My mother and I went the Clinique counter at Sak's in Beverly Hills the week it opened! I was 19 and she was 45. We were so impressed and excited and it was so much fun doing the skin type test and getting our products. My mother used Clinique until she died at 92. Her skin was gorgeous and almost wrinkle-free (yes, she was genetically blessed). We used to love it when Clinique had special mini gift sets free with purchase. We'd make a day out of going to Bullock's Wilshire, shopping Clinique, followed by a lovely lunch and fashion show at the Tea Room. Over my life (I am 73), I have had highly sensitive, reactive skin and Clinique was a life-saver for me, especially because it was fragrance-free. I strayed away from Clinique many times over the decades but usually ended up returning. Although I no longer shop their products, I have a fond place in my heart for the innovative concept behind them. Of course, my memories with my beautiful mother are most responsible for my affection for the brand. Thank you so much for this video. You made my day!
Thanks for the personal story!😍 It’s nice to know you and your mother were able to maintain beautiful skin. I really believe beauty and it’s maintenance is a worthwhile endeavor. It’s not just superficial it’s about self value. 💖💖💖 My mother didn’t struggle with her skin like I did so I had to figure it out by myself. And I did, I routinely get compliments on my beautiful but still oily skin.☺️ All hail to, Retin A!🙌🙌🙌
I'm 75 and Clinique was my go-to as it was for everyone back then. I, too, used to love it when it was gift-pack time and, believe it or not, I still use their big white comb that I got in a gift pack which must now be about 50 years old!
Long term Clinique user, never could tolerate the toner but the regimen of soap rinse moisturizer and properly removing makeup plus moisture boost I have great skin at 62. I can’t tolerate scented products so it’s perfect and they have the best tubing mascara I’ve found. Clover blush and black honey lip balm and I’m good to go.
I was a counter manager for Clinique for years. Out of all the cosmetic brands I’ve worked for in the past 20+ years Clinique gave consultants the best training and was an amazing and fun brand to work for. However, being able to try the highest of brand name products I still go to my CeraVe products with the best of results.
I was a Clinique Consultant for many years in the late 1980s/early 1990s. I agree that we had the best training and I loved working for the brand! I still love Clinique today but now I use a broad range of products from many brands. I still have the pins we used to wear on our lab coats - the silver ‘C’ and the enamel pin with the 3-step products. A spray of Aromatics Elixir takes me down a very happy memory lane ….
I was a huge clinique fan from teenagehood onward. I still like the brand and just bought some for my teenager. As my own skin has matured cerave is also my go to. I love it and so does my skin
The advertising for Clinique was also ground breaking. Before Clinique, skin care and makeup products were shown on a model. Clinique advertisements only had pictures of an individual product. This minimalist marketing was revolutionary. I used Clinique. I was a 4 because of my oily, acne-prone skin.
Actually, the first person to use the lab coats at the makeup counters was Helena Rubenstein back in the 1930s. She thought that this scientific appearance would instill more confidence in her cosmetics. She didn't have actual dermatologists creating anything though.
I’m about to turn 58 and I’ve used Clinique since high school. I try a ton of skincare but I always return to my Clinique, specifically their Moisture Surge & All About Eyes products bc nothing else I’ve tried has ever knocked them out of top spot for me.
I like Clinique. I used it on and off throughout the years. A little pricey but not as expensive as some other department brands. Thank goodness for CeraVe and Cetaphil since it's readily available and affordable.
Wow thank you for that history lesson! I started using Clinique in the mid 70's as a teenager. And yes I went to the department store and slid those little knobs to find out what products were good for my skin 'type". It served its purpose for me at the time. Luckily I've always had an interest in my skin and took care of it early on, except for like you said the sun protection. I still used oils, cooked my pale skin, and tried to look like the girl from St. Tropez which is what I battle now that I am 60. The discoloration and loss of firmness is from too much sun exposure. So young women today have a huge advantage having the knowledge we didn't have back then.
Young people are soooo lucky today! There are so many options out there. I remember having to buy Clean and Clear and Noxzema.i too tote my face apart and am now doing TCA peels to get rid of past sun damage.
me too! Frying my skin with baby oil, nearly every Sunday on the beach! I don't even want to talk about discoloration on my arms but I do moisturize well .
Fellow pale-skinned Midwesterner teen from late 60s trying to be West Coast beach girl...slathered in baby oil with iodine-? - never heard of sunscreen. ...yikes
I worked as an art director for many years and designed ads for stores like Broadway Southwest, Macys, Abraham and Strauss. The Clinique ads were the most fun to design because of their strong, graphic approach which reflected their clean packaging. I still have some of them saved in my portfolio and use their products off and on. Incidentally, designing ads for cosmetic giants like Clinique, Lancome, Estee Lauder etc triggered my passion for skincare and eventually become a loyal fan of my most beloved, Dr. Dray.
@@jacquelinenoel2992 She's certainly my favorite UA-cam star. Haha, she's also inspired my husband to take better care care of his skin and wear sunscreen at the ripe old age of sixty.
@@durrainbarrett538 I have my man take care of his skin. He uses Eucerin, Cerave, sunscreen… We both have very nice skin. I’ve learned a lot from Dr. Dray. I started using RetinA in my late twenties, so my face is very soft, smooth, almost flawless. She has kept me up on my skin regime that now involves my whole body. Born and raised in KeyWest, and fair complexion makes me at a greater risk…Again, it’s good you recognized Dr. Dray.
When did you do this? I always thought the ads they sent in the mail during gift time in the 70s and 80s were so unique. The model would have a full head shot on the cover and her makeup would be flawless. I wish I had saved some.
@@liseerenee I started my career at Broadway Southwest in '87 in Phoenix, AZ where I designed most of the cosmetic ads for various vendors before moving to Macys in NYC in 1990. I also designed catalogs for Finley Fine Jewelry in NYC, but cosmetic and fragrance ads were by far my favorite products because you can really play around with the shapes of the bottles, lipsticks etc. Also love designing shoe ads for the same reason.
Thank you for doing this video, thoroughly enjoyed it! I work at the factory where Clinique is made (alongside other Estée Lauder Companies' skincare brands), and I use these products a lot - they are really simple, effective and as relevant today as they were back in 1968.
I was devoted to Clinique products for many years, used to wait for promotions so I could get sample sizes to travel with. Then I discovered less expensive brands. I loved Clinique but love Cerave, Eucerin and The Ordinary just as much, with less damage to my budget. Thanks for the background. ❤
Clinique was the “ideal” skincare when I was a teenager. I remember using the soap and the moisturizer, and felt so rich and fancy. Long way from Noxema. The first and only lipstick I used up entirely was Clinique.
I was destroying my face as a teen so my mom took me to Clinique. I think that removing all the Noxema and Sea Breeze and the Apricot scrubs ; ) and paring my routine down to three things with no fragrance is what saved it! I think so many people now see them as basic, but they were truly revolutionary and continue to produce solid products. Even after the 3 step routine, their sunscreens and even cosmetics (Black Honey) set trends for decades. Also, they're still one of the few lines that provides extensive skincare training. Many others still just rely on their reps to do their own research online.
@@bluebrie908 I have used Noxema since my teens. I am 70 years old and I still wash my face with it every night. Sometimes when you find something that works you just need to stick with it. It seems every time I’m tempted to try something new I tend to get breakouts or dry patches. I was happy to see you mention Noxema. I’ve always wondered if it would make Dr Dray cringe or 🙄. ❤️
Ive used Clinique since i was in my early 20’s. I am now in my mid 50’s. I love it. I have tried others just for the simple reason of trying and always come back to Clinique. I get many compliments on my skin even down to my daughters friends saying you have such nice skin. LOL
My mom worked for Clinique in Foley's (ha!) for 25 years. I remember her white coat that she chuckled about, the little slide box, the mint green packaging, all the training she attended, and all the products she would bring home (employee discounts) for both of us to try. I use some of their products to this day, mostly because they work with my skin and are fragrance free. A lot has changed since the 80s, but there are still a few products I love. Thanks for this video. It's like little Godwink from my mom.
I love this video! Do more like this. I've used Clinique products for decades. I was introduced to clinique back in the mid/late 70s as a teenager. It really helped me back then and still does. Now, I love many of their products for mature skin that really help my skin feel good.
I used to use the Clinique trio and it did wonders for my skin - back in high-school and college. It was def better than whatever drugstore stuff I had been using. Clinique was a huge luxury for us back then.... Thanks for your content - what interesting info!
I think the Clinique gives better results than drugstore products my question is how to incorporate some of the Clinique products with a retin a regimen I’m 40 and I’m still not on a retin a regime but at my next dr visit I will be starting retin a
60 year old chiming in. Loved the line back in the day, still love it now. I remember the solid milk grains and the 7th day scrub, don't use them now. But I do love the makeup removers as well as the dry skin toner and flagship yellow moisturizer for my combo skin. I saw the line as a more affordable option to Erno Lazlo at the time. It was a huge luxury but it really made a difference in my skin quality. Still does. And the iconic makeup bonuses. The raisin lip color to new clover blush and the blueberry powder shadow. Sooooooo many memories. It was my first grown up makeup and skincare. ❤️❤️❤️
Even though I studied hairdressing (cosmetology in the 80's and worked in salons & department stores for years, surprisisngly I have never purchased anything from Clinique. It had a young, fresh vibe and at the time I wasn't going for the natural look! Yes, Erno Laslo was a pioneer too. 👱♀️❤
I've always liked Clinique. I've used their products off and on for the past 10+ years, and I always appreciate an improvement in the texture and balance in my skin. They've always classified me as a skin type 3, and the amount of alcohol in the clarifying lotion has never really bothered my skin. I've more recently started using the Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly instead of the Gel, because it seems to work better underneath sunscreen and tretinoin.
My skin type is 3 too, but I usually use their Lotion 2, which is lovely. Still has got alcohol and is mildly astringent but very gentle at the same time. Tried number 4 back when my skin used to be super oily and this was line an acetone, stripping my skin to bare bones lol, never again.
I wanted to mention that I ended up buying Clinique because the samples I tried didn't break me out and really made my skin feel and look lovely. I've never felt manipulated by their presentation or advertising. I think their products do what they say and that they're great. 🌸
Im 56 and still use Clinique to this day. I can no longer use the 3 step system but I love many of the products. I use Clinique take the day off cleansing oil followed by Vanicream gentle face wash. Clinique clairifying lotion 2 at night only. Clinique moisture surge gel as my eye cream and Dramatically different moisturizing gel as my daytime hydration. Australian gold tinted spf and Clinique moisture surge face spray to top off my base makeup and powders. My ride and die my holy grails of Clinique. I have incorporated other items into my skin care routine but for me some of their products are not replaceable. Great video. Fun watching. I have to say when I lived in Italy for many years I was able to buy Helena Rubinstein there at the Profumeria which is their department store beauty counters. It is truly a shame it is not sold here anymore. It was absolutely beautiful high end cosmetics at it finest, true luxury and elegance. Hugs to you Dr. Dray
I started using Clinique 3 stop regime when I was in my mid twenties after I was out of school and earning enough money to pay for this. It really made a huge impact on my skin. I will be 65 next month and always get compliments on my skin and have no wrinkles. Some of that’s good genes, some skin care and always sunscreen. I had to stop using Clinique makeup in my mid forties when my skin seemed to be super sensitive. I changed to mineral makeup and everything seemed to calm down. Love your videos I’ve learned so much.
I could talk about this for hours. Clinique lured me in at age 13 with the bonus time (gift with purchase). I had bad acne and they nearly promised a cure with their 3 step program (I was type 3). Of course it didn't help with my acne, but I loved their makeup and still use it to this day, and some of their skincare too. I love that most of their products ARE fragrance free and Dr. Dray helped me realize that I had to insist on this to avoid irritation. I think their marketing was way better back in the 80s and 90s. They have so much more competition now. I loved hearing the history, Dr. Dray! I only knew it was a Lauder company.
Thanks for this information. Clinique was my first true skin care regimen in my late teen years when I decided it was time to get off the Noxema and Sea Breeze and start using "the good stuff". Over the years I drifted away from them and tried many other skin care products. Lately, though, I've gone back to Clinique for several of their newer products. It was great to hear their history.
Yes, I am older than dirt and I remember being a first adopter of Clinique (I still have some ancient GWP swag) and I used it for at least 10-15 years. I still use some Clinique products, but I have broadened my purchasing to many other companies. I LOVED the history of the line...thank you for that!
Dr. Dray I love that you created this video. In college I started using Clinique’s three step system and eventually I evolved to include sunscreen. I quit using the Clinique system because I found other products I preferred, but I have to give them credit for creating a skin care habit for life. I appreciate your skin care content as it has increased my knowledge about products. Enjoy your day.
I did the slidey thingy! My mom, 74 yrs old, had used the system since the 60's. Still has the bar in the green container... Perhaps it's genetics, could be mere consistency, but everyone had always complimented her skin and thought she was younger. I'm now starting Tretinoin and the Dramatically Different Moisturizer has been really helpful.
I started using Retin a (tretinoin) a year ago and JUST recently started moisturizing wit Clinique Dramatically Hydrating lotion and it has made a NIGHT and DAY difference.
I, too, am older and used Clinique right outa HS for many years. I had oily skin and developed adult acne but Clinique was good for my skin. The Type 3 clarifying Lotion had (still has?) salicylic acid in it. It was enough to exfoliate without stripping my skin. Later, I saw the dermatologist, Dr. Fulton in Tampa who developed Benzoyl Peroxide for acne - an absolute skin saver! I moved on to Paula's Choice at its inception, around 1994, and never looked back until lately. I need much more moisture due to LA's dry climate and that dreaded word --- aging!
I’m embracing Clinique once again after ruining my skin forcing to use drugstore brands 🥲. I prayed for Cerave & Cetaphil to work on my skin but developed cystic acnes on my cheeks which never happened when I was using Clinique. I have sensitive- oily skin, seborrheic dermatitis occasionally.
My mother put me on 3-step when I was struggling with my skin aged 17. I was type 3. It (really) did save my life. I still remember the ORIGINAL "turnaround cream", "moisture on-call", cliniques first anti-aging "stop signs". It was so much a part of our family life I landed up working for Clinique. I was so proud to don their coat 🤣 Clinique training is still well respected (for what its meant to be used for). By the way, Clinique first touted exfoliation for skin. Anyway, time passes, and I still use some of their products ☺️
I’ve used the three step skin care for 43 years. I switched from the regular soap to the mild as I got older, and switched from the strongest toner to now the mild number 1. I have always used the dramatically different moisturizer. The key is definitely the consistency of always doing your routine every day. All this switching of products I see young women do is so disturbing to your skin. There’s especially no need for fragrances and irritating “natural” essential oils. Keep it simple.
Type 3 over here. I stand by it. I've grown up with it, and swear by it. They were the first brand that taught us about the importance of exfoliation and the use of Salicylic Acid in a very direct, no frills manner. Over the last few years, I have experimented with other more luxe and expensive brands, but their Clarifying Lotion, and Turnaround Serum are still in my lineup because there is nothing else as good in my opinion. I also swear by their eye products - opthamologist tested (you say we can't really trust that I guess) - they never irritate my eyes like so many other brands do. I think they have fallen behind on the innovation front. I expected more groundbreaking products in the vitamin C and retinol arena - theirs is just average.
I have used Clinique Skincare and makeup almost exclusively since the early 80’s. I’m 57 now and I think being consistent has helped my skin. Last year I began to transition to anti-aging skincare and have gradually moved away from Clinique. Their basic products are pretty affordable, but I have found a number of less expensive options for anti-aging compared to Clinique. I still use the Take The Day Off cleanser as my first step. I haven’t found anything that works as well.
I use their cleanser the green gel one and it removes my makeup especially if I double cleanse. Love it I’ve never used a balm. I don’t like the sticky feel I guess and having to double cleanse I dno
I've used a lot of skincare in my 50+ years. 2 years ago I finally decided to try Clinique and was soooo pleasantly surprised that it works so well on my mature combination skin. I use their basics for cleansing and toning, a couple of their salicylic acid products to prevent breakouts (and they really do) and the Smart Clinical Repair line for treatment and moisture. Luvluvluv!
@@lindarindels4547 Hey Linda - I use the Wrinkle Correcting Eye Cream and the Multi-Dimensional Repair Treatment Retinol. I tried the Wrinkle Correcting Serum and even though it feels wonderful going on it was a bit too strong for me. They also have a new Wrinkle Correcting Cream for face but I don’t have it yet. Soon! 🌸
I still use clinique, always been a fan. The dramatically different moisturizing gel is my go to product. They often have really good sales where you buy one get one free. Love that
I LOVE the way the clinique cleansing bar smells. I have not purchased in about 20 years but I still remember the scent. I loved the way you press the toner out...the size of the product...the soap dish/holder...all the free stuff. I always thought consistency was a big part of both that and Proactive. It was made so easy. Simple packaging. Pre-made/curated by skin type.
I actually love Clinique. I’ve used the brand for at least 6 years now. I’m trying to move away from Clinique just because it’s not cruelty free. I’m trying Paula’s choice, but still didn’t find the perfect face wash. Clinique’s mild face cleanser is the best cleanser ever (at least for me).
I remember asking specifically at the clinique counter in my teens if they test on animals and she said no (ofcourse 🙄). I remember how they said they only 'tested on humans', and i believed it at the time.
I am a solid Clinique user for years, I love their skin care products and I have no desire to use anything else because of the quality results on my skin, I also use and like a lot of their cosmetics.
I used a lot of Clinique products in my younger days simply because they reliably did not irritate my skin. To younger people it may sound weird, but it used to be very difficult to find unscented, or generally less aggressive products back in the day. There's definitely a lot more variety nowadays, at all price points, of products that cater to more sensitive skin, or skin with various conditions, and more products that don't use as many potentially irritating ingredients, but back then, that was definitely not the case.
I have had to return to using Clinique for skin care that is not irritating. The products for my combination oily skin are still the most soothing I can find.
I started using Clinique in the 80's. It was the first higher end skin care that I had ever used. It felt fancy going to the counter and having products suggested to use and I also loved the free gifts with certain purchases. I also used several of their makeup products. I still like the perfume Happy. I moved on and haven't used their skin care for years but I always liked the products. This was fun hearing about an old favorite. Happy Friday, Dr Dray! I hope you, your sweet momma and little Tybee have a wonderful weekend!! 💗
My older sister worked for Este Lauder when Clinique was developed and introduced. She was promoted over to Clinique to do clinician training in stores. When I became a teenager she would give me tons of Clinique products. I was so lucky and I still use Clinique products to this day at 62 years old. I believe the "All About Eyes" gel is the best product they ever introduced. My sister is 75 and still uses some of the products.
I'm 68 and when I was VERY young, I saved my babysitting money, went to the department store and bought this trio of products. I never had acne but my skin was oily and I used to get this pimple close to the corner of my mouth when I was expecting my period. I loved these products and forbade my sister from touching them. Ironically, thanks to you, Dr. Dray, I use Vanicream Moisturizing Cream over my serum and always apply my Cotz sunscreen rain or shine. It's a lot cheaper and works! Thanks agaon.
I went to Clinique counter in college (1979) since they were the first cosmetic company I knew with products I could tolerate (I have lots of perfume and dye allergies). I used their 3 step routine (cleansing bar, toner and moisturizer) for almost 10 years until other products were coming out with fragrance free lines. It was pricey but the soap lasted a long time and had a great holder. I am very sun sensitive and waited for years for SPF lotions without PABA - wore lots of long sleeves and hats even in summer! So grateful for the innovative products available now.
When I was 36, I had been very, very ill and hospitalized for a couple of months. The powerful drugs I had been on somehow destroyed my face. It looked like orange peel and corn flakes. My tongue even turned black. My face hurt so bad! I tried everything gentle/sensitive that I could find at the drugstore, everything hurt except a coating of vaseline. I finally went to Clinique, and that first night I could sleep without my face hurting. My face started to heal in the first week. As the weeks went on it just got better. After a couple of months, I felt back to normal. I've tried other things over the years, but Clinique is still the only brand that does not irritate. Even Cetaphil is irritating. And the DDM lotion..........while it's rather basic and a little boring, it's perfect. Why have other brands not been able to create a similar one?? They used to have a Mild Clarifying Lotion (you had to shake it up because there was a pearly liquid in it, but they stopped making it). I use 1., and sometimes the Acne Solutions one, because it has salylic acid....even though my skin is dry and sensitive, this does not bother me in the least, and seems to make my skin smoother. I've also never had problems with any of their other products that I tried with their gift sizes.
I have used MANY Vitamin C products throughout my life, including the infamous Skinceuticals CE Ferulic. Clinique's Vitamin C serum 10% with Ascorbic acid has given me the same results or better than the skinceuticals one. Their Redness Relief cream is amazing and their simple Dramatically Different Lotion is one of the best creams I have used in conjunction with Tretinoin. Their CC cream (moisture surge) is SO good, and their mascara is the best for sensitive eyes. I honestly have nothing bad to say about the brand other than the fact that it's expensive.
I’ve used Clinique for about 20 years. It truly was a brand that has been their for each stage of skin care, from acne to now caring more about reducing the look of aging. I enjoy trying new brands and products but always go back to Clinique if my skin starts going a bit left…it always brings me back to normal after a few days of using it again.
I’ve just gone back to using the 3 Step system (1.0 clarifying lotion for me because I haven’t got time for drying my skin out with alcohol) and I forgot how much I enjoyed it! Pretty basic, but equally effective - especially with added SPF to finish!
hello to you, I use the 1.0 lotion too, I haven't found anything better, better than the paula's choice 2% S.Acid. the clinique one is softer and yet more efficient !
I have to give Clinique props in that it got me and many of my friends to understand the importance of skincare early on. I was 13 or so the first time I went to a Clinique counter. At the time, I had super oily skin, but one of their reps told me I still needed to use moisturizer, I was like 😳 I still use their cleansing balm because it’s the only one I’ve tried that doesn’t burn my eyes and their cleansing oil for the same reason.
Hey Dr Dray, I used Clinique from high school, off and on into adult hood. I like Clinique, but it and everything else is getting so expensive. My mom wanted me to have a "regiment", so I started with Clinique. I always went to my local mall and picked it up. Great times😉.
Thanks, and I have a question. What do I need to do with powder makeup products that irritate me or just no longer look good on me? I hate to throw it away and waste money. I know I can't let someone else use it, that's not very sanitary 😄. Thanks again for the help
Yes, I visited a Clinique counter about 20 years ago. I bought the 3 step products plus some. It burnt my face so bad I had to call my dermatologist’s office and I was told to throw it away and stay away from it. They suggested Cetaphil to help calm and heal the skin, which it did. I have stayed away from the skin care at beauty counters because of this. I’ve used Cetaphil ever since but now will have to find something similar since the introduction of niacinimide into their jar of cream I’ve used for years.
I have been using Clinique facial products as well as makeup for many many years. I have never purchased something that I was disappointed in, that’s for sure! Thank you for this very interesting history lesson on Clinique.
Yes I started using Clinique in high school. I'm 50 now. I still use it along with a lot of other brands as well. Clinique has the hands down best lipsticks.
So many good memories! My mother is a devoted Clinque user from the beginning and has beautiful skin ( she's 81). Thank you for this entertaining and informative segment.
Thank you Dr Dray for sharing such an interesting video on the Clinique brand. I used their skin care when their wasn't much information available on how to care for our skin. I think we thought that nice packaging and expensive skin care was the way to keep our skin nice. Many years later, we have you to help keep us informed to keep our skin healthy and happy 🥰 My skin is sensitive, my skin loves the Neutrogena gentle fragrance free cleanser 💕 Take care everyone
I did the little slidey things when I was a kid! Their dramatically different lotion was my first moisturizer, and I still think it's a pretty good one. My mom swears by it.
When I was in my late teens, I had no skin care routine, dry skin, breakouts and dark spots on my cheeks due to picking at my breakouts; I decided to try out the Clinique 3 step system, and it was a game changer for me. If nothing else, it provided me with a routine and products that were not irritating my skin. I used it consistently for a couple years, then I started looking for similar drugstore products. This was when UA-cam, blogs and Instagram were somewhat in their infancy. More than 10 years later, my skin is still clear and thriving. Finding the right products, staying consistent and not trying too many things too often has really been the trick, but it all started with Clinique.
That Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion is certainly addicting. It is just so nice. The Lauder family had what it takes to market beauty, for sure. They knew there was a lack of skin care/cosmetics in every beauty counter for younger customers, for something a bit more affordable, for the customer who didn’t already have a loyalty to a more expensive brand, either. Later, they could transition them to more expensive and sophisticated lines. Lol! I worked as a “Beauty Advisor” for Merle Norman back in the 80’s. Loved their cold cream and Miracol. I am 61 now and have lovely skin due to a consistent skin care routine since teen years. My loyalties to different brands have changed at times throughout the years, and my personal philosophy is that it’s the consistency, and good, clean, simple products that give results.
So cool to hear the history of Clinique and to learn about Dr. Orentreich! Thanks! My mom took me to Clinique for my first “real” skincare products, and I used them for years. I have to say, the 3-step might have flaws but it really did improve my skin compared to the harsh drugstore products I was using in the 90s. I lost my mom 4 yrs ago, so Clinique - with its sales people in white coats and that pale green branding color - always hold a place in my heart with fond memories of my teen years and my amazing, wonderful mom.
I started using Clinique in high school & continued to use alot of their products up until the past few years (I'm 68). I just found as I got older I needed "more." I was never able to use Estee Lauder or Lancome...they broke me out (probably the fragrance!). These days I use a variety of cosmetic/skincare brands. I've been lucky to have inherited my mom's good skin & have few wrinkles. I will be generous & give Clinique some of the credit.
Hi Dr. DRAY CLINIQUE makeup was a blessing for me in my twenties as I had already developed a sensitivity to fragrance ! It was the only game in town then. A doctor steered me to Cetaphil for rosacea in my fifties but I still use Cinique when I need make up . I will always be a fan because it is fragrance free! Enjoyed this video . Thanks ! Love to you and Mom and Tybee 💚
Lol, I used my first paycheck as a new nurse to take myself to the Bullock's counter [west LA] and "take the test" and start taking care of my skin. Until then I was Noxema cream all the way!! What a n informative and fun for me walk down memory lane. At that time, those were the only products in that line... I have been an on again/off again customer since. Some of their products are timeless. Thanks again.
I wish Clinique hadn’t gotten so expensive. I’m on a tight budget, and I use CeraVe and Simple brands now. Non of its anti-aging products did much for my aging skin. I used the 3-step system for many years, and it taught me the importance of good skin care.
I’m just about to turn 65 yrs and I have been wearing Clinique products for most of my adult life. After having some horrible allergic reactions to fragranced products it was the hypo-allergic claims from Clinique that won me. To this day I still use, and love many products from their range of skincare and makeup. I live in the northern part of Australia and I feel that the skincare routine that Clinique promoted plus their early inclusion of active ingredients has helped my skin to stay healthy and for the most part still looks considerably younger than my age. 🤪😉 I have always loved the packaging with its pale green and lilac tones.
'Helena' Rubenstein emigrated to Melbourne Australia (from Poland) in 1902. Soon after she opened her first salon, marketing the concept of glamour as a science... 'diagnosing' clients skin conditions and 'prescribing' treatments. HR's history is very interesting, as was today's video. Yes, I do remember the Clinque skin 'computers'! Also growing up in Australia we had a door to door Yves Rocher rep. (French botanical skincare & cosmetics) and Avon of course. 👱♀️❤
I had an Aunt who was a huge collector of Avon and she often gave me little gifts from the children's line. And I remember the Avon lady coming to the door. Of course those days are long gone but such fun memories. Hope you have a nice weekend, Nada! 💞
I sold Clinique in the 80's when I was in my early 20's. My skin was always too sensitive to use the clairifying lotion-it burned my skin. I also couldn't use the dramatically different moisturing lotion (aka ddml in the industry), it had mineral oil in it that my skin couldn't take. I don't know if these formulations have changed since then or not, but I do know they've added a whole array of products to what was once a very limited, yet popular, 3-step skincare regime. Back then Clinique treated their staff very well. I stayed overnight in 4-star hotels where we received intensive training in selling current products and new product launches prior to coming to market. We were given lots of samples and a $100 'gratis' where we could pick out any items we wanted in order to familiarize ourselves with their product-line first hand! Thanks for putting out this video, it brought up so many great memories!
My mom bought a set for my birthday a year ago. I of course always use cereve and The ordinary moisturizer, thanks to your channel. I ran out of my moisturizer and decided to give the Clinique a try and I hated it! It’s so greasy and my skin just doesn’t look the way it does when I use my moisturizer from the Ordinary. I can’t thank you enough for the information you put out here, it really does feel like we are slaves to marketing tactics in a lot of situations. Who has the time or know how to find accurate information about skin care? I used to spend a ton of money on skin care and know my favorite regimen costs me about 25$ and it actually works. Thank you!!
i loved this bit of skincare history! it would be awesome if you did similar videos for other brands like LRP, Avene, Cerave, Eucerin, etc. Clinique was probably my first "proper" skincare routine. I liked the liquidy yellow lotion. Happy Friday 🌺
I discovered Clinique in the late 60s, when I was a teen. Their skin care routine and makeup products helped my oily, acne-prone skin. I used them for many years. Of course I really needed to see a dermatologist, but my parents weren’t on board with that. My acne cleared up eventually but left me with icepick scars. I finally saw a dermatologist when I developed cystic acne in peri menopause. She prescribed Retin-A. Progressively stronger formulations cleared up the acne. Dermabrasion helped minimize scarring. Now I’m 71 and my skin looks fairly good for my age. I see Dermatology for annual skin checks. But you, Dr. Dray, are my go-to for skin care information and product recommendations. And yes, I use sunscreen every day. Even in the rain! Thank you! ❤️
I only used Clinique for some years in my twenties and it wrecked my skin barrier! I didn’t know at the time of course, but looking back, my skin was so irritated, dry, oily, and it really aggravated my acne. The products weren’t necessarily that bad in themselves, but doing the full 3-step system based on skin types just didn’t work for me. Now I’m much more intentional in picking products for skin concerns rather than type. And I still use their moisture surge gel cream at times 😊
Clinique was the very first high end brand skin care and makeup products I used. It was largely because of its hypoallergenic and fragrance free claims. I had sensitive skin as a teen and young adult so I opted for it and went to the beauty counter in Macy’s or Gimbels or Gertz (anyone remember those last two?!) I was also attracted to their bonuses! They would have specials twice a year at different stores that included some “free” products (a makeup bag, lipstick, moisturizer, mascara and other products) as a gift with minimum purchase. I still use some of their products 45 years later!!!
Hi Dr. Dray, I used Clinique skincare products in high school. I really enjoyed their moisturizing lotion. I also remember using Coppertone sunscreen with SPF 6. The SPF in sunscreen was pretty low from what i remember. Not good at all ,as i still have sun spots from sun damage. And to be honest, I didnt wear sunscreen on the daily back then like I do now. Thank you for all the effort you put in to your channel. I really appreciate it. Im a long time subscriber. Have a great day!
I heard about Clinique from a college roommate in 1970 when it first came out. I used it for years, but have evolved to an ingredient based routine. I still use moisture surge (knowing I am spending way too much for a moisturizer!). It is such an elegant product. Clinique is an iconic baby boomer skin care line.
I started taking of my skin in 1967 when I was 10 yo. My love of skincare started because of an article in Seventeen magazine. Back then it was VERY different than it is now. It was wholesome, a term no longer used or applicable in the 21st century! I started with a Revlon skincare system that had a lemon scent and light yellow color. I did move on to Macys department store and found Clinique. I took the test with the sliders and bought everything. The first time I used it, I had a terrible allergic reaction. I took it all back and a salesperson at the Lancôme counter got my attention. I became a Lancôme addict for over 30 years. Clinique only had a bar of soap as the cleanser for many years. I noticed they have a milky cleanser now. Excellent video with great historical info. Thanks!
I still use Clinique. I started using Clinique when I was 12 and I am 52 now. I think Clinique helped young people take control of their skin and it is a good concept to cleanse your skin, exfoliate your skin and moisturize your skin daily. I know I have much better skin because of Clinique. My skin looks much better than most people my age and I don’t have to get other treatments like a lot of people my age do. I don’t need Botox and I like my skin the way it is. I thank Clinique for that!
I’ve used the Clinique dramatically different yellow moisturizer in the original formula for years and it has saved me alot of grief from my acne prone / oily skin in my late teens and early twenties. It is so lovely to get the promotional free gift after purchasing this every year. I’m currently using the dramatically different hydrating jelly (2 pumps) with two drops of Sunday Riley’s U.F.O. oil daily and it works wonders!
Great video! I love Clinique. It was the first brand with a decent sunscreen in the 90ties and a comprehensive brand that allowed you to put together a skincare routine.
Clinique moisturizer line is hands down best for my super dry mature skin. And it makes my skin look plumped and best part is, the skincare line is they have no fragrance in the ingredients which even better than most skincare products that have fragrance products.
Clinique products were my first skin care routine. I used it for years. I'm 56 now. My beautiful mother bought it for me when I was a teenager. Such wonderful memories.
My friend that is over 60 her skin is always glowing and smooth, one day I asked her what skincare she uses and she said Clinique since she was young, I guess it works very well.
Love this more historical view of why we buy certain brands! This is great! Anyway, yes, I did buy Clinique, back in high school (the 80s). I think I bought the milder version of the soap, the mildest toner, and the famous yellow moisturizer. It was fine, but my skin grew dry and sensitive when I got to college and was exposed to the harsh New England winters. Back then, Elizabeth Arden had a sensitive skin line that was very, very mild and, for lack of a better word, cushion-y. Much better suited to the climate I was suddenly exposed to. Over the decades, my skincare needs have changed and my skincare has evolved. But the Clinique skincare was my first introduction to a basic, three-step, skincare regimen. It's the sort of ritual that one learns early and sticks to (with important additions, such as sunscreen by day and serums in the evening) for a lifetime.
I really enjoyed learning the history of Clinique. When it came time to start a skin care routine and wearing make-up , my mom took me to the Clinique counter. I had forgotten about moving the slides to determine your skin type. I used the line exclusively for about fifteen years. It was about that time that Philosophy came onto the scene and I started using that for a few years. I then switched to Origins, but hated the fragrance. I now enjoy First Aid Beauty, Vani Cream and The Ordinary.
Leonard Lauder is a fantastic man. Met him a few times in London when I used to work for Origins and he was always very friendly. He is also very protective of all Estēe Lauder brands.
I was a big fan of Clinique after having a reaction to a Charles Revson product. So bought into the whole hypoallergenic thing and it was good for years but not cheap. So I moved to Olay and loved the products with sunscreen built in 20 ish years ago. Now it is neutrogena cerave and Misshi because of this channel and skin looks sensational thank you.
Yes, I used Clinique from age 28 to 53 when I retired and quit wearing any makeup. I used mainly eyeshadow, liner and blush as well as the wash and hydrate routine which I did not give up at retirement.
I really love buying different skin care products and experimenting, but I always come back to Clinique's Moisture Surge line, as well as their All About Eye creams and the Cleansing balm. Also, I can only use Clinique's makeup as everything else causes my skin to itch.
And I did, I routinely get compliments on my beautiful but still oily skin.☺️ All hail to, Retin A!🙌🙌🙌
My dad 73 … I wish he would at least wear sunscreen
I'm 75 and Clinique was my go-to as it was for everyone back then. I, too, used to love it when it was gift-pack time and, believe it or not, I still use their big white comb that I got in a gift pack which must now be about 50 years old!
I LOVED the GWP sets. It was a thing to get them and show them off when I was in junior high!
This is such a beautiful story. Lovely memories. Thank you for sharing
I used Clinique since I was 16 so. ai am now in my 47 . I LOVE IT 🥰
I loved this style of video! Kinda like some skincare History! Would love to see more "why do we buy" videos! 💖
Thanks for watching. & glad you enjoyed
Me too!
Hear hear
Loved this too
I was a counter manager for Clinique for years. Out of all the cosmetic brands I’ve worked for in the past 20+ years Clinique gave consultants the best training and was an amazing and fun brand to work for. However, being able to try the highest of brand name products I still go to my CeraVe products with the best of results.
Ooh, interesting! Thank you for sharing! 😊
CeraVe just doesn't work for me. I wish it did!! What a cool story. Love that.
Really CeraVe?
I was a huge clinique fan from teenagehood onward. I still like the brand and just bought some for my teenager. As my own skin has matured cerave is also my go to. I love it and so does my skin
I loved Clinique. It still has a special place in my heart.
So true!
I’m about to turn 58 and I’ve used Clinique since high school. I try a ton of skincare but I always return to my Clinique, specifically their Moisture Surge & All About Eyes products bc nothing else I’ve tried has ever knocked them out of top spot for me.
I'm late but I agree Moisture Surge is still amazing even though I think they changed the formula in recent years
@@glittery_cucumber
I used to love moisture surge. But I do think they changed the formula because now it is breaking out my face.
In the 70s? Crying in Eastern European 😭😭😭
Dray.
What a nice remark about Dr. Dray. I’m a fan of her vlogs.
Wow! That's good to know. Thanks for sharing.
I was devoted to Clinique products for many years, used to wait for promotions so I could get sample sizes to travel with. Then I discovered less expensive brands. I loved Clinique but love Cerave, Eucerin and The Ordinary just as much, with less damage to my budget. Thanks for the background. ❤
Will you please do a video on Erno Laszlo products?
@@marilynpresley9942 Pre children I had tried their products. My skin looked good but ultimately too costly. We'll see if Dr Dray has an opinion
I still use and love Clinique. And I swear by Noxema.
Black Honey 4evr!
I bought a tub of Noxema a while back just to smell it and feel it in my hands. I used it a little. I really brought back a happy nostalgia.
👍🏼
I think the Clinique gives better results than drugstore products my question is how to incorporate some of the Clinique products with a retin a regimen I’m 40 and I’m still not on a retin a regime but at my next dr visit I will be starting retin a
@@langyd4518 put it under the lotion at bedtime
👱♀️❤
@@nadab4750 nope, you're right 1980s definitely did not have the natural vibe. That's for sure! 😝 spiked or big hair and colorful clothing/makeup.
I still have new clover blush and some of the lipsticks! Loved the brand and still do but I have switched to CeraVe.
Lol
I’m just a little younger than you, and when I was in high school *all* the girls wore Clover blush.
I'm also using the gel under tretinoin! Yellow on top!
Clinique is loaded with chemicals and fragrance and it ages u
The gift got us all to come back 🤪
Thanks for this information.
Lol, I had this same journey from noxzema and sea breeze (sensitive skin because it was less drying) to 3 step Clinique!
Hi Ann, can I ask what brands you switched to? Thank you
I did the slidey thingy!
@drdrayzday looks like you've been hacked
If y’all see my mom, y’all be using Clinique too! I respect it. The powders blushes cleansers lipsticks, the colour pop 😍😍🫶🏼
Can I ask what brands you use? Thank you 🌻
I've used a lot of skincare in my 50+ years. Yep, I try to hit the 30% off sales. Makes it much more affordable.
My first job behind the counter was with Clinique. They had very impressive training for us. Fond memories 💕
To this day that green is my favorite color! 💚 That marketing worked on me back then and I hate to admit that! 🤣 I still use some Clinique today
Try the Cetaphil bar soap
My Clinique holy grails are the 'All About Eyes', their cleansing balm, and I will forever keep buying their lash primer.
I don't know why, but All About Eyes caused clogged pores under my eyes.
I really enjoy most of their products, especially the moisture surge serum, moisturizer and lip balm 🥰
I adore the Moisture Surge line! Feels so good on my skin.
The only moisturiser that doesn’t break me out
When I was 36, I had been very, very ill and hospitalized for a couple of months.
Dr. DRAY I love that you mentioned the legends of dermatologic. Maybe a future series? Thank you
I have used MANY Vitamin C products throughout my life, including the infamous Skinceuticals CE Ferulic.
You can usually find them discounted at Marshall’s or tj maxx
hello to you, I use the 1.0 lotion too, I haven't found anything better, better than the paula's choice 2% S.Acid. the clinique one is softer and yet more efficient !
I have to give Clinique props in that it got me and many of my friends to understand the importance of skincare early on. I was 13 or so the first time I went to a Clinique counter. At the time, I had super oily skin, but one of their reps told me I still needed to use moisturizer, I was like 😳
I still use their cleansing balm because it’s the only one I’ve tried that doesn’t burn my eyes and their cleansing oil for the same reason.
@@joeleeashley3853 throw them out and replace them with bare minerals products don’t use them
@@langyd4518 Thanks for the advice.
It was out of our price range, but really interesting how they got their start. Thank you for sharing this. I think in the 80's I used mostly Noxzema.
Happy Friday Dr! I really enjoyed the story of Clinique. You should continue doing these history videos :)
Happy Friday & thanks for watching
I know exactly what you mean when you say “the little slidey things” 🤣. Those silver balls to select your skin type.
@@stregadisalem732 I always thought they were so fun 😂
I still use the dramatically different gel. I love it!
Can I ask what brands you found possibly better than Clinique?
So cool to hear the history of Clinique and to learn about Dr. Orentreich! Thanks! My mom took me to Clinique for my first “real” skincare products, and I used them for years. I have to say, the 3-step might have flaws but it really did improve my skin compared to the harsh drugstore products I was using in the 90s. I lost my mom 4 yrs ago, so Clinique - with its sales people in white coats and that pale green branding color - always hold a place in my heart with fond memories of my teen years and my amazing, wonderful mom.
I live Clinique I think they have been ahead of their time and I think that they have products that truly outshine all other products in skincare !
Hi Dr. DRAY
CLINIQUE makeup was a blessing for me in my twenties as I had already developed a sensitivity to fragrance !
I was a Noxema user before Clinique. I loved the stuff. I thought it was high end back in junior high school. 😄
OMG Bullocks! I haven't heard or read that name is years. Memory lane!
Noxema was good stuff. Fixed my rosacea break outs. Don't know how, but it gently but thoroughly cleaned my skin.

👱♀️❤
Greetings Nada B hope u r well n Happy Friday😀👍💜….
Hi Nada B. I remember my grandmother and great aunt being fans of Avon.
I loved Avon. Even became a rep for a short time. Spent more than I made, I’m afraid.
Love this video! So interesting 😯
Loved those white Coates, I worked for Clinique for many years. The Lauder Family is still the gold standard.
Thank you!!
Clinique and simple skincare is still my go-to. Simple and fragrance free.
i loved this bit of skincare history! it would be awesome if you did similar videos for other brands like LRP, Avene, Cerave, Eucerin, etc.
Thank you! ❤️
I LOVE this video Dr Dray. As someone whose background is in marketing but who enjoys skincare and dermatology, it was really insightful.
Ditto!
There should be a sub fan club 😊
In the 70’s and 80’s, I recall that SPF 6 was considered pretty significant protection.
Yes, as a young woman I was drawn to this brand & my Gfs too,
it was what we all aspired to....knowing our skin would at its best using these products
Thanks!
My regular skin care routine revolves around Clinique and Clarins products. Both have really amazing product lines 💜
Being 70, I certainly used, and still use, some Clinique products. This was an interesting explanation of the origins of Clinique.
My mother used to use the bar soap, the toner and the moisturiser. I still remember their characteristic green packaging in the bathroom.
