- When your Pitman Arm is JUNK and you need to REPLACE IT, this is the only way to do it and keeps your sanity at the same time :) You will spend hours on removing a rusted and stuck on steering/pitman arm, DO THIS and have it off in 5 minutes. This method will keep you from destroying you steering box with heat or pounding on it.

I've broke many puller before I discovered this, it is the only way to do it.
This video just saved me hours of fighting with my puller here in Canada on a rusty escalade with a crossmember right in the way of the steering box, thanks for the info!

Excellent idea.
I was putting this off because everyone said it was so hard.
True you have to remove the 3 21mm. steering box bolts to get the arm off.
It's not hard to deal with, I've done steering box's before and some were a pain in the ass but this one ain't bad. No need to completely remove, it'll move around enough to work with after you get the bolts out.
I took the nut off the spindle ( 1 5/16) then put 1 bolt back in for stability and cut a little past half way and hit it in the cut with the air Chisel.
The damn thing FELL off no problem.

Hey Thank You for Posting this video. My soaked my rusted on pitman arm for several days, used a puller and came to the conclusion that something was going to break. Watched your video, cut the arm, cracked it with the air hammer and used the puller to get it off. Thank You for saving me broken tools and a big headache.

AMEN! lol. Like everyone else, I spent too long with PB, a torch, apuller, an impact, and an air hammer. I cut the slit, chisel in the side (watch those threads), and put the puller back on. BAM it pops off in SECONDS. God bless you, brother! 😅

Broke a puller, and almost broke a breaker bar trying to get it free, tried to put the picklefork in there and beat on it with a rubber mallet before upgrading to a sledgehammer, none of it worked. Eventually took your advice and went to it with a grinder and cut my way through, about 95% through and I used the picklefork as a chisel and struck it a couple times with the sledgehammer and it came out. My '06 Avalanche is running like new with the new pitman arm on.
This video is right on i needed to replace pitman arm on my chevrolet silverado with the 5.3 i tryed everything i olmost gave up i came across this video it save me 400 dollars thanks man veryy helpful.

Thank you so much! took no time at all! Took my sway bar off (5 mins) and used angle grinder. cut straight into the very back of the arm. tapped my chisel in there and I was able to wiggle it off by hand. Thanks again!

Here's a time-saver lay old part and new part side by side make sure notches in splines are correct and right position. Ran across timing chain gear marking wrong position before.
Hell yes, glad to see I’m not nuts for utilizing similar techniques (cutting a relief notch into bastard fastener and cracking apart!). I hadn’t thought about this method with really big stuff like pitman’s though! I’m about to embark on a ‘99 Tahoe with a real sloppy pitman so thank you for this!

Awesome video brother!!! I spent the last day trying to use a puller, spraying PB Blaster and even tried beating on it with a steel rod from up above. Used the die grinder and air chisel method you describe in this vid then put the puller back on....one burp with the impact gun and if fell right off.

Didn't have power chisel but cutting through it with an angle grinder gave it enough flex for the pitman puller to take it off in 2 seconds with almost no effort. Cut a little into the threads cuz I wasnt careful enough but nut threaded on fine. Thanks for the vid!

I was gonna completely rebuild my gear box, but couldnt get the pitman arm off (my new puller even stripped threads trying to get it off). I was going to just cut it off, as shown in this video, but I cant find a new pitman arm for my vehicle anywhere. So I just pulled it apart enough to replace the seals that were leaking and calling it good for now. What a pain.

Excellent tip. The other is for a thrust bearing removal. Little bit of grease, a shaft of very similar size and give it a tap. It'll almost hit you in the face it comes out so fast.

2ndA yes grab a BFH and a high-quality chisel and get to wackin...you will get it quick :) thanks for the great question

Thanks a bunch. I was about to heat it up, but decided to see what was on the web. Thanks to the video, I instead use a Dremel with a cutoff wheel, then used my air chisel to complete the break. (A cold chisel and hammer might have worked, too.) The arm then came free without issue. Kudos to the video makers.

Thanks! I was getting ready to do this myself last Sunday on my Tahoe. Got tired of soaking it in liquid wrench and beating it to death. I soaked it one more time in liquid wrench beat on it with my air hammer and it finally came lose! At least I know I have other options now. Relief cuts and a steady hand! :-)

Jam a crowbar or good prybar in between having it in upper side of pitman arm and lower side if frame, the start the vehicle and turn the wheel, works every time

Can confirm on this method! But if yours is really stuck you might have to cut in another line to allow it to fold open off the spines shaft

yes you are correct Carl, most of the time using a little patience and ingenuity will work everytime.

My truck is a 2000, I took a little bit of PB blaster and a 6 foot bar and cranked on it for one minute and it popped right out

I am trying to replace my pitman arm but can't fit the puller between the gear box and the pitman arm. Going to try cutting it later today. Hoping I'll them be able to pull it off with my hand since I can't fit the puller between the components.
I pretty much guarantee you if you cut that arm 75% of the way through and use a chisel and hammer placed in the cut it will crack the remaining material and drop right off. Thank you for watching and sharing my friend. Good luck on the project. Have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Yup I have had to cut sevlal pitman arms off if the cutoff toon wont fit I have used a sawsall and cut at an angle. Pounding on a pitman arm will damage the steering box.

You can check with your dealership and see if it can be replaced, some can, some cannot, I wish I had a better answer for you. How much was done before this to get to this step? Total novice here but It looks like the pitman arm joint was removed then the tire was removed to get the pickle for in right? Was there anything else? In other videos I've seen them remove the steering box completely, is that not necessary with this method and you can leave it in?
xMrSilver jack up the car no need to remove the wheel, just cut the pitman arm and it will come right off with a air chisel...bam done

What about the other side? My linkage bolt snapped about a 16th of an inch deeper than flush. How can I get the bolt out?

Pitman arm on my S-10 is considered a non-wearable part, almost no one sells it and those that do are $140+.
I definitely need to avoid cutting it off. But I'm having a hell of a time separating the center link from it.
there are many ways to remove but when it comes to ruining other parts to get it off you really have to weigh the cost on whether you should cut it off.
Sweet Project Cars I've bent 3 pitman pullers so far. Tried on the center link end as well as the steering box end. No dice.
What would you use? I don't care about the center link since it's the part I'm replacing. I do care about the pitman arm because it's stupid expensive for all it is.
Sweet Project Cars I had a sudden spurt of brain power.
All it took was a smaller pickle fork.
Why the heck I didn't think of that before, I have no idea lol.
But it popped right out and I got all four tie rods, idler arm, and adjustment sleeves installed since my previous comment.
dchawk81 I would just use a pickle fork that will be small enough to work and put the flat side against the gear box if the rubber boots rips than try and find one that will fit in it. Other than that your best bet will be to pull the gear box off then use a pitman arm puller. It seems like a lot of work to some people but you'll actually end up saving time in the long run because more than likely pulling it off will be the easiest way to get a new one back on.

What's the point in getting/using the puller???
I should have ground mine versus heating and beating. I did grind on the case of the gear and did heat and beat beforehand. Thus my core is messed up. Be careful with the grinder. Oh and shop owners need to quote a new arm whenever a job requires removing it from an old car. It doesn't always come off nicely
Yup, can't heat these or beat it... Seal and other Components will get damaged !!! Best is to CUT IT, plus they are not reusable parts anyway.
when the gear box leaks can we just buy the seal it self or we hasto buy the whole gear box.when you removed the pitt arm i seen a seal in it .mine it leaks & i don't know what 2 do.any suggestions? thanks
you can buy the seal on some depends on the car or truck...check with your local auto parts store good luck

Interesting take. Makes some sense. These tie rods. Pitman arms and idler arms only coat 20 25 bucks. Seems like it's more expensive in time and effort to remove, just cut the damn thibg

Or you could just get a pickle fork for the air hammer and be done.
Old Griz, some you cannot remove with a pickle fork we've gone through 4 of them in the past and still couldn't get them out so we opted for this process that works every time. Thanks and have a great day mad Mike SPC

I thought u might heat it or put a big hammer on one side then smack it from the opposite side with a smaller hammer. I just us a really good puller and maybe hammer on while it's under pressure. Maybe if it's really stuck. Put it under full puller pressure heat it and then quickly do the two hammer method. u can even ice down the shaft if feel really crazy and use all other techniques afterward.
cutting the broken arm is the last move when everything else has been done...
