE THAN overcomes the "lack" of power. It's NA, so you need to "trash" it to get the power out.
Unleashed, even FA20 is amazing. Unleashing; Software + RE85 + Exhaust from mid to rear. That alone yields around 270hp and + 1000rpm.
As a guy in his early 20's who wants to get into the enthusiast world without having to sell a kidney, this is looking like a great option. Either this or the BRZ or a Miata.
