I had 4 Jaguars in my life ( XJS, XK8, X-TYPE and XK ) and never had any major problems with any of them , just fantastic cars purring at 40 mph and roaring at 150 mph ! Loved every one of them and adore my current XK 5L Portfolio. I also kept my 2004 X-Type estate, originally bought when we bought a dog that could not fit in our XK8, our dog has now passed away but kept the car as the space inside is insane, so convenient. The X-Type is just a very convenient armchair on wheels and the XK is a fun and exciting wild animal :)
I loved my XKR (coupe). Way more practical than the convertible. No issues with reliability but it did chew through tyres (I can't imagine why). Had to sell it, as being white haired, I was startig to look a bit sad instead of cool. Hey ho, that's life. Thanks for a great episode, Matt.

I am 39. Have had all sorts of semi super cars. currently drive an xk 4.2 'base' model. I just love the design and the exhaust. Super reliable, love it. The ride is unreal comfortable in coupe.
This is my go to car. I bought a 2013 BRG with only 16,000miles. I prefer it over my previous CL500, X6 and Panamera S. It is my daily driver. No hydraulics to fail or turbos to worry about. Simply a gorgeous car which will be a future classic..
I’ve had my 2012 facelift for nearly 10 years and used as my daily family car with 2 kids and a dog for the first 7 years. It has been very reliable and sounds amazing. As someone already pointed out, they never got the 8 speed box

I bought my 07 XK last year and haven’t regretted it for a second. I purchased a black xk convertible (portfolio spec), so not turbo, back in 2012. It never ceases to make me smile and all your comments are spot on, but hey when did anyone buy a car for it infortaiment system? I only drive it 6 months of the year but once it goes away I look forward to it's return. The convertibles are not a common sight and still turn heads wherever you go. It is utterly reliable and the major purchase you should budget for is tyres because with all that power its very easy to get through tread. I will never sell it and will pass it on to my children - a true classic.
I've loved the XK forever. Timeless design. I still remember the openeing scenes of the XKs review on Top Gear, with Jezza sat behind a silver example with the stunning Yorkshire Dales backdrop. Simply stunning!!
I had a 2001 XK8 for about 8 years, absolutely loved it. I did all my own maintenace and some repairs (CATS rear suspension and new springs) etc. However it was the rust that beat me, and after a bit of soul searching and watching this video, and a few others, I sold it and bought my 2010 5.0L XKR in kayanite blue with the sport pack. Ive had it 6 weeks. Ive lost count of the number of people that actually come up to me and tell me how beautifull the car is. Even my wife thinks its stunning. A BIG Thanks to all those that have posted videos on these cars, as it helped me make that Decision, more than any salesman.
I am very proud of my 2006 XKR. No mechanical issues after using almost daily and honestly not too bad on fuel. I had to replace the front subframe which was £1,000 from Jaguar and another £500 to fit it. Should last for many years now, and I will certainly keep it for ever. I can recommend them to anyone, They put a smile on your face and big jaguar pawprints on your soul.
There you go! That exhaust note was all the music you’re ever going to need. Beautiful car in (in my opinion) the best colour. Fantastic! Another great VT Matt 👍🏻
Great video! I've had my 07 XK for 2 years now and I only realised the other day that I've actually stopped looking at cars. I went through lots of different cars (Porsche 944, Mustang, old BMW 6 series (I prefer older cars than new) etc) but I could never settle. But I now realise that I have settled with my XK coupe. It's sexy. It makes me feel good. It sounds awesome and, as you said, the design is just sublime. Utterly perfect. Pretty. Purposeful. Not shouty or gregarious. It's classy. I'd be interested to see what you think of the F-Type. Keep up the good work.
Every Jag I have ever owned (XJS, XKR) has put a big smile on my face every time I drove it. Makes me wonder why I haven't got a Jag in the garage now.
I think these cars are a bargain for what your get. I’ve just bought my second 4.2 XKR convertible, admittedly with a gap of 15 years. Family running costs! First one was frost blue, second lunar grey. I’ve found them so reliable.
Love the XK. The XKR was the icing on the cake. Classy beauty. Looks good with roof up too. Sounds fabulous under load too. Another great video Matt 👌👏I love all the JLR products. I just do 🤷🏻
Great video, many thanks. I've owned my 08 XK for 2 years now, and it has been all pleasure so far. It looks stunning, it has a really throaty roar from the get-go and (so far) has been utterly reliable. Slightly expensive for tyres, but on the whole, it is cheaper to run than my company car was.

Wonderful cars. I prefer the 4.2 supercharged. It's a little more primitive, but love that. Also love the J gate shifter instead of the iDrive Style dial. F type is an amazing car but more of a Porsche 911 alternative. The XK is more user friendly day-to-day. Far more comfortable. They're all terrific cars. Even the base model naturally aspirated. Fantastic. Incredible value for money. Also a budget-friendly alternative to a Bentley Continental GTC without all of the fussiness.
A good friend of mine changes his (luxury) cars the way I change cameras. It means that I get to ride in some very tasty motors. He used to own an XKR convertible, and it was a cracking motor. No rattles at all, unlike his Porsche 911 rag top. He has also owned two Merc 500SL's, the rag top and the folding tin top, an Alfa, an SLK 55 V8 and a Lexus LC 430. Of them all, my favourite was the XKR.
The older 2006-2008 late 4.2 is cheap as chips, a bit more reliable than the 5.0. After driving all 4 versions, 4.2/r and 5.0/r I went for the 4.2 base simply as the aesthetics and exhaust were just as good.
I think Jaguar missed a trick by binning the two V6 diesel prototypes they were testing, apparently there wasn't the market for a diesel G.T. Seems nobody told BMW, judging by the number of 640ds I see on the road. You are quite right about Jaguar dropping the XK and XKR too early, the F- type is a completely different animal. The reason they dropped the XK is because the F-type is produced on the old XK production line. There were rumors about a replacement based on the next XJ chassis, but that seems to have died with all this electrification nonsense.
Great car, have a 2010 coupe myself. 23mpg over 8k miles driving spiritedly. Make sure you have spare cash for maintaining though. Not unreliable, but fluids need changing and bushings will wear fast as its still a heavy car. Looking back id buy the non SC, still plenty of power, and without the issues of the E-diff and no supercharger maintainance to worry about.
Never thought I'd want an R but thinking it might be a good investment to have in the garage and just put on the road two or three months a year? Got an early (nearly put old) standard 4.2 soft top, we love it. Kept it almost standard that's what they deserve, just added an automatic roof opener (three touches of the unlock button on the key fob and it opens, three on the lock it closes) a system to put rear quarter lights up when high speed cruising and a bluetooth receiver to stream music. Lovely car, just makes us smile when we open the garage door. PS changed your barber or have they sharpened their scissors 😊
I bought a 2009 XK convertible Pearlescent white Diamond Edition with 17,000 miles. Currently have about 24, 000 on it. (Previous Jag was a 2006 XKR coupe. Couldn't trust myself with all that horsepower!!) Never ceases to make me smile when I drive it-use it as a daily drive these days. About once or twice a week someone always has to try and entice me to a drag race, lol! So fun and a beautiful car to look at for sure.
I know what you mean about the unreliability comment from those who have never owned one - as soon as I mention in a post that I have an Alfa, there is always somebody who pipes up with the "Alfas are unreliable" phrase. I've had mine for nearly 4 years, and apart from what I consider to be regular maintenance, the car has been eminently reliable.
You haven't driven my rather poorly Volvo Xc90 V8! Only joking.... "Never late in a V8" Love it! (My old girl is still quick...just not as lithe as she once was......)
I bought my 2011 xkr convertible back in july 2022. it had 66k miles on it. I had it for two weeks before it had major transmission problems, take that as you will.
My 2011 XKR Black and Speed pack is such a beautiful car to drive, refined yet a bit of a beast when you plant your right foot. Just a toy, a weekend car that makes you smile every time
Thanks for another XKR review Matt always a pleasure to see and hear these cars ! Definitely one of the prettiest Jag's produced in a long time. OK the interior is a bit dated but I think there are so may other pluses about the car it can be forgiven for that. IMO there are colours other than black that suit the XKR better. How about a review on an XFR next?
Every time I see or drive one, Clarkson pops into my head. Keys in the bowl, its a JJAAAAGG. Also I always thought that one has a tinge of Spiker in its looks
Did a bit of digging around the various reliability surveys, and the XK (X150) was the most reliable car in its class (large GT), and by a country mile too. Not sure what you mean about parts bin special Matt? Other than the window switch / mirror control unit (shared with Volvo and Aston Martin) the rest of the interior is bespoke to Jaguar and most of it unique to the XK. The infotainment systems were of their time, and I’d guess any car from 10 - 15 years ago will suffer the same? Good review 😊👍
As soon as you retrofit CarPlay to the thing the infotainment will be bang up to date. So far I’ve done my discovery 4 and my wife’s a5. Simple to do, cheep and makes a massive difference.
I love my XKR had it two years I’m 28 and my insurance is £400 your original video with the white XKR actually made me go ahead with the purchase. I am also a big Range Rover fan like yourself but I haven’t had the heart to sell it yet 🤣👌🏻
My favorite car of all time. Incredibly reliable (it has been for over 6 yrs), and far more fun and comfortable than anything else comparable on the road. Pearl gray with a black roof is the ideal color :-)
Love the XK's there's one on my street a 2004, 4.2 litre imported from Switzerland, she drives sometimes all the way from here in Tenerife to Switzerland and back, it was a blue colour she had it painted a metallic British Green, like you said Matt it looks fab with the roof down.. the owner as never had a problem with it, as normal great Video.
Yes she gets the 31 hour ferry from Tenerife to I think Malaga then drives through Spain and France to Switzerland. The car is in mint condition and very reliable, she goes once or twice a year
I seriously looked at buying an XKR a few years ago, they are gorgeous to look at, and that supercharged V8 - a glorious symphony of sound. A splendid GT from back when we could build GT’s.
Thanks Matt...This is a car on my bucket list for the ideal weekend tourer. After considering a few alternatives I've unsurprisingly found the XKR back at the top of the list and so the search is on for the sub £18K previously well cared for model...I'm sure its out there and I'll let you know when I find it. I do intend to join the Jaguar drivers/owners club for good advice, access to the right garage/specialists and parts. I'm reckoning that the "best of both worlds" in terms of value, reliability, quality, running costs etc would be a 2008/9 model ( I like the ideal of the J gate gear selector and would have to forgive the crap infotainment screen system and use google maps 📱📱) ....oh and it would have to have the tan/light interior. Thanks for this and all your videos T
A lot of car for the money. Beautiful and powerful and fairly rare on the road. Good spec leather etc. Definitely recommend these. They sound great as well.
What a coincidence. I watch all your videos and my wife bought me one of your t-shirts for Christmas. Three days ago I put a deposit down on a 2014 xk dynamic r in black. Glad to see you have endorsed my decision!
I have one , insurance is less than £220 a year , but then again I'm an old fart , today its had a Adamesh back box replacement fitted , now it does growl but the smile you get driving it is worth the money , for my daily driver I have a 53 plate focus diesel and I love that also , one thing the black is a bugger to keep clean .
Just bought an 2006 XK n/a and selling my XF 30.d. Around town its very similar, good ride, quiet, but as soon as you put your foot down, fireworks! Love its dual personality and you only live once!
The best description I've heard for that engine was when Clarkson described it as "dirty", and it is, it's a gloriously dirty noise that makes miserable busybodies glare at you with disapproval. Flaws make for character. The 911 is basically perfection personified, and has absolutely no character. The XK is the opposite, so has oodles of character and honestly, I prefer the character. And if the worst thing you can come up with to say about a car is the infotainment set-up is old and dated, then it's a bloody good car, and it's not like that can't be swapped out for a more modern system. I have sat in the back of a coupe, it's tolerable for short journey's, just gives a touch of extra practicality that a pure 2-Seater just doesn't have. In the Before-Times I regularly ended up coming across a silver 4.2 XK of the same generation that seemed to be doing a daily commute, or least several days of the week, so as far as I'm concerned, if someone can use it on the daily commute, it's got to be pretty reliable, and given those V8s are all derivatives of a common design, if the 4.2 is reliable, then the 5.0l is probably just as reliable.
I've had my 2011 XK 5.0L na convertible for about 7 months. Every single time I park it, I have to stand back just to look at it. No doubt at all that these will become classics. My car is non SC...but still plenty quick and fast. I think the R version would be trying to kill me.
I have had my 08 XK as my daily for 5 years so far. 170k miles on it, and love the bloody thing. Within the next 2 years I will be buying another, maybe a 2015 model. Love the things, especially the auto blip down change in sport mode😁🤗
My biggest issue with these Jags (and jag of similar era) is the interior quality. It just isnt quite as solid as you'd expect it to be. I was in a similar age Mercedes CLS recently, and, whilst the Jaguar interior was nicer to look at, the Merc interior solidity felt how the Jag should feel. And as stated in the video, the steering is too light. But they are fantastic looking cars.
I think you're right about it being able to last a few more years. 8 speed gearbox, new infotainment and at that point it would have seemed right up to date.
I have the xk portfolio 8yrs now & every now & again I think I'll change it , I'm still waiting to find something better , roof down sun out ..... xant beat it .
Matt, you mentioned the flex that's in the car: sorry to be a nerd but at 6:28 and for a few second, you can see the car flexing (or it may be the camera being buffeted in the slipstream) but you can definitely see the panel gap between the drivers door and the body change.... or maybe it's my eyes!
I have a 97 plate that really has been a joy for the 12 years I have owned it. Lovely roar. Great mechanical condition and only 83k on the clock. Now reached an age (me, not the car) when it probably ought to go to a new home. Always garaged and fully serviced. I will miss her for sure....anyone interested?
What a beautiful looking machine, such a shame about the inside really let's it down but the outside is stunning and the noise (can't get enough of it). Thanks Matt..
Never had a car I felt the need to clean and detail each week If I had one of these I know I'd be out there each Saturday cleaning it with one of those little brushes that they use
Brand spanking new , sat in the Jaguar Dealership with a price tag of £58,000's put me right off it especially as they were only offering me a measly £10 grand for my X-Type but now seeing this, if EV's were not getting my total emotions running high I might look at one of these. Now who can tell me the winning numbers on this weeks lottery as then I'd have a punt.

Its so boring and predictable isnt it
Love these, every time you go somewhere you are always on time as you’re never late in a V8!
You haven't driven my rather poorly Volvo Xc90 V8! Only joking.... "Never late in a V8" Love it!
(My old girl is still quick...just not as lithe as she once was......)
@@patagualianmostly7437 Lol XC90 V8 is very cool.
@@patagualianmostly7437sounds like my missus mate 😂
Maybe change the entertainment system touch screen, there must be a company out there who could fit something tasty
Awesome vid once again . Wish all traders were like you. After watching you have just made up my mind XKR it is. Thanks
Glad to help
A guy I worked with a few years back had one of these in a gun metal grey colour, in person it really was something to behold.
I bought my 2011 xkr convertible back in july 2022. it had 66k miles on it. I had it for two weeks before it had major transmission problems, take that as you will.
You had lost me with that interior.. but when you hit that bypass.. 👌 would not get tired of that noise
Gorgeous isn't it , with way more character than most cars of the same type
Love the XKR... was waiting the entire video to hear "... and it's all the car you'll ever need" :)
Nothing beats a Supercharged V8, glorious music.
Did you read my mind? Spent the last week, while on Covid stay-at-home, been scrolling the market for them. They're Boss.
God I love these. Although I rather the looks at least of the X100.
I would love one of those. 30mpg on a cruise is very respectable given that’s it’s a 5ltr supercharged engine
My 2011 XKR Black and Speed pack is such a beautiful car to drive, refined yet a bit of a beast when you plant your right foot. Just a toy, a weekend car that makes you smile every time
I really getting addicted to your reviews.... They are all🔥🔥🔥🔥
I think Matt is 🔥🔥🔥too ! I, addicted
Own two and worked with Ian. He knows how to design a pretty car.
Interesting
Did a bit of digging around the various reliability surveys, and the XK (X150) was the most reliable car in its class (large GT), and by a country mile too.
Not sure what you mean about parts bin special Matt? Other than the window switch / mirror control unit (shared with Volvo and Aston Martin) the rest of the interior is bespoke to Jaguar and most of it unique to the XK. The infotainment systems were of their time, and I’d guess any car from 10 - 15 years ago will suffer the same?
Good review 😊👍
Yep i thought this. Ive owned one and its nice place to be and its of the time.
@@charlottecooley2428 Agreed. I loved mine, never put a foot wrong in the three years I had it ☺️
As soon as you retrofit CarPlay to the thing the infotainment will be bang up to date.
Iv had a xjs, xk8, and now a xk convertible. Love every thing about it.
My favorite car of all time. Incredibly reliable (it has been for over 6 yrs), and far more fun and comfortable than anything else comparable on the road. Pearl gray with a black roof is the ideal color :-)
It's even got my initials on the plate, just drop it round when you're finished, Matt 👍👍😂😂
I personally loved the older version, because I’m a S-Type nostalgic fan.. But the sound of that engine.. My god… Really nice piece of jewelry 👍🏻
You often choose cars I lust after but with used car prices thru the roof I can only dream.love your work 👍
Thanks! 👍
Once you had a jag they just grab you and never get over it I feel proud that I have own one before I kick the bucket
Tenerife to Switzerland.....??? Via the Atlantic Ocean? On a regular basis....Really? She can afford that.... but only a 2004 model? Mmm?
Yes she gets the 31 hour ferry from Tenerife to I think Malaga then drives through Spain and France to Switzerland. The car is in mint condition and very reliable, she goes once or twice a year
I seriously looked at buying an XKR a few years ago, they are gorgeous to look at, and that supercharged V8 - a glorious symphony of sound. A splendid GT from back when we could build GT’s.
You apparently didn't look serious enough since you didn't buy it.
That looks so good, roof up or down. Aren't you tempted
Brilliant review. Better than most on tv.
Thanks!
I love my ‘12 XK-R it’s my daily driver other than normal wear and tear I’ve had no issues
What a coincidence. I watch all your videos and my wife bought me one of your t-shirts for Christmas. Three days ago I put a deposit down on a 2014 xk dynamic r in black. Glad to see you have endorsed my decision!
Very nice! The Dynamic R is quite rare too and has nice seats
Love the fact there is no silly pops and crackles from the exhaust. Just natural engine noise.
Wait till you hear the rev matching down shifts in sport mode.
I could do with that exact car to match my XF 3.0d, weekday & weekend models on the drive.
Just bought an 2006 XK n/a and selling my XF 30.d. Around town its very similar, good ride, quiet, but as soon as you put your foot down, fireworks! Love its dual personality and you only live once!
Good video review, I like the XF
If you can't stretch your budget to an Aston Martin, then this is the car to have!.
I haven't seen a better looking car. 👊
I'm watching this, as my 1991 Jaguar Sovereign XJ6 is almost ready to go back on the road after diff output bearings and rear shocks replacement.
YES you should! 💯💥💫
Two great car reviewers one in Yorkshire the other in the Cotswolds
....carry on mate!!
Who are they?
@@HighPeakAutos Dang always thought you were located in Yorkshire. My mistake mate..however think you got the intended praise eh?
I've had my 2011 XK 5.0L na convertible for about 7 months. Every single time I park it, I have to stand back just to look at it. No doubt at all that these will become classics. My car is non SC...but still plenty quick and fast. I think the R version would be trying to kill me.
Leave the R version for real men. The none R version are for big girls 👧
I have had my 08 XK as my daily for 5 years so far. 170k miles on it, and love the bloody thing.
Within the next 2 years I will be buying another, maybe a 2015 model.
Love the things, especially the auto blip down change in sport mode😁🤗
Great video. I have the 4.2 supercharged version and use it to go to work and back. Just a classy car.
Bought one recently. Also love it. 😍
Good choice!
Well I could overlook the Aldi indicators and screen for the overall package. Definitely a future classic.
The noise is amazing. Worth burning through as much fuel as you can get hold of just to hear that.
I do love a jag. My dad have an xj6 in white when I was growing up and my uncle had an xjs in racing green one day I’ll have one.
Absolutely! Of course you should. Fantastic motor
You look so good in that hehe :)
Do love a Black XKR convertible, it's such a sinister but Gorgeous shape.
I think you're right about it being able to last a few more years. 8 speed gearbox, new infotainment and at that point it would have seemed right up to date.
Stunning car, I'd have one over an Aston or Bentley all day long.
The ideal car for a Stockport County fringe player looking to impress the ladies with his moves - great car.
Stunning example that car you are driving. Well known local dealer near to me loves these cars
There's _never_ been a child within me, Your Honour.
Has aged very well, handsome and elegant.
Thanks! What do you think of the car?

I have a 97 plate that really has been a joy for the 12 years I have owned it. Lovely roar. Great mechanical condition and only 83k on the clock. Now reached an age (me, not the car) when it probably ought to go to a new home. Always garaged and fully serviced. I will miss her for sure....anyone interested?
Sure. Email me matt@highpeakautos.com
Beautiful car, I had an XK8 Convertible which I loved but this is even better.
I need one of these in my life I have done for a long time even thought about selling my 1974 series 2 XJ6 to buy one as I can’t have both 😢
What a beautiful looking machine, such a shame about the inside really let's it down but the outside is stunning and the noise (can't get enough of it).
Thanks Matt..
Never had a car I felt the need to clean and detail each week
If I had one of these I know I'd be out there each Saturday cleaning it with one of those little brushes that they use
