Great question my friend,if I’m cutting a big steel pipe ie 4 inch it’s easier to slice through it especially if it’s in a fiddly spot,with the grinder you have to keep moving it around the pipe to cut it all and if it’s tight it can’t be done with a 125mm disc grinder,back in the day we used to do the job with 9 inch 240v grinders which was scary as a young man especially if the disc nipped!!!,the other thing is if you don’t want sparks going everywhere the recip saw is ideal,there can be a few sparks with a recip saw but really hardly any,that said even with a brand new blade the recip cuts allot slower than a grinder and tends to vibrate whatever your cutting more,so I guess I use a mixture of both tools really,we have to cut cast iron soil pipes sometimes and they are a nightmare to cut with a recip saw even with the special blades you can get to do it so I usually try and cut most of it with a grinder and try and snap off the rest,of course the recip saw is also great for trimming roof beams which are in a bad spot
