My favorite Honda was 2016 Accord Sport 2.4L 6MT, no turbo, no nothing. 189hp and it drove amazing. It's not about how fast you get from stop light to stop light. It's about the in-between. It's more fun to drive slow car 10/10th than fast car 5/10th.
I just bought a 2008 Honda Accord v6 for $5000 flat. Condition is 9/10, lots of upgrades, with 268HP and 248 Torque. Super fun. Gonna use it as the family cruiser.
@Tyler then just add a supercharger or turbo, toyota doesn't have them on bc it'll mark up the price too much which won't make it a beginner friendly car.
not how it works 🤣 it's more fun driving a fast car 9/10 times but if you have a slow car with a manual then u can still enjoy it. But that doesn't make it more fun than being quick
I think I would rather have a naturally aspirated engine in the GR86, as much as I'd want it to have more power. Aside from the price, naturally aspirated cars simply have a more natural and communicative feel to them, which I think is better considering that this car puts more emphasis on handling and the way it drives rather than power and acceleration.
@@GrowOutInPlay A few ways of doing this would be increasing the engine's displacement, installing high-performance parts, fiddling around with the ECU, etc. If you still need some boost after the tune, a supercharger (particularly a roots or a twin screw) would do the job without really messing up how it responds.
@@omranmkv Subies typically have UEL (unequal-length) headers, which give them their distinct boxer rumble, so you can try installing those if that's the sound you're after. Otherwise, go with EL headers. They'll give you a smoother, high-pitched tone.

I agree overall. I just wish they had kept more of the rear end from the first gen. I think it was good looking and distinctive. The rear end on this new one kinda looks like a Hyundai Genesis or an S15. Both of which I don't love from behind.
To be fair, that's not saying much, the original was incredibly dull looking for a 2 seater rwd sports car. It's the first car I've seen that looks boring, even with a widebody kit and flashy wrap.
Another cool thing about this car is how that massive torque increase is put down at very low rpm, at 3700, which is awesome and way better than 6600 rpm like the older model, so there's not that empty grey zone in accelerations. Very awesome car and I really want one!
Some people just prefer a more basic car. I would go for the base model because I don't want the spoiler or the Alcantara or the dual zone climate control.
You can't have both and have something that's also easy to work on, reliable, and somewhat fuel efficient with regard to the weight/ power ratio. Hyundai/ Kia try, but they're never going to have the same rep as Toyota, Honda, or even Subaru and Mazda.
One minor error, I think. Track mode doesn’t fully disable traction control, if it’s anything like the outgoing model. It will still intervene but the tolerances for how much slidey action it’ll let you have is reduced substantially.
@@ZaySean16 I drive the 86 man... only thing it doesn't disable is the ABS, which you would only do if you want to try learning braking without that anyway

Very good review. I hope they sell alot of these cars. It's hard to find cars with a stick shift these days. I drove the older model and it was fun to drive but the extra power on the new one makes me more motivated to buy one
The alcantara on top of the gauge cluster could be to prevent/reduce reflection (atleast a shiny reflection). A plastic cluster top could create a reflection on the windscreen. Considering the depth of the cluster cover and the exposure due to the angular windscreen, the reflection of the cluster top can be quite big and hinder driver visibility.
Bought one of these when my old BMW finally reached the end of its road. The thing that most impressed me was how similar the quality of the driver feedback was (brake/accelerator/steering) to my outgoing car, and how much better it was than the newer BMW models I test drove. The thing that sealed the deal was how light and agile the GR86 felt, even when accounting for a loss of HP and torque that I was used to. It is so nimble and so fun to drive.
Pretty basic car: just a big engine, low weight, rear wheel drive, LSD, manual transmission and a central screen with android auto for playing spotify and google maps. That's all I need, so with a good price is a great car and I love it
The handling, precise steering etc. MORE THAN overcomes the "lack" of power. It's NA, so you need to "trash" it to get the power out. Unleashed, even FA20 is amazing. Unleashing; Software + RE85 + Exhaust from mid to rear. That alone yields around 270hp and + 1000rpm.
Alcantara on the gauge cluster because it completely cuts glare. The dash is designed in general to be as unobtrusive and not distracting as possible. That hood gauge disappears while you’re driving, and that’s the point.
It's a good bet for Toyota, I'm glad it continued to manufacture the GR (formerly GT) 86, in partnership with Subaru.... No more boring cars at Toyota and this is proof of that.
I already feel nostalgic for cars like this in the same way that you feel when you grow up and go back to see your parents. While you can enjoy the present the feeling of "how many times am I going to be able to do this" is ever present in the back of your mind. One day very soon cars like this wont be made any more, future generations are going to look at this car and be amazed at the ICE powerplant, lack of tech (relatively), and all around driving experience as something outdated. Enjoy these cars while they last.
Hyundai are apparently stopping all development of internal combustion engines. It's the beginning of the end, and it's sad to see. I have said this many times even for the 1st gen, but these cars are going to be collectors cars one day.
You hit the nail on the head with that comparison. Even though we'll still have these cars on the used market in the future there's the whole problem with sourcing parts, fuel, and the environmental taxes that come with owning an ice vehicle that'll price most enthusiasts out of the hobby. Already happening in a lot of western European countries
I have the same steering wheel in my 2019 Yaris Hybrid GR SPORT. xD And the same side air vents. The startup graphic as almost the same too, but in GR86 it spins and shows that the car has a boxer engine. =) The writing on the engine explains that Toyota made the D-4S fuel injection system and Subaru made the BOXER engine.
@@yungboicontigo9278 Yeah, it was the most affordable GR badged car (20 000 Euros with options). They released it alongside the 20-th Anniversary model. @@anti4107 there is no 6 cylinder car that is 30k and below nor is there a car that has this kind of handling and balance in this price range. It's also about as quick as the turbo 4's in the range too. GTI might have a slight advantage there but it's not significant.

True but I think not having a turbo is holding this car back at this point. They put turbos in everything now why not in the sports car?
Naturally aspirated, rear wheel drive, manual AND it looks great! What else could a car enthusiast ask for? :^)
Edit: + it’s affordable for a sports car
40 more HP.
I'm sooooo glad they didn't stick a turbo on the engine!
Tbh its a flat 4, no one cares that its NA. Lol
For it not to be a Subaru...
@@Zippy306 why? NA engines mostly shine if they're v8 and a little less so if they're v6 but for a flat 4, a turbo is prob good to have.
My favorite Honda was 2016 Accord Sport 2.4L 6MT, no turbo, no nothing. 189hp and it drove amazing. It's not about how fast you get from stop light to stop light. It's about the in-between. It's more fun to drive slow car 10/10th than fast car 5/10th.
it's better to drive fast car 10/10ths than a slow car 5/10ths. it's better to drive a fast car 5/10ths than a slow car 5/10ths.
I just bought a 2008 Honda Accord v6 for $5000 flat. Condition is 9/10, lots of upgrades, with 268HP and 248 Torque. Super fun. Gonna use it as the family cruiser.
@Roberto Vidal Garcia Everyone knows that so I shouldn't have to include it in every conversation. I've been a mechanic for over 20 years dude
How could get this to add 50-60 more whp without boost?
@@GrowOutInPlay A few ways of doing this would be increasing the engine's displacement, installing high-performance parts, fiddling around with the ECU, etc. If you still need some boost after the tune, a supercharger (particularly a roots or a twin screw) would do the job without really messing up how it responds.
NA will sound like a disturbing fly
@@omranmkv Subies typically have UEL (unequal-length) headers, which give them their distinct boxer rumble, so you can try installing those if that's the sound you're after. Otherwise, go with EL headers. They'll give you a smoother, high-pitched tone.
@@dackbowland1876 the formula for engine displacement includes bore, so increasing that should give you more displacement (I suggest looking for a professional tuner or engine builder if you want your engine rebored).
When it comes to the engine itself, I personally think it's best to leave it alone and not tune it in the first place. The car is good enough for me; I don't really need anything else from it. But if you really want the power, you need to make sacrifices. You might be speaking from an efficiency or reliability standpoint, but someone looking for a good project car to tune and race might not care if it means better performance.

Coming here right after watching the Lucid Air video… I have to say, it’s impressive how Doug can be equally enthusiastic about a car having heated seats in 2021 as he is about a 170k EV having a key fob with no buttons 😂
I think it looks a lot better than the original.
by the og did you mean ae86? xD
I think modded versions of the second gen won't look as good as modded versions of the first gen
I would immediately throw a Widebody kit with a big Wang on it
I agree overall.
The Alcantara above the instrument cluster might potentially minimize reflection/glare on the windscreen.

Another cool thing about this car is how that massive torque increase is put down at very low rpm, at 3700, which is awesome and way better than 6600 rpm like the older model, so there's not that empty grey zone in accelerations. Very awesome car and I really want one!

Base is for modders who will replace everything
Some people just prefer a more basic car. I would go for the base model because I don't want the spoiler or the Alcantara or the dual zone climate control.

Everyone just wants more power but then complain about it being expensive. You can’t have both
You can't have both and have something that's also easy to work on, reliable, and somewhat fuel efficient with regard to the weight/ power ratio. Hyundai/ Kia try, but they're never going to have the same rep as Toyota, Honda, or even Subaru and Mazda.

The Camaro 2.0 is cheaper and a whole second faster.

One minor error, I think. Track mode doesn’t fully disable traction control, if it’s anything like the outgoing model. It will still intervene but the tolerances for how much slidey action it’ll let you have is reduced substantially.

Kinda like flocked dash boards in rally cars etc.
3:29 Thanks for pointing to the wheels, Doug. I might not have been able to find them otherwise.
