Hearing this quote and what Nash/Sullivan said about WM XIV when Austin won the Title, I’m surprised that those WCW guys knew WWF was going to win the war, in the hype of the MNW of 1998.
I remember watching this on live TV at the time. The match took about 15 - 20 minutes to play out, and people have been talking about it ever since. That's 24 years and counting. Absolute legends!

When Mick had the top of his ear ripped off from a botched spot involving the ropes, Bischoff's response was "Another Mick Foley incident. Why can't he just have a regular match?" Now that I'm older, I agree with both of them. I can't watch Mick's stuff anymore. He took way too many bumps that he didn't need to take and it's a miracle he's still alive, let alone walking.

This was the match that changed Mankind from just an asylum inmate to Mankind (as in actual mankind) never giving up. This is what I told my boys as we watched. Mankind never giving up. Spit death in the eye and never give up. It was hope. This match became legend for more than they meant it too.

I was at this event in Pittsburgh, he was tossed right to my side, I had a great view of Mick and the most insane bump I’ve seen in 30 years being a wrestling fan. We in the arena thought he was dead 💀
that's the scary thing. Undertaker tossing Mick was massive and would have killed any normal man...but at least it was "planned." The fact that second bump through the roof of the cage was not planned and Foley still came out both alive and able to move his limbs is even crazier

That something indicative of JUST concussions? I feel it doesn't even take a concussion to make visible and audible the frailties of the human recollection. Hell - it doesn't even take a drop off a cell to do that. A walk into the kitchen is enough, so I can't imagine what two drops and a very physical match would do. Additionally the post-match anecdote about the thumbtacks was originally between Mick and Undertaker with Undi saying in a gruff tone "MICK, LOOK AT YOUR ARM!" So either his head was way more messed up than anyone's said because of the match, or Pritch or whomever is using some inventive misremembering of his own to put himself closer to the story. No clue which it is tbh.
Some people are just that tough. Foley, funk, jun kasai, nick gage, etc... Lived their entire adult lives putting themselves through literal car crashes every weekend night and can still function within society. The latter 2 arent as respected as of now, but us modern age "know it all" internet fans would be surprised at how their peers view them on a performance level, mental level, and moral level. The 4 hardcore legends who are true to the bone badass.

Will never EVER forget this. 2 of the greatest EVER.WWF ATTITUDE 4 LIFE. Once in a lifetime experience. JR also made this incredible. Nobody will ever be as good as JR.
One of the things I always remember about the first fall off the cage is Howard Finkel's horrified reaction to it on one of the replays. Never forget it.
What sold it for me was the punch Undertaker gave Mankind after the two big falls. Mankind just collapses like a lifeless corpse. I imagine that was probably an involuntary reaction. The way he goes down just completely sells the bumps. We all know how a guy sells a punch. That’s not how a wrestler sells a punch. That’s how a damn near dead man sells a punch and it was just brilliant.
Oh Yeah, when his legs just buckled beneath him from a punch that Taker held back 95% of... Instantly it was evident that he wasn't kayfabe selling at this point. Mick was out on his feet. His bell got rung so hard, it has to be cracked like the liberty bell. It was genuinely terrifying watching him try blankly continue the match with his lights out, as well as no one home!
Yes! I've always thought that THAT moment said a lot in high volumes as well as at the end, when he tries to throw one leg up to kick out, as Taker got the 3 count. Like there was still about 20% of him still able to GO, somewhere in that mind and body of Mick's... If he could have added another 30% to that 20% that was left, it would have been enough energy to kick out... But truly... He just didn't have enough, but the important part is... In the end, he still had SOME! And he walked away. Shoulders to lean on, yes. But still, NO medics at all until he was out of sight behind gorilla. Pure... Simply fucking pure.

This match forever changed WWE. Still to this day in my 30 plus years of watching wrestling this is one of the most epic matches ever. This match put Mick Foley over the top forever. I recall he even asked Russo if that match was better than Taker vs. HBK in the Cell and Russo said yes. Whoever was in the audience got their money's worth that night.
Like any wrestler need's Russos approval for what is and isn't a great match lol. Russo could have told Foley the match was shit and it wouldn't have meant a damn thing...Russo doesn't and never will know great wrestling. This match was solidified as legendarium the moment the bell rang...it sucks Foley thought he needed to ask Russo of all people what HE thought to believe as much.
Mick Foley may have never been the greatest technical wrestler but he is a god of an Entertainer he will do anything for his fans and that's what makes him a legend.
That match legitimately made me think a man was dead, even rewatching it now it’s incredible that Mick didn’t at the very least come out of that paralyzed.
This moment was when I became a hardcore fan...I rented this ppv and could not believe what I saw...At the time, I didn't know what to make of it as everyone knew wrestling was "fake" but this, put me in a state of disbelief and shock as I was so impressed on how a person could be so courageous...I had a new found respect for the business to this day because of this match..Like many others, this will never be done again but wow, it is still unbelievable now..What a show of tenacity and fortitude
The good old days when pro wrestling was unmissable. Everyone would talk non-stop about it on the Monday's (after a PPV) and Tuesday's (after Nitro and RAW) at school. Cool kids and dorks/nerds, everyone liked at least one thing about it. But today? I feel bad for the kids that watch it. They have a shit product nowadays.
I grew up at the best time. I was a little kid in the eighties so I was able to fully enjoy Hulkamania, was 13-14 when Sunny came in and was at the pissed off teen stage when DX and Stone Cold were at the top. Got to see the greatest match ever (Savage v Steamboat at WMIII) and the (at least at the time) most awe inspiring display of will in wrestling history by Mick at Hell in a Cell.
I still love watching this match, but it never recaptures the experience of watching it live at the time. It was just unreal. Those huge bumps, the amazing commentary, the crowd going mad, it was just perfect. It was probably my fave WWE (WWE) moment ever. I would love to have been in the crowd for it.
Dr.Romascavage used to be my primary care physician. He has a ton of wrestling memorabilia in his office. I loved going there, it almost made being sick worth it. He has the best stories.
It's so sad I'm watching this in 2020 and it's almost like a postmortem of professional wrestling. I remember watching this match thinking these men were larger than life. This could not be done today under any circumstances. Wrestling is dead.
If Jim Ross does not do what he does during this match making Mick out to be the face who is forcing him to yell stop the goddamn match after Foley takes hits that would hospitalize a normal man and even Taker is concerned.. You just know this match was one for the books. And to hear Bruce Prichard tell the story is like listening to if God had a voice. This match made what ECW did look like childsplay.

Mick was hurt and a lot of the guys from ECW were also hurt during their matches, legitimately but the big difference here his that Mick stayed down, no one in ECW sold shit. They would slice themselves open with cheese graters, jump off ridiculous high altitudes only to back into the ring, pin each other and kick out like nothing happened. You can even hear a person in the crowd say "Mick, finish the match Mick!" That's the mindset of the ECW crowd. They didn't care. Mick was hurt, he sold it, they had a long pause before he went back in and Vince coming down to check on Mick was the icing on the cake. In other words, psychology. ECW never had that. You became concerned for Mick. You were never concerned for Mick or anyone in ECW because they got back up regardless.
My favorite match of all time, not just cause the big bumps, but the way they work the rest of the match after the two bumps. To me the first bump killed the old Mankind and let Foley shine his wrestling genies. Mic Foley is one of the God's of wrestling, so is Taker. Also King and JR on call puts this to a masterpiece. They are best tandom announce team.
Mick took it to the edge and beyond, i think what motivated him was the need for continued success and acceptance as the most daring wrestler of all times who would put his life on the line to entertain, that way becoming a sure fire attraction, making it impossible for Vince to shelve him
People will remember this match for years. People in 20 years will be saying" I remember a guy that got thrown off the top of a cage and threw the top of the cage in the same match". They may not remember the names but they will remember the match.

King after Mankind gets chokeslammed through the cell: "That's it. He's dead." Foley later said that had he taken a "proper" bump on that chokeslam that he might have been killed.
Me and my buddies were huge wrestling marks and had our own hotline in Metro Detroit about it & I remember having to work till midnight that night and my buddies showed up when I got off all excited and saying you have to watch this match. Now! Luckily they recorded it. Still remember that whole night to this day.
Obviously but you can be in control of a fall in regards to your timing of the turn and leading into the bump. Saying that he's in control of the bump doesn't mean that he's breaking the laws of physics 😑

My dad was at the event live he thought Foley was legitimately dead when he hit the announce table he was sitting about 5 feet behind the announce table he said he sat in silence for the rest of the match and show after Foley got up from the bump
There have been spots in wwe that have been huge but it never got over the way it should have because JR wasn’t on commentary. JR is the greatest commentator of all time. He is such a hype machine
i remember watching that match and was very concerned for his health but i stood up and applauded after the match in appreciation for what mick put himself through to entertain the fans. i would have totally understoof if they stopped the match but to cointinue on shows how tough mick is and i will forever appreciate what he did.
That's likely because Benoit did steroids for a long time, or at least that's what everyone said. However Foley took just as hard of bell ringers than Benoit.
It's kinda sad we won't ever see something like this in the WWE ever again. Taking mega bumps is an art that should not be snuffed out completely. Mick knew he didn't need to do this, but he wanted to, he wanted to give us a great moment, and he delivered. Thank you Mick!

Sponsers not wanting to advertise violence, a younger demographic and target audience, a public outlashing at head trauma and PTE from chair shots, mostly from the CHIRS BENIOT fallout, the PG era had nothing todo with Owen Harts death.
I love how Conrad is gushing over the first HBK/Undertaker Hell in the Cell, and while from a technical point it was a better match, Shawn's bump onto the table was a picnic compared to both of the bumps Mic did.
That match wasn’t a one bump match though. There was so much to that match and it all flowed perfectly. It was a perfect match and then you add in Kane debuting. This match was, for better or worse, a two bump match. Everything they did after the chokeslam through the cage didn’t matter. No one remembers anything besides the shot of Foley with the tooth in his nose and the fact they used tacks.
There's nothing more then the bumps. They started on the top and two minutes later Foley was down. When they came up again, well, the second bump came a minute after. Then some brawl, a piledriver, backdrop on thumbs, chockslam on thumbs tombstone. Four wrestling moves in one of the most famous wrestling match ever.
jr's call helped make this match too. the good god almight good almighty is probably one of the greatest calls in pro wrestling history and it was a geniuine reaction
At about 5:25 when talking about Michaels vs Undertaker HIC match why did he say “I know you hate it” to Bruce? Bruce has always praised that match and called it one of the greatest matches ever
I was at that King of the Ring at the old Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, my dad and I were seated at an angle from the side of the cell Mick took that bump off to the floor. It was like he fell forever, like time stood still. Absolutely surreal and very scary. I'll never forget my dad, with his trademark dry sarcasm, stood there with all these screaming fans around us just shrugging and going, "Well... he's dead." We knew at the time it was one of the most over the top outrageous matches we'd ever seen but all these years later hearing people from inside the business putting into perspective from where they were at in their careers and job roles at the time only further lends credence to the impact it made. My favorite line was from Kevin Sullivan who was the booker in WCW who saw it said something along the lines of "It's over, boys, that's it. They won."
I like Conrad because he asks different questions that no one else does in these interviews. I stumbled on him and JR as well as him and Bruce. I've really enjoyed how he conducts the interviews and gets more in depth with the behind the scenes stuff. Always a really good listen.

Just binged disk 1-3 of the hell in the cell DVD. Amazing. The Foley Taker match was by far and away the best of the bunch. Just amazing work by both, Foley obviously. I completely forgot Terry Funk took a choke slam during the match. Great stuff.
Mick became his character, Mick will tell you his ability is being able to take more pain than anyone else. In fact I believe Mick actually enjoyed pain, Ive seen him smile many times after a hard hit
I know Mick, the RAW was in Cleveland the next day. That was the first time Mick didn’t hang with me after the match when he was in my area. I remember my girlfriend at the time yelling at him when he called us asking him what the hell was wrong with him! I couldn’t believe what he did. He’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet but both him and Terry are crazy!
Greatest match ever Mick Foley is god. He could have fell on the floor he could have fell on the Spanish announce crew or even more possible he could have fell on those ginormous balls of his.

I used to have VCR tapes of raw and ppvs. Most were taped over or lost. The few things I have that I remember is the last minutes of Bret vs Owen cage match ppv. And I believe the ridiculous hell in a cell 6 way with rikishi. I barely remember it because I was at the end of my fandom. It was when rikishi got tossed off the cell into a dump truck and as he landed you saw the mattress bounce up from under the hay. Wish I still had all the raws and even the Nitro's I hated wcw but my grandma loved wrestling so she would watch one and tape it while another TV recorded the other.
Hell in the cell was so special, the 1st two were the best. Cactus v Triple H was Great. Then the wm 15 and the six man weren't as good but still had that magic. Great stuff
I listen to this again today on the way home from the doctor and I had to watch it again tonight and everything about it was perfect from taker throwing Foley to Jr and king asking for help it was all there in my opinion it's the most memorable match of all time and only Foley and Taker could have pulled it off and I think only Jr and King could call the way they did I wonder how years this match took off Foley's career

Bruce tells this differently then the other versions I've heard. I always heard most that stuff wasn't planned, and even the first throw off the cage Vince had said No to but they did it anyways, and going thru the cage wasn't planned at all...
Mick said Vince initially said no but Mick convinced him by comparing it to missing an elbow drop jumping off the top ropes but the table wasn't supposed to collapse. The second drop wasn't planned and Mick didn't remember much of the actual match. He didn't remember taking out the thumbtacks.
In all honesty....Mick was lucky he wasn't killed in this match.

What sold it for me was the punch Undertaker gave Mankind after the two big falls. Mankind just collapses like a lifeless corpse. I imagine that was probably an involuntary reaction. The way he goes down just completely sells the bumps. We all know how a guy sells a punch. That’s not how a wrestler sells a punch. That’s how a damn near dead man sells a punch and it was just brilliant.

Yes! I've always thought that THAT moment said a lot in high volumes as well as at the end, when he tries to throw one leg up to kick out, as Taker got the 3 count. Like there was still about 20% of him still able to GO, somewhere in that mind and body of Mick's... If he could have added another 30% to that 20% that was left, it would have been enough energy to kick out... But truly... He just didn't have enough, but the important part is... In the end, he still had SOME! And he walked away. Shoulders to lean on, yes. But still, NO medics at all until he was out of sight behind gorilla. Pure... Simply fucking pure.

This match forever changed WWE. Still to this day in my 30 plus years of watching wrestling this is one of the most epic matches ever.
This match put Mick Foley over the top forever. I recall he even asked Russo if that match was better than Taker vs. HBK in the Cell and Russo said yes.

Mick Foley may have never been the greatest technical wrestler but he is a god of an Entertainer he will do anything for his fans and that's what makes him a legend.
That match legitimately made me think a man was dead, even rewatching it now it’s incredible that Mick didn’t at the very least come out of that paralyzed.
I remember when I finally got my hands on a recording of this match as a kid I would watch it on repeat almost every day.
This moment was when I became a hardcore fan...I rented this ppv and could not believe what I saw...At the time, I didn't know what to make of it as everyone knew wrestling was "fake" but this, put me in a state of disbelief and shock as I was so impressed on how a person could be so courageous...I had a new found respect for the business to this day because of this match..Like many others, this will never be done again but wow, it is still unbelievable now..What a show of tenacity and fortitude
Another sad note, Mick Foley wrote in his book that he had that thumbtack conversation...with the Undertaker. Which means he had it at least twice.

The good old days when pro wrestling was unmissable. Everyone would talk non-stop about it on the Monday's (after a PPV) and Tuesday's (after Nitro and RAW) at school. Cool kids and dorks/nerds, everyone liked at least one thing about it. But today? I feel bad for the kids that watch it. They have a shit product nowadays.
I grew up at the best time. I was a little kid in the eighties so I was able to fully enjoy Hulkamania, was 13-14 when Sunny came in and was at the pissed off teen stage when DX and Stone Cold were at the top.
Got to see the greatest match ever (Savage v Steamboat at WMIII) and the (at least at the time) most awe inspiring display of will in wrestling history by Mick at Hell in a Cell.
I still love watching this match, but it never recaptures the experience of watching it live at the time. It was just unreal. Those huge bumps, the amazing commentary, the crowd going mad, it was just perfect. It was probably my fave WWE (WWE) moment ever. I would love to have been in the crowd for it.
Dr.Romascavage used to be my primary care physician. He has a ton of wrestling memorabilia in his office. I loved going there, it almost made being sick worth it. He has the best stories.
regardless if we ever have another two talents like Mankind and Taker, we will NEVER see another match like this at this level ever again.

It's so sad I'm watching this in 2020 and it's almost like a postmortem of professional wrestling. I remember watching this match thinking these men were larger than life. This could not be done today under any circumstances. Wrestling is dead.
If Jim Ross does not do what he does during this match making Mick out to be the face who is forcing him to yell stop the goddamn match after Foley takes hits that would hospitalize a normal man and even Taker is concerned.. You just know this match was one for the books. And to hear Bruce Prichard tell the story is like listening to if God had a voice. This match made what ECW did look like childsplay.

That's not what he meant. Mick was hurt and a lot of the guys from ECW were also hurt during their matches, legitimately but the big difference here his that Mick stayed down, no one in ECW sold shit. They would slice themselves open with cheese graters, jump off ridiculous high altitudes only to back into the ring, pin each other and kick out like nothing happened. You can even hear a person in the crowd say "Mick, finish the match Mick!" That's the mindset of the ECW crowd. They didn't care. Mick was hurt, he sold it, they had a long pause before he went back in and Vince coming down to check on Mick was the icing on the cake. In other words, psychology. ECW never had that. You became concerned for Mick. You were never concerned for Mick or anyone in ECW because they got back up regardless.

My favorite match of all time, not just cause the big bumps, but the way they work the rest of the match after the two bumps. To me the first bump killed the old Mankind and let Foley shine his wrestling genies.

Mick took it to the edge and beyond, i think what motivated him was the need for continued success and acceptance as the most daring wrestler of all times who would put his life on the line to entertain, that way becoming a sure fire attraction, making it impossible for Vince to shelve him

King after Mankind gets chokeslammed through the cell: "That's it. He's dead."
Foley later said that had he taken a "proper" bump on that chokeslam that he might have been killed.
Me and my buddies were huge wrestling marks and had our own hotline in Metro Detroit about it & I remember having to work till midnight that night and my buddies showed up when I got off all excited and saying you have to watch this match. Now! Luckily they recorded it. Still remember that whole night to this day.
The way Ross told it, I actually thought Mick had died.

My dad was at the event live he thought Foley was legitimately dead when he hit the announce table he was sitting about 5 feet behind the announce table he said he sat in silence for the rest of the match and show after Foley got up from the bump

i remember watching that match and was very concerned for his health but i stood up and applauded after the match in appreciation for what mick put himself through to entertain the fans. i would have totally understoof if they stopped the match but to cointinue on shows how tough mick is and i will forever appreciate what he did.

Considering the absolute caving of his skull he received over the years, it’s amazing how Foley is still moving and Benoit was the one that flipped.
That's likely because Benoit did steroids for a long time, or at least that's what everyone said. However Foley took just as hard of bell ringers than Benoit.
It's kinda sad we won't ever see something like this in the WWE ever again. Taking mega bumps is an art that should not be snuffed out completely. Mick knew he didn't need to do this, but he wanted to, he wanted to give us a great moment, and he delivered. Thank you Mick!

No. What stopped it was optics. Sponsers not wanting to advertise violence, a younger demographic and target audience, a public outlashing at head trauma and PTE from chair shots, mostly from the CHIRS BENIOT fallout, the PG era had nothing todo with Owen Harts death.

I love how Conrad is gushing over the first HBK/Undertaker Hell in the Cell, and while from a technical point it was a better match, Shawn's bump onto the table was a picnic compared to both of the bumps Mic did.

That match wasn’t a one bump match though. There was so much to that match and it all flowed perfectly. It was a perfect match and then you add in Kane debuting.
This match was, for better or worse, a two bump match. Everything they did after the chokeslam through the cage didn’t matter. No one remembers anything besides the shot of Foley with the tooth in his nose and the fact they used tacks.
There's nothing more then the bumps. They started on the top and two minutes later Foley was down. When they came up again, well, the second bump came a minute after. Then some brawl, a piledriver, backdrop on thumbs, chockslam on thumbs tombstone. Four wrestling moves in one of the most famous wrestling match ever.
Greatest match of all time. Nothing is faked. Every emotion is felt. This will never grow old

I was at that King of the Ring at the old Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, my dad and I were seated at an angle from the side of the cell Mick took that bump off to the floor. It was like he fell forever, like time stood still. Absolutely surreal and very scary. I'll never forget my dad, with his trademark dry sarcasm, stood there with all these screaming fans around us just shrugging and going, "Well... he's dead."
We knew at the time it was one of the most over the top outrageous matches we'd ever seen but all these years later hearing people from inside the business putting into perspective from where they were at in their careers and job roles at the time only further lends credence to the impact it made. My favorite line was from Kevin Sullivan who was the booker in WCW who saw it said something along the lines of "It's over, boys, that's it. They won."

Just binged disk 1-3 of the hell in the cell DVD. Amazing. The Foley Taker match was by far and away the best of the bunch. Just amazing work by both, Foley obviously. I completely forgot Terry Funk took a choke slam during the match. Great stuff.

In fact I believe Mick actually enjoyed pain, Ive seen him smile many times after a hard hit
I know Mick, the RAW was in Cleveland the next day. That was the first time Mick didn’t hang with me after the match when he was in my area. I remember my girlfriend at the time yelling at him when he called us asking him what the hell was wrong with him! I couldn’t believe what he did. He’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet but both him and Terry are crazy!

I used to have VCR tapes of raw and ppvs. Most were taped over or lost. The few things I have that I remember is the last minutes of Bret vs Owen cage match ppv. And I believe the ridiculous hell in a cell 6 way with rikishi. I barely remember it because I was at the end of my fandom. It was when rikishi got tossed off the cell into a dump truck and as he landed you saw the mattress bounce up from under the hay. Wish I still had all the raws and even the Nitro's I hated wcw but my grandma loved wrestling so she would watch one and tape it while another TV recorded the other.
Well thank God he got the thumbtacks in,I don't even remember that spot from the match, damn.

I listen to this again today on the way home from the doctor and I had to watch it again tonight and everything about it was perfect from taker throwing Foley to Jr and king asking for help it was all there in my opinion it's the most memorable match of all time and only Foley and Taker could have pulled it off and I think only Jr and King could call the way they did I wonder how years this match took off Foley's career

I listen to this PPV through grainy/blurry image on the ppv cable channel (back when you could hear the ppv without buying it, but couldn’t watch it) I will never forget the feeling I got as a 12 year old boy listening to JR’s call for this Hell in a Cell Match. I really thought mick was dead
Bruce tells this differently then the other versions I've heard. I always heard most that stuff wasn't planned, and even the first throw off the cage Vince had said No to but they did it anyways, and going thru the cage wasn't planned at all...
Mick said Vince initially said no but Mick convinced him by comparing it to missing an elbow drop jumping off the top ropes but the table wasn't supposed to collapse. The second drop wasn't planned and Mick didn't remember much of the actual match. He didn't remember taking out the thumbtacks.
