      I was a 16 year old Beatle nut when this double album was released, it became my music Bible. The songs are raw and exciting, played hard and fast. My first band played about 1/2 of these songs in our punkabilly new wave act, The Fashion Plates, Columbus Ohio, in the late 70s/early 80s. This was recorded in the Star Club in a gig that Brian Epstein had booked before the lads started getting famous, they didn't want to do it, but he felt obligated to fulfill the date. I suspect that this was a recording of the last time they graced the stage in Hamburg. If you get a chance, read Alan Williams book, "The man who gave away the Beatles", it's a great read.

      @@joelross3649 You suspect? It's Christmas - New Year's '62, that's been established for years. I've done more than read his book, I've met Alan Williams. I was responding to the video clip, not the Star Club recordings themselves, I'm well aware of the history behind them, and obviously I already knew the recordings (and the album, which I also had as soon as it came out) (ditto the Hollywood Bowl LP which came out the same year). Have all the improved versions that have come out over the years, including the full version of "Red Hot", and the stuff in the correct order, with all the stage banter, and without all the echo they drenched that double album with.

    I recall court proceedings from late 80s where someone was halted by Apple Records to officially release the tracks from the Star Club gig.
    Paul asked George if he would appear as the group to represent them for their argument and behalf.
    George seemed to make the argument that a drunken agreement doesn’t hold up for anything. The Judge (and court) agreed and the band , with Apple Records, proceeded to give the tapes a much needed revamp and remix and master and released it in 1989 I think.
    So thank you George for your clear minded approach

But I have to say Alan Williams I will always be grateful to as he gave me my first work at Blackpool ideal home exhibition from that I was a musician for 35 yrs, he was just such a nice person, I didn't know about his history but I found that interesting. By the way, the Phillips reel to reel tape deck they used in the Star Club that night was quite the novelty in 1962. Someone had the presence of mind to use a high quality Seinheiser microphone with the deck and hang it over the music stage. It was about as good an amateur live recording as you were going to get at that time.

Eventually, Paul Murphy of Buk Records bought the tapes, invested a fortune in editing and repairing the tracks. Nowadays they speculate on how much 1 Bitcoin will be worth one day....there is no currency in the world, no precious metal to decipher the value of these tapes, even more so for a Beatlles fan.

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer Рік тому +9

      @@bobcaygeon4533 Let me explain what I meant by that, Bob. You see, Pete was the band's *_22nd_* drummer. None of the previous 21 drummers stuck around, either because The Beatles stunk at that time, or because they hated the prick-ish Lennon. Then in August of 1960 The Beatles had an offer to go to Hamburg, but only if they had a drummer. They had such a poor reputation, they couldn't find one. They were supposed to leave for Germany in a couple days, but with no drummer, they were going to have to pass on the opportunity. And if that had happened, they said they would've been on the verge of disbandment. George said he was preparing to be a bus driver like his old man. Paul wanted to be a window dresser at a Department store. And John said he was ready to stow away on a ship to NYC. But, they knew Pete was a drummer in his own band called, The Black Jacks, and took a chance on asking him if he'd give that up, as well as college (which he was just about to start), and join the band. Pete agreed, and off they went to Germany. The band gelled like never before, powered by Pete's "Atom Beat" on drums. Within weeks, The Beatles were transformed from the worst band in Liverpool, to the hottest ticket in Hamburg. Ringo Starr said, *"My band, Rory Storm & The Hurricanes, arrived in Hamburg just two months after The Beatles had arrived. I'll never forget the first time I saw them, they were already great. They were the only band I would go see on my time off."* So yeah, Pete Best SAVED The Beatles.
      Pete was a great drummer. And everyone on the scene knew it. But don't take my word for it. Here's what a contemporary drummer of Pete's said when he was asked in an interview what he thought of Pete's drumming: *"He was a genius. You could sit Pete Best on a drum kit and ask him to play for 19 hours and he'd put his head down and do it. He'd drum like a dream with real style and stamina all night long, and that really was The Beatles' sound, forget the guitars. I was amazed when they replaced him. I even thought about learning guitar so he could be the drummer in my band. The Beatles didn't hate Pete Best, but they didn't want to be outshone by their drummer. Ringo was a good drummer but he was more ordinary."* -- Chris Curtis, drummer for The Searchers, a great Liverpool band who scored a 1964 Top 3 Hit in the US charts with their classic, "Love Potion # 9". Chris saw Pete Best play many times in both Hamburg and Liverpool during Pete's two years as The Beatles' drummer.

    When Alan Williams talks about the "Ringo has just joined the group" it is not accurate, Ringo joined the group in August 1962 while this tape has been recorded in December 1962, otherwise, this is an historical tape and I tried to create a stereo mix of the song we can hear :"Kansas City/Hey,Hey,Hey,Hey", but the audio sound is so poor that the result can not be satisfying,even the best audio avalaible is not suitable to create a decent stereo mix.

It is a historical document nothing more. The Roman Colosseum is also a piece of shit hanging by a thread but it has historical value just the same.

      The Beatles slightly drunkenly thrashing away on a dire quality 'home taping'; Allan Williams..this is worth 8 million pounds..10, million, 20 million.....(1973 rates), he had the gab, and tried to blackmail Apple for a grab. It didn't work.
