Everyone thought I would have this played at my sons funeral 3 years ago this coming up Christmas. He used to play this and sing it on Saturday Nights when we would sit by the firepit . I just couldn’t play this one it was a very special song for us . This song holds so much more memories and meaning for me now .
I had the Great Honor of singing this song at my Brother's funeral. He loved this band and this song. He was an amazing Simple Man...miss you, Bro.❤

Different time man. These guys, zeppelin, eagles, Queen etc all made epic tunes. The instrumentation and most importantly the composing back in these days was unreal. No basic repetitive chords and such. Every chord, drum fill etc is perfectly placed

They’re both playing guitar, simultaneously. During the recording of this album, Larry quit, Ed King stepped in on bass (briefly). Leon came back on bass, then Ed went back to guitar, and Skynyrd had what’s come to be known as the three guitar attack.
Skynyrd, ZZ Top, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Allman Brothers, etc are examples of Southern Rock. They're all from the South.
I'm proud to say they were born and raised here in Jacksonville FL. A few blocks from me. I visit their graves every chance I get.

They had 3 electric guitars, sometimes 4. Like when they played Freebird live, was it Oakland? Ronnie was the boss, he had a bad temper and a hard-ass work ethic. Before they got big, they would practice every day, most of the day in this broken-down house out near the swamp. The place only had 1 small window and in the summer, it would hover around 100. But they practiced and practiced and practiced till Ronnie was satisfied. I got to see them live in ATL at Tech Coliseum in the mid 70's. It was amazing. More Favorites from them: "Tuesday's Gone" and "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" (now that one is the blues, it's great). Anyway, ENJOY
Hey man I am just a few hours new to your Channel and I'm let's see one minute and 30 seconds and I think and you're talking about how a lot of rock bands have a lot of stories and of course they do. These are the people that actually got there and make it Against All Odds and sometimes it's long and sometimes it's short but oh well that's what she said, laugh. But anyway! Yeah what you were talking about reminded me that that plane crash Not only was devastating from me because I was in junior high when it happened I was so into Lynyrd Skynyrd at the time. I mean a lot of other bands as well but they were really up there and I knew all their individual names I could as a musician identify them purely by listening to any of their recordings who was playing what? Even in the case of multiple guitars and so forth. And I like how you made the point about wow that's pretty intense.
Another devastating one apart from the Buddy Holly and Big Bopper one from the way back which you might check into. In fact Don McLean American Pie is all about that although I've heard that song so many times it's a little bit too long for me, but anyway you made me think of Stevie Ray Vaughan that dude died in a helicopter crash leaving a gig right in his prime. And he was one of those that made it huge but never lost his roots, he stayed humble, just like I was presley, just like Paul McCartney and so forth.

I saw them on concert a few times in 73 and 74 and loved them. At one concert they played Freebird until the tiles were falling off the ceiling Good Times. This is Southern Rock.

Per American Songwriter: Simple Man was written by Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington. I'm pretty sure that is Ronnie singing the lead on this song.

Ronnie was great! He wrote these songs. That's Artimas Pyle on drums and Gary Rosington, Allen Collins and Steve Gaines on guitars and maybe Ed king.
Their clean sound does harken to Led Zeppelin. I think that's what got us. There are 3 lead guitarists who take turns playing lead and rhythm depending on the song. All World Class Musicians. Ronnie was the Boss and not just the singer. I have so many stories of my hometown boys from Jacksonville, Florida. My heart swells with Pride as if they're all my Sons.😊

Written by Gary Rossington and Ronnie Van Zant. Gary Rossington on lead guitar, Allen Collins rhythm guitar, Bob Burns on drums, Ed King on bass. After this, Ronnie switched King to co-lead guitar, telling him, "you're a terrible bass player." So they had 3 guitarists until King left in '75. Leon Wilkeson, considered at the top of the bass players in popular music, took over on bass.
I have to say that I have watched all of your reactions and you are my favorite. I was born in April of 69, when music was music. I loved all genres. Soul, r&b, disco,jazz and rock. Everyone sang so beautifully the world was a much better place. I danced with my son at his wedding 10 yrs ago to this amazing classic with a very important message in it❤❤
Leon Wilkeson is on Bass...probably the most rock solid bass player in America at that time. His playing is simply beautiful and goes far beyond what's required. The opening bass riff in SIMPLE MAN is as sweet as they get....it seduces the ear INSTANTLY. Look for : Lynyrd Skynyrd,, GONE WITH THE WIND...AMPLIFIED. It's a documentary -- 2 hrs and 42 minutes. IT'S FRICKIN' AMAZING...both the bands story, and this documentary on youtube.
Done. Great reaction man. I don't know why exactly I mean there are so so many incredible Lynyrd Skynyrd songs in fact there aren't any that I actually dislike at all. There aren't any that I wouldn't listen to at the drop of a hat. But the conversation you're having about the south and kind of about his voice and his accent and everything and also about your experience going to you know family reunions or whatever in the South and just people are generally nicer and that kind of thing.
If you haven't already done it, and man if you have I'm sorry I just stumbled across this Channel and I just randomly listened to three I think reactions. So I haven't looked to see if there are playlists and all that stuff yet. I'm on my phone and it's not that easy but anyway it's just making excuses. But The Ballad of Curtis Leow. It's a common request but I think the reason is why because everybody sees free bird and Simple Man first and those are fantastic songs, they are iconic for a reason. But this little slide guitar ballads that does have an actual real dobro in it, is slower and simple and you feel this intimacy with the handful of instruments that are featured in it and especially with Ronnie's voice. So I have a feeling you would really really really really like it. I mean it's a great story but definitely, but for me more than that? There's just something about it and a lot of it is the arrangement but I think a lot of it truly is Ronnie's voice. And not just his voice his choice of diction and delivery and phrasing and all those things that you know front men have to do. And front women not to leave anybody out either. There's a lot that goes into this stuff for sure.
That day, one or both engines of the airplane were acting up, which had some of the band members apprehensive to fly. When Ronnie Van Zant heard this, he said, "If it's your time to go, it's your time, let's go." This was from a documentary about the crash.

When you mention "Larry" I assume you mean Larry Junstrom who was a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd but he left the band before the first album came out. He later joined .38 Special fronted by Ronnie's younger brother Donnie Van Zant. The bass is either Leon Wilkeson or Ed King who later switched to guitar

😁 You will find as you listen to their songs, you will be repeating yourself, saying "I think this one is my new favorite song" as you continue listening to LS. lol and although, I think I understand what you mean about the south and that the way the south "speak and words choice" is quite unique but very relatable and also down to earth. Although, you will come to discover as you listen to more of these musicians and artists, that several came from many parts of the country other than the south, however, I believe they "Identified" themselves with that style of life/living. For instance, here's another legendary rock band that is also considered southern rock "country bayou" and even some blues music. But was formed in El Cerrito, California, but you would never know it by listening to John Fogerty sing "Creedence Clearwater Revival - Proud Mary (on The Ed Sullivan Show)" you may be familiar with "Tina Turner - Proud Mary - Live at Wembley (2000)" this is a live performance)" who made this song an absolutely huge hit, and you might not be aware thar it was written by John Fogerty. I love both artists interpretation of the song. They are both wonderful performers. Tina was spectacular on stage in this concert. Nice reaction👍

Great reaction to a great song. You mentioned how instrumentation is important to you. 2 suggestions: Pink Floyd and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Watch Pink Floyd perform Comfortably Numb live at the PULSE CONCERT; and watch Free Bird LIVE at Oakland, California (1977), which took place 3 months before the plane crash. The live guitar solos of these 2 songs are among the absolute best solos ever.

I've been watching some of your reactions and am now subscribing. Another ballad by them is "Tuesday's Gone", and one to get up and move to is"Call Me The Breeze". In the same genre try Allman Brothers "Whipplng Post", and Marshall Tucker Band "Can't You See", watch the live version. Another song with wonderful lyrics and great guitar playing try Glen Campbell's "Gentle On My Mind ",live version.
Tuesday's Gone is my all time LS favourite. I keep an album in my car, they're my drive time music tho the guitar solo in Freebird really gets my foot down on the accelorator. Superb band

They are a quintessential progressive rock band from Canada, made up of only 3... Yes, you read that correctly - THREE musicians, each is a master of his craft. The drummer, Neil Peart, was known by his nickname "The Professor" because everyone learned from him. He is considered one of the best ever, up there with John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. The bassist (Geddy Lee) actually plays multiple instruments & has one of the most distinctive voices in rock music. I highly recommend any of the following:

Man you can make a list of songs from this band and close your eyes and put your finger on any song they sang and if you don’t like it you don’t like southern rock music This band didn’t start performing live until until 1973 and the plane crash happened in 1977 and they had so many songs that you can relate to I have never heard a band that every song they sang is a good song I don’t know another band that every song they sang is fire I could sit here and start naming songs from this band and I would run out of space before I got through writing all of them down Ronnie wrote most of their songs and he never wrote down any lyrics He said if you have to write down a song on paper to remember it than it’s not worth listening to
People call "Simple man" Ronnie van Zant's requiem because Ronnie wrote it and sang it once before he died😢

2'19" .. had to stop it right away again because you just called out the bass line in the very introduction of it the very intro section. As a musician it's just so sad to me how 90% of reactors will comment on an amazing guitar solo or maybe John Bonham stood out on the drums on that particular Led Zeppelin song or even a keyboard and of course great singing or great backing vocals but hardly ever do they mention the bass line. And that's actually a joke in the musician's world but it turns out the bass is one of the most important parts of the song. You called it out and I really like that.

"That Smell" is my favorite LS song. If you check it out use a lyric video! The lyrics need to be understood.
Yes, a lyric video is a must on "That Smell." So many reactors miss the real message, maybe because it is kind of funky and rocky, and they think it's a party song when it's actually the opposite.
The plane crash took out half the band. I remember that well. The band is still going with family members playing those classic Alabama songs.
38 special members were family to Ronnie and have that great 70's and 80's sound.
The Alman Brothers from Macon Georgia also have great sound and they made several killer albums. Alman brother's old Macon home is a museum to the band.

Here he is not. This was recorded with Ed King playing bass. Leon had temporarily left the band during the recording of their first studio record and came back just before it was released. Most tracks on "Pronounced" were with Ed King playing the bass lines.

No, Ed King played bass on almost the entirety of the first record, including Simple Man. Leon had temporarily left the band and didn't return until just prior to the album's release. Afterwards, Ronnie placed Ed King back on guitar and thus Skynyrd's three-guitar lineup was born.

It's quickly obvious to me after only a few reactions that you are doing this right and love the music so PLEASE do yourself a favor and get some over the ears headphones for your Pink Floyd / Led Zeppelin / Rush / Yes etc really are a different experience with them.
