Uttacka actually, it’s Gimme Love, Run and Sanctuary. Gimme Love has Joji passing out in an emergency situation, Run is the nightmare he has while in stasis and that’s why at the end of the video, you hear wake up. Sanctuary is a few years after he’s been with his crew and he took out his goal and now he’s depressed

It's the story of a dreamer...
He doesn't just board the ship.
He's RUNning from the real world to something beyond that.
Running from the pain to a Sanctuary of his own design.
When you're floating alone in space, in a silent void, nobody can see you or hear you Slow Dancing in the Dark.
      You're finally _free._
Hasn't that really always been the true mythos here?
      Longing for freedom.
      Freedom from Chin-Chin.
Freedom from the ails of humanity.
      Freedom from sorrow.
      Freedom from illness.
Freedom to live a life of *your own design.*
And... Freedom from the mistakes and sins of the past.
It's how we grow, and how we move forward. It's human nature.

I agree wholeheartedly. The high tempo and repetition of the “gimme love” lyric perfectly captures the feeling of constantly seeking affirmation and is emblematic of the current culture of instant gratification.
“Gimme love” isn’t directed at just a romantic partner, but society at large. Likes, upvotes, name recognition, etc. are the food for our insatiable hunger for positive feedback.

I almost feel like the whole song goes through what his sound has developed from over time. First half is that very lofi asthetic with lowkey vocals (but better then before on in tongues), the bridge acoustic part sounds like his singing off ballads 1, and the end is what his new sound and what hes trying to achieve.

    • @greenhound
      @greenhound 4 роки тому +33

exactly! - which further drives home my point that i think the lyrics aren't about romantic love at all, it's about affection and faith from the masses as he changed and to quote the song 'fought to get out' as they 'played that song into his sides'

here's my devil's advocate take to defend the 'weaker' points of this track as meaningful... it's not about romantic love at all. it's about contradictorily seeking attention from the general public while trying to escape the same reasons you are given attention. it's about his youtube days and his transition to music and the pain associated with it.
    the lines:
"Playin' my song into my sides
    It hurts, I can't lie
Remember those times I fought to get out?
    I want to get out"
reinforce this strongly. the cheesy, basic 'gimme gimme love' repetition is an ironic representation of pandering to the masses. i think a quick look at the lyrics, and joji's context as both an artist and internet figure show that there's more layers than a romantic love song here. i think the cheesiness is an attempt at post-irony, and when you look at it from that perspective, i think it works.
also fun note - 'Run' was in 3/4 and so is the second part of this song. just thought that was interesting considering he's been leaning more and more in a pop direction yet seems hesitant to go there without doing it in avant-garde fashion
edit: wow yeah, i haven't seen a single person suggest it's about anything other than romantic love and that seems like such a mistake in interpretation

I dont know what it was about this song, but it legit blew me away. I loved the first part as well, so I can't agree with you. I think the vocals are fitting with the faster pace and the "easy" gimmie love is likeable, at least for now.
For the second part of the song it just went crazy, and I was completly taken away into his universe. All in all a great experience.
I think that the song does a lot more with the music video, it really pulls the whole piece together as art and with a vision rather than "just being some pop song that happened to end well".

Its like a cry for help or him just having enough of the emotional neglect his partner has given him and he's demanding the love he knows he deserves, especially in his lowest/darkest times when he needs them the most.

That might be a future track at some point. This song does not sound basic in the slightest, far from it, but compared to one of his best singles released, Run, it wasn't as good. It doesn't feel like a song I can put on a vibing playlist or repeat like Run was.

I think you summed up most of what I thought about the track. I also felt it was a little lacking lyrically and vocally compared to what we've seen him do, even just in the other two singles on this album, but I still liked it a lot. I wasn't as put off by the chorus as you were, I enjoy when he sings in that tone somewhere between the mumbling and high notes. (One reason I love Sanctuary so much) I've also been getting a bit of a vibe of his older work in this album, but definitely evolved. You can tell with every track he releases that he's still experimenting and growing. I miss his raps. I wonder if he'll ever explore that medium again. I remember him saying he didn't think he was very good at it in an interview, but I disagree. I'd love to see him do something like She's So Nice or Fried Noodles again, with the raps broken up by smooth melodies, now that he's evolved so much. Not saying he has to be comedic or filthy in them; it would just be interesting to see him use the format again.

Going out on a limb here but perhaps this video is an analogy to Joji's growth as an artist. His early days reflect an amateur-like energy in both video and lyrical word usage and scenes of his growth and frustrations which leads to a point to the halfway point of the video where he must cast all his past aside and ascend beyond his previous expectations. His lyrics get deeper, his skill progress further, and his tracks higher production BUT comes at a cost of his peers and friends at the time (and his old fans) respect or their lack of love for him in this new state. He's ascended beyond our expectations, but it's lonely up there.
