20:12 Bricky actually skipped one of my favorite 40k quotes. Basically when Ventris and co. are captured Honsou is trying to figure out what chapter Ventris is from and says "For what it is worth, then, I think you are Ultramarines, though I dread to think what heinous crime an Ultramarine must commit to be banished to the Eye of Terror. I feel that the reason the daemonculaba is renowned in its awfulness is not because of it being the worst thing in 40k (Slaanesh, Dark Eldar, certain actions of the Inquisition/Sisters/AdMech etc) but because of 2 things.
1)The sheer descriptiveness from a competent author over the course of a whole book as opposed to the sentence maybe a paragraph these things usually get in a codex. GW now tends to avoid being explicitly descriptive of the extremely awful stuff everyone does.
    2) The fact it gives an answer to the question of how Chaos Marines replenish without the support and size of the Imperium and still be a threat to it. In an awful, awful way that is only emphasised by Honsou's lack of caring.

Keep in mind this is only one way that chaos marines were birthed, and probably isn't used anywhere else. Most of the time you corrupt people who are already space marines. They are such a threat because they don't need to physically fight you to win. When they do fight they are outnumbered in space marines, but they use demons to bolster their numbers considerably.

For me it's not the Daemonculaba itself, but rather the intention behind it, it's the fact that it's done by the Iron Warriors, I assure you if it was the Night Lords, Emperor's Children or Dark Eldar no one would bat an eye.
But the fact that it's the Iron Warriors, the most pragmatic enemies of the Imperium, is what makes it terrifying to me, The Daemoculaba wasn't made as some sick form of pleasure or twisted form of torture, it was simply a means to an end, another tool to reach a goal.

Chaos Gods' reaction to the Daemonculaba: Upon seeing the Daemonculaba, Khorne simply accepts the flow of blood and gore but doesn't really like how it was done. Tzeentch is impressed by the sheer diabolical method that Honsou had come up with even if it's too efficient and straightforward to really like it. Nurgle loves and really eats up the waves of despair and filth that comes off from the victims while feeling sad that said victims' soul can't be claimed from the Iron Warriors' grasp and Slaanesh, while liking the pain, the suffering and the depravity of it all, feels like the Iron Warriors involved are too clinical and that they should be more 'hands-on' and 'up close and personal' about it.

Also, as Bricky said earlier. Honsou knew the Black Crusade was coming. And the process to create space Marines is long and arduous.
It is said that it takes 1000 failed subjects to creat 1 space marine. And 10,000 to create 1 chaos sauce marine.
Additionally. It takes about 20 years for all the implants and about an additional 50 years of training/scout forces to become a full fledged Astartes.
So your locking at between 75 and 100 years for 1 space marine.
Honsou wanted to speed up the process to a few months to birth a fully grown marine..even if the failure rate was higher, the recruitment rate would be so astronomically in his favor, it wouldn't matter.

I think that's the point: Warhammer 40k lore is only bearable (let alone enjoyable) because of just how much is left in the dark. The implications of a given group's activity can be obvious, but actually *delving into it* is another thing entirely.
Basically, any given Evil Faction in 40k probably has some messed up deeply mysoginistic sexual violence going on, if you think about it. But that's the thing... *You* have to think about it. It's a lot more palatable if you have the option *not to.*

A moment to note regarding that Iron Warrior they find strung up as punishment, is that he was actually a lieutenant of Honsu's, and he betrayed said Warsmith in favour of the other two Warlords they were fighting. Honsu knew about this, but lead him along until the betrayal was supposed to happen then bamboozled him back. Honsu's even pretty chill about it, basically saying "Whelp, you tried, I don't blame you. You saw an opportunity and you took it, but you failed. Bye bye." And this lieutenant wasn't just being siphoned. The Dark Mechanicum were cutting pieces off of him day by day and forcing him to watch as they feed it to a massive meat grinder.
Also, on the newborn Chaos Marines part, the most disturbing part of the process is that *yes, it did work.* It created roughly the same amount of Astartes a normal creation process would produce. And in terms of whether or not the newborns were sane enough to be used, bare in mind, this is by *Chaos' standards* of sane. By which we mean, no standards at all. The only measure they used was whether or not the individual in question could fight properly. If they could, then it didn't matter if they were a gibbering madman, since most Chaos Marines are already like that. The only reason the Unfleshed were thrown away is because the Dark Mechanicum and Iron Warriors just assumed them failures, as per typical for their arrogance. A lot of what Honsu did came back to bite him hard.

So my thoughts on the Daemonculaba is that it's messed up and distasteful, but it fits in with the aesthetics of Chaos and is more disturbing in it's callous disregard for human suffering than anything else. It's just a bit surprising that it was the Iron Warriors, the guys who are so into machinery, that started this trend up and not the Emperor's Children. Because you know Fabius Bile probably made a Daemonculaba of his own over the course of a weekend and said 'It works, but I can do better.' and then went back to figuring out how to clone the Emperor or whatever he's doing at the moment.
As an aside, while Uriel blowing up his primary facility was a huge setback, Honsou bounced back, and he's actually become quite the accomplished Chaos warlord. The problem is that he got to where he is not just by being a capable general and a Warpsmith, but he also recreated his Daemonculaba project and started offering them and the knowledge on how to create them to other Chaos warlords, and it's presumed that all the major Chaos warbands, and the Black Legion, have access to the Daemonculaba or know how to create them.
Say what you will about Honsou and what he keeps in his basement, but he's one hell of a businessman.

    • @AJweathersby
      @AJweathersby 2 роки тому +53

The other fanatical chaos legions definitely indulge in greater atrocities than these on a regular basis. But that’s what makes it more despicable with the Iron Warriors. They weren’t inflicting suffering for the sake of suffering. They had a clear reason to do what they were doing, and made a clear-minded decision that the ends were worth the means.
When self-proclaimed worshippers of evil do evil, it’s exactly what you expect and nothing more. It would just come across as gratuitous if a book about slaanesh or the dark elder went into that explicit level of detail about torture and suffering. But when fairly rational and practical minded people commit unspeakable evil, it contains a whole different layer of evil, because it implies that many other people would do the exact same things if put in similar circumstances.

To be fair, the daemoncalabra is BAD. Like REALLY GODDAMN BAD!!! But the Dark Eldar and Slaanesh have both done some downright nasty shit as well. I think what makes it so bad is while they talk about, for example, a dark Eldar homunculai coven have their base as a living, mobile tower made out of the still living, fused bodies of their victims …. they don’t really detail it. The daemoncalabra is one of the few times where they go into REAL detail about this twisted stuff that makes it so disturbing.
Also the fact that Honzo wasn’t feeding them JUST gene seed to make space marines, but actual, literal BODIES. Flesh to corrupted to harvest working gene seed from, INCLUDING from the bodies of both his enemies and his own men. And all for a process that BARELY worked. But then you remember that this thing also created The Newborn (who was basically an unfleshed clone of Ventris that had a healing factor that let him survive mortal wounds) and realize if he got this thing working ….. not good at all.

Still disturbing and horrifying to be sure, but honestly there's some of the Daemon possession fluff or other parts of 40k that I find worse to think about. My one gripe is while it does fit painfully well for the amoral and uncaring industrialized evil of the Iron Warriors, for lack of a better term it seems too experimental for them, I can't imagine how many victims and geneseed they had to burn through to get the process right, what's more horrifying to me is the thought that someone like Fabius Bile came in and set this up for them and could easily do it for anyone else willing to pay for the deranged apothecary's work.

I mean, that's the point of Bile. If he likes you and what you're hoping to achieve, he'll make it for you. Fabius likes the Iron Warriors and Alpha Legion. Both legions aren't pawns of the Chaos Gods. They instead USE the Chaos Gods and fight back against their will, refusing to be obedient dogs. He likes that because he does the same thing. He also likes the Red Corsairs, they're basically his #1 customers and even provide him fresh stock occasionally. Though now most of the collecting is done by his successful experiments rather than employing corsairs, etc. He has like 20 or so superior variants of the standard astartes that were basically primaris before they existed, if I recall.

Also, there are so many inefficiencies to the process, that exist only to be extra cruel. Like, you can just grow skin in a lab. You don't need to force-feed people to bloat them up and harvest the skin. 40K also has Vita-wombs, artificial wombs that can just birth people. Krieg uses them all the time to maintain the numbers needed for their Imperial tithe. The Dark Mechanicum could easily figure out a way to modify a Vita-womb to do what needed to be done, without bothering with the logistical nightmare that was using actual women (kidnapping them, keeping them restrained, performing the surgeries, keeping them alive, etc.).
Like, even if you had no moral qualms about any of it, it's all just pointlessly cruel in a way that makes the process _harder._ (Though, obviously, it's Chaos, so the cruelty IS the point; but you wouldn't think the Iron Warriors would be about that, since they're looking for results).

Uriel’s transgression was “modifying” a gunship by basically tearing out a bunch of heavy shit so the ship could fly better or faster, which was an offense to the machine spirit. this was seen as a huge offense and that’s what got him sent out on the death oath if i remember correctly. a little fun fact is the Raven Guard renegade they mentioned ended up joining Honsou. also, they saw Perturabo’s fortress while they were on the planet which was kinda cool.

This thumbnail just perfectly encapsulates my feelings towards this episode, but I am going to remain here and watch this through to the end as it's no longer about what's being talked about, but how Bricky will covey the Information to DK, and what images Shy will post.
After watching the episode edit: I was not disturbed in the slightest by this as I already watch Leutin09's video on this so this wasn't new information for me. But seeing DK's reaction to this, Bricky explaining this, and Shy trying to find safe images for this was what kept me watching this episode. So what a way to start the new year, the Daemonculaba, well atleast it's over and we can move on. This wasn't my favorite episode but it was entertaining nonetheless, I just hop that next week is a more light hearted one, although with what this week was about it would be hard to find something even more gross and disturbing than this Edge for the of Edge part of the 40k universe, but we'll just have to wait and see. but until then take care everyone and I hope to next week.

Despite the fact he's a ruthless and merciless warlord, responsible for the deaths of billions of innocent people, Honsou is a decent and just leader to his men. You would never see him sending his men to certain death without a very good reason, and most times he actually jumps in and joins them, getting his gauntlets dirty digging trenches alongside everybody else. You would never see him killing his subordinates for anything lesser than outright treachery. He made the Daemonculaba for the entirely reasonable purpose of pumping out more Space Marines, rather than for the sake of torturing innocent people like some Haemonculus would. Honsou shows respect to both his allies and his foes which is something rarely seen amongst corpse-worshipers or even Tau. Of course, being a Chaos Lord he still needs to meet his work quotas but he never descends into cartoonish villainy for the sake of villainy. It is stated in-universe, that if not for the fact that he was born (made?) in an already Chaos-corrupted legion, Honsou would have been great material for a noble imperial hero.
It should furthermore be noted that he maintains this demeanor in a society (in the loosest sense of the word) that is almost to a man made up of sociopaths devoid of all but the most basic forms of empathy (and the vast majority of the succsesfull lose even that over time).
His general decency contrasts very heavily with his villainous moments, which is probably the reason why those moments look much more monstrous and terrible than pretty much the same things performed by Fabius Bile or Abaddon. In fact, his humanity and civility is what makes his evil so much more disturbing.

What many consider to be the best introduction to reading 40K novels is an anthology called "Crusade + Other Stories". The very first short story within it involves a Guardsman Sergeant telling an Ultramarine, after the boyscout tried to encourage them to give the coming battle their best, to essentially "shut up and watch us".
He then proceeded to be the last remaining member of his platoon in the fight, where he was toyed with by the commander of the contingent of Death Guard they were all fighting against. Surrounded by CSM scum and being toyed with just before being ripped in half, he pulls a pin on an entire satchel of krak grenades, catching the commander and his personal retinue to be caught point-blank in an explosion.
This killed most of the group, as well as inflicting severe injuries upon the commander. Injuries which had not fully healed by the time this commander faced the Ultramarine that was the focus of the story, allowing the Ultramarine to finally slay him (though even then at the cost of being so injured himself that they could only save him by putting him in a Terminator).
It really drives home the point to even newcomers of the series that IG are the ones that Get Shit Done, even if it costs them everything.

Honsou is _the_ most evil CSM character imo and I honestly hope he gets added as an Iron Warriors character in the new Codex. Bits Bricky missed:
Honsou got his metal arm from the other -Smurf- Ultramarine who was with Ventris. He had been sentenced to the death oath for willingly using a necrodermis arm.
The enemy of the Bloodthirster imprisoned in Honsou's fortress was a _fucking daemon train!_
The colonel and the sergeant from Hydra Cordatus fought their way out of a Warpsmiths Daemon Engine forge by starting a slave rebellion _before_ meeting Ventris.
The Raven Guard dude seems to be extra Raven Guard-y because he can force people to not perceive him when in the shadows.
Ventris is probably the only Astartes in history to have a son in canon. Well more like clone I guess? When he was punching his way out of the Cilbasa the boy that had been sealed in there with him somehow absorbed his DNA and became one of the few successes. Honsou called it the Newborn but _fucking despises_ it because it reminds him of Ventris every time he sees it. The Newborn is creepy motherfucker too.

Like i am not an expert on 40k whatsoever, but i think there are probably other examples of psychological horror and transformations that are less gross and explicit but more disturbing on a fundamental level because they are less understandable. Like fuck i watched the movie "slither" when i was like 15 and it had a woman get bloated by evil worms such that she filled an entire barn while alive birthing them. So i guess what i am saying is this lacks imagination and creativity. Stuff like getting trapped inside your own mind, Vulcans torture, or the Nurgle stuff is more "disturbing".
Hannibal Lector comes to mind, he is not disturbing because he is a cannibal. he is disturbing because of his thought process, methods, personality, and ideology.

The Daemonculaba isn't fucked up JUST because of the details, it's because at the end of the day, it was just a means to an end.

Well, DK not being all that impressed about the distended skin on the moaning slaves is actually very telling about the weird sensitivity of 40k fans like Bricky, saying how the daemonculaba is in bad taste and edgy for the sake of edgy and all that stuff is kind of "unfair" when it is heavily implied (and proven) that the dark eldars, slaanesh, nurgle, and even the imperium do things like that all the time, this is just one of the few times when it has been very detailed and central to a story.

That someone came up with this, and 2. This feeling will eventually come again.

Its not that unusual to find out someone like McNeill writes for Riot Games. Dan Abbnett for a while wrote the Rebirth line of Aquaman at DC Comics. He also wrote a few other books for them too like Silencer and the Mera spin off books. He also wrote a bunch of books for Dark Horse in the Alien and Predator comics

Givennthe body horror elsewhere in the grim dark, like the dark eldar and the nightlords treatment of prisoners, I really don't feel this is any worse. Really feels par for the course as far as I can tell.

They don’t tend to describe stuff quite as vividly as they describe this. Also, this sort of hits on a lot of things that I don’t expect most guys to pick up on, so as a female fan, the fact that it’s this story that gets the horrifically detailed descriptions does make it much, much worse. Generic torture, whatever. Reduced to a less than human creature used only for breeding and torment? Sounds a bit too familiar to me.

I don't think we'd see a Honsou model before the Iron Warriors get a modern general Warsmith model, I think the old model on GW's webstore might even still be METAL.
There's a very nice Honsou proxy that can be 3D printed, on Thingi. There's also the renegade Raven Guard on there as well.

It _IS_ probably the grossest part of 40k, but body horror has never really hit me as hard as extestential and psychological horror does. The whole "every soul may be eternally damned when they die because the warp is so fucked" is far more horrifying to me because there is no escape from that fate and it's EVERYONE.
