These cutters are meant to be used with a slow speed HD 1/2" drill. Set the head-on a upsidedown milk crate with a couple headbolts dropped into the holes to keep it from turning. Oil the pilot so it doesn't gall not the cast. Just follow the pilot without leaning.
And they do make a tool for pulling rocker studs. Use neversieze on tool threads. Cut the thickness of the nut and guide plate. Mark the boss with a scribe. Cut to the mark. Use valve spring cups.
Before doing all this make sure the heads aren't cracked!

You know you took way to much material off, the spring uses that to center on. .200" is more than enough.
Also don't forget to enlarge the push rod holes in the head! ½" drill bit works perfect.

Slow speed rotation and feed pressure with lots of coolant and the tool should last for years. Trick is keeping the carbide cool, not side loading it or forcing it, let it cut, take your time.

Vortec heads are not designed to use guide plates. They use self aligning rocker arms. And the pushrod holes need to be opened up to 1/2 inch to keep the pushrods from rubbing when a high lift cam is used.

I find the easiest way to pull rocker studs is to install a cam that's just below spec of where it should be a problem. Take the car for a 10 minute drive, and suddenly most of them have pulled. 😁

I didn't see you lubricate the threads. It would have made for more success even with a lower grade nut. If a nut starts to gall and mess up threads, use a zizz wheel and cut it off and possibly save the decent threads on the stud.

    • @oldmanintheshopbuiltnotbou8726

The simple thing to do is buy rocker studs then you measure how thick the nut section of the stud is and that's how much you take off the stud bosses

Have you not got a stable work bench and some heavy duty G clamps to hold the head down while you pull those head studs out. I know when we’re young and foolish we tended to do things the hard way, but when we get older and are still doing things the hard way we’re being fools, I’m not doubting for one second your expertise because I have done many SBC heads the same way but not on a rickety old table that you have to chase all over the workshop
