  • At the end of our three hour conversation with Peter Jackson about the making of Get Back (see other videos), we touched on the idea of applying the machine learning and AI technology used on Get Back to other Beatles audio, including the Star Club tapes. Here's what he had to say.
The complete produced version of our talk can be heard (in one hour increments) at somethingaboutthebeatles.com/224
The Something About The Beatles podcast can be found Apple Music, Amazon Music, Google Podcasts, I Heart Radio, and loads of other podcast platforms.
It appears as SATB Raw on UA-cam and Spotify.
Here is the article in Forbes online discussing an extended cut of Get back as well as the Star Club tapes: www.forbes.com/sites/williamj...

Jackson's movie has sucked me into the Beatles vortex for life. I was always a casual fan, but once I saw Paul creating out of nothing the melody to Get Back I was immediately fascinated by his talent. I just heard the Cavern tapes for the first time in my life and wow, the club goers in back in '62 must have been mesmerized by the Beatles. That energy and tightness of the band is even rare amongst bands today. I hope Jackson is successful in getting those mono recording separated and re-mixed as he described. That would be something else.

McCartney bought the Cavern 1962 set recording for £2,310 in 1985.
Nobody knows anything about the sound quality. The setlist (as recorded anyway) is:
    - Words of Love
    - What’s Your Name
    - Roll Over Beethoven
    - Ask Me Why
    - The Hippy Hippy Shake
    - Til There Was You
    - Hey! Baby
    - If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody
    - Please Mister Postman
    - Sharing You
    - Your Feet’s Too Big
    - Dizzy Miss Lizzy
    - I Forgot to Remember to Forget
    - Matchbox
    - I Wish I Could Shimmy Like my Sister Kate (aka: Shimmy Like Kate; aka: Shimmy Shimmy)
    - Memphis, Tennessee
    - Young Blood
    - Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)

Original tape is still with Larry Grosberg in the USA, but is unplayable. The next best thing is the Mono 1/4 inch copy made In 1976/7 (also still held by Larry) - read more in mine and Hans Olof Gottfridsson's Record Collector magazine articles. I'd post a link but that would more than likely be blocked. Apple had the chance to buy everything to do with the star club tapes a few years back but despite being put up for sale remained unsold.

      @nickthomas181 2 роки тому

Rough there and there's rough as a badgers chuff. This was supposed to be a band that was going to conquer the world and they couldn't conquer The Star Club. It's interesting that I have listened to that 77 albums and I was listening to a new version on UA-cam yesterday cleaned up my arse, it's obviously been rerecorded(not by The Beatles) certainly in the music. Even the vocals are now not all by The Beatles.
Be Bop A Lula wasn't them singing it was Horst Fasher's brother many credit it to Horst Fasher a good friend of theirs and Head Bouncer.
Roll Over Beethoven that George cocks up and they stop and restart suddenly is musically perfect and you could tell the vocals have been edited on the break and restart so it's now one.
You can restore what's there but now apparently we can restore what wasn't there in the first place.
Remember it was a single microphone a mono microphone from above the stage and now with the new mix we've got better sound than The Beatles at The BBC.
It's easy to rerecord ( by new musicians, not The Beatles mind)the simplicity of beat music after all it's very basic.
The Star Club tapes were a disaster in the first place.

Apple specifically bought every recording of the Beatles live to prevent them from getting bootlegged, is my take. While the general public would be mildly interested in these recording, its mostly the hard core collectors who want to hear & own everything (at least as a digital file) this move ends up targeting. Sadly, I doubt they will change their minds about giving this to Peter Jackson & releasing it within our lifetime.

Actually, I would like to see this new technology used on very old recordings from the likes of Bessie Smith or Louis Armstrong.

after the star club tapes and the Quarry men/cavern club rehearsals i would say do a box set A.I. job on Beatles live show 62 to 66 and Paul mccartney and wings 1972-3 best of live BEFORE th;ey became the biggest rock band in the world in the 70's. Bssically, what paul wanted to do with the Beatles as to go back onto the road as a little unknown act.... Man, one could make a fortune but more importantly, a lasting testament to the greatness that has been lost due to shitty recording techniques of the past.

No one will ever hear the cavern performance with Pete Best on drums. I'm pretty damn sure that.

Why the hell would you want to make a live recording sound like a studio session? That's idiotic.

I think he means "studio quality" as the current taps are almost unlistenable.

Here's what may be a unpopular opinion : The Star Club tapes shouldn't be too modified in the way Peter Jackson states here. He talked about making them sound as if they were recorded at the studio, at abbey road...Well, the beauty of the Star Club tapes is precisely that we have the Beatles performing live, and it sounds loud, and raw, echoey and even dirty, the instruments, the sounds from the audience, that's the soul of it. It sounds honnest. Making it sound as a studio recording would be stripping those tapes from their true nature, it would kind of feel artificial... Now, the sound of the instruments could be improved in terms of balance, a bit of ambient noise reduction here and there, those little things, that would work, and all this should be made by someone with musical knowledge, Jackson is no musician. Forcing the live performance to make it sound like a studio record is not a good idea. " Improving" the sound quality of the old live performance tape, would work better.
