I Was A Teenage Screamer- Something About The Beatles
There were 73 million Americans tuned in to the Ed Sullivan Show for the US live TV debut of The Beatles. And of that one-third of the US population, it is safe to say that a good percentage of viewers had their lives changed forever; this is not hyperbole.
Among those 73 million viewers were 13 year-old Debbie Gendler from Oakland, New Jersey and 12 year-old Carol Tyler from Fox Lake, Illinois. Debbie was moved by the Please Please Me album in the summer of 1963 to form a US fan club - she may have a lock on the title of "First American Beatle fan," as her enthusiasm and persistence won her a coveted ticket to witness the performance in person. Carol, likewise moved by the viewing and the "I Want To Hold Your Hand" single, started a fan club of her own; both she and Debbie went on to see the 1965 North American Tour, she at White Sox Park and Debbie at Shea Stadium.
You can hear Debbie's first SATB appearance in 121: New York Stories:

Taking a detour from some of the heavier SATB topics of late for end-of-summer light entertainment, Gary Wenstrup and I return to the series of gold, silver and bronze rankings of Beatle cuts through their catalog. We’re at the halfway point now as The Beatles turned the page from a touring to a studio band, but not before a final blast of nostalgia by years’ end. Discussed in this first hour: ...

The author of The Beatles and The Historians, Erin Weber, is a frequent SATB guest and always enjoyable for the level of academic rigor she brings to the table. But don't be scared: she doesn't traffic in academese. Rather, she applies the discipline of historiography to a subject - The Beatles - that is too important to be left to random authors. (Sometimes the people who knew them are the wor...

The original Star Club album cost thousands of dollars to make it sound presentable. PIckwick did some further work on their version. Including Hully Gully was probably a bad idea. If nothing else, it was by another group on the bill. Technology has come a long way since then. It would be interesting to hear what could be done now.

Here's what may be a unpopular opinion : The Star Club tapes shouldn't be too modified in the way Peter Jackson states here. He talked about making them sound as if they were recorded at the studio, at abbey road...Well, the beauty of the Star Club tapes is precisely that we have the Beatles performing live, and it sounds loud, and raw, echoey and even dirty, the instruments, the sounds from the audience, that's the soul of it. It sounds honnest. Making it sound as a studio recording would be stripping those tapes from their true nature, it would kind of feel artificial... Now, the sound of the instruments could be improved in terms of balance, a bit of ambient noise reduction here and there, those little things, that would work, and all this should be made by someone with musical knowledge, Jackson is no musician. Forcing the live performance to make it sound like a studio record is not a good idea. " Improving" the sound quality of the old live performance tape, would work better.

The Star Club recordings are required listening; it’s The Beatles with Ringo, who’s been in the band four months, performing covers in a bar with no screaming audience; I hope Peter will be given the opportunity to clean them up

It's wild that Allan Williams and Kingsize Taylor knew they had a million bucks back in the 70s and couldn't release it, and now they're gone, but if Peter Jackson had a go at these tracks and Apple released them commercially, there would be vast amounts of money made, all around. Mr. Williams and Mr. Taylor could have ended up where Pete Best eventually ended up - making a vast amount of money off their time with the Beatles, and dying rich men. Alas....!

Great conversation. Maybe I'm amazed, that one year later only 550 people have watched this. And these three ladies are doing such a good job. Wow. I agree with Allison that it is a joy to listen to Debbie and Carol. It makes me so very happy. For me, this is the first time the screaming, The Beatlemania, is explained by grown-up folks able to reflect on their past experiences and give it meaning we can understand. Somewhere around 45 minutes into the conversation. Interesting that even in hindsight The Beatles themselves were wrong, and they didn't understand the fandom. They never came for the music, but for the meeting, the experience, to be with them. So the suggestion The Beatles stopped touring because the fans could not listen to/hear the music, is b.s. they missed the point entirely. Paul understands. it is not about the music, but the experience... Thanks.

I have this theory about the Beatles. Ringo was the first to quit, but in my opinion was just a cry for attention and he came back quickly when the others showed him some love. George was next to quit but within days came back. John had lost a lot of power within the Beatles as his drug habit and Yoko's intrusion left him isolated. So HE quits the Beatles but continues working with George and Ringo, hardly a breakup. Again, I believe he wasn't planning on completely leaving just wanted to wrest some power back from Paul. I think history shows John, George and Ringo would have come back to it all, but by then PAUL had had enough after the Alan Klein debacle. I think it shocked the other three that Paul had NO intention of returning.
