    A hive fleet is a large armada of living, biomechanical starships created by the Tyranids for the purpose of gathering the raw materials and biomass necessary for the reproduction, evolution and expansion of their species. A hive fleet is used to attack and strip star systems of their biomass using the full range of Tyranid bioforms.
    Only three primary Tyranid hive fleets and a host of smaller splinter fleets have ever come into direct contact with the Imperium of Man, but they have all brought devastating damage and loss of life.

    I don't know if GW has changed it, but the lore I know makes Tiamet one of my favorite hive fleets. It has taken over a system of a few planets and periodically harvests life from those planets without stripping them clean. This life interestingly enough bears tyranid genetic markers. The hive fleet is using this harvested biomass to build some kind of tower. The tyranids are building something and nobody has any idea why.

    • @teecheeong
      @teecheeong 2 роки тому +120

      Maybe the tower is going to be used fuck up chaos or warp bullshit or as a super beacon for all the tyranids to come or even Uber charge the hive mind in galaxy. Either way it’s gonna be BAD regardless.

    • @HideyoshiKinoshita84
      @HideyoshiKinoshita84 2 роки тому +63

      Hmm. Tiamet is a multi headed Dragon God(dess) in fantasy.
      What if they're building a gigantic Tyranid bioform which the literal Hivemind itself can take direct control of and make manifest a direct avatar of its own will and presence? Not merely its favored servant and commander, the Swarmlord, but to create a personal physical avatar for the Hivemind.
      The Tyranids through Tiamat [Fleet], the multi headed Dragon God, are preparing to create a new "head of the Dragon" for their godlike Hivemind. Even if you kill said being and cut off its head, just like Tiamat it still has more heads and it will simply regrow the lost head.
      This creates the potential for the Hivemind itself (and by extension the Tyranids) to finally communicate directly with its enemies and give the Tyranids more character beyond nom nom. Think just like the Gravemind (Halo) or original Overmind (StarCraft 1).
      Just like the escalation in the series through the Loyalist Primarch's return, the Chaos Primarchs resurgence, the Silent King's return, etc. for each of their respective factions, the Tyranid's escalation is the direct appearance of their Hivemind into the galaxy.
      The presence of the Hivemind's avatar could also serve as an indirect beacon due to its psyker might, attracting Tyranids to the galaxy, as well as forming a massive Shadow in the Warp due to the Hivemind's direct presence in the physical plane.

    One of the other terrifying things about Kronos, at least from the standpoint of Chaos, is that at one point Kronos stopped the Great Rift from spreading. The world of Shadowbrink was about to be consumed by the Great Rift but then Kronos landed and not only did their Shadow in the Warp stop the spread of Chaos on the the planet but it actually pushed it back. You guys forgot to mention The Court of the Nephilim King! It's a splinter fleet of Behemoth that focuses on quality over quantity. Instead of flooding your enemies with termagaunts, they send in way fewer warriors and a bunch of monster units and then outsmart their opponents. It works especially well because their prey will prepare to deal with the typical swarming nids, but instead find that their weapons aren't that effective against the tougher bugs, and then they get outsmarted, which is not typical for nids.

    In relation to the Zoat things
    real real old lore before the Tyranids were what they are now said the Tyranids used Zoats as diplomats, an enslaved species or one made for the job. The concept being they could probe out how valuable a species would be before they tried to eat them up. At some point they either were seen as useless and got eaten up or the nids just stopped making them altogether, which is in lore for why GW got rid of them. They've made a tiny return in Blackstone fortress as one of them is exploring the ruins of the fortress
    also fun lore; The protein-rich biscuits that constitute the Zoat diet are known as Zoatibix

      Less diplomat more someone who bothers to communicate first to engage in some extra fuckery if it might be more energy efficient to do so. There's a rather neat old short story, I think for the Advanced Space Crusade game, about some space marine scouts who managed to get onto a dormant hive vessel, and they meet a Zoat whose not slumbering like the other creatures in the long voyages through the void, and is basically there to mess with their heads long enough for the hive rouse the actual combat beasties. Did like the bit where he notes that other marines in the Lambs have already become part of the greater whole of the Tyranids where of course he actually means the Lamenters.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 2 роки тому +11

      1st edition is a strange beast. When the writers were just throwing in any ideas they had, and the lore hadn't been iterated yet into the form we're familiar with now. This was the edition where Space Marines weren't transhuman warriors, but rather just criminals and psychopaths given psycho-indoctrination, a suite of combat drugs, and got sent on their way. They were cops in power armor, essentially.
      The Tyranids hadn't yet been written as these hive-minded bioweapons. A "Tyranid" in the Rogue Trader era were basically just smarter Gaunts that could use tools, albeit fleshy ones. The Zoats were among many alien organisms the Tyranids had enslaved, using pheromones to maintain control over them. Funnily enough, because a "Tyranid" was a narrowly defined thing, their rules stated your Tyranid force needed to be made up of mostly Zoats, in terms of number of units. As such, the army was less "managerie of bio-horrors all serving the hive mind", and more "big aliens serving their little alien masters".
      For this reason, I wouldn't think too hard about how we got from there to the current situation. The lore is dramatically different, to the point where trying to make sense of it is a fruitless effort.

    Some interesting things about Hydra:
    as mentioned in another comment, they actively cannibalize smaller splinter fleets. This has contributed to an unexpectedly rapid growth in both numbers and knowledge, as they subsume the strengths and knowledge of the fleets they eat.
    They also respond to the psychic death screams of other hive fleets, effectively turning them into a cleanup crew for any battlefield that actually managed beat back the nids. There's an anecdote where the Imperial guard defeated a splinter fleet on this one planet, and in the middle of the planetary leader's celebration, the sun gets blotted out by swarms of Hydra Tyrannid spores.
    Lastly, the way that they invade a planet is also particularly mean-spirited. They set up a network of spores in orbit around the planet they choose, but only send down one or two small groups of say, Termagaunts. As soon as even one of the Termagaunts is killed, a large portion of the spores in orbit descend on the location of the dead Nid, increasing the amount of spores with the amount of resistance they meet. That's why they're named after the Hydra, their invasion tactics are literally "cut off one head and two others grow in it's place."

    I wish you'd given some special mention to Ouroboros and Tiamat, since their lore introduces questions about the Tyranids' arrival in the Milky Way. Tiamat, as another commenter mentioned, doesn't eat its way through other species' territory but instead focuses on building some kind of gigantic bio-tower on its 'home' planet, for unknown ends. Ouroboros is odd in that there are (admittedly unreliable) legends of it showing up millennia earlier than the official date of first contact with the Tyranids at Tyran.

    I think the tyranids are the biggest galaxy ending threat as we think, from the official art work we see the tyranids are swarms, like locust, coming up into the galaxy, they don't completely surround the galaxy like other art work does.
    I think the tyranids are like the xenomorphs from alien. They find a host, which in this case in a planet, they then eat the biomass and move on, but what if they also lay eggs on other planets, so when the nids leave a galaxy practically empty, and the only surviors are few, the egg planets hatch and the new swarm consumes the remaining biomatter and move onto the next galaxy.
    Wouldn't that be grimm dark, the nids impregnate a galaxy, and who knows how many they have done this too

      They don't lay eggs or anything like that. They scour every spec of biomass off a planet, break it down into goo, load it up in their living ships and move on. From that Goo, the Norn queens order up the creation of organisms to keep fighting in the hive fleet. That's all they do. Break down everything organic for every scrap of food possible to make more of themselves and spread even further. Very much a parasite on life.
      But what you do describe on flinging out small sects is how Genestealer Cults are made. A single genestealer makes his own cult and eventually grows into a Patriarch to lead them when ready to call in a splinter fleet or an entire tendril.

      He did this repeatedly until the commander went insane from the fear and stopped bringing in new troops to defend the settlement, after which he killed him.

    Bohemoth is the fleet that avoids Ultramarine space now due to losing a Hive Queen, which holds the primary DNA strain that every single Behemoth past or future uses as the foundation for their form. Blueberries made a poison out of it that breaks down the dna chains rapidly of their hive.
    Basically, they find tyranid then toss the bombs into the middle of them. If they are Behemoth, EVERYTHING DIES. Because of how tyranid function every single life form in the fleet has the same base dna chain no matter what the unit is. After that happened Queens are seen far far less as the queen holds the base dna unfiltered and uncorrupted or mutated and getting that dna chain is like having the keys to unravel an entire fleet. It is the tyranid's fatal flaw. When they lose a Queen it can end that fleet's entire survival.
    It's old lore but I don't remember it ever being changed.
